After all, giving someone control over your facial features on an important day requires a lot of trust.</p><p>That's why it helps to know what to look out for when working with a makeup artist.</p><p>Business Insider asked qualified makeup professionals to share their insights. Here are seven <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/red-flags-bad-facial-signs-from-estheticians-2024-9">red flags to look out for</a> when getting your makeup done.</p><h2 id="a9057eec-044e-4a52-bb12-78ccb381d3f0"><strong>Makeup artists should ask a lot of questions</strong></h2><p>Hollywood-based makeup artist <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/artistrybyalyssa/">Alyssa McGinley</a> emphasized the importance of both the artist and the client being on the same page.</p><p>"If your artist isn't asking a lot of questions, it can be hard to be sure that you will feel safe and happy with your services," she said.</p><p>She recommends looking for artists who inquire about topical allergies and sensitivities, as well as the occasion, your wardrobe, and the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/makeup-artist-how-to-update-beauty-routine-spend-less-money-2022-11">makeup you wear daily</a>.</p><p>The artist may also want to know additional details about the event you're attending, like if it's indoors or outdoors.</p><p>"These details can seem insignificant, but the answers to those questions can greatly impact the products and techniques that artist will use, and ensure your happiness with their services," McGinley said.</p><h2 id="f11ebcc2-3519-45b2-b11b-4f9bdf65a684"><strong>All brushes and tools should be properly sanitized</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Different-sized makeup brushes in clear-acrylic cups." height="1415" width="1887" msid="113674611" hostid="261" sizebytes="136176"></div><p>"Getting your makeup done can be such a fun experience, but the artist is dealing with very sensitive parts of your body, such as your eyes and mouth," McGinley said. "It's their job to ensure you're protected from infection and irritation."</p><p>McGinley suggests looking out for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hacks-for-cleaning-makeup-brushes-2018-4">dirty brushes</a>, sponges, or application tools — they should be mostly free of stains or product buildup. There should also be visible sanitizing supplies like alcohol sprays, wipes, and brush cleaners.</p><p>If your artist is working off of a metal, glass, or acrylic palette, it should be free of any product, sprayed with alcohol, and wiped clean before use.</p><h2 id="b1a9d822-6df4-4fe7-ab67-8dfb1fb025a3">Makeup artists should also have a collection of single-use application tools</h2><p>"Watch out for artists applying any product straight from the container onto your face, especially when working with cream products like lipstick, cream foundations, and mascaras," McGinley said. "The product should never be applied directly to the skin, as cream products can harbor bacteria and transmit infection."</p><p>For this reason, makeup artists should have a collection of single-use application tools, including lip and mascara wands, powder puffs, and sponges.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/createdbeautyco">Jazmin Sykes</a>, an Arizona-based makeup artist and educator, agreed, saying there should only be one dip per disposable applicator to ensure cleanliness and sanitation.</p><h2 id="b5add8c6-6675-4e0c-a0ce-1a4a69333123"><strong>Reconsider working with someone who doesn't have an accurate portfolio of their work</strong></h2><p>According to McGinley, "Not every artist will have a perfectly curated Instagram feed, but there should always be a source that you can access that shows the artist's collection of work."</p><p>She recommends looking for social-media profiles or websites with photo and video examples of their work.</p><p>However, when looking at an artist's Instagram page, Sykes suggested remaining vigilant and checking to see if the photos look filtered.</p><p>"Look on Instagram to see their work, and most importantly, click on their tagged tab to see what other people have posted about their work," Sykes said. "Their main page can be perfectly edited with filters to look pretty, but the tagged tab will show what clients have posted."</p><h2 id="2f3515c8-47af-4592-b094-3d5edbb51b97"><strong>Beware of makeup artists who aren't responsive or communicative</strong></h2><p>McGinley warned against working with makeup artists who aren't punctual with their responses leading up to your services.