Dharamsala: The fourth ODI between India and the West Indies on October 18 will be the <keyword id="98224" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Himachal-Pradesh-Cricket-Association">Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association</keyword> (HPCA) stadium's first ODI game in almost two years. As the panoramic venue gears up for just its second ever international match, preparations are in full swing to ensure that both players and the crowd have an experience worth remembering. Bringing international action to the hills was never an easy task, but due to the HPCA's constant efforts over the years, the state of <keyword id="6358126" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Himachal-Pradesh">Himachal Pradesh</keyword> today boasts a world-class cricket stadium. The board embarked upon a journey in the year 2000 and its the development - especially in terms of infrastructure has been immense. The growth of the association has picked up sharply since 2002, reaching almost 150 million by 2008 and a staggering 1000 millions at present.

	The reason behind the positive twist is mainly attributed to the untiring efforts being put in by the HPCA under the dynamic leadership of Anurag Thakur, who led the team from the front with full dedication and commitment which was duly complimented by the financial support in the shapes of subsidies by the BCCI.
 The foundation of the HPCA Stadium was laid by <keyword id="508455" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Himachal-Pradesh-Chief-Minister">Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister</keyword> Prem Kumar Dhumal in March 2002. It was a significant achievement for the HPCA not only because creating an international stadium in the hills was almost unthinkable, but also for playing a crucial role in the promotion of cricket in the state. Thanks to the BCCI's support, the stadium began getting its shape every passing year and in 2007, the construction was almost 75 percent complete.

	As the lush green ground matching international standards was ready for playing, the stadium even hosted some first-class matches and a prestigious three-day practice match between Pakistan and the Board President’s XI. In September 2007, the ICC inspected the stadium to include in into the list of venues for international matches, but unfortunately due to a few shortcomings related to a lack of proper hotel accommodation, the picturesque stadium had to wait for two more years before getting the clearance for ODI and Twenty20 matches.

	The ground is prepared with Bermuda and winter grass and comprises a field size of 80 yards from the centre of the square. The main square has six strips , out of which centre three has the TV camera facility. In addition, there exist two separate practice areas with eight strips for both teams. The stadium in not only furnished with modern amenities and state of art machinery, but also with proper international-quality equipment which include 11 rollers, and 4 Super Soppers.

	The stadium also gives clarion-call to the players and is very well connected with the main roads of the town. There are 13 stands and five main entries for 19,979 spectators. The stadium has two blocks, South Block (Pavillion End) and North Block (media centre). The South Block consists of magnificent dressing rooms, with luxurious facilities for players, match referee room, observer room, umpire Room, third umpire room, scorers’ room, video analyst room, corporate boxes and a VIP sitting area.
 The North Block nestles the media centre, <keyword id="55539" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="commentary">commentary</keyword> box, venue operation centre and the post-match conference area. The media centre has the capacity to accommodate nearly 150 people and by the look of it, the proceedings of the matches are clearly visible from there. There are appropriate and marked places to put cameras to cover the event live and particularly to keep a close vigil at all activities.

