Amid the growing Twitter-Meta fight over Threads app, Chinese short-video-making app <keyword id="6762469" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tiktok" source="Orion">TikTok</keyword> has launched a subscription-based music streaming service to take on market leaders <keyword id="6354427" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="apple" source="Orion">Apple</keyword> and <keyword id="685487" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="spotify" source="Orion">Spotify</keyword>. The subscription-only music streaming service called "TikTok Music" has been launched first in Brazil and Indonesia. The service replaces ByteDance's existing streaming service, Resso (which is available in India too), which will shut down on September 5 in Brazil and Indonesia. Existing Resso users can transfer their accounts to the new app "with the click of a button". "We are pleased to introduce TikTok Music, a new kind of service that combines the power of music discovery on TikTok with a best-in-class streaming service. TikTok Music will make it easy for people in Indonesia and Brazil to save, download and share their favourite viral tracks from TikTok," Ole Obermann, global head of Music Business Development at TikTok, said in a statement. TikTok Music lets users sync the service to their existing TikTok accounts and listen, download and share songs, reports TechCrunch.The service includes the catalogs of major record companies, including Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and Sony Music. A TikTok Music subscription costs $3.49 a month in Brazil, and $3.25 for iOS users in Indonesia. Android users in Indonesia need to pay $2.96 a month for the first year, then $3.25 afterwards. TikTok Music doesn't include a free membership option, but offers a one-month free trial. The lawsuit by Warner Chappel Three days ahead of its launch in India, Spotify’s grand entry into one of the biggest music streaming markets in the world was marred by a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/spotify-india-launch-delayed-by-warner-music/articleshow/68165261.cms">lawsuit by Warner Chappel</a> — Warner Music Group’s local music publishing arm in February 2019. The Swedish music streaming app argued that it was using an Indian law, which allowed radio stations to play music from Chappel, to provide songs on its platform. The music streaming giant had a rough start entering an already competitive market and delays due to its dispute with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/spotify-india-launch-delayed-by-warner-music/articleshow/68165261.cms">Warner Music Group</a>. Local music takes a back seat Despite Spotify's impetus on localising its app for India, it's only users between 35 to 44 years of age that listen to mostly to local music — otherwise, international pop takes the cake. Not only is it popular with their target audience, GenZ and millennials, but Senorita by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello was the most streamed track among users older than 55 years. However, the age barrier is not uniform across India. In Goa, across all age groups, Spotify users only listen to international music — some in English, some in Korean. The K-Pop genre is also popular in clusters, especially in the northeast states — except from Assam where users mostly listen to Punjabi music. That being said, local music seems to have found its foothold in Gujarat where Spotify claims that users aged 25 to 55 years old only consume Bollywood Hindi music. Local tracks are also popular with male listeners in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chandigarh, and Telangana. The road ahead Since its launch, Spotify has been streaming in over 2,300 cities across India with over 6,400 local artists represented on the platform. However, Kantar and VTION's <a href="https://musically.com/2020/02/25/independent-report-pegs-gaana-as-top-indian-music-service/">OTT Audience Measurement Insights</a> report published in January estimates that Spotify still has a lot of catching up to do. It claims that Gaana is leading with 30% market share followed by JioSaavn, which has 24% of the market. Spotify lags behind at par with Wynk at 17% each. It should be noted that the study leaves out YouTube Music — a music-streaming juggernaut in India that would likely reduce Spotify's market share even further. India is an important market for Spotify. Competition is on the rise globally and Spotify needs to keep up. Spotify claims that this is ‘abusive behaviour’ on Warner’s part in order to leverage a better deal. Warner told <a href="https://variety.com/2019/digital/news/spotify-india-warner-music-sues-1203148363/">Variety</a> that ‘they had no choice