<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="14384444" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="srilankan-airlines" source="Orion">SriLankan Airlines</keyword> may cancel a host of <keyword id="6367662" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="flights" source="Orion">flights</keyword> this month, the Sri Lankan Daily Mirror reported.</li><li>The country ran out of jet fuel last week, per the outlet.</li></ul><p>SriLankan <keyword id="11898285" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="airlines" source="Orion">Airlines</keyword> is preparing to cancel a host of flights after fuel supplies ran out due to the country's economic crisis, the <a href="https://www.dailymirror.lk/business-news/SriLankan-braces-for-potential-flight-cancellations-amid-jet-fuel-shortage/273-240269">Sri Lankan Daily Mirror reported.</a></p><p>The airline announced that flights would likely be disrupted until July 18 after it ran out of jet fuel last week, the outlet reported, citing an internal company memo.</p><p>Energy minister Kanchana Wijesekera said on Sunday that Sri Lanka had <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/bankrupt-sri-lanka-seeks-cheap-russia-oil-economic-crisis-2022-7">less than a day's worth of fuel left</a>, while prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe declared the country "bankrupt" on Tuesday. </p><p>Sri Lankans have been queueing for gas for days and the government has encouraged working from home to save fuel, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sri-lanka-says-bankrupt-financial-crisis-ravages-country-debts-default-2022-7?r=US&amp;IR=T">Insider has previously reported. </a></p><p>The airline is now making alternative arrangements to keep some routes open, including stopping for fuel at airports in southern India airports, the Daily Mirror reported.</p><p>The airline also plans to bring in jet fuel on a dedicated plane from India, the newspaper added.</p><p>Sri Lanka's foreign currency reserves have been exhausted after it defaulted on its debts for the first time in May. </p><p>That meant the state-owned oil and gas company was unable to import more fuel and prompted the Civil <keyword id="12018329" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="aviation" source="Orion">Aviation</keyword> Authority to tell airlines to carry enough fuel for their return journeys, per the Daily Mirror.</p><p>SriLankan Airlines – a member of the OneWorld alliance – did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.</p><p>Warnings of cancellations come amid ongoing flight disruption as airlines struggle to recruit enough staff to meet surging demand for travel.</p><p>Thousands of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/more-than-1000-flights-canceled-across-fourth-of-july-weekend-2022-7">flights were canceled</a> over the Fourth of July weekend in the US.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pilot-strike-forces-scandinavian-airlines-to-cancel-half-its-flights-2022-7?r=US&amp;IR=T">Scandinavian Airlines</a> was forced to cancel hundreds of flights on Monday after pilots went on strike and it has now filed for bankruptcy protection.</p><p>Meanwhile, British Airways cancelled <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/jul/05/ba-cancels-flights-summer-heathrow-gatwick-holiday-malaga-palma-faro">1,000 more flights</a> for the summer period on Tuesday.</p><p>Heathrow, the UK's largest airport, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/heathrow-airport-cancels-flights-airlines-too-many-passengers-2022-6?r=US&amp;IR=T">asked airlines to cut flights on Thursday</a> amid fears it did not have the capacity to handle surging passenger numbers. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/british-airways-wait-days-bags-heathrow-luggage-mountain-2022-7?r=US&amp;IR=T">Piles of suitcases </a>mounted at the airport in the wake of cancellations.</p>

Each of America's three largest international airlines belongs to an airline alliance but the Oneworld alliance is now the only one to include two American carriers: American and Alaska.</p><p>By partnering, alliances can also offer flyers greater conveniences when <keyword id="52392" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Flying">flying</keyword> on member carriers like complementary route networks and single-ticket itineraries across multiple airlines. Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean? American Airlines will be helpful there. Africa and the Middle East? Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian, and Royal Air Maroc have a strong network there. Asia? Cathay Pacific Airways and SirLankan Airlines are good bets. Russia? S7 Airlines can help with internal flights. </p><p>A flyer wanting to go from Portland, Oregon to Doha, Qatar can book a single-ticket itinerary through Alaska that includes flights on Alaska and Qatar Airways. Amman, Jordan is an easy Alaska flight to New York to meet the non-stop Royal Jordanian flight.</p><p>Single-ticket itineraries also mean baggage is automatically brought to the next flight, even if on a different airline, and fees are only paid once. </p><h2>More upgrades for frequent flyers</h2><div type="image" title="American Airlines business class" height="1665" width="2220" msid="82481186" hostid="261"></div><p>Alaska flyers with MVP 75K status only are eligible for complimentary upgrades on American when flying domestically or between the US, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America. Later this year, those status holders will also be given certificates to upgrade on American's international flights. </p><p>All Alaska elite status holders, regardless of rank, will be allowed to select American's "Main Cabin Extra" seats, if available, for no extra charge. MVP status holders can do so 24 hours in advance while higher ranks can do so at booking. </p><p>American flyers with Executive Platinum status only are eligible for complimentary upgrades on Alaska and will be automatically placed on the upgrade list. The only exception is when Executive Platinum holders book "saver" fares on Alaska, the equivalent of basic economy. </p><p>All Alaska elite status holders, regardless of rank, will be allowed to select Alaska's "premium cabin" seats, if available, for no extra charge. Gold status holders with certain ticket types can choose the seats 48 hours from departure while higher ranks can do so sooner.  </p><p>Upgrades on either airline are not guaranteed but are a huge incentive to keep booking higher-priced fares on each airline. </p><h2>More perks on the ground</h2><div type="image" title="American Airlines JFK Airport Lounge" height="1477" width="1970" msid="82481189" hostid="261"></div><p>Becoming an elite status holder on Alaska also makes you an elite status holder in Oneworld, and that means more perks when traveling across the alliance's network even if not on Alaska.</p><p>An Alaska MVP status holder is automatically given Oneworld Ruby status which includes access to business class check-in lines, preferred and pre-reserved seating, and priority on waitlists and standby lists. MVP Gold status holders on Alaska are Oneworld Sapphire, meaning they get all the Ruby perks and more including access to business class lounges, priority boarding, extra baggage allowance, and priority baggage handling. </p><p>An Alaska MVP 75K status holder is given Oneworld Emerald status, which includes Ruby and Sapphire perks plus access to first class lounges, first class check-in lanes, and priority security lanes. </p><p>Alaska's airline lounges are also available for certain Oneworld elites to use, including the new flagship Alaska Lounge in Seattle featuring a self-serve pancake maker. </p>

However, the bag began to emit smoke at an even higher rate, at which point, the crew kicked enacted their lithium fire procedures and immersed the bag in water.</p><p>Once the fire had been extinguished, flight attendants discovered a lithium battery pack along with two cellular phones inside the bag. </p><p>Fortunately, neither the crew nor the 202 passengers on board the flight were injured and the jet was able to land safely at its destination where it was met by "dangerous goods experts" and fire officials.</p><p>The airline, as well as Sri Lankan authorities, have launched an investigation into the incident.</p><p>In May, a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jetblue-flight-emergency-landing-lithium-fire-danger-laptop-ban-2017-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">JetBlue Airbus A321 traveling from New York to San Francisco</a> was forced to make an emergency landing in Michigan after another lithium battery pack caught fire in an overhead bin. Again, the aircraft was able to land safely after cabin crew extinguished the fire in flight. Sri Lanka has already made purchases of Russian oil.</p><p>Protesters gathered near the parliament building in the capital, Colombo, on Wednesday calling on Rajapaksa to resign.