In her 20s, Sara Hoy made close friends in her Central Pennsylvania hometown through an organization called Third Place. The group, named after what sociologists call any social setting that's not home (the first place) or work (the second), was led by a local church leader and sought to help young professionals build community.In her 30s, Hoy joined the Peace Corps in Moldova, and then worked in Korea and Sweden. By the time she came home six years later, most of her Third Place friends had started families, and the sense of community had faded. So when she heard about Culdesac, a buzzy new $170 million car-free community opening up outside Phoenix, she applied to live there, even though she'd never been to Arizona. In May, Hoy became one of the first residents to move in.Now 40, Hoy lives alone in a studio apartment. She was prepared to feel what millions of Americans feel today: lonely. "I've been through that before living in other places and knowing what I needed to do is put myself out there, introduce myself to neighbors," she said. Culdesac's design, she says, has made that easier.The development is centered on shared spaces for its 1,000 residents: a plaza, a gym, a grocery store, a restaurant, a coffee shop, coworking space, and shaded courtyards. There's weekly bike karaoke along with art fairs and all sorts of other programming to get neighbors to meet up. Culdesac's founders were inspired by multigenerational Egyptian farming villages, Erin Boyd, the head of government and external affairs, told me. Walkable, tightly knit communities might be new to suburban Arizona, but they're "actually a very old way of living," she said.Culdesac, in short, is an experiment to save one of the most endangered aspects of American life: a place to hang out.Third spaces, which include bars, parks, coffee shops, libraries, and even sidewalks, have been in decline for decades. Racism, classism, <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/news/letter-from-the-southwest/texass-dying-swimming-holes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the climate crisis</a>, overpolicing, a car-based economy, and the privatization and rising costs of amenities have all narrowed access to them.We're also going to third places less often — working longer hours to compensate for wage stagnation and spending less time with one another. For decades, Americans reported spending about 6 ½ hours a week with friends. But from 2014 to 2019, it suddenly <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/11/23/americans-alone-thanksgiving-friends/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dropped by 37%</a>, to four hours a week. (2014, not coincidentally, was the year smartphone ownership in the US passed 50%.) Instead, we spend much more time online, alone. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/24/well/family/child-social-media-use.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Instagram</a>, Twitch, and <a href="https://www.fastcompany.com/90866142/have-podcasts-benefitted-from-the-decline-of-third-places" target="_blank" rel="noopener">podcasts</a> are the new, placeless third places. We can see this shift everywhere. The characters of the biggest shows of the '90s — "Friends," "Seinfeld," "Cheers" — spent the overwhelming majority of their time hanging out at the café, diner, and bar, and work was either an afterthought or a running joke. In today's biggest shows — "Succession," "Superstore," "Industry" — work is all-consuming, and life beyond it is an afterthought or, in the case of "Severance," wholly inaccessible.The dwindling of places to spend time together is a catastrophe for our communities and for us, exacerbating what US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy calls an <a href="https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">epidemic of loneliness</a>. One in five Americans reported feeling lonely or socially isolated often or all the time <a href="https://www.kff.org/report-section/loneliness-and-social-isolation-in-the-united-states-the-united-kingdom-and-japan-an-international-survey-introduction/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in 2018</a>. One study found the <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34898234/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rate of loneliness</a> among young adults rose almost every year between 1976 and 2019. In a <a href="https://today.yougov.com/topics/society/articles-reports/2019/07/30/loneliness-friendship-new-friends-poll-survey" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2019 YouGov poll</a>, 22% of millennials reported having no friends at all. And being lonely and spending a lot of time alone are associated with <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25910392/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bleak health outcomes</a>, including significantly raising the <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/1745691614568352" target="_blank" rel="noopener">risk of premature death</a>, especially from a <a href="https://heart.bmj.com/content/102/13/987" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stroke or coronary artery disease</a>.The good news is that more people are seeing loneliness, in part, as a design flaw in the built environment. Researchers, developers, the surgeon general, and elected officials alike are beginning to form a new kind of adage: If you build it, they will come together.<h2>3rd places at a price</h2>How did we get so scattered? Well, cars, for one. As American cities were reshaped around the car in the early 20th century, streets became a lot less welcoming. Cars also brought suburbia, sprawl, highways that slashed through neighborhoods, and an environment that made it easier to isolate yourself in a private vehicle than walk, bike, or take mass transit.Racial and class segregation have also long shaped and limited access to public places. In New York, the predominantly Black residents of Seneca Village <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/uncovering-the-history-of-seneca-village-in-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">were forcibly displaced</a> to clear the way for the creation of Central Park in the mid-1800s. In Washington, DC, exclusive zoning around <a href="https://www.npr.org/local/305/2021/03/29/982264483/melvin-hazen-s-legacy-segregation-displacement-and-a-d-c-park" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rock Creek Park</a> further separated the city's Black and white residents. In Los Angeles, three Mexican American neighborhoods were <a href="https://www.vox.com/videos/2021/5/17/22439387/dodger-stadium-chavez-ravine-history" target="_blank" rel="noopener">destroyed to make way for Dodger Stadium</a> in the 1950s.Sen. Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, places some of the blame on the government's decadeslong disinvestment in America's downtowns. "Downtowns were a real place where people connected," he told me. "My sense of identity was very much connected to the localness and to the local identity of the place that I grew up in," which was Wethersfield, Connecticut. Now Murphy thinks both local governments and the federal government should help revitalize downtowns, because "it was government's decision to support unrestrained globalization and online commerce that emptied" them out. The recent rise of remote work has only worsened the problem, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/midwest-america-cities-downtown-crisis-office-apocalypse-urban-doom-loop-2023-6">further emptying downtowns</a> as businesses abandon offices <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/07/13/investing/remote-work-impact-real-estate/index.html#:~:text=Remote%20work%20risks%20wiping%20%24800,according%20to%20a%20new%20report." target="_blank" rel="noopener">in droves</a>.Sen. Tina Smith, a Minnesota Democrat, told me the "privatizing of space" — or when businesses become the only (and cost-prohibitive) third places — also has a lot to do with both rising isolation and income inequality."If you look at most major American cities, you see pretty extreme segregation between wealthy communities and poor communities," Smith said. "Wealthy people live in places where they can have big gated houses and their own swimming pool and their own private park." Meanwhile, lower-income and "even middle-class families find themselves living in places where there aren't enough trees, there aren't enough public spaces," she added, "whether it be the local swimming pool or the local park."When wealthier folks move into lower-income neighborhoods, that gentrification also attracts pricier retail, restaurants, and other amenities that many longtime residents can't afford or don't feel comfortable using. Sweetgreen, Soho House, and SoulCycle are third places only to some. As Leslie Kern, an urban scholar and author, put it, "If your greasy spoon isn't there anymore and now it's a $5 or $6 cup of coffee, instead of a $1 or $2 cup with free refills all day, that's a big barrier." Community-oriented developments like Culdesac, which will offer only market-rate apartments, are also exclusive.For a time, malls and their food courts served as relatively effective third spaces, says Kern. Though they were privately owned bastions of commercialism, all kinds of people could hang out in them, without needing to spend money. They had heating, air conditioning, and bathrooms. But Hot Topic is no longer a hot topic — as the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retail-apocalypse-last-decade-timeline-2019-12">retail apocalypse</a> continues, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retail-apocalypse-helped-spark-a-rapid-descent-into-dystopia-2021-3">malls</a> have been dying in droves.For the few free-to-affordable third places that remain, says Kern, "there's a lot of pressure" on them "to address, in some way, a lot of challenging social and economic problems." The result: Café workers are fired for feeding <a href="https://www.portlandmercury.com/food-and-drink/2019/10/02/27244631/caffe-vita-employees-say-theyre-getting-fired-for-feeding-old-pastries-to-homeless-people" target="_blank" rel="noopener">homeless people</a>, <a href="https://6abc.com/chick-fil-a-royersford-unsupervised-teen-ban-montgomery-county-anyone-under-the-age-of-16-is-required-to-be-accompanied-by-an-adult-buckwalter-road/12887314/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">teens are barred from Chick-fil-A</a>, and older people are <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/15/nyregion/fighting-a-mcdonalds-for-the-right-to-sit-and-sit-and-sit.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">limited to 20 minutes at a McDonald's</a> table.There might be less pressure on private spaces, experts say, if there were attractive and accessible parks, community centers, and other public places.<h2>Building for social connection</h2>"Does the government have a role to play in making sure that every small town has a pub or a local restaurant?" Murphy says. "Maybe not. But we should at least be exploring those questions."In July, Murphy <a href="https://www.murphy.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/murphy-introduces-legislation-to-establish-national-strategy-to-combat-loneliness-promote-social-connection" target="_blank" rel="noopener">introduced legislation</a> to form a national strategy to combat loneliness. The bill would create an Office of Social Connection Policy to advise the president and federal agencies on boosting social infrastructure and developing national guidelines for preventing loneliness, and send $5 million a year for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to research the prevalence of loneliness.Murphy also wants to see funds from the 2021 infrastructure bill support more vibrant downtowns and concentrated development, rather than sprawl. And he wants to use tax policy "to help the bottom lines of small retailers, instead of padding the pockets of the big quasi-monopolistic retailers."Urban planners have also gained a lot of knowledge about the types of places that foster social connection, and the types that don't. "What we call parks look like parking lots with some grass on them, perhaps a baseball diamond. That's not the kind of park that draws people in," Tayana Panova, a researcher who studies the built environment's effects on mental health, told me. "We need parks that have amenities and assets that make it desirable for people to go there." A third space of dreams isn't a barren field. It also includes pools, benches, art, fountains, playgrounds, and food stands — things people gather at. As the climate warms, shade and water are increasingly necessary in outdoor spaces. Culdesac, situated just outside the <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2023/08/phoenix-record-excessive-heat-wave-streak/674924/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hottest major city</a> in America, won't have any asphalt and is maximizing shade to cool the neighborhood.The more things to do, the more people come, the more comfortable people are, the more they interact. Mitchell Reardon, the director of urban planning at the Canadian design firm Happy Cities, pointed to <a href="https://admin.happycities.