These examples underscore the transformative potential of intrapreneurial freedom, where exploration leads to groundbreaking products and industry-shifting advancements. By giving employees space to explore ideas beyond their day-to-day tasks, organisations tap into a wealth of innovation, allowing intrapreneurs to flourish. <h2>The essence of intrapreneurship</h2>Innovation requires trial and error, and not every idea will succeed. The best environments for intrapreneurship are those that embrace failure as part of the learning process. Companies like Intel and Tesla have thrived by viewing setbacks as growth opportunities. In the 1980s, Intel faced a major crossroads when internal innovators identified a larger market opportunity and advocated for a shift from memory chips to microprocessors. They embraced potential failure with this pivot, which though risky, propelled Intel to become a leader in the tech industry. Tesla, known for its continuous drive for innovation, encourages its teams to experiment and push boundaries. It's like a superhero cape for CEOs but without the spandex. <keyword id="20064348" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Y-Combinator" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Y Combinator" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Y Combinator">Y Combinator</keyword> co-founder <keyword id="20555672" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paul-Graham" source="keywords">Paul Graham</keyword>, inspired by Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky’s talk at an event, penned a blog post about Founder Mode and it got the entire startup world talking. According to Graham, when Chesky scaled Airbnb, he initially followed the widely accepted strategy: hiring skilled professionals and giving them autonomy. However, this approach felt like running a marathon in flip-flops, it simply didn’t yield the desired results. So, he decided to go full-blown "Founder Mode," which is basically being the CEO, the janitor, and the motivational speaker all at once. <div type="image" title="Paul Graham’s blog post went viral" msid="113456577" hostid="261"></div> Graham’s post points out that this experience is not unique to Chesky — many other founders have faced similar challenges and come to similar conclusions. The result is a growing recognition of ‘Founder Mode’. <h2><keyword id="23219794" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="what-is-founder-mode" source="Orion">What is Founder Mode</keyword>?</h2>Founder mode is a mindset that allows entrepreneurs to remain deeply involved in their companies’ day-to-day operations, even as they scale. As we have seen in many Hollywood movies and real-world examples like Jobs, Musks, Zuckerbergs, and Murthys, founders operate (a bit too) differently from trained executives and managers. They're like the kids who built their own fort and refuse to let anyone else touch it. On a serious note, anecdotal evidence does support that founders focus on the vision, processes, and details of the business in ways that managers typically do not. Graham's post suggests that it’s a different way of running a company — one that involves a hands-on approach to leadership, where founders engage with more than just their direct reports. <div type="image" title="Founders are different from managers" msid="113456522" hostid="261"></div> Unlike traditional corporate structures, where the top management is expected to delegate and step back, Founder Mode requires more personal involvement. Basically, when the CEO of a company is in Founder Mode, where founders bypass layers of management to interact directly with lower-level employees, they can just walk over to a junior employee and ask “What’s up?”, something that <keyword id="19903807" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Elon-Musk" source="keywords">Elon Musk</keyword> reportedly has been doing for a while. One of the core aspects of Founder Mode, according to Graham, is that founders can make decisions with a level of intuition and insight that professional managers often lack. This is largely because they’ve built the company from the ground up and have an intimate understanding of its operations, culture, and customers. In contrast, professional managers are typically brought in to optimise and scale systems that are already in place, which might often lead to decisions that feel disconnected from the original vision of the company. <h2>Steve Jobs and Apple: The classic example of Founder Mode</h2> <div type="image" title="Many experts agree that Steve Jobs is a peak example of Founder Mode" msid="113456730" hostid="261"></div> A key example that Graham used is Steve Jobs, who famously ran Apple with an almost obsessive focus on product and design. Jobs didn’t simply delegate these responsibilities to his team; he was known for being involved in the minutiae, often directly challenging decisions and leading initiatives that others might consider too detailed for a CEO. Graham drew a parallel between this approach and what Chesky realised at Airbnb — that stepping back too much can actually harm the company. Founders, Graham wrote, are often “gaslit” into believing that they should adopt a more hands-off style, only to see their businesses suffer as a result. However, many experts also believe that Founder Mode is often disastrous for companies, except for rare examples, and a balance between founder and manager modes is