Louisiana State Police: Police officer shot in southwestern Louisiana

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Sydney (AFP) - Australian surgeons said Friday they have used hearts that had stopped beating in successful transplants, in a world first that could change the way organs are donated.
Until now, doctors have relied on using the still-beating hearts of donors who have been declared brain dead, often placing the recovered organs on ice and rushing them to their recipients.
But Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital and the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute have developed a technique which means hearts which had been still for 20 minutes can be resuscitated and transplanted into a patient.
So far three people have received hearts in this way, with two recovering well and the third and most recent recipient still requiring intensive care.
"They are the only three in the world," surgeon Kumud Dhital, who is an associate professor at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, told AFP.
"We know that within a certain period of time the heart, like other organs, can be reanimated, restarted, and only now have we been able to do it in a fashion whereby a heart that has stopped somewhere can be retrieved by the transplant team, put on the machine... and then (surgeons can) transplant it."
The technique involves donor hearts being transferred to a portable machine known as a "heart in a box" in which they were placed in a preservation solution, resuscitated and kept warm.
Professor Peter MacDonald, medical director of the St Vincent's Heart Transplant Unit, said the use of hearts "donated after circulatory death" would make far more available for transplant.
"This breakthrough represents a major inroad to reducing the shortage of donor organs," he said.
Michelle Gribilas, the first patient to receive one of the three hearts, said she was very sick before her operation.
"Now I'm a different person altogether," the 57-year-old said. "I feel like I'm 40 years old. I'm very lucky."
The second recipient, Jan Damen, who had the surgery about two weeks ago, said he felt "amazing".
"I'm not religious or spiritual but it's a wild thing to get your head around," he said.
Dhital said reanimating hearts using the machine could increase safety for patients because it gave surgeons confidence that the organ was functioning.
"I would suggest that in the next five years or so we will be shifting more and more towards machine preservation of hearts," he said.

No one's been clear about that, but we got a clue about it on Wednesday.<h2>Spend money to make money</h2>Ideally, patient assistance programs are exactly what they sound like they are - funds that help make medication more affordable to patients.However, the government is concerned that at Valeant they have taken on a more sinister role. "What is the return on investment to Valeant on the money you're currently putting into the patient-assistance programs?"Outgoing CEO Michael Pearson, present at the hearing, said he didn't know. "Don't tell me you've never done the analysis," Warren said in response. "By doing this you ... keep the patient on the more expensive drug and then you ... recoup whatever from the insurance company. What I'm saying is that this must be a profitable ... for you ... You're making more money."But Pearson stuck to his line, praising the programs for the good they do for Valeant's customers, but it was hard. It is also important to note that eligibility for our in-house commercial access programs is limited to patients not covered by government programs. The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a federal agency based in Bethesda, Md., takes the <a href="http://www.aarp.org/work/on-the-job/info-06-2013/aarp-best-employers-winners-2013.html">top spot in a list of the </a><a href="http://www.aarp.org/work/on-the-job/info-06-2013/aarp-best-employers-winners-2013.html">best 50 employers</a> for older workers published on Monday by the American Association of Retired Persons (<keyword id="244558" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="AARP">AARP</keyword>) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).
Jean Setzfand, AARP’s Vice President for Financial Security, says that employers should take advantage of <keyword id="98642" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Boomers">Boomers</keyword>' positive working traits, such as loyalty, by offering programs that will attract and retain them.
At NIH, workers are offered flexible telecommuting programs, a "Fit Plus Program," which is a health initiative aimed at older workers and two phased-retirement programs, which allow workers to choose to gradually transition to retirement by reducing hours or a trial-retirement program that allows retirees to return to work within one year of retiring in case they decide they aren't ready to leave the workforce.
“My boss lets me telework one week a month from my home,” 63-year-old Philip Lenowitz, deputy director in the office of human resources at the National Institutes of Health, tells <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-50-best-employers-for-boomer-workers-2013-06-17">Andrea Coombes at MarketWatch</a>. "That’s one of the things that keeps me here rather than retiring."

Nearly half (47%) of NIH workers are older than the age of 50.
All of the companies in the top five spots are health-related organizations: Atlantic Health System of Morristown, New Jersey; the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, and Mercy Health System of Janesville, WI.
A full 41% of this year's top employers for Boomers are hospitals, health insurers or medical research organizations.
“By the nature of their operations, hospitals and some other health care providers operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so it is a business necessity for them to offer flexible and compressed work schedules to their prospective and current employees," Setzfand says.
"These practices are appealing to older workers, and other industries should consider adopting them on a more widespread basis."
Any company based in the U.S. with at least 50 employees is eligible to apply for a spot on the list, which evaluates areas incluing recruiting practices; opportunities for training, education and career development; workplace accommodations; alternative work options, such as flexible scheduling, job sharing and phased retirement; employee health and retirement benefits, and retiree work opportunities.
