<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="14395806" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="dopamine" source="Orion">Dopamine</keyword> is the neurotransmitter that helps people feel pleasure, according to Stanford <keyword id="11905871" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="professor" source="Orion">professor</keyword> Andrew Huberman. </li><li>I followed Huberman's dopamine-detoxing methods for a week to try to reduce my <keyword id="13724042" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="procrastination" source="Orion">procrastination</keyword>.</li></ul><p>As a full-time university student and a freelance writer, focusing on one task at a time can be difficult. From prolonged procrastinating to being easily distracted, getting work done can feel like a chore. </p><p>I became interested in a concept called "<keyword id="14395804" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="dopamine-fasting" source="Orion">dopamine fasting</keyword>" after watching a YouTube video called "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmOF0crdyRU&amp;t=6465s">Controlling Your Dopamine For Motivation, Focus, and Satisfaction</a>," published by Dr. Andrew Huberman, a neuroscientist and professor at Stanford University. In the video, he outlines what dopamine is and how to regulate it to become more productive. </p><p>Throughout my workday, I decided to follow some of Huberman's guidelines and pointers to make myself into a better, more productive person.</p><h2>What is dopamine? </h2><p>Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that communicates between nerve cells in the brain. It helps us feel pleasure and is directly linked to <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/mental-health/serotonin-vs-dopamine">motivation, mood, and sleep, among other things.</a> Low dopamine levels can <a href="https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/dopamine">lessen one's motivation</a>, but high levels can be related to addiction and other impulse-related conditions. Keeping your dopamine levels in check is necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle. </p><p>Something as effortless as checking your Instagram or eating a sugary snack can release dopamine, and that's where the slippery slope of addiction can begin. Once you sink your teeth into that warm, freshly-baked chocolate chip cookie, it usually isn't just one you'll end up eating. The effects of dopamine are temporary, so once you eat that cookie, your dopamine levels will drop lower than they initially were.</p><p>The need to feel that dopamine release again is one factor of addiction. You can replace the cookie with video games, alcohol, or any other pleasurable activity, and it becomes apparent how vital understanding dopamine can be when trying to live a more balanced life. </p><h2><strong>Resisting dopamine-releasing products </strong></h2><p>In the podcast, Huberman pointed out some activities to avoid. Even something as seemingly benign as bringing your phone and listening to music during a workout can yield negative effects. </p><p>Listening to music from your phone while working out "layers in" dopamine, Huberman said. Long-term effects can include a lessening of one's interest in working out and a lowered baseline, because layering in dopamine-releasing activities removes one's pleasure and excitement from the main activity. If you like exercising and always listen to music while working out, you may find that your enjoyment for the workout diminishes over time.</p><p>Like exercising, listening to music from your phone even while working or writing can have similar effects. </p><div type="image" title="A phone, video game controller, and M&amp;M's" height="2882" width="3842" msid="92731230" hostid="261" sizebytes="794472"></div><p>You can still do things that are fun, like listening to music or watching movies, but the rules of dopamine fasting say you should avoid mixing these activities together. For instance, if you want to watch a TV show, don't simultaneously use your phone. </p><h2>Radically altering your lifestyle requires significant initial changes </h2><p>I decided waking up at 5:30 a.m. and going to the gym would give me momentum to start my morning off well. However, saying I'd wake up early and actually doing it are two very different things. </p><p>I bought an $8 timer off of Amazon and connected it to a lamp. Whenever the timer goes off, it'll turn on the power to the lamp. I also scheduled an alarm on my phone and placed it underneath my dorm bed, so I would have to get up to silence it. Pairing these two things together makes it nearly impossible not to wake up.</p><p>To get enough sleep, I also needed to go to bed at a reasonable time. I found somewhere between 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. was a suitable time frame for me.</p><div type="image" title="A pink sunrise over a field" height="3024" width="4032" msid="92731232" hostid="261" sizebytes="1553968"></div><p>Once 5:30 a.m. rolls around, it's time to forget that I'm in a comfortable bed and realize I have responsibilities — namely, my grades and my job. </p><p>After getting up and silencing my alarm, I make my bed. While it may sound arbitrary, making my bed is a simple and easy task that helps propel me throughout the day. </p><h2>Starting the day off right is key </h2><p>I head to the gym and try to limit listening to music and using my phone, since they're dopamine-releasing activities. While no music is ideal at the gym, it can be difficult to adjust to at first. I've found that podcasts are a great middle ground, but I make sure to not use my phone for anything else once in the gym.