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Editable-Urbanism-Report-1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a 2014 study</a> his firm did in Seattle called "the lost-tourist experiment." An actor pretended to be lost on two different street corners, one beside a long blank wall and nothing else, and one next to a bunch of shops and cafés. The "tourist" did their best to look confused and waited for a stranger to volunteer to help them get oriented. On the street with shops, people were four times as likely to stop and offer help than on the street with the wall. One person on the bustling corner even asked the tourist on a date."It's really important for people to have space to have a spectrum of participation, to kind of passively observe, actively observe, dip your toes in actually getting involved, and then being fully involved," Reardon said. "The fundamental rule of public space is that what attracts people most is other people."Urban designers have also found that communities need to be part of the process of designing their shared spaces to ensure they're used. Smith told me she recently visited a new community space in Rochester, Minnesota, where a group of immigrant women had been deeply engaged in designing the place. "When they were celebrating Eid, they wanted to celebrate it in one of these public spaces because they had been in on it from the beginning," she said.Another surefire way to get more Americans to hang out: Legalize public drinking.As Kristen Ghodsee, an ethnographer who's a professor of Russian and East European Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, noted, public drinking is widespread and celebrated throughout Europe. In Germany, they have a term for the beer you drink as you walk to the next bar, a "wegbier." The US already has regulations around unruly or antisocial behavior that could result from public drinking, Reardon, another proponent of legalized public drinking, said. So it's counterproductive to stop responsible drinkers from enjoying themselves in parks, at street fairs, and in other public places.People also might go to more places if they had more places to go — public bathrooms. "The key to harmonious living among many people that are not related is lots of toilets," Ghodsee said. "And they knew that in the ninth century," pointing to an architectural drawing from AD 820 of the <a href="https://www.medievalists.net/2022/01/st-gall-plan-medieval-monasteries/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ideal Benedictine monastery</a> that was full of toilets.The US, however, has largely neglected this most basic amenity. There are an average of <a href="https://www.qssupplies.co.uk/the-public-toilet-index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">eight public toilets for every 100,000 people</a> in the US, but access to facilities varies widely. New York City has fewer than 1,200 public toilets for its 8.5 million residents. It's a dire situation, and a group of city-council members <a href="https://hellgatenyc.com/city-council-nyc-public-bathroom-network" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recently introduced a bill</a> to build another 3,100 toilets in the next 12 years. By contrast, countries like the UK and Switzerland have many more public toilets per capita. Some even double as <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/3v5k0g/2_way_mirror_public_bathroom_in_switzerland/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">public art</a>.People are also willing to pay a premium to live in walkable neighborhoods with lots of third places. Homebuyers <a href="https://smartgrowthamerica.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Foot-Traffic-Ahead-2023.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in the biggest US cities</a> pay 35% more to live in walkable areas and renters pay 41% more. An overwhelming majority of people say they want to live within an easy walk of amenities like <a href="https://www.nar.realtor/newsroom/new-nar-survey-finds-americans-prefer-walkable-communities" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shops and parks and near public transit</a>, a recent survey by the National Association of Realtors found.Some developers, Culdesac included, are also responding to these demands and building their own 15-minute cities. In Houston, the developer <a href="https://www.conceptneighborhood.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Concept Neighborhood</a> is building a $350 million walkable community with 1,000 homes "around lifestyle-enhancing public infrastructure including transit, trails, bike lanes and parks," according to its website. Another developer is <a href="https://brodieoaksredevelopment.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">transforming</a> a former strip mall in Austin into a car-light, mixed-use development adjacent to <a href="https://www.statesman.com/story/news/2023/05/23/austin-project-connect-light-rail-plan-unveiled-cost-construction/70245670007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a new light rail</a>.There are all kinds of ways to combat loneliness, from individual lifestyle changes to national public investments. The surgeon general has called for a multipronged approach, including investing in paid family leave and accessible mass transit; training healthcare providers to address social disconnection among patients; and reforming digital safety rules. The first pillar of his approach, though, is bringing people together through social infrastructure. Fundamentally, society needs places where people aren't alone.