necessary. <h2>Founder Mode VS Manager Mode: Experts weigh in on the debate</h2> <div type="image" title="Debates around Founder Mode have been rampant across social media since the beginning of this month" msid="113456800" hostid="261"></div> Debates around Founder Mode have been rampant across social media since the beginning of this month when Graham’s blog post came out. The philosophical divide between Founder Mode and Manager Mode often compels people to choose sides, while industry veterans and experts say that it’s important to understand both approaches and companies must try to achieve a balance between them. Sonica Aron, Founder of HR advisory firm Marching Sheep, recognises the importance of managers and says that it is important to have good people in the team and empower them. Talking to Business Insider India, she says, “As a founder, I find myself to be very purpose driven and passionate about my firm. As a result, sometimes decisions tend to get driven by the heart rather than the mind. Therefore it is essential to have bright and committed people in your team, empower them, involve them in decision making. Also, as the founder, I am responsible not just for the health of my business but overall well being of my team. If they do well, we all do well.” On the other hand, Mr. Srinivasa Addepalli, founder and CEO of GlobalGyan Leadership Academy, feels that the debate of Founder Mode vs Manager mode shouldn’t exist in the first place. He told Business Insider India that according to him, “all good leaders, whether startup founders or corporate executives, must be capable of both modes and switch between them depending on the context.” He added, “The Founder Mode leader tackles problems with passion and ownership, without concern for hierarchy, precedents, or due process. However, founders must remain humble about their fragility. To ensure sustainability, the Manager Mode—focused on developing others, building structures, and codifying knowledge—becomes essential, even as it requires them to relinquish some control and accept inefficiency. For instance, Steve Jobs’ decision to set up Apple University was a classic Manager Mode action by one of the best-known founders.” Ayush Singh, Founder of MaplePods, a smart-technology business, says, “Founder Mode may inspire new entrepreneurs, but seasoned founders know building something meaningful and scalable requires more than motivation—it's about solving problems, staying resilient, and seeking real support along the journey.” <h2>The downsides of Founder Mode</h2>While there are many people who believe that entering Founder Mode is healthy, some experts argue otherwise. They say that since founders are deeply connected to their vision, staying too hands-on can lead to micromanagement and hinder the growth of a leadership team. This creates a culture of dependency and can cause chaos when a founder steps into too many areas, leading to inefficiency and fear among employees. Mr. Ankit Aggarwal, founder and CEO of Unstop, told Business Insider India, “While Founder Mode can foster an entrepreneurial culture and drive rapid growth, it comes with significant challenges related to scalability, accountability, and founder burnout. As companies scale, Founder Mode can lead to bottlenecks, as founders may find it difficult to delegate. This limits the development of a strong leadership team and may stifle creativity from other employees.” Further, he adds that intense involvement can lead to founder burnout, negatively affecting both the individual and the company. “In the long run, while Founder Mode may work for early-stage <keyword id="6362513" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups" source="Orion">startups</keyword>, founders must recognise when to step back and 'devolve'. Devolving to allow the company to grow through more traditional structures, without succumbing to excess hierarchy. Balancing innovation with scalability is key to long-term success, allowing founders to focus on strategy while empowering their teams.” Meanwhile, Aleksandr Yampolskiy, cofounder and CEO of SecurityScorecard, said in a LinkedIn article that the Founder Mode has both pros and cons. He highlighted the value of founder mode in providing visionary leadership and empowering CEOs to challenge their teams and boards when necessary. However, Yampolskiy also wrote that overstepping and micromanaging can create chaos and a culture of fear. He said that founders must learn to evolve with the company’s growth, delegating and making themselves dispensable over time. <h2> Why are people talking about Founder Mode now?</h2> <div type="image" title="Why are people talking about Founder Mode?" msid="113456851" hostid="261"></div> So, why did Graham’s blog post go viral and why are people talking about Founder mode? Discussions around Founder Mode vs Manager Mode might have been around for a long time, but Graham’s post helped a great deal in popularising the confusion that millions of founders go through. The startup landscape for deals is drastically changing

