All she recalls from that fateful evening in September are two approving words from the Hollywood titan ("Your dress!"), a twist to check the label (<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CjVSdYKgTNk/">Pinko</a>), and the hug they shared. But the next day, an image of the two stars and a video marking the sartorial moment appeared in Drew's Instagram inbox, confirming the unimaginable.</p> <p>One might wonder how an actor whose 25-year career includes breakout roles on "<a href="https://www.insider.com/greys-anatomy-sarah-drew-wrote-letter-change-april-ending-2021-9">Grey's Anatomy</a>," "Mad Men," and "Glee" could still become starstruck, but consider this: That night, at Variety's annual Power of Women event, Drew, who turned 42 in October, also found herself in the presence of Malala Yousafzai, Ava DuVernay, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton, <a href="https://www.insider.com/elizabeth-olsen-losing-roles-marvel-movies-mcu-frustrated-2022-5">and Elizabeth Olsen</a>.</p><p>"I've always had this sense that I'm not at the fancy-people table," she said over a video call in October.</p><div type="image" title="Sarah Drew in &quot;Reindeer Games Homecoming.&quot;" height="3057" width="4076" msid="95588222" hostid="261"></div><p>Drew may not consider herself "fancy," even while at a prestigious, invite-only event celebrating some of the world's most powerful women. But whether stopping Oprah in her tracks or portraying multidimensional women, she knows how to leave audiences wanting more. That's how her guest-starring role as April Kepner in a two-episode arc on <a href="https://www.insider.com/greys-anatomy-sarah-drew-japril-spinoff-sexier-2022-5">"Grey's Anatomy" snowballed</a> into a recurring appearance and, later, made her a series regular for nine seasons.</p><p>She'll be the first to acknowledge that shiny, buzzy roles are awesome. But when her time on the beloved medical-drama series came to an abrupt end, Drew learned just how fleeting fancy can be. So now, instead of waiting around for another table to open up, Drew has spent the past three years building one of her own.</p><h2>Drew made TV history with her screenwriting debut: 'There is no possibility for me to half-ass anything'</h2><div type="image" title="Sarah Drew in &quot;Reindeer Games Homecoming.&quot;" height="4000" width="5333" msid="95588225" hostid="261"></div><p>For her screenwriting debut, Drew opted for a challenge by marrying the holidays and grief, two themes as popular as they are complex. "Reindeer Games Homecoming" centers on a high-school biology teacher in Vermont named MacKenzie Graves (played by Drew) and her former high-school crush Chase Weston (her fellow "Grey's" alum Justin Bruening), a celebrity whose hometown return triggers MacKenzie's unresolved heartbreak over her father's death.</p><p>The Lifetime film premiered Saturday, making Drew the first woman to simultaneously star in, executive produce, and have a solo writing credit on a Lifetime movie through <a href="https://www.mylifetime.com/broaderfocus">the Broader Focus program</a>, the network's initiative meant to uplift and hire more women in writing, directing, and producing roles.</p><p>"There is no possibility for me to half-ass anything," Drew tells me from her home in Los Angeles during our third and final Zoom conversation. "I don't know how to phone something in. It would feel like it would be going completely against my identity and my makeup to do that."</p><p>It's this attitude that sharpened her instincts and placed her on <a href="https://www.insider.com/greys-anatomy-sarah-drew-nightmares-panic-attacks-filming-hospital-shooting-2021-11">Shonda Rhimes' star-making radar</a>, first for a pilot titled "Inside the Box," which never made it to air; then for a role on the "Grey's" spinoff "Private Practice"; and ultimately, her final destination, the fictional Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital.</p><h2>Her longtime on-screen love Jesse Williams says Drew's confidence is 'badass'</h2><div type="image" title="Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew" height="1998" width="2664" msid="95588228" hostid="261"></div><p>Drew recalls a moment from the early "Grey's" years when she spotted her costar Sandra Oh, across the room, confidently debating her famous, founding character Dr. Cristina Yang with the head writers. Right then and there in the fake hospital's conference room, Drew decided: "Her, I want to be like her. I want to speak my mind with confidence and passion like she does."