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 22 () Expatriates from Keralasettled in various countries, especially the Gulf, shouldcarry mandatorily a COVID-19 negative certificate if they wantto return home once the Centre gives it's nod for bringingthem back, the state government has said.Keen to avoid fresh overseas cases after successfullycontaining coronavirus spread in the state, the government hasissued an order stating that expats who possess certificatesshowing that they tested negative for coronavirus can registerwith NORKA (Non-Resident Keralites Affairs) department. "We will allow only those people who carry the COVIDnegative certificate (to travel to the state). Only afterwhich they can register with NORKA", state Home Secretary DrVishwas Mehta told in an interview.After the Non-Resident Keralites register themselves, thegovernment would draw up a list on how to bring them back asper priority, he said.The order, issued late on Tuesday, specifically mentionsthat the registration is for arranging quarantine facilitiesin the state for the NRKs, if necessary, and not for gettingany priority in flight bookings.As per the guidelines prepared by state government forthe return of NRKs, they will have to get themselves testedfrom the country where they are before emplaning for Keralaand should also be having COVID-19 negative certificates. Mehta, who is also the Additional Chief Secretary, saidthe government has drawn up a strategy to accommodate up to 10lakh symptomatic people, including NRKs, for the purpose ofquarantine if there was a huge surge. "Our strategy is NRKs should get themselves tested andcome to the state with a COVID-19 negative certificate. Oncethey reach the state, they will be tested at the airports. Ifthey are found symptomatic, they would be shifted to COVIDcare centres. Those without any symptoms will be sent home,but they will be under observation for 14 days", he said.According to official estimates, there are least 33 lakhNRKs who are residing in various countries, including 22 lakhin the Gulf region, and the government is expecting aroundthree to 5.5 lakh of them to come back within 30 days oncethe flight services are resumed.There has been a huge demand from the Non ResidentKeralites, settled in various parts of the globe, especiallythe Gulf, where lakhs of people from the state are employed,to return to the state due to the COVID-19 situation.Those with expired visas, the elderly, pregnant women,children, critically ill patients, students who have completedtheir courses, and others are among the large number of peoplewho are waiting to come back.The government is expecting a huge influx of NRKs andalso Malayalees from other states in the country to returnonce the lockdown, in force till May 3 now, is lifted and airservices resume.Kerala was the first state in the country to reportCOVID-19 cases when three students from Wuhan in China testedpositive on their return home early this year.The state did well in not only ensuring their recoverybut also in containing the spread of the virus after morepeople who returned from affected countries like Italy andGulf region before the lockdown testing positive for thedeadly infection.The treatment model adopted by Kerala has won globalappreciation with some foreigners, who were treated here,saying the state was more safe.Of the total 426 cumulative cases, there were only 117active COVID-19 patients now under treatment with as many as307 people having been discharged as of Tuesday. "Around 27,000 institutions, including hotels, resorts,hostels, schools, lodges, stadiums and even auditoriums havebeen identified where we can accommodate around 10 lakhpeople, including NRKs. Space has been found. Stadiums andauditoriums will be used as a last resort," he said. However, what is likely to give the government nightmaresis keeping track of everyone reaching the state when inter-state train and bus services are resumed after lockdown. "For such people coming into the state in buses and trainsonly thermal screening can be done to a certain extent. Wewill have to draw up a strategy for them," the Home Secretarysaid.Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has already written toPrime Minister Narendra Modi to show 'special consideration"and arrange special flights to the Gulf for airlifting NRKsstranded there due to the lockdown.The Centre has informed the Supreme Court and other highcourts that as of now it has no plans to carry out evacuationof Indians stranded in different countries due to lockdownTalking about hospital capacity, Mehta said about 1.4lakh beds have been identified in government and privatehealthcare facilitates in the state. <ul><li>The use of technology has hit the roof as most people turn to digital services to meet their day-to-day requirements amid the coronavirus pandemic.