Jennifer Petersen, 48, spends hours scanning books for content she finds sexually explicit and filing challenges with Spotsylvania County Public Schools, where one of her children is enrolled and another is a recent graduate, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2023/09/28/virginia-frequent-school-book-challenger-spotsylvania/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Washington Post</a> reported. Out of 73 books she read in one year, she challenged 71 of them, the Post reported. The remaining two were removed before she had the chance to get to them.In her complaints, seen by the Post, she wrote that one book "reads like a how-to guide for raping teens." Petersen was one of them. The majority of objections were on books authored by or about LGBTQ+ people or people of color. While some members of the community have praised Petersen, others have called the effort a waste of time and money. A library staffer told the Post that nearly a dozen people spent 40 hours per week just on Petersen's book challenges.Peterson's ongoing effort comes at a time when <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-banned-books-in-conservative-school-districts-lgbtq-race-gender-2022-4">book-banning efforts</a> are going national. In Virginia's 7th district, both Democrats and Republicans named abortion and the economy as among their top issues. Abortion has played a particularly central role in Democratic Rep. How dare you make a decision like that, that you couldn't possibly understand or know how it affects a woman?" The loyal Democrat said she's not sure she wants to see Biden run for re-election. "He doesn't represent the party well," Cameron said. "We have to have an infusion of some youth and vitality ... It's horrendous," said Jill, a stay-at-home mom. "But a life is a life." Jill said she had an abortion when she was 19 and deeply regrets it. If she'd gone through with her teen pregnancy, she said, "I wouldn't have the life that I have right now, but I would be much more whole and not be mourning for the rest of my life."She said she voted for Trump with her "nose held" and that she doesn't know whether he won the 2020 election. "I haven't researched it enough to have a firm opinion on that," she said. Democratic voters in a competitive Virginia district say Biden should retire and their Republican counterparts want Trump to run

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Two VA school board members called for burning books that have been deemed worthy of removal.</li><li>The Spotsylvania County School Board directed staff to begin removing "sexually explicit" books from library shelves.</li></ul>Amid the GOP's nationwide push against teaching about race and <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/conservatives-propose-revised-sex-ed-rules-lgbtq-pushback-n1264266">sexuality</a> in schools, two members of the Spotsylvania County School Board in <keyword id="11918128" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="virginia" source="Orion">Virginia</keyword> advocated for burning certain books, <a href="https://fredericksburg.com/news/local/education/spotsylvania-school-board-orders-libraries-to-remove-sexually-explicit-books/article_6c54507a-6383-534d-89b9-c2deb1f6ba17.html">according to the Fredericksburg-based Free Lance-Star newspaper.</a>This came as the school board directed staff to begin removing "sexually explicit" books from library shelves, after voting 6-0 in favor of the removal, the Lance-Star reported. The board has plans to review how certain books or materials are defined as "objectionable," the paper said, which opens the door for other content to be removed. Courtland representative Rabih Abuismail and Livingston representative Kirk Twigg both championed burning the books that have been removed. "I think we should throw those books in a fire," Abuismail said. Meanwhile, Twigg said he wanted to "see the books before we burn them so we can identify within our community that we are eradicating this bad stuff."Book burnings have a dark history linked to censorship and repressive regimes, and are often associated with Nazi Germany. Infamous Nazi book burnings in 1933 targeted thousands of books <a href="https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/book-burning">deemed "un-German,"</a> including the works of Jewish authors like like Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud, as well as banned American writers like Ernest Hemingway.<div type="image" title="A Nazi book burning" height="1453" width="2000" msid="87636253" hostid="261"></div>The directive to remove "sexually explicit" books was seemingly prompted by a school board meeting on Monday during which parents expressed concerns about literature students can access via the Riverbend High School's digital library app.One parent was apparently alarmed by the availability of "LGBTQIA" fiction, the Lance-Star said, and found a book called "33 Snowfish" by Adam Rapp especially troubling. The American Library Association named the book a Best Book for Young Adults in 2004. According to <a href="https://www.publishersweekly.com/978-0-7636-1874-2">a Publishers Weekly review</a>, the book is "dark tale about three runaways who understand hatred and violence better than love." As the GOP vies to <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/04/02/983385949/with-trump-off-the-ballot-republicans-look-to-regain-votes-in-the-suburbs">win back support from suburban voters</a> post-Trump, Republican leaders and politicians across the country have increasingly <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/03/us/politics/school-republican-campaign-issue.html">looked to schools as a prime battleground</a> for the many culture wars they're waging. We've really had to lean into science as it has been accumulating so that we can serve our patients well.<div type="image" title="Webb-1" height="2676" width="4014" msid="78972935" hostid="261"></div>At the same time, I'm seeing the economic pressures that force people into spaces where they can possibly get sick. It's been interesting having that dual perspective both of the clinical side and the economic side of this from my vantage point as a doctor.Some people are hesitant to take a coronavirus vaccine when it becomes available <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fauci-warns-against-rushed-approval-of-covid-19-vaccine-2020-8">because they question its safety</a>. What would you say to people with those concerns?Some of the concern has to do with the way that some of our science-based organizations have been undermined. I would tell people to focus on the science. If we're seeing that a vaccine is developing, let's keep our eye on the FDA [Food and Drug Administration] process for approving the vaccine. Is that process consistent with the process we used to approve the flu vaccine or pneumonia vaccines or some of the vaccines that we've been administering for years? As health professionals, once those conditions are met to our satisfaction and we can see how the vaccines were developed, we'll gladly say that it's a good idea. We're keeping a close eye on it.If elected, you would be representing one of the most rural districts of any House Democrat. What are some of the issues that you would be advocating for?I live in Charlottesville now, but I'm from Spotsylvania County [Va.] and my wife's from Appomattox County [Va.] so we're from relatively rural spaces. That helps with having insight into what folks face in a district like this. On the economic front, rural broadband is a key issue. You're seeing the impact of rural broadband on education play outright now in the midst of this pandemic and the digital divide is making it harder for kids to learn. We need to have more post-secondary options, like job training, vocational tech programs, and apprenticeships. Rural healthcare access is huge — there have been 15 rural hospital closures across the US so far in 2020. If you are losing the hospitals, not only are you losing the local economic issues, but also the option for people to get the healthcare that they need.If the Green New Deal was put up for a vote during your first days in Congress, would you support it?I don't support the Green New Deal in terms of the 14-page aspirational document that we've looked it. To me, I just lean into the science. What does it tell us? We need to reduce carbon emissions by 45% by 2030 and completely decarbonize by 2050. I say we can do that in the manufacturing, construction, and transportation sectors. This is not just about the moral importance of preserving our environment, but it's also an economic conversation. I like framing the conversation in those terms. Clean and renewable energy technologies are cheaper now than fossil fuel technologies.What kinds of policing reforms could be implemented to improve relations between members of the community and police departments?We need reform across our criminal justice system in order to achieve that idea of justice and public safety for everybody. That's policing, prosecution, adjudication, sentencing, corrections, and reentry. At every step, there are disparities along the way. That's where I'd like to give a nod to the Trump administration — the First Step Act was a step in the right direction. The law addressed issues in sentencing, corrections, and reentry, but it's not comprehensive and doesn't solve everything, so we have to continue the work. I don't support defunding the police. I think it's merely a political wedge that people are trying to use in a crisis moment for our country, at a time where we need to be bringing law enforcement and our communities together to face our challenges.

Hundreds of Sears stores have closed in the last few years.</li></ul>Sears and Kmart stores are facing more closures.