</p><p>I have an upper- and lower-body routine at the gym, but you can do whatever fits your lifestyle as long as you feel like you've accomplished something. Physically challenging yourself early on is the key to a good day. </p><p>Once I'm back home from the gym, I make myself breakfast. My typical breakfast consists of eggs and a protein shake with fresh peaches.</p><div type="image" title="Scrambled eggs and a protein shake" height="2880" width="3840" msid="92731233" hostid="261" sizebytes="943754"></div><p>After breakfast comes a cold shower.</p><p>While some may have reservations about jumping into an icy shower, doing so has many merits. Cold showers can help with <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/cold-shower-benefits">recovery after a workout and boost immunity</a>, and while it seems miserable at first, it actually becomes mildly pleasant after a minute or so.</p><p>After completing my morning routine, I have plenty of energy and feel motivated to seize the day.</p><h2>Makin<strong>g a schedule and setting goals for success</strong></h2><p>When I get to my desk, I first plan out the day by using a paper calendar. Writing out my goals for the day seems to be the best method for having a visual representation of what I need to get done.</p><p>When creating your schedule, it's best to be lenient at first. If you go for adventurous goals at first and fail to live up to them, <a href="https://hbr.org/2021/01/why-we-set-unattainable-goals">it will decrease your motivation for the future</a>. Giving yourself a strict, yet achievable daily workload will allow you to "graduate" up to more rigid tasks. </p><div type="image" title="A laptop and notebook" height="2959" width="3945" msid="92731234" hostid="261" sizebytes="1092450"></div><p>When starting my work, I try to reduce listening to music with lyrics, but some classical music, especially Max Richter's "Sleep," can help me get into a state of flow. I also put my phone on silent and place it in a different room so I don't feel the urge to pick it up.</p><h2>Keeping the momentum going throughout the day </h2><p>By late morning, I'm typically finished with work from my summer course, a calculus lecture, and homework. Then after lunch, and with my sense of accomplishment from the morning, I start writing and can usually get hard to work on whatever crosses my path. </p><p>By sticking to these guidelines, I'm able to make everyday an extremely productive one. Looking back on the day in the evening, I feel that I've achieved something. This feeling of achievement helps motivate me for the next morning.</p><p>Done right, I wake up with ample energy and want to make each day more productive than the last. This routine has made me into a more regimented person, and the effects may inspire you too.</p>

Reese Witherspoon says 'Legally Blonde' wasn't allowed to film at Stanford University after school greenlit 'Insecure' to shoot on campus

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A group of controversial figures is launching a new university in Austin, <keyword id="11896956" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="texas" source="Orion">Texas</keyword>.</li><li>They say they want to promote "freedom of inquiry, freedom of conscience, and civil discourse."</li></ul><p>A group of controversial figures is launching a new college in Austin, Texas, that describes itself as being "dedicated to the fearless pursuit of truth." Several of the founders have said they faced "cancel culture" for their controversial opinions. </p><p>"We are alarmed by the illiberalism and censoriousness prevalent in America's most prestigious universities and what it augurs for the country. But we know that there are enough of us who still believe in the core purpose of higher <keyword id="11897808" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="education" source="Orion">education</keyword>, the pursuit of truth. That's why we are building UATX," the <a href="https://www.uaustin.org/">University of Austin's website</a> reads. </p><p>The university will be "a liberal arts university committed to freedom of inquiry, freedom of conscience, and civil discourse," according to the website, which claims that "others have abandoned this core mission of the university." </p><p>The school is not yet able to confer degrees and is currently seeking accreditation. Courses will begin this summer, starting with a program called "Forbidden Courses," in which students will engage in "a spirited discussion about the most provocative questions that often lead to censorship or self-censorship in many universities," according to the website. </p><p>Founding parties of UATX include Bari Weiss, an outspoken critic of "cancel culture" who left her position at The New York Times complaining of an "illiberal environment," according to her <a href="https://www.bariweiss.com/resignation-letter">public resignation letter</a>. Kathleen Stock, a professor from the University of Sussex who <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/education/2021/nov/03/kathleen-stock-says-she-quit-university-post-over-medieval-ostracism">resigned following complaints of transphobia</a>, is also on the board of advisors for UATX. </p><p>Several members of the board of advisors touted the new university on Monday.