Agrawal <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/parag-agrawal-twitter-ceo-raises-30-million-ai-startup-report-2024-1">raised about $30 million for the startup</a>, The Information reported in January when the startup's name was still unknown. Some of the startup's backers include venture capital firms Khosla Ventures, Index Ventures, and First Round Capital.The company's LinkedIn page, which shows 10 other people working for it, links to an official website that shows it's building an "API for AIs using web data."Parallel's website is short on details about its mission other than stating that it is developing "systems for advanced AIs to work with the web." It also predicts that AI will use the web on behalf of humans. The website description says: "Access and computation on the web will increase by several orders of magnitude. Everything from the infrastructure to business models will need to evolve."The startup is based in Palo Alto, California, per its website. However, the terms of service section lists an address in San Francisco that is a short drive from the former office of Twitter, now called X. Company filings show that a separate entity, Shapley Inc., of which Agrawal is a corporate officer, is registered to the same address.It's unclear when Agrawal registered the website domain.<h2 id="d7d04b47-62c6-4571-a145-4c12356c9a5b">From Twitter to AI startup </h2>Agrawal was the CEO of Twitter from November 2021 to October 2022, when <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-twitter-parag-agrawal-relationship-history-fired-lawsuit-bot-2022-10">Elon Musk fired him</a> following his acquisition of the platform. Billionaire Palmer Luckey's icy relationship with Mark Zuckerberg is thawing 8 years after his Facebook firing

A new experiment from the University of Cambridge suggests the answer is no.Artificial intelligence actually outperformed human CEOs in most situations in a real-life simulation of running a business that pitted people against computers, but there was one thing AI couldn't handle, according to the experiment: so-called black swan events, like a pandemic.Because of that, AI got fired more quickly by a virtual board of directors than its human counterparts, which navigated unexpected situations better.Hamza Mudassir, one of the researchers behind the experiment, told Business Insider that AI outperformed the human participants on most metrics, including profitability, product design, managing inventory, and optimizing prices — but that its performance wasn't enough to save it from getting the boot."It did not do well on survival within the C-suite just because it was not very good at handling abrupt changes or changes that require a new way of thinking," Mudassir said.The Cambridge researchers conducted the experiment from February to July and included 344 people, some of whom were senior executives at a South Asian bank. It also included college students. And the last participant wasn't a person at all, but rather <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-chat-gpt-2023-1">GPT-4o</a>, the large language model, or LLM, from OpenAI.The participants played a game designed to simulate real-world situations in which CEOs have to make decisions. The game had them take on the role of CEO of a car company. It was designed by the Cambridge researchers' ed-tech startup, Strategize.inc."The goal of the game was simple — survive as long as possible without being fired by a virtual board while maximizing market cap," the researchers wrote in the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://hbr.org/2024/09/ai-can-mostly-outperform-human-ceos">Harvard Business Review</a>.Mudassir told BI that the LLMs were great at analyzing data, recognizing patterns, and making inferences. For example, when it came to designing a car based on factors like available parts, price, consumer preferences, and demand, there were 250,000 combinations participants could come up with. The cars that AI put together were significantly better than those the humans came up with, he said.In part, he said that's because humans have biases and personal taste in things like the shape of a car; for the AI, it was simply a "puzzle of finding out the most optimal value for what the customer wanted," Mudassir said.But that doesn't mean that AI was the optimal CEO. When a "black swan" event occurred, the bot couldn't address it as quickly — or as well — as the human executives and students. When there was a major shift in market conditions, like introducing a pandemic into the mix, the model flopped, he said."How do you react to COVID if you're dealing with it for the first time? A lot of people, and a lot of CEOs, have different strategies," Mudassir said. "In this case, it did not have enough information on how to react in time to prevent itself from getting fired," he said of the AI.So CEOs can rest easy for now. The researchers say that while AI's performance as the virtual head of a company was impressive, it wasn't good enough to replace a human. Still, AI performed so well that it can't be ignored in corporate strategy, Mudassir said.In the future, Mudassir said LLMs could be specifically tuned to a particular company with real-time data, in which case they'd likely perform even better than AI did in the experiment.He said perhaps the best use-case of AI would be in business "war gaming" — or using multiple LLMs to represent different stakeholders, such as competitors, lawmakers, or activists, and then testing how certain decisions would actually play out. Some of that could, in theory, replace the work of some <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-questions-consulting-firms-are-answering-for-clients-2024-6">strategy and management consultants</a>, who often make recommendations to a CEO based on their own analysis of certain outcomes in certain situations.