</p><p>For important events, in particular, there should be plenty of communication beforehand to ensure everyone is on time.</p><p>"Everyone has a busy schedule, but keep an eye out for last-minute rescheduling, cancellations, or extended periods of time without communication," she said.</p><h2 id="e3e20dc3-b693-42f5-a1ec-9bf72bbcd157"><strong>A makeup artist should never ask the client to bring their own makeup</strong></h2><div type="image" title="A professional makeup kit with brushes and makeup palettes on a table." height="1412" width="1883" msid="113674613" hostid="261" sizebytes="196890"></div><p>According to Sykes, when a makeup artist asks the client to bring their own products, it's a sign that the artist isn't fully knowledgeable or confident in foundation matching or color theory.</p><p>"Asking the client to provide their own makeup shows unprofessionalism," Sykes said.</p><p>Instead, makeup artists should come prepared with products for every skin type and shade.</p><p>"The only exception where someone should, or can, provide their own product is for a skin sensitivity or medical condition," she added.</p><h2 id="838a1dc0-de26-4cd4-9c68-10a509a7d948"><strong>It's best to have a written agreement in place, especially for special events</strong></h2><p>Depending on the occasion and services required, a written agreement may not always be necessary. But for important events like a wedding, it's always best to have a contract or written agreement in place.</p><p>McGinley said the agreement should outline the services you expect to receive, a clear date and time, a cost breakdown, and a cancellation policy.</p>

I'm learning French, adopting a French diet of baguettes and butter, and swapping my leggings for floral-print dresses and Adidas Sambas.</span></p><p><span>And yet, when I'm in Mom Mode with my 7-year-old son, Oliver, I just can't hide the fact that I'm American. For one thing, American parents tend to hover, tagging a few feet behind the kids while they run around the playground. Although my son is fairly self-sufficient at age 7, I definitely stuck close to him when he was younger, loudly pointing out dangers and reminding him to be careful, standing ready to catch him if he fell, and even intervening if he encountered a poorly behaved kid. This kind of helicopter behavior is fairly common among American parents — but less so in France.</span></p><p><span>French parents are a lot more likely to park themselves on a bench and allow their kids to wander around on their own. I've seen French toddlers set free on their </span><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/fitness/best-kids-bike"><span>balance bikes</span></a><span> at the skatepark and allowed to climb up jungle gyms with no one within catching distance. And guess what? They survive. </span></p><p><span>In fact, I rarely hear crying children at French playgrounds or witness so much as a </span><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/conditions-symptoms/friction-burn"><span>skinned knee</span></a><span>. French parents still keep tabs on their kids but give them space to figure things out on their own.</span></p><h2 id="c44676c9-f140-4857-966b-ca46e30ee6fd"><span>French kids are always impeccably dressed</span></h2><p><span>It may sound like French kids are running wild, but that's not the case — and their wardrobes are evidence of that. French kids are usually impeccably dressed, clearly by their parents. </span></p><p><span>Girls often wear pretty cotton dresses with tights, ballet flats, and matching bows in their hair, while the boys wear nice pants and button-up-shirts topped off with a thick sweater or jacket — sometimes even on warm days (because the French dress for the calendar rather than the weather). The crazy thing is, no matter how long they've been on the playground, or even after a long day at school, these kids still look so fresh and so clean. </span></p><p><span>Meanwhile, my American boy is immediately recognizable for his comfortable athleticwear — soft joggers, T-shirts, hoodies, and sneakers. He's also usually the only one running around in short sleeves on chilly days, usually with stains somewhere on his clothes. </span></p><p><span>I may get occasional disapproving looks, but I think it's important to let my kid dress the way he wants. Even more importantly, I'm proud that he's recognized that he dresses differently than his French classmates, and he's OK with it. In fact, he's told me he likes being different, and I love that about him.