</p><p>Her passionate pitches for April are well-documented in the press. Drew <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/greys-anatomy-april-baby-jackson-772898/">suggested to Rhimes the death of April's infant son Samuel</a> while pregnant with her real-life daughter Hannah Lanfer. Hannah <a href="https://people.com/parents/sarah-drew-daughter-hannah-first-photo-premature-delivery-nicu/">was born</a> 10 hours after she'd filmed Samuel's birth scene. Dialogue also matters to the actor. In season 10, April and her husband Jackson Avery (<a href="https://www.insider.com/greys-anatomy-why-jesse-williams-left-hit-medical-drama-2022-3">played by Jesse Williams</a>) fought as newlyweds about how they'd raise a hypothetical deaf child. She recalls getting emotional when she saw dialogue that insinuated April pitied her husband for not having faith in God. As a Christian whose personal life inspired much of April's backstory, Drew didn't feel comfortable with her character pitying anyone who didn't share her beliefs.</p><p>"It was so important for me playing April to be a person of faith that didn't denigrate or diminish anyone else's experience," she says, adding that she hadn't seen a person of faith modeled on TV like that until then.</p><div type="image" title="april kepner grey's anatomy doctor" height="600" width="800" msid="95588229" hostid="261"></div><p>In the scene that made it to air, April said she felt sorry for Jackson because he didn't know how to believe in something he wasn't able to "touch or feel." It's a subtle difference that challenges Jackson's scientific perspective rather than his religious beliefs.</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/japril-jesse-williams-sarah-drew-fans-earned-greys-anatomy-spinoff-2022-2">Williams says</a> he admires his former colleague's "radical honesty," her "level of comfort and confidence" in herself, and the fact that she's "not ashamed of anything" she does for the sake of living her truth. "She has her own upbringing, her own style, her own culture, her own things that are not part of the popular group always," he adds. "And she owns it, and she's a badass for it."</p><h2>Drew tapped into 'emotional courage' in her final days on 'Grey's'</h2><h3><div type="image" title="Sarah Drew smiling" height="2438" width="3245" msid="95588230" hostid="261"></div></h3><p>In 2018, Drew and her costar Jessica Capshaw learned their characters were being written off of "Grey's Anatomy" <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BgErUJzhPKJ/">less than 48 hours</a> before the industry outlet <a href="https://deadline.com/2018/03/greys-anatomy-jessica-capshaw-sarah-drew-exit-abc-medical-drama-1202316987/">Deadline</a> broke the headline news, titled "Grey's Shocker." The decision was based strictly on the show's creative direction, sources reportedly claimed. At the time, Drew had been shadowing her costar and longtime "Grey's" director Kevin McKidd in the hope of one day directing a full episode. Her husband, Peter Lanfer, convinced her to hold her head up high and continue learning from McKidd regardless, a choice she says took "emotional courage."</p><p>Drew says she's grateful for her <a href="https://www.insider.com/greys-anatomy-ellen-pompeo-show-could-continue-without-her-2022-5">time on "Grey's Anatomy."</a> She's "surrendered" to the fact that the medical drama will always be a part of her story, but she also makes herself clear toward the end of our first video session. "Do you think we can move on from 'Grey's'?" she asks. "Can we move forward?"</p><div type="image" title="Grey's Anatomy season 17 episode “Look Up Child”" height="2249" width="3000" msid="95588231" hostid="261"></div><p>Almost immediately after the news of her departure broke, Drew was cast in leading roles for two CBS dramas in 2018 and 2019, neither of which got the green light. She says she's developed the ability to detach herself from projects as necessary but still calls the latter show's getting killed a "devastating" experience. The series title? "The Republic of Sarah."</p><p>"I get written off of one show, but then what comes the next year is a show called 'The Republic of --' not some other person's name, but — Sarah," she says, her eyes lighting up at the memory. She looks off-camera, searching for the words to describe her emotions. "It felt like, I don't know, the payoff for all the hard stuff from the year before."</p><h2>Drew swings big and feels more 'alive' than ever before</h2><div type="image" title="Sarah Drew behind the scenes of &quot;Reindeer Games Homecoming.