Putin wants to lure vaccine tourists to Russia so foreigners can get the Sputnik V COVID-19 jab

<ul><li>Russia has signed up with four large manufacturers in India to produce 300 million doses of the <keyword id="9739267" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sputnik-V">Sputnik V</keyword> vaccine in 2021.</li><li>This triples the amount of the vaccine that Russia has initially contracted to be manufactured in India. </li><li>According to the Russian Embassy, the first samples of the COVID-19 vaccine produced in India are already being tested by the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF).</li></ul>Russia has signed on four large manufacturers to produce a whopping 300 million doses of the Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine in India. This is a three-fold increase in the manufacturing of Sputnik V doses from before. "In India, we have agreements with four large manufacturers. ... India will produce about 300 mln doses or more of the vaccine for us next year," said Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) chief <a href="https://tass.com/world/1236777/amp">Kirill Dmitriev</a>. One of the manufacturers is Hetero Biopharma, which <a href="https://www.livemint.com/news/india/hetero-drugs-to-produce-over-100-million-doses-year-of-sputnik-v-vaccine-11606459369285.html">announced</a> its deal with the RDIF to make more than 100 million doses of the vaccine in November, earlier this year. Dmitriev did not disclose who the three new vendors are. It’s possible that Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories may be roped in since it is already conducting the clinical trials of Sputnik V in India and will also distribute doses, once approval comes in from the DCGA. So far, only three COVID-19 vaccines from Oxford-AstraZeneca, Pfizer-BioNTech and homegrown pharmaceutical company Bharat Biotech, have sought approval for emergency use in the coming weeks. Sputnik V may not be in the running but according to the <a href="https://twitter.com/RusEmbIndia/status/1339813294647902208">Russian Embassy</a>, testing of the first samples of the vaccine that were produced in India is already underway. In trials done outside the country, the Russian vaccine has been found to be more than 91% effective. Like Oxford-AstraZeneca, Stupink V can survive at refrigerated temperatures of between two to five degrees Celsius, which gives it an edge over its competitors. India will produce 300 million doses of the Russian Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine next year

The clarification by the minister has come after a pharmaceutical giant, which partnered with Russia's sovereign wealth fund in September to conduct final trials and distribution of the Sputnik V, sought permission for the same from <keyword id="682334" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Drugs-Controller-General-of-India">Drugs Controller General of India</keyword> (DCGI) on Friday. Hyderabad-based drugmaker Dr Reddy's Laboratories (DRL) had partnered the <keyword id="1397612" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russian-Direct-Investment-Fund">Russian Direct Investment Fund</keyword> (RDIF) last month to conduct final-stage human trials and distribution of Russia's Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine in India. Two days ago, the DRL had applied to the DCGI for permission to conduct the phase-3 human clinical trials of Sputnik. Upon regulatory approval in India, RDIF will supply Dr Reddy's 100 million doses of the vaccine, the firm had said last month. The trials of Sputnik V are mired in controversy. The Russian government registered Sputnik V as a COVID-19 vaccine without conducting final clinical trials. Besides, the phase I and II of the trials involved merely 76 participants. The Indian scientists and medical experts are also of the opinion that the Indian government should conduct phase-2 trials of the vaccine to prove its safety and efficacy. Russia, had announced in August that it has developed the world's first <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> vaccine. However, the country had made the announcement before completion of phase-3 trials. A vaccine is deemed safe to be commercially available only after a larger efficacy trial which involves thousands of participants in the phase-3. However, the study of Sputnik trials published in The Lancet declared the vaccine as "Safe, well-tolerated, and does not cause serious adverse events in <keyword id="10049599" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="healthy-adult-volunteers">healthy adult volunteers</keyword>." As per the study, two small trials were conducted on two groups involving 38 healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 60, each. They were given a two-part immunisation. Each participant was given a dose of the first part of the vaccine, and then a booster with the second part, 21 days later. These volunteers were monitored over 42 days, and it was found that all of them developed antibodies against the virus within three weeks. Centre yet to decide on phase-3 trials of Russian COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V, says Health Minister Harsh Vardhan

Data on 19,866 volunteers were included in the efficacy analysis - 14,964 of whom received the <keyword id="24209" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaccine">vaccine</keyword> and 4,902 the placebo. The calculation is based on the analysis of 78 confirmed cases of Covid-19 identified in the placebo group (62 cases) and in the vaccine group (16 cases). Efficacy in the elderly group of 2,144 volunteers over 60 years old was 91.8 per cent and did not differ statistically from the 18-60 group, said the study, adding that Sputnik V provided full protection against severe cases of Covid-19. India’s Dr Reddy’s Lab to get 100 million doses of Russia’s COVID-19 vaccine after regulatory approval

Fortis Healthcare on Thursday announced that Sputnik V vaccine against Covid-19 will be available at two of its hospitals as part of a limited pilot roll-out from June 19. The two-dose Covid shot will be available at <keyword id="1120186" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fortis-Memorial-Research-Institute">Fortis Memorial Research Institute</keyword>, Gurugram and Fortis Hospital, <keyword id="13178" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mohali">Mohali</keyword>. It will be extended at more Fortis hospitals across 11 cities. The price per dose for Sputnik V (as fixed by the government) including administrative charges is ₹1,145. Fortis Healthcare to roll out Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine from June 19

The <keyword id="682334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Drugs-Controller-General-of-India" source="Orion">Drugs Controller General of India</keyword> (DCGI) has granted permission for the conducting of the Phase III bridging trials of Sputnik Light on the Indian population. The Sputnik Light is a single-dose <keyword id="8904563" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="COVID-19-vaccine" source="Orion">Covid-19 vaccine</keyword> of the <keyword id="9340724" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russian-vaccine" source="Orion">Russian vaccine</keyword> Sputnik. The nod comes after a recent study published in the medical journal The Lancet said that Sputnik Light showed 78.6 to 83.7 per cent efficacy against Covid-19, significantly higher than most two-shot vaccines. The Subject Expert Committee of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) in July had refused to grant emergency-use authorisation to Sputnik-Light, ruling out the need for the conduct of the <keyword id="9915130" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="phase-III-trial" source="Orion">phase III trial</keyword> of the Russian vaccine in the country. The committee had noted that Sputnik Light was the same as component-1 of <keyword id="9739267" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sputnik-V" source="Orion">Sputnik V</keyword> and its safety and immunogenicity data in the Indian population was already generated in a trial. The study was conducted on at least 40,000 elderly people in Argentina. Sputnik Light also reduced hospitalizations among the target population at 82.1-87.6 per cent, the study said. Hyderabad, Feb Pharma major Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd on Friday announced that it has initiated the process with the <keyword id="282629" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Drugs-Controller">Drugs Controller</keyword> General of India (<keyword id="172241" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="DCGI">DCGI</keyword>) for Emergency Use Authorization (<keyword id="2503801" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="EUA">EUA</keyword>) of the well-studied human adenoviral vector-based platform vaccine candidate, <keyword id="9739267" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sputnik-V">Sputnik V</keyword>. As part of the review process, Dr. Reddy's will present the safety profile of the phase 2 study, and interim data of the phase 3 study, which is expected to complete by February 21, the Hyderabad-based firm said.