</li><li>NASSCOM President Debjani Ghosh believes that the lockdown has people — consumers and business owners alike — saying, “technology bacha le (save us)”.</li><li>However, the uptake of technology has also highlighted the digital divide that exists in our society. </li><li>Most of the services available online can only be accessed using smartphones, and people need to speak English or be literate in order to use them effectively.</li></ul>Digital technology has been a saviour for many during the coronavirus pandemic and its accompanying lockdown in India. “They’re saying technology bacha le (save us),” NASSCOM President Debjani Ghosh said during the Big Reset panel with Business Insider India in collaboration with the Observer Research Foundation (ORF). Technology may certainly have been a boon for the 4.35 million people employed in the IT industry, it’s not the same story across the board. The massive young population of job seekers is not the only problem “I have always said that Indians take to technology like fish take to water,” said Ghosh during the panel discussion. But even having access to these facilities is limited to less than half of the Indian population. In the first half of the 20th century, when big bouts resonated far beyond the ring and Jews had a much more tenuous position in American life, quite a few found glory in the ring. In 1933, Max Baer wore Star of David trunks when he defeated Hitler's favorite fighter and former heavyweight champion, Max Schmelling, at Yankee Stadium. (Baer's victory led to an affair with Greta Garbo. Schmelling later defeated Joe Louis and then lost to him in a 1938 title fight dubbed the "battle of the century.") One of the most celebrated Jewish fighters was Barney Ross, a tough Chicago kid, the son of a murdered rabbi, who held world championships in three weight classes, including welterweight. Later, Ross enlisted in the Marines and earned a Silver Star for valor <keyword id="31408" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="fighting">fighting</keyword> Japanese soldiers at Guadalcanal. While recovering from his wounds, Ross became addicted to morphine. There's a 1957 movie about him called "<a href="https://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/5506/monkey-on-my-back#overview">Monkey on My Back</a>."Ogens' film juxtaposes Wohlman wrapping his hands for the ring with wrapping tefillin. With the phylacteries, a rabbi tells him, "Your arms become instruments not of destruction but of God." Wohlman shadow boxes across the old city of Jerusalem, a Rocky sequel that never got made. A more memorable sequence, to my mind a more Jewish one, comes in the first episode of the docu-series "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgyf9REce6A">Why We Fight</a>." Wohlman travels to Tijuana, for an easy fight to juice his won/loss record and with that his prospects for a higher profile bout back home. Wohlman scores a first round TKO against a tomato can named Roman Mendez. After the fight, he visits Mendez' barrio to meet the boxer's family and see the pig Mendez buys with his prize money. Wohlman meets another fighter, a candy hawker by day, and encourages him to train harder, and to be faithful to his wife.<div type="image" title="Two men wearing grey suits stand side by side, as one pumps his fist" height="4015" width="3267" msid="84100012" hostid="261"></div>A later episode distills the grim economics of bloodsport even more starkly. In Cambodia, Wohlman meets a 10-year old prize-fighter and his trainer/promoter, the self-described "Don King of Cambodia," who both cares for and profits from pre-pubescent fighters. "I want [the 10-year old] to be wealthy and whatever his version of successful is," Wohlman said. "But I don't think what I hope he'll become and the reality will meet." Wohlman didn't just perform concern on camera. For the last two years of his life, he directed <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CLSxnjTMObk/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loadingding">Ring of Hope</a>, a <keyword id="6362171" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Boxing">boxing</keyword> program for at-risk kids in Dallas. He'd hoped to open a branch in L.A., hinting at a life he could have led once his dreams of glory subsided. Instead the people who loved him gathered on the beach to say goodbye. After the tributes, the singing and the crying, two guys in wetsuits bore the wreath out to sea. As the waves enveloped it, the crowd applauded.