</span></p><h2 id="e458014e-1a9f-4350-8c2e-8d363c587cea"><span>I'm trying not to be a yeller</span></h2><p><span>I'm not sure how the French kids are able to stay so neat, but I suspect it has something to do with how French parents reprimand and discipline their kids. Yelling is very common among parents in the US — so much so that their reprimands are often completely ignored by their kids. This is partially why I made the decision to try not to be a yeller even before having my son, but I still do let out the occasional holler: Look out! Stop that! Five more minutes! And when I do that in France, I get stared at — because French parents rarely raise their voices. </span></p><p><span>When a French kid does something naughty, they're pulled aside and very quietly and sternly reprimanded. It seems to be a whole lot more effective than yelling because the French kids I've encountered are generally a pretty calm, well-behaved lot.</span></p><h2 id="89e19984-956b-4eea-80d6-4314d8b85d69"><span>I rarely see kids with iPads</span></h2><p>I've witnessed this good behavior often in restaurants, where French kids typically sit quietly and politely, even for the duration of long meals. I was struck by this at a recent cafe lunch, where a young boy about my son's age ordered beef tartare and spoke quietly with his parents throughout the meal. Meanwhile, my son was noshing on fries, drinking Coke from a bottle, and playing games on my phone. </p><p><span>I've rarely seen </span><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kids-should-be-banned-from-smartphones-until-13-french-report-2024-5"><span>French kids with screens</span></a><span> (or sodas) at a restaurant. Do I wish my kid was more like Tartare Boy? Sure I do — and sometimes he is. But I also feel like it's a lot to ask an energetic child to sit still for over an hour at a quiet restaurant. And I'm 100% OK with letting him have a few minutes of screen time in exchange for allowing my husband and I to enjoy our meal and a few minutes of adult conversation.</span></p><h2 id="bce15c1c-4a9b-445b-b228-87fe38b035f8"><span>My kid snacks more than any of his friends</span></h2><p><span>Restaurants aren't the only place where I've noted differences regarding food. My kid snacks — a lot. And like many American families, we often have a selection of junk food in the house, such as chips, sugary cereal, and ice cream. </span></p><p><span>I've always let my son snack throughout the day because he's super active, and he's just as likely to reach for yogurt or cucumbers as a handful of cookies. But when his French friends have come over to play, they seem genuinely perplexed when he offers them snacks, and they don't have the expected response when he opens up our snack cabinet. One asked if she could have a glass of milk instead, while another asked if we had any fruit. </span></p><p><span>We've learned that French kids usually snack only once per day, during "gouter" which is around 4:30 p.m., when they get out of school. This seems to be sufficient to tide them over until dinner. Otherwise, mid-meal snacking isn't common — which is probably a big reason childhood obesity (and obesity in general) is not an epidemic in France as it is in the US.</span></p><p><span>I have a lot of respect for French moms, but I know I will never be mistaken for one. While I'm sure I'll be taking some lessons and making some changes during our time in France, I've also made peace with some of the things that make me an American mom. Fitting in is great, but sometimes you just have to stay true to yourself.</span></p>

I've been on nearly 30 cruises. Here are 11 things I always pack and 4 I leave at home.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I recently shopped my first sample sale, where brands <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-save-money-on-clothes-2018-12">sell clothes at discounted rates</a>.</li><li>I was glad I wore an outfit I could try clothes on top of because the fitting room wasn't private. </li></ul><p>I love to shop, and my most recent hunt for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/gen-z-stylist-clothes-accessories-to-add-to-wardrobe-2023-9">good deals</a> led me to my first sample sale.</p><p>Sample sales are where shoppers can find name-brand and high-end items at heavily discounted prices, sometimes up to 90% off retail. </p><p>Many brands use these sales to get rid of overstock or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/clothes-and-accessories-that-went-out-of-style-this-year-2023">clothes from past seasons</a>.