</p><p>Pano Kanelos, the founding president of the new university, said founders expect "to face significant resistance to this project." Kanelos was the former president of St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland. </p><p>"There are networks of donors, foundations, and activists that uphold and promote the status quo. There are parents who expect the status quo. There are students who demand it, along with even greater restrictions on academic freedom. And there are administrators and professors who will feel threatened by any disruption to the system," <a href="https://bariweiss.substack.com/p/we-cant-wait-for-universities-to">Kanelos wrote on substack</a>. </p><p>Advisor Niall Ferguson, a conservative who <a href="https://www.sfgate.com/education/article/Niall-Ferguson-Stanford-Hoover-fellow-emails-12964226.php">quit his position at Standford University</a> following allegations that he encouraged Republican students to do "opposition research" on a progressive student in 2018, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2021-11-08/niall-ferguson-america-s-woke-universities-need-to-be-replaced">published an op-ed in Bloomberg</a>. </p><p>"Trigger warnings. Safe spaces. Preferred pronouns. Checked privileges. Microaggressions. Antiracism. All these terms are routinely deployed on campuses throughout the English-speaking world as part of a sustained campaign to impose ideological conformity in the name of diversity," Ferguson wrote. "As a result, it often feels as if there is less free speech and free thought in the American university today than in almost any other institution in the U.S."</p><p>Ferguson's spouse, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/ayaan-hirsi-ali-wokeism-white-supremacy">Ayaan Hirsi Ali</a>, an outspoken critic of "wokeism," is also on the board. </p><p>Peter Boghossian, who <a href="https://www.opb.org/article/2021/09/09/longtime-psu-instructor-quits-citing-harassment-lack-of-free-speech/">resigned from Portland State University</a> this September after calling the university a "Social Justice factory," said on <a href="https://twitter.com/peterboghossian/status/1457747152994668547?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet">Twitter</a> that since UATX was announced, he has "received dozens of pleading emails from faculty around the country" who want to join the effort. </p><p>The University of Austin is not to be confused with the <a href="https://www.utexas.edu/">University of Texas at Austin</a>, which is about a 60-second walk from where the UATX has set up shop. The University of Austin headquarters is located at 2112 Rio Grande Street in Austin, which is nestled in the off-campus housing area for UT Austin students. A spokesperson from UT Austin declined Insider's request for comment. </p><p>UATX is "in the process of securing land in the Austin area for a campus," according to the website. When asked<a href="https://www.uaustin.org/faq"></a> about why Austin was the chosen location for the campus on the <a href="https://www.uaustin.org/faq">site's FAQ page</a>, UATX said: "If it's good enough for Elon Musk and Joe Rogan, it's good enough for us."</p>

It's a stomach-dropping, heart-racing feeling, "like college admissions all over again," the 19-year-old told Insider.</p><p>For many students at Stanford University, getting tested and receiving results has become a normal part of their unconventional semester. But the stakes feel higher for Pe, who is an international student from Manila, Philippines, and the coronavirus is always in the back of her mind as she adjusts to her new life.</p><p>"We don't want to mess up our chance and be sent home," the prospective science, technology, and society major said, adding that there's "a lot more awareness" for students like her.</p><p>Pe fears that a positive test could be the equivalent of a ticket back home, she said. If Pe's results were traced back to a large gathering or off-campus party, she could face serious repercussions, like being removed from campus or losing her visa.</p><div type="image" title="Audrey Pe" height="900" width="1200" msid="79196402" hostid="261"></div><h2>Weekly COVID-19 tests and a campus agreement not to gather</h2><p>In August, Stanford University largely reversed plans to bring students to campus. But graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and some undergraduate students — like international students — can still live on-site.</p><p>These students are required to test weekly for the virus, and at the beginning of the semester, the 600 undergrads living on campus signed a "<a href="https://campuscompact.stanford.edu/undergraduate-students">campus compact</a>," similar to a code of conduct. It barred partying and gathering in groups, and students who signed also agreed to get tested weekly, wear a face mask, and participate in social distancing. </p><p>Consequences for violating the compact range from "issuing a warning, requiring additional training or <keyword id="6355445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="education">education</keyword>, restricting access to Stanford facilities or removal from campus, including housing."