&quot;" height="4000" width="5333" msid="95588232" hostid="261"></div><p>A few months later, Drew was filming her second Lifetime film, "Twinkle All the Way," when the inspiration for "Reindeer Games Homecoming" struck: a romantic holiday comedy loosely inspired by <a href="https://home.dartmouth.edu/about/winter-carnival">Dartmouth's Winter Carnival</a>, an annual celebration at her husband's alma mater. When she floated the idea to executive producers, they suggested the actor write the vivid world herself. And in three weeks, she did just that. Eager to breathe life into her script, she pitched the story to several networks and streamers. No luck. It seemed as if her story would never be made until <a href="https://deadline.com/2021/11/sarah-drew-two-picture-deal-lifetime-headline-holiday-films-its-a-wonderful-lifetime-slate-1234865252/">Lifetime called and offered her a two-picture deal</a>. It wanted to help bring her story to life.</p><p>Brian Herzlinger, who directed "Reindeer Games Homecoming," describes the movie as massive. While films with similar budgets typically have a maximum of three complex scenes, he says, Drew had written eight, including an ice-sculpture contest, a dog-sled-derby race, a ball-hockey game, and a polar bear plunge.</p><p>When Drew asked Herzlinger to direct the movie, he initially worried she wouldn't be able to devote much attention to her acting performance because of her executive-producing duties. He quickly realized he was wrong.</p><div type="image" title="Justin Bruening and Sarah Drew in &quot;Reindeer Games Homecoming.&quot;" height="4000" width="5333" msid="95588233" hostid="261"></div><p>"She tracked Mac from beginning to end, and that exceeded my expectations because I didn't have to guide as much as I thought I would have to," he said of Drew's dedication to her character.</p><p>Right before she and her film crew kicked off production, Drew reunited with her "Grey's" family to shoot the show's 400th episode. The event had coincided with the "Reindeer Games" timetable, so she pushed the start date a few days back. It was worth it. Surrounded by her past, feeling all at once nostalgic and present, the actor had a realization.</p><p>"I just had this really lovely moment of, 'Yes, that was hard four years ago, but I'm so excited to be doing this next thing,'" she remembered. "And I feel really fulfilled and alive in a way that I've never felt before."</p><p><strong>"Reindeer Games Homecoming" </strong><strong>airs on Lifetime on November 17 at 6 p.m. ET and November 19 at 10 p.m. ET and is streaming on the Lifetime app.</strong></p>

From exiting 'Grey's Anatomy' to making TV history, Sarah Drew is moving forward

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11100688" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="baby-queen">Baby Queen</keyword> is a rising singer-songwriter, armed with biting wit and unbridled emotional honesty.</li><li>She opened up to Insider about her reckless path to fame, dating life, and most personal lyrics.</li><li>She also explained the inspiration behind her newest single, "Dover Beach," released on Wednesday.</li></ul><p>Bella Latham claims she doesn't really believe in astrology - but also said she's "a Leo to a T, which is basically like, I'm an arrogant piece of s---."</p><p>"We're actually really nice people. We just like attention," she recently explained through her computer screen, draped in a red-and-white letterman jacket with "BQ" emblazoned on the front.</p><p>"It's like, I will buy everyone at this entire bar a shot tonight and be broke for the rest of the month, just so that you can have a good night," she grinned. "But you have to compliment me, too."</p><p>Maybe it's because <a href="https://www.insider.com/celebrities-who-are-leos-2019-7">she's a Leo</a>, or maybe it's because she's an artist, but self-mythologizing seems to come as naturally to Latham as breathing. She talks of <a href="https://www.insider.com/billie-eilish-blonde-bangs-new-era-dyed-hair-2021-3">planning different "eras" like a seasoned pop star</a>, steeped in the public eye. She calls herself "a walking Pinterest mood board."</p><p>She even selected her stage name, Baby Queen, because it fit an abstract, "lilac-purple" image in her brain. </p><p>"It's funny because, obviously, Baby Queen is me, but I'll refer to Baby Queen as an alter-ego, like as a joke around friends," she told Insider. "I'll be like, 'Oh my god, that was so Baby Queen of me.'"