</p><p>But with big deals also come large crowds and strict limitations, giving <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/tiktoker-enjoyed-cult-gaia-sample-sale-line-bridal-attire-friends-2023-5">sample sales</a> their overwhelming, difficult-to-navigate reputation.</p><p>Here's what I did right at my first sample sale, and what I'd do differently next time.</p><h2><strong>My outfit was great for quickly trying clothes on over it</strong></h2><p>Sample sales typically don't have private fitting rooms, so<strong> </strong>I prepared to try clothing on in the open by wearing a tight top and bike shorts under a skirt.</p><p>At this Rent the Runway sample sale in Chicago, the fitting area was a communal space shared with seven other people. It was blocked off with a curtain. </p><p>Each person was allowed 10 minutes and 10 items in the fitting room, so trying pieces on over my outfit helped me save time and kept me from feeling too exposed.</p><p>I also recommend wearing shoes that are easy to slip off to help <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-know-if-your-clothes-dont-actually-fit">speed up the try-on process</a>.</p><h2><strong>I avoided buying items just because they were a low price</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Photo of Rent the runway sample sale price sheets" height="911" width="1280" msid="105761432" hostid="261" sizebytes="50956"></div><p>It's really tempting to see a ton of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/clothes-you-should-buy-cheap-and-splurge-on-stylist">designer items at low prices</a>. I found myself grabbing pieces because they were only over $100 and on sale for $35.</p><p>But I kept myself in check by considering cost-per-wear while shopping to see if something would actually be worth it for me to buy.</p><p>I asked myself, "If I saw this piece for $10 at Goodwill, would I buy it?" For a lot of the pieces, I found I would've thought $10 was too much.</p><h2><strong>I gave myself plenty of time to shop</strong></h2><p>High-interest sample sales often bring large crowds before doors open. For the best shopping experience, I recommend getting there early.</p><p>I was able to sift through everything I was interested in, and I had time to think about my purchases before checking out.</p><h2><strong>Bonding with other shoppers made the experience way more pleasant</strong></h2><p>I expected the sample sale to be a bit cutthroat, but I was pleasantly surprised by how friendly everyone was.</p><p>The fitting area acted as a hype corner, where shoppers complimented each other. I just had to make sure not to forget my phone in the bag.</p><h2><strong>I'll manage my expectations in the future when it comes to personal space</strong></h2><p>When I entered and saw a wide-open sales floor, I expected to have room to shop and browse, but that wasn't always the case.</p><p>The sales floor was laid out well, and there was plenty of room to sift through items, but personal space was another story.</p><p>On multiple occasions, shoppers were breathing down my neck to investigate out-of-season dresses or Theory tops. </p><p>Despite many racks having the same items, I was often confined to a few inches of rack space at a time by other shoppers. </p><h2><strong>At my next sale, I'll inspect the pieces better</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Hand holding a hanger with an orange floral skirt with a yellow &quot;Stain&quot; sticker on it with an arrow pointing to the stain" height="477" width="456" msid="105761434" hostid="261" sizebytes="35400"></div><p>At most sample sales, there's a chance <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/clothes-and-accessories-fashion-experts-will-never-get-rid-of">some items won't be in perfect condition</a>. A few pieces were clearly labeled with "stain" stickers at this sale.</p><p>Still, I only had 10 minutes to try on 10 items, so I failed to notice a hole in one of the dresses I bought.</p><p>Though it was my fault for missing it, it was still frustrating — especially since all sales were final, which is common at sample sales.</p><h2><strong>I'll also bring someone with me who can take photos while I try things on</strong></h2><p>The fitting area had large mirrors, but the sales floor didn't, making it hard to try on things like jackets and sunglasses while shopping.</p><p>Next time, I'll bring someone to snap photos while I try things on. This would've been especially helpful since the fitting room had a 10-item limit.</p><h2><strong>Lastly, I shouldn't have expected every piece to be a gem</strong></h2><p>Much like at a thrift store, you have to root through many items at sample sales to find pieces that excite you, reduced price or not.</p><p>When you do, though, it can be worth the hunt. I left with three quality pieces that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/clothes-everyone-should-own-2018-4">filled gaps in my wardrobe</a> without breaking the bank. </p>