</p><p>Since mid-October, the campus has received 139 reported violations of public <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="health">health</keyword> rules, though none have gone to the university's review panel, according to <a href="https://www.stanforddaily.com/2020/10/15/despite-139-reported-violations-of-public-health-rules-stanford-reiterates-plans-for-students-to-return-in-winter/">The Stanford Daily</a>. Still, roughly <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScrrGDaAkK2uUB9fZfNLuETAQdUBwkcmxv15P9yx-cxlodtoQ/viewform">1,5000 students signed a petition</a> to change the graduate student campus compact, citing that the document was "vague and coercive." </p><p>However, Pe was happy there was a contract. "I felt very reassured, if anything, that the university was putting out these types of measures to hold students accountable," she said.</p><div type="image" title="Audrey Pe" height="902" width="1200" msid="79196403" hostid="261"></div><h2>One week into the semester, Pe said all her friends were taking things seriously, though she said she saw some "questionably large-sized groups" </h2><p>"It's a mixed bag," she said. "Stanford, like any university, does have quite a diverse set of people with different perspectives on that."</p><p>Meanwhile, her group of friends shares the same views on social distancing: They're all still doing it.</p><p>She attributes their consistent rule-following to the fact that they're all international students. For this group, contracting the virus comes with a different set of worries, even outside of school-mandated consequences — many don't have a home to easily access. </p><p>"Right now, the stakes are higher," she said. "Because if I got sick back home in Manila, I'd have a home I could self-quarantine in and not much would change really. Here, if I get sick, I'm going to be transferred to another residence on the other side of campus."</p><p>That looming fear of being placed in an isolation dorm, along with awareness of the campus compact's consequences, cause Pe to painstakingly think through every decision. Wearing a mask has become a "reflex," and simple things, like grabbing a coffee with a friend, take more planning. </p><p>Before arriving at Stanford's campus, Pe and her family had a long discussion mapping out worst-case scenarios, she said. They were concerned that high case numbers could lead Standford to close its campus. (So far, a low number of cases, along with Stanford's decision to keep its <a href="https://paloaltoonline.com/news/2020/03/06/stanford-cancels-in-person-classes-two-students-possibly-exposed-to-coronavirus-in-self-isolation">campus closed last spring</a>, has stopped that.)</p><p>And even in that worst-case scenario, Pe acknowledged that she's lucky — she has extended family on the west coast. Many of her international friends, however, don't have that added comfort. </p><p>Pe also said she's unsure what would happen to her visa if the campus were to close. In March, the <a href="https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/ice-continues-march-guidance-fall-school-term">US Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced</a> that all new international students at US colleges would be required to take at least one in-person course. A closed campus would, in theory, mean no in-person classes.</p><h2><div type="image" title="Audrey Pe" height="900" width="1200" msid="79196405" hostid="261"></div></h2><h2>Getting to college was a challenge, so Pe has no plans to mess it up</h2><p>Pe said getting to the US for college was a roller coaster. She faced challenges like understanding the US college application process, envisioning a campus she had never stepped foot on, additional costs, and facing the reality that she'd be thousands of miles away from her parents.</p><p>But this year, Pe and other international students had even bigger challenges. Embassies were closed, which made visa appointments harder to get. Pe's visa interviews were rescheduled three or four times, and for a period, she was unsure if she'd get her visa in time for the fall semester. </p><p>"It was a very, very anxious period of time," she said.</p><p>Now that she's here, the last thing she wants is to contract the virus. "Not to say that the American students don't experience that as well, but I think as internationals, we're really cognizant of the fact that we've had to come so far," she said.</p><p>That awareness means her friend group is transparent about their actions. Conversations about testing and social distancing happen on a regular basis, and they all hold each other accountable for getting tested regularly, she said. </p><p>Although Pe hasn't been invited to any large parties on or off campus, she said she wouldn't hesitate to turn the invitation down. "A one or two-hour party isn't worth all the possible consequences," she said.</p><p>For now, she's content with one-on-one interactions. Inside the hyper-vigilant life of an international student at Stanford, where a positive COVID-19 test could mean a ticket home