</p><div type="image" title="baby queen want me promo" height="3000" width="2400" msid="82072020" hostid="261"></div><p>Creating and nurturing a precious self-image can be an act of rebellion, particularly for women whose insecurities have been seemingly encouraged and commodified throughout history. It can certainly be a source of comfort in an increasingly flattened, FaceTuned world.</p><p>During an hour-long conversation with Latham, however, it also occurred to me that it can be quite scary. She used the phrase "Do you know what I mean?" a total of 23 times. She has a habit of pausing mid-sentence and backtracking, selecting her new words with vigorous precision.</p><p>Latham is determined to tell her story - to be "uncomfortably honest" as she puts it - to as many people as possible. But that comes with the danger of meeting the wrong audience.</p><p>When you have a clear idea of how you'd like to be perceived, how much would it hurt to be misunderstood?</p><h2>Latham was born and raised in South Africa, though it didn't take long for her to envision a different destiny</h2><p>"I just decided at the age of 12 - after discovering Taylor Swift, <a href="https://www.insider.com/taylor-swift-love-story-new-rerecorded-song-2021-2">and the 'Love Story' music video</a> - that I was like, 'This is what I'm doing,'" she said, glowing with the casual modesty of someone who just knew, somehow, that it would all work out.</p><p>Latham moved to London when she was 18 against her parents' wishes - and probably her own better judgment.</p><p>"I had a very distorted and warped vision of what the <keyword id="6354530" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="music">music</keyword> industry is, and what it means to leave home," she explained. "As one does, you see it in this golden hazy vision, and it's just nothing like how you imagined."</p><p>"I thought I was going to come here, walk off the airplane with my demo CDs, and the head of Universal was going to whisk me away."</p><div type="image" title="baby queen want me promo" height="3000" width="2400" msid="82072031" hostid="261"></div><p>Instead, Latham spent her first three years as a Londoner couch-surfing and sleeping on friends' floors. At one point, she lived with her ex in a riverboat on Regent's Canal. ("In the winter, obviously the river freezes over and it becomes ice. Then the bedsheets would ice over. So intense.") She partied hard and dyed her hair. She received "the most horrendous tattoos" in a questionable hotel room.</p><p>"One says 'milk' and the other says 'metal,'" she told me, rolling her eyes. "I've got to get them taken off. I literally can't tell you what they mean."</p><p>Latham finally managed to land a job at a famous London-based record store, Rough Trade, in 2019. Not long after that, she was offered a record deal.</p><h2>Latham's songwriting is witty and tender, wrapping shrewd observations in timeless pop-rock arrangements</h2><p>In a very modern twist, Latham signed her contract with Polydor Records over Zoom. </p><p>"I was literally sat at my aunt and uncle's kitchen table here in London. So my whole career has obviously been like this," she said.</p><p>Unlike many musicians, Latham didn't need to adapt her career to self-isolation thanks to the pandemic. She built the so-called Baby Kingdom in this hellscape with endearing social-media activity, a steady stream of single releases, music videos to match - and, most importantly, a fearless lyrical talent that transcends the need for traditional career milestones.</p><p>Latham writes about 21st-century voids and all the ways she's tried to fill them: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HX7MKhQXwqY">flexing on Instagram</a>, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_1LaMtXbG8">going to parties, going home when the parties suck</a>, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLkT8nsj1Po">self-medicating</a>, and taking <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KPVuSxzHHc">actual medication</a>. </p><p>She said her most personal lyrics belong to a song that hasn't come out yet ("It's called 'I'm a Mess,' which I'm not supposed to say, but I've said it now"), although "These Drugs" is a close second.</p><p>The song exposes the self-destructive cycle Latham was caught in before seeking professional help, acting as a sort of prelude to "Medicine," an ode to the life-saving pros and numbing cons of anti-depressants.</p><p>"That starting lyric: 'I don't want to do drugs anymore / If you saw me through the eyes of a bathroom stall / Your skin would crawl.' I didn't think that the label was going to let me put that lyric out. I thought they were going to make me change it," she admitted. "They didn't. And then I was like, 'F---.'"