It's apples to oranges. In the years I've pined after a pair, I've tried my fair share. Faux leather leggings are sleek, they're edgy, they're reflective in a similar obsidian-like way that real leather is - but they're far thinner, and undeniably a different-feeling material. While great for a night out where no one has a magnifying glass pressed against them, you'll probably pass them over for daytime or casual wear. If you're looking for a pair you can wear casually for both I'm-with-the-band nights out and cooler, laid-back dinner dates for years to come, I recommend springing for the real deal. </span></p></div><div ng-switch="buttonProp"><p>All in all, <a href="http://www.pntra.com/t/SENJTkpNR0dDR0lJTEhOQ0dHSkdGTg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DSTLD's Leather Leggings</a> were a diamond hidden in the piles and piles of trash on the internet for me. After years of searching I found high-end leather leggings that don't cost $900-in fact, they're a third of that price

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Often basics are the most difficult articles of clothing to buy. So a few months ago, when I needed all-season wardrobe staple&#xa0; -a white button-down&#xa0;-&#xa0;I prepared for battle.&#xa0;<p>Despite my less-than-optimistic&#xa0;expectations, I stumbled upon what I needed in an unexpected material: Tencel, a fiber made from&#xa0;cellulose found in wood pulp.</p><p><span><span>Created&#xa0;by Austrian textile giant </span><a href="http://www.lenzing-fibers.com/en/tencel/">Lenzing</a>,&#xa0;Tencel is actually a branded version of a similar fiber, lyocell. Think "Kleenex" versus "facial tissue." </span>Still considered a synthetic fiber, Tencel actually falls "<span style="font-weight: 400;">somewhere in the middle,"&#xa0;<span>Adheer Bahulkar, a partner global <keyword id="6354851" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Retail">retail</keyword> consulting firm, </span><a href="https://www.atkearney.com/">A.T. Kearney</a><span>, told Business Insider via email. It's harvested from all-natural materials&#xa0;and converted into fabric&#xa0;using a sophisticated nanotechnology process.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span><span>Despite Tencel appearing in&#xa0;</span><span>athletic wear,&#xa0;bedding,&#xa0;and even denim since the '90s,&#xa0;</span></span></span>I had never heard of it&#xa0;until a frenzied hunt for my shirt one day at&#xa0;Anthropologie. I saw the one&#xa0;below hanging on a rack close to the front of the store.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>The style was exactly what I wanted: flowy but in a menswear&#xa0;sort of way. I immediately checked the fabric content, as&#xa0;my mother had drilled into my head on our countless shopping trips. The tag read, "Tencel."&#xa0;</p><p>Tencel? I wracked my brain. What the hell was <em>Tencel?</em></p><p>I found a sales associate and asked about the fabric. She called it a "cotton alternative" and mentioned the benefits: softness, strength, and breathability. I wrote off her&#xa0;positive comments as a good sales pitch. For a nearly $100 shirt, I wanted more information, so I left the store, prepared to do a bit of research that night.</p><p>Hey, I'm a journalist, and I could always&#xa0;make a purchase tomorrow.</p><h3>The benefits</h3><p>I found internet folk reiterating the sales associates' words on message boards. Compared to cotton, people thought Tencel shrank less, wrinkled less, and breathed more. In the store, I noticed myself the fabric felt softer and stronger than most cotton.&#xa0;</p><p>When asked about the benefits of Tencel (lyocell), B<span style="font-weight: 400;">ahulkar&#xa0;rattled off a similar list.</span></p><p>"<span style="font-weight: 400;">Lyocell is composed of nanofibrils - literally very, very small fibers - which are hydrophilic - [have a] strong attraction to absorbing moisture," he wrote. "This gives Tencel unique moisture absorption ability, which in turn makes [it]&#xa0;breathable, softer, [and] less prone to wrinkles."