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A family of seven from Washington all tested positive for COVID-19, several days after losing their home to a wildfire.</li><li>Matthew and Jessica Graham and their five children, aged five to 10, lost their entire home and belongings after a fire ravaged their town of Malden, Washington, on September 7.</li><li>While staying with family members, the Grahams tested positive for COVID-19.</li><li>They initially didn't realize they were sick because they thought the symptoms resulted from breathing in smoke from the fires.</li></ul><p>A family of seven from Washington all tested positive for COVID-19, days after losing their home to the West Coast <keyword id="394841" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="wildfires">wildfires</keyword>. </p><p>Matthew and Jessica Graham and their five children, aged five to 10, fled their home in the small town of Malden, Washington, on September 7 after Matthew had a premonition that the Babb Road Fire — which at that point had been in nearby areas — was coming closer.</p><p>"It was really windy that day, when we were leaving, Matthew made a comment, 'I hope there's not a fire today because they would not be able to stop it with how this wind is,'" said Jessica Graham, <a href="https://www.q13fox.com/news/washington-family-loses-home-in-wildfire-then-all-test-positive-for-covid-19">according to local television station Q13 Fox.</a></p><p>By the end of the day, the entire town had been destroyed by the fire, with the Graham family's house, barn, and everything they owned inside burned to ash.</p><p>"It's just surreal, like being in a bad dream and you're like, this can't be real," said Jessica, according to Q13 Fox. "I was more in shock than I would have imagined, I felt numb a lot for the first few days."</p><p>But days later, as the Grahams stayed in their relatives' homes, more misfortune struck: Matthew started developing symptoms of COVID-19.</p><p>The family initially thought the symptoms came from the heavy smoke they had been breathing in from the fires, but even though the smoke cleared, the symptoms remained.</p><p>"The nurse asked me if there was a whole group of us with the same last names that had been tested," Matthew said, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/washington-state-family-loses-home-wildfire-then-gets-covid-19-n1242022">according to NBC News</a>. "And I told her, 'Yeah, there are.' And she said: 'Yeah, they're all positive. Everybody has it.'"</p><div type="image" title="Malden, Washington. Burned property." height="1333" width="1777" msid="78479374" hostid="261"></div><p>All seven family members tested positive for COVID-19, alongside Matthew's mother, Jessica's father, and family friends who had dropped off food for the family before their <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> diagnosis.</p><p>While the children only had mild symptoms, Jessica and Matthew suffered severely.</p><p>"It's just like hitting a brick wall with this overwhelming exhaustion," said Jessica, according to Q13 Fox.</p><p>"People don't adequately describe how miserable coronaviruses are in general," said Matthew, Q13 Fox reported. "Curled up in the fetal position, not moving, that really isn't a good state to be in." </p><p>The family spent their quarantine packed in a hotel room and have since <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/the-graham-family-lost-everything-in-a-wildfire">set up a GoFundMe page</a> to help cover costs, that has already received tens of thousands of dollars worth of donations. They plan to go house hunting as soon as they recover from the illness. </p><p>"This will be a year that we look back on and we'll all probably be vastly stronger people for it," said Matthew.</p><p>Wildfires have taken a terrible toll on the West Coast this summer. Washington family of seven lost their home to wildfires then they all fell sick with the coronavirus

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The US <keyword id="50403" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Immigration">Immigration</keyword> Custom and Enforcement agency said in a July 6 announcement that <keyword id="113647" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="International-students">international students</keyword> taking courses entirely online would not be allowed to remain in the US.</li><li>Some <keyword id="6356001" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="international">international</keyword> students that are relying on visas to continue their <keyword id="6355445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="education">education</keyword> told Insider that they are unsettled by the new ICE guidelines which may jeopardize their ability to stay in the country.</li><li>Students say the Trump administration's anti-immigration stance has changed their "idealized vision" of study or work in the US – one even says she's considering "transferring from the US to another country" depending on the presidential election in November.</li><li>Many of these students say they stand to lose support systems they've built in the US in addition to their academic progress.</li></ul><p>Gabriella de Lorenzo left Brazil and headed for <keyword id="6360288" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="College">college</keyword> in New York City two years ago. After the coronavirus pandemic reached the US, she took to virtual classes after spring break when schools closed in March to help slow the virus spread. But recent guidelines from <keyword id="398691" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Immigration-and-Customs-Enforcement">Immigration and Customs Enforcement</keyword> (ICE) would prevent her and other international students on certain visas from attending schools that are fully online in the fall. </p><p>Last week, ICE <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/international-students-visas-cant-take-only-online-classes-ice-2020-7">announced a new policy</a> that forbids international students with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/harvard-international-students-ask-return-campus-fall-classes-remote-ice-2020-7">F-1 and M-1 visas</a> to remain in the United States if their schools are "operating entirely online." F-1 visas allow people to enter the US as a student at a four-year college or graduate degree program and remain legally until they graduate; M-1s do the same, but for technical or vocational schools.