AI largely beat human CEOs in an experiment that pitted computers against people — but it also got fired more quickly

It encapsulated much of what I'd left Maine for New York to find: cultural diversity, grassroots activism, vibrant urbanism, and a stunning view of the Manhattan skyline. When I moved into the junior two-bedroom with original parquet floors and golden western light, I felt I'd stepped into a secure future. I moved into a temporary rental nine blocks away. I spent hours on the phone with my insurance agent, learning the technical meaning of "total loss." I filled out a spreadsheet calculating the value of my destroyed items, soothed by the order of neat lines, columns, and numbers. I was grateful for my personal property coverage, but I soon found that many of my neighbors had no insurance at all, and the condo board woefully underinsured the building as a whole. A payment for the full value of our homes was unlikely.Once I'd checked all the bureaucratic boxes, I was forced to confront my loss. <h2 id="4877f986-6cf6-4a9c-9962-d99d9df0af91">My friends and family supported me</h2>While I was sinking into grief, my community threw me a lifeline. Fellow building members shared support and commiseration via group text as we scattered across the city. My parents hastily arranged a visit. Neighbors organized a collective fundraiser and benefit concert. A colleague insisted I couldn't have a new home without books, and mobilized other writers to help me replace my favorites. My old classmate's father sent me a pressure cooker. An ex replaced my gym shoes. Coworkers brought food to my door. The library forgave fines for destroyed books and hosted a communal dinner. At the gathering, Father Kevin, a local Irish Catholic priest who said Spanish mass, gave a blessing for our departed pets. A committed agnostic, I was grateful for this ritual, knowing my Catholic grandmother would have been proud.My friends helped me salvage my life so I could look towards what was next. In disposable coveralls, hard hats, and N95 masks to protect from any asbestos from the burnt roof, they carried my father's mid-century desk, crates of records, and a still living fiddle leaf fig tree down five flights of sooty stairs. I swore I wouldn't get another cat, but another found a rescue that resembled the pet I'd lost. A few days later, Biscuit and I stared at each other, wondering what we were both doing in this new living arrangement.After the fire, I realized that support comes to us when we need it through the relationships we've built and invested in. For me, mindfulness and self-care were key to navigating this period. You can’t pour from an empty cup, so make sure you’re refilling yours. Reconnect with your network: Don’t be afraid to lean on your network for support, advice, or job leads. It can feel uncomfortable, but remember that people are often happy to help. Reach out to former colleagues, mentors, and friends, and let them know you’re in transition. Don’t rush the next step: Sometimes, the instinct is to jump into whatever comes next to avoid the discomfort of uncertainty. But if you can, take a beat and make sure your next move aligns with your values and long-term goals. Use this time to reflect on what you want from your next role or career path.