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Because of these qualities, Tencel's marketing suggests it doesn't collect as much odor or bacteria as other fabrics&#xa0;and needs to be washed less. Whether these claims are true, however, remains unclear, according to&#xa0;<span>Bahulkar.</span></span></p><p>Aside from the aesthetic and textural benefits,&#xa0;marketing suggests Tencel is also more environmentally-friendly than other fabrics. It's produced on a "closed loop system," in which "<span style="font-weight: 400;">99% of the chemicals and solvents used in the process to break down the wood pulp are recovered and recycled with minimal waste and very low emissions,"&#xa0;<span>Bahulkar said. The process received the&#xa0;<span>European Award for the Environment from the European Union.&#xa0;</span></span></span></p><p>"<span style="font-weight: 400;">Tencel does use less land and water than cotton production,"&#xa0;<span>Edward Hertzman, the publisher of </span><a href="http://www.sourcingjournalonline.com">Sourcing Journal</a><span>, which focuses&#xa0;on the retail apparel and textile industry, told&#xa0;tell Business Insider.</span> In fact, a</span>ccording to&#xa0;<span>Bahulkar, c</span>otton, especially industrially farmed to satisfy global demand, uses up to 20 times more water.</p><p>Tencel is also made from eucalyptus trees, which don't require pesticides or irrigation, according to the <a href="http://www.nrdc.org/living/stuff/choosing-between-organic-and-cotton-tencel.asp">Natural Resource Defense Council</a>. Lenzing says it can grow enough trees for a ton of Tencel on half an acre of forestland, likely unsuitable for farming. Cotton needs up to five times as much of high quality farmland, according to the NRDC.</p><p><div></div></p><h3 class="embed-spacer">&#xa0;The downsides</h3><p>The organization, however, also notes that wood pulp is often sourced from forests underneath an umbrella environmental organization which doesn't hold cutters to very high standards. There's also little difference in sustainability between Tencel&#xa0;and organic cotton in the long run.&#xa0;</p><p><span><span>Bahulkar added&#xa0;i</span>t's "difficult to be definitive" when calling Tencel more sustainable than cotton, especially because Tencel production is "an extremely minuscule fraction" of cotton production today. And more research needs to be done through the conversion and dying processes. Despite the award-winning closed loop system, these steps can't avoid harsh chemicals&#xa0;</span></p><p>From a consumer's perspective, Tencel is also more expensive. Because of the technology required, it simply costs more to produce, which transfers to shoppers, leading to Tencel's perception as a luxury fiber.</p><p>"The reason I say it has a luxury perception is that [companies]&#xa0;spend a lot of money marketing that brand," Hertzman&#xa0;added.</p><p><span>In fact, Bahulkar says Tencel can carry as much as a 50-to-100% </span><span>premium</span><span>&#xa0;over Egyptian cotton, one of the most pricey levels of cotton.</span></p><h3><span>My find</span></h3><p>After researching, I&#xa0;decided I wanted to take a chance on Tencel - if I could find a cheaper version than Anthropologie offered. On a whim, I stopped at T.J. Maxx. After some heavy rack-scanning (because that's what you have to do), I saw a white button-up in my size and checked the tag - 100% Tencel. Score.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p><span>Apparently, finding a completely Tencel piece is&#xa0;rare&#xa0;</span><span>- "maybe in a woman's shirt, but it's going to be silky," Hertzman&#xa0;said.</span><span>&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>I tried on the shirt - silky it was. And w</span>hile I didn't recognize the brand, the price was significantly lower than Anthrpologie's version, yet the styles mirrored each other. I bought T.J.'s shirt&#xa0;for $29.99.&#xa0;</p><p>After a few months of wearing and washing it, I couldn't be happier with my purchase. It's more airy than a normal cotton button-up, and I've found I don't have to wash it as often. While I haven't seen&#xa0;much difference in wrinkling,&#xa0;just a Tide To Go Stain Pen erased&#xa0;a giant splotch of black subway gunk from the back and sleeve.</p><h3>The future</h3><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"There has been a tremendous growth in Tencel production and use in the market …. People are really into comfort now. They like softness and leisure trends," Hertzman said.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span>Markets other than&#xa0;apparel are noticing Tencel as well.