</p><p>In response, <a href="https://www.insider.com/lack-of-clarity-in-ice-guidelines-looms-over-university-hybrid-courses">many universities have announced they will use a "hybrid model," </a>combining both in-person and online courses for the upcoming academic year, but the new <keyword id="28351" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="policy">policy</keyword> lacks clarity in what may be required for a model that'll help keep international students in the US.</p><p>The July 6 directive was met with swift backlash, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/harvard-and-mit-contest-order-depor-international-students-studying-online-2020-7">with 17 states and Washington DC filing a lawsuit to block the motion, while Harvard and MIT led a similar, different lawsuit, which soon got the support of 200 more universities</a>. And during a hearing for the lawsuit Tuesday, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ice-may-reverse-directive-that-could-deport-international-students-2020-7">US government agreed to rescind the guidelines</a>.</p><p>Still, for de Lorenzo, the agency's rule, she told Insider, sent a message to <a href="https://www.iie.org/Why-IIE/Announcements/2019/11/Number-of-International-Students-in-the-United-States-Hits-All-Time-High">hundreds of thousands of students</a> like her that, "We're not welcome."</p><h2><strong>"I don't want my future to be in the hands of some people who don't welcome me"</strong></h2><p>Eda Erata, a Ph.D. candidate from Turkey at Duke's Cell and Molecular Biology program, like de Lorenzo, feels unwelcomed by the new ICE policy and told Insider that she believes the decision is "an extension of racist ideology."</p><p>"I don't want my future to be in the hands of some people who don't welcome me," Erata told Insider. "I don't want to be in a country where I don't know if maybe next week there will be regulations released all of a sudden that will dramatically change my future here."</p><p>In the fall, Erata will be a fifth-year Ph.D. student, meaning she would no longer take classes so she can focus squarely on her lab research. Erata's lab has been operating partially in-person through staggered shifts for about a month, but since she's no longer enrolled in courses, a rule that requires her to attend in-person classes could interrupt her research. </p><p>If Erata has to leave, she told Insider, she'll have to delay her graduation.</p><h2>"We're their students — although we're not citizens"</h2><p>Suah Cho was one of over 4,000 students to sign <a href="https://www.stanforddaily.com/2020/07/07/international-students-taking-only-online-courses-may-be-forced-to-leave-the-us/">a petition</a> that called on Standford University to allow international students to take in-person classes so they'd maintain their visa status. The university had joined more than <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/more-than-200-schools-back-lawsuit-over-foreign-student-rule-2020-7">200 schools</a> that supported the lawsuit against the policy. </p><p>"We're their students — although we're not citizens, we're Stanford students," said Cho, a rising junior from South Korea, adding that updates from the university regarding the ICE announcement are "more generic than what we want."</p><p>For many students, the since-rescinded guidelines coupled with the Trump administration's most recent decision to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-executive-order-work-visas-immigration-2020-6">suspend the issuing of new H-1B</a> foreign worker visas — which will affect many professions like those in the tech industry and at universities — sent a disheartening message. </p><p>"The US has always been a country where people come to follow their dreams basically," de Lorenzo told Insider. "This feels like a slap on the face. "</p><p>The Brazilian national said she's built a life for herself in the US. In addition to school, she is enrolled in a 12-step program that has become a support system for her struggles with mental illness. Also, she said, her significant other is an American citizen.</p><p>"I know my place," de Lorenzo said. "I know I'm not a citizen."</p><p>She continued: "I've made a life here for myself, so it's hard to leave ... but honestly, depending on how the elections are, I might consider transferring from the US to another country."</p><p>Annette Joseph-Gabriel, who had an H-1B status until last year, couldn't imagine being in international students' position today. </p><p>Joseph-Gabriel came to the US from Ghana for her undergraduate degree in 2005. International students are losing their 'idealized vision' of the US and weighing options to leave the country if Trump wins in November

Senator Jeff Merkley announces he's not running for president in 2020