<h2>"High-speed miserable chess"</h2>I first heard of Wohlmann a few years ago from my friend Vanessa Adriance, a corporate litigator who became one of his closest friends. A serious amateur jock, Adriance had been cardio boxing for a couple years at an L.A. gym when he showed up.Wohlman introduced himself as an acolyte of Freddie Roach, a legendary Hall of Fame trainer whose gym, Wild Card Boxing, is on the second floor of a Hollywood strip mall. Wohlman began to teach real boxing, how to throw a punch, how to dodge one, not anything Adriance had to worry about when she was just getting sweaty whaling on a bag.Adriance found Wohlman "magnetic" and, with her marriage falling apart, she was open to new experiences. She and another woman decided they wanted to box each other. Wohlman wasn't interested in supervising them, but he offered to spar with Adriance. He wouldn't knock her out, but he'd punch her and she could punch back. Adriance started going to every class he taught, pestering him for months until he told her to get a mouth guard at the <keyword id="6356028" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sports">Sports</keyword> Authority. He found some dusty headgear lying around the gym and rubbed her face with vaseline - "greased" her - to reduce the damage from his punches.<div type="image" title="Two people wearing casual exercise clothing are seen sparring in a boxing ring." height="810" width="1080" msid="84100013" hostid="261"></div>"It doesn't feel good to get punched of course," Adriance said of that first day of sparring but the pain didn't overwhelm her. "What I remember is being disoriented." It felt like she was underwater and didn't know which way was up. For some people, Wohlman said, throwing the first punch is harder. Not for my friend. "I don't know what that says about me," she said. She thinks she landed a sloppy jab or two.She also found it intellectually engaging, like "high-speed miserable chess," litigation in the raw. As she describes it, Wohlman indulged her, like a father driving with a toddler on his lap. But she refused to let go of the wheel. After three rounds she felt overwhelmed by the adrenaline rush, "Something about hard sparring cleanses your brain," she said "It will rinse you clean or it will break you emotionally, whatever dam is holding it together." As she got to know Wohlman, she learned his story. (Wohlman's widow didn't respond to interview requests for this story.) His mother, he has said in <a href="https://vimeo.com/188035088">interviews</a>, changed the locks on him when he was 15 and he went to live with his father. They committed crimes and did meth together, he has said, until a police raid one morning. Wohlmann flushed money and drugs down the toilet and the cops told him his father was going to prison. When Wohlman got fired from the gym, she followed him to the hallowed and intimidating confines of Wild Card. She felt the pull of the gym's "weird, fast intimacy." People whose names she didn't know would wipe up her blood or reach into her mouth to pull out her guard. It seems she's spoken about little else since.Wohlman won the Los Angeles Golden Gloves in 2010 and then went pro, stringing together a professional record of 10-3-2 according to the site BoxRec. No brawler, he had an old-school fighting style and cared about technique. "He was a lot tougher and meaner and angrier than his boxing style almost allowed him to be," Javier Calderon, a longtime sparring partner said. "He was willing to take a shot to give a shot."Calderon, who describes himself as "a gainfully unemployed artist," sparred with and mentored Wohlman for about 12 years. "I beat his ass until he got better." Wohlman lacked a "concussive" punch but he was accurate. Calderon thinks Wohlman may have been responsible for tearing his retina, an injury that needed surgery. "His jab was working beautifully and digging into my eyeballs"<div type="image" title="A man is seen listing his shirt to reveal his chest tattoos" height="3000" width="2209" msid="84100015" hostid="261"></div>"One of his love languages was sparring," said Eli Cobillas, who knew Wohlman in Dallas. He had a "slick, crafty" style and liked to put on soul or jazz before he started punching. Eric Brown, a celebrated trainer who named Wohlman Kid Yamaka, said Wohlman liked to humiliate his opponents by standing right in front of them while somehow remaining untouchable. Calderon is a tee-totaller who says he was never around Wohlman when he was high. Rather he emphasized Wohlman's drive to improve himself. "I knew that even when things were going good, it's a balancing act, a tightrope walk," Calderon said. "There were times when he faltered and faltered hard." In December Wohlman came back to California and went to a rehab facility in the desert east of LA. It was the first time he was really sober since he was 19, he told Adriance, our mutual friend. In rehab he learned to play chess, which reminded him of slow-motion boxing. On January 29 he <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CKp5bwVA00s/">posted</a> a picture of a 60-days sober key chain on Instagram. Adriance last spoke to Wohlman two weeks later, on the Friday before Valentine's Day. He said he was coming out of a meeting with someone he'd met in rehab. He died the next day. His body turned up at a gas station bathroom.
