Akshay Kumar-starrer 'Ram Setu' earns Rs 15 crore on opening day

'Ram Setu' to make streaming debut on Prime Video on Dec 23

Amazon Prime Video India tweeted the news on their official account on Wednesday. Amazon Prime announces first co-produced film 'Ram Setu' starring Akshay Kumar

Entertainment industry is a tough nut to crack — just having one hit film under your belt takes years and years of hard work. But, <keyword id="19896353" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Akshay-Kumar" source="keywords">Akshay Kumar</keyword> was different, success seemed to flow his way effortlessly. Having delivered over 30 hit Bollywood films in his career so far, he was once the box office king. His hard work, routines, and rituals were legendary tales of how to be successful and disciplined in an industry full of uncertainties and controversies. But now, his subjects seem to have grown weary of his repetitive, more miss than hit (or more anadi than khiladi) films as evidenced by the series of flops he’s delivered post the box office success of Sooryavanshi back in November 2021. From Atrangi Re, Bachchan Pandey and Samrat Prithviraj in 2021-22 to <keyword id="37999" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bade-Miyan-Chote-Miyan" source="Orion">Bade Miyan Chote Miyan</keyword> and <keyword id="20566815" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sarfira" source="keywords">Sarfira</keyword> in 2024, over 15 movies of his have not performed up to the mark. Commenting on these string of failures, Akshay commented in March, “We keep on trying every type of film. I don't stick to one kind of genre. I keep on jumping from one genre to another, whether there is success or no success, that's how I have always worked. I'll keep on doing it… something that is social, something that is good, something in comedy, in action.” But how long can fans and brands remain loyal following such a long stream of underwhelming performances? Will team Akshay pull up socks or will the legend’s legacy continue floundering until it gradually fades? Akshay Kumar's milestone 150th film, the inspirational drama Sarfira, is proving to be a bumpy ride at the box office. Released on July 12, the film, a remake of the National Award-winning Tamil hit Soorarai Pottru, has garnered underwhelming collections in its first five days. Reports suggest that only around 100 tickets were sold for ‘Sarfira’ in Hyderabad on the first day. Not only was this his lowest opening film in 15 years, but industry tracker Sacnilk estimates Sarfira managed only Rs 1.25 crore on Day 7 yesterday, a mere blip in its overall earnings. The film's week one total stands at a modest Rs 18.8 crore net in India. This puts it slightly ahead of Akshay's recent remake "Selfiee," but a far cry from his past box office dominance. <h2>A string of flops </h2>Sarfira is hardly the lone black mark on his career, his rap sheet is filled with smears of other recent setbacks like Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Raksha Bandhan and Ram Setu, to name a few. Despite being announced as his comeback, the Akshay and Tiger Shroff starrer Bade Miyan Chote Miyan failed to make any waves. As per his fans, this is hardly surprising considering he’s been pushing out roughly 5 movies every year and there is no newness to the roles he’s been picking. <keyword id="20235508" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Khiladi-Kumar" source="keywords">Khiladi Kumar</keyword> is known to wrap up entire film shoots in a matter of 30-60 days, and critics have long complained that one cannot expect substance when the script and performances are so rushed. The actor has been releasing remakes left, right and centre and seems to be agreeing to every script coming his way — almost in a frenzy, like he’s unaware of his star-power. The other theory making rounds is that since Akshay was able to recover after a string of 14 consecutive flops earlier in his career, he thinks he will get over this slump by just doing what he’s been doing, too! We did try to reach him too to get the first-person perspective, but all we heard from his team was pained silence, at least till now. <h2>Maybe Akshay needs a breather — and a comedy or two? </h2>Akshay’s recent antics have us wanting to give him a hug and tell him that we will continue to love him even if he chooses not to do a bazillion movies every year. In fact, we’d probably love him more if he decided to take it easy and be pickier with the scripts he does. Yes, we’re aware that his wife <keyword id="19944420" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="twinkle-khanna" source="keywords">Twinkle Khanna</keyword> refused to have more babies with him until he started taking more serious roles (as he revealed during their interview on Koffee with Karan). But as much as we love Mrs Funny Bones, this ruse has gone on for way too long, and we want the old comedy Kumar back. Most experts think that a brief break could do wonders for Akshay’s career, it certainly worked with his other contemporaries like Shah Rukh Khan. And after he’s back, maybe we could have more comedies like Hera Pheri — because nothing embodies the brand that is Akshay Kumar more. His upcoming film Khel Khel Mein has also failed to generate any meaningful buzz so far a month prior to its release. However, we may need to wait and see if it manages to make a dent in this long and painful phase. For now, Welcome 3 is also in the works (we don’t blame you for not remembering a Welcome 2, because we don’t either), giving fans some hope for a hit at the end of this year. But Nana Patekar has already said that he won’t be a part of the film because it didn’t have a story. So, is this the end of Akshay Kumar's box office reign? Or, just a rather long blip in an unmatched career full of hits and misses? Sarfira numbers certainly don't inspire confidence. It is also the first time that Apple has directly taxed advertising in iOS apps. "Apple continues to evolve its policies to grow their own business while undercutting others in the digital economy," a <keyword id="399907" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="meta" source="Orion">Meta</keyword> spokesperson was quoted as saying in the report late on Tuesday. Apple previously said it didn't take a share of developer advertising revenue, and "now apparently changed its mind". "We remain committed to offering small businesses simple ways to run ads and grow their businesses on our apps," said Meta. Paying to boost posts is a common feature across Meta's family of apps, all well as Twitter and Chinese short-form video platform TikTok. In a statement shared with The Verge, an Apple spokesperson said the App Store has long taken a cut of digital goods and services. "Boosting, which allows an individual or organisation to pay to increase the reach of a post or profile, is a digital service -- so of course In-App