"Caused huge economic damage to his follower's pocketbooks. He, and others, should be fired by @nytimes!"</p><p>The tweet included a video shared by libertarian radio host Larry Elder that showed economist Thomas Sowell talking about the economy under the Trump administration, which specifically targeted Krugman's past predictions. </p><p>"The economy is booming in a way that no one had predicted," Sowell said in the clip. "People like Paul Krugman were saying that when Trump gets in, the economy is going to tank. No, the economy hit new highs."</p><p>The video clip of Sowell seems to be taken from a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mS5WYp5xmvI">November 2018</a> interview posted by the Hoover Institute, a public policy think tank at Standford University, where Sowell is a fellow. </p><p>Krugman responded to Trump on <a href="https://twitter.com/paulkrugman/status/1221474683020873728?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet">Twitter</a> later Sunday. </p><p>"I usually ignore Twitter trolls, but it's kind of amazing how much rent-free space I seem to occupy in Trump's head," Krugman tweeted after the president called for him to be fired. "Shouldn't he be focused on threatening Adam Schiff?"</p><p>The president often directs his ire toward Schiff, a Democrat from California and the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, over his handling of Trump's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-demands-to-meet-whistleblower-accuses-adam-schiff-of-treason-2019-9">impeachment</a>. </p><p>Besides the 2018 video shared by Elder, there wasn't a clear indication of what, exactly, set Trump off Sunday, though Krugman's most recent January 23 column published by The New York Times criticizes Trump for "<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/23/opinion/trump-auto-tariff.html">abusing his tariff power</a>." </p><p>As Markets Insider reported, Sunday wasn't the first time the president had attacked Krugman, the president also lashed out at the New York Times columnist in a tweet January 20. </p><p>"If you listened to the flawed advice of @paulkrugman at the @nytimes, a newspaper that was going broke until I came along, you would have entirely missed the RECORD BREAKING Stock Market (and other) numbers produced since Election Day, 2016," Trump <a href="https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1218697758728769536" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tweeted</a> last week. "Sorry, those are the FACTS....."</p><p>Krugman, a longtime critic of the 45th president, predicted that his election in 2016 would lead to global economic fallout, believing that Trump would tighten the Federal Reserve. Donald Trump calls for The New York Times to fire economist Paul Krugman in the latest escalation of their longtime feud

And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew, we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so, things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. And so, at 30, I was out... and very publicly out. He was down, no one pushed him, but he was off the Mac, which was his deal - he never forgave me for that.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"He started NeXt and was sued by the board for hiring Apple engineers, <strong>but he was never fired by Apple."</strong></p><p>Its hard to imagine that Apple sued its own co-founder and still-sitting chairman for hiring Apple engineers for a new venture. But that's the way Sculley remembers it.</p><p>In 20/20 hindsight, Sculley also admitted on stage (as he has done repeatedly) that the episode was a mistake.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">I look back and think what a mistake on my part. Corporate America was secular and there just wasn't the passion you see today where there is such respect for founders. John Sculley: Steve Jobs 'was never fired' from Apple

<p>In 2005 officials detained <span>Rahinah </span>Ibrahim when she attempted to fly from San Francisco International Airport to her native Malaysia. The then-Standford doctoral student and her 14-year-old daughter were allowed to take a flight the next day but were not allowed to return to the U.S. two months later.</p>
<p>The U.S. Consulate later informed her that <strong>her student visa had been revoked under a <keyword id="6358165" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="terrorism">terrorism</keyword> <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Law">law</keyword></strong>, according to <span>Egelko</span>.</p>
<p><span>In 2009 Ibrahim</span> settled claims against police and others involved in her arrest for $225,000, but brought a new suit because her inclusion on the no-fly list has barred her and her daughter from returning to the U.S. for nearly eight years. (<span>Ibrahim has four children.)</span></p>
<p><strong>The government argues that it cannot discuss its no-fly list because it would "reveal or tend to reveal information that is classified."</strong></p>
<p>Consequently the Justice Department called District Judge William Alsup and said an agent would bring him evidence for dismissal of the suit but would take it back because <span>Ibrahim's counsel couldn't be "trusted to handle sensitive information."</span></p>

<p>Alsup — who had actually dismissed Ibrahim's case twice before but was overruled on appeals — <strong>refused to see the secret evidence</strong> and scheduled the trial for December.</p>
<p>The judge added that the government must stop "persistent and stubborn refusal" to follow the legal precedents for sharing evidence.</p>