</p><p>"But it's good, it's good. I like to shock," she added.</p><p>So far, she's gotten her wish. In just one year, Latham has racked up <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-songs-released-this-year-2020-9">rave reviews</a>, hundreds of thousands of monthly listeners on Spotify, and cosigns from artists like <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CCePCQrHNAH/">The 1975</a> and "Drivers License" phenom <a href="https://www.nme.com/blogs/nme-radar/olivia-rodrigo-drivers-license-interview-2859991">Olivia Rodrigo</a>.</p><p>In <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-albums-female-artists-released-this-year-2020-5">a roundup of 2020's best female albums</a>, I described her debut EP "Medicine" as "a coming-of-age classic." Latham has built on this star-making foundation with a string of new singles, including "Dover Beach," which premieres on Wednesday.</p><p>She penned it last October during a solo writing trip, an excursion inspired by <a href="https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43588/dover-beach">Matthew Arnold's poem "Dover Beach."</a></p><p>"I went to this old Victorian hotel on the beach and I wrote it there," Latham said. "It's about going to see this place that you always wanted to see. But obviously at the same time, I had this really childlike infatuation with somebody. Everywhere I looked, I just saw them."</p><p>"It's like, you can move, you can go away from London, but your daydreams of that person are going to follow you there," she continued. "Yeah, it's about basically just sitting on Dover Beach and being unrequitedly in love."</p><p>The song's production mirrors the theme. Latham's anguished yearning is wrapped in '80s-inspired synths and twinkly chopped-up vocals, like sunlight glinting on the ocean surface.</p><p>Similar to the fan-favorite track <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtDb38fG1gM">"Want Me,"</a> Latham cleverly skewers the self-indulgence that comes with falling for someone from afar. "Dover Beach" is less about the person she's craving and more about the way those thoughts become consuming, warping her own experiences and perception of the world.</p><p>Latham told me she doesn't have much time to date these days ("The politician's answer," she smirks) so it makes sense why her "love songs" detail private musings instead of grand gestures.</p><p>She's also in the process of figuring out her sexuality, which she has "no idea" how to do.</p><p>Latham said she's "mostly dated men," though she's explored queer desire in her music. "Want Me," for example, was inspired by her crush on "Killing Eve" star Jodie Comer; and fans <a href="https://twitter.com/babyqueen/status/1381635593008975873?s=20">recently christened "Raw Thoughts" a "bi anthem"</a> after Latham revealed its erotic lyrics are "not about a man."</p><div type="image" title="baby queen dover beach press photo" height="2000" width="1335" msid="82072038" hostid="261"></div><p>"I'm going to be honest. I don't know," she explained when asked how she identifies. "I'm fine for other people to know that I don't know, because I don't think <em>anyone</em> knows. <a href="https://www.insider.com/celebrities-who-are-bisexual-2017-9">I'd say, like, bisexual - but also, I just don't know!</a> I feel like I need to figure it out. I need to go speed dating."</p><p>"It's quite nice to set the record straight, in a way," she added, chuckling. "I don't think anyone's ever properly asked me about it. But I know that it's the most searched Google question about me. It's like, 'Baby Queen sexuality?'"</p><p>Self-mythology has its limits, especially when you're a 23-year-old on the cusp of superstardom during a pandemic.</p><p>Latham has big hopes for the future, including her forthcoming mixtape and a US tour when it's eventually safe, though she lamented the lack of "real-life experience" in the past year to write about.</p><p>Then again, Latham's done just fine by mining her inner life, from <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6UXphUITt4">social-media delusions</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lByJJSLvITM">dating-app-induced dazes</a> to <keyword id="6355064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Celebrity">celebrity</keyword> crushes and melancholy beach fantasies.</p><p>If Baby Queen stands for anything, it's sincerity and selfhood in a surreal, ridiculous world. After all, who needs reality when you're a Leo with a lilac-purple name?</p>