Purchase is required. This has always been the case and there are many examples of apps that do it successfully," the Apple spokesperson was quoted as saying. Apple's privacy changes in the App Store called App Tracking Transparency (ATT) have already given a boost to its ad business, and the iPhone maker has managed to break the Facebook-Google advertising monopoly in the online search market. Going by the momentum of <keyword id="1390483" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="housing-sales" source="Orion">housing sales</keyword> in the ongoing festive period and that of the first three quarters of this year, 2022 is likely to breach the previous peak of 2014 with an all-time high sales across the top seven cities. As per the latest research by real estate consultancy firm Anarock, total sales in the top seven cities can exceed 3.6 lakh units in 2022. In the previous peak year of 2014, the cities saw the sale of 3.43 lakh units. The January-September period of 2022 saw <keyword id="35061" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="housing" source="Orion">housing</keyword> sales and new launches surpass the full-year readings of 2019 with nearly 2.73 lakh units sold in nine months of 2022 and new launches at 2.65 lakh units. 2019 saw over 2.61 lakh units sold in the entire year, while new supply stood at 2.34 lakh units. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and NCR have retained their top slot rankings in the first nine months of 2022. Nearly 1,30,450 units were collectively sold in these two regions, accounting for 48 per cent of the total sales in the top seven cities. Other high-selling cities were Pune, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, which accounted for a 42 per cent cumulative sales share. Housing sales remained strong despite average property prices increasing in 2022, with the annual price appreciation in Q3 2022 being the best in the past seven years -- 6 per cent against Q3 2021. Anuj Puri, Chairman, Anarock Group, said: "2022 will create residential market history in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, having already breached all previous highs and continuing to witness strong sales momentum in the ongoing festive season. Homeownership sentiment retained the vibrancy ushered in by the Covid-19 era, despite interest rates hikes of 190 bps, increased property rates, and the conspicuous lack of festive season offers and discounts this year." A combination of end-user and investor demand continues to zero in on projects by large and listed developers. These players report consistently high sales and are stepping up new supply infusions into the market. Total new launches in 2022 will remain lower than the previous peak of 2014, which saw approximately 5.45 lakh homes launched across the top 7 cities. Current trends indicate that launches in these cities will exceed 3.4 lakh units in the whole of 2022. The same ballpark figure goes for Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan,” Rajender Singh Jyala, chief programming head of INOX Leisure said. Jyala also said that Bollywood is expected to buck up during the second quarter of 2022 with mega films like Laal Singh Chaddha, Raksha Bandhan, Vikram Vedha, Brahamastra, Pathaan and Ram Setu. Hence, if the above (opening day) estimate of Laal Singh Chadha is reported, it will be considered below par, given the scale of the film,” said Karan Taurani, senior VP and analyst at marketing firm Elara Capital. While the merger was announced last March, the record date for the scheme of amalgamation between the two multiplex operators happened in February 2023. The combined entity will start trading with the name PVR-INOX on exchanges in March 2023 and their combined financials would be reported from 4QFY23. The multiplex behemoth now owns more than 1,650 screens across 350 properties, in 110 cities. “PVR-INOX now controls 18% screen share (43% share in multiplex screens in India) and 30% box-office share (over 50% share of multiplex box office). The merged entity commands the highest multiplex market share in all key regions of India. PVR-INOX would become the fifth-largest listed multiplex chain globally by screen count with the highest number of admissions per screen (around 127,000 admissions/screen in 2019),” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. The combined entity aims to open 180-200 screens per year, across formats, in the next two years. “Capex per year would be ₹8-8.5 billion (₹800-850 crore). Over 40% new screen openings will come from the South as it remains underpenetrated,” said the report. Analysts say that the merged entity has no real competitor and should remain focused on strengthening its position at the cost of single-screen theatres and smaller chains. Yet, there are challenges that all multiplexes will face bringing in the mega footfalls. For one, the Hindi cinema industry itself is facing the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/its-not-bollywood-films-its-the-superstars-that-people-seem-to-be-tired-of/articleshow/92382077.cms">shifting trend and migration of audiences to South movies</a> which captured audiences with larger-than-life characters. Rapid adoption of OTT, proliferation of social media and an active ‘Boycott Bollywood’ campaign and higher ticket prices have impacted footfalls in theatres, say analysts at Emkay Global. “While focus of the merged entity now shifts to realising synergies, the crucial issue of footfall recovery remains moot. Post-Covid, we have witnessed a clear dichotomy in box-office performance, with a high proportion of movies turning out to be duds; we believe the main culprit is the sub-par content quality, punctured by the weak critic and audience reviews,” said a report by Emkay Global. Only select movies with differentiated offerings have managed to taste success at the box office. As we have emphasised in the past too, Bollywood’s recovery is critical to box-office collections, with regional and Hollywood contribution being only sporadic in nature,” said the report. Bollywood continues to witness poor movie performance with most movies including Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Goodbye and Uunchai, Akshay Kumar’s Ram Setu and Ranveer Singh’s Cirkus not meeting expectations except for Drishyam 2 and Pathaan. “Going ahead too, we believe that star power alone cannot drive collections, if there is no differentiating factor in the movie,” said the Emkay Global report. In Q3 FY23, only one Bollywood movie i.e Drishyam 2 managed to break the ₹100 crore box office barrier. “CY22 has been one of the worst years for Bollywood, with very few movies finding traction. A mere 7% of the major movies that were released in the CY21/22 managed to recover their investment and yielded some profit. Prior to Covid, this was close to 30%, with more than 40% of movies doing well in CY19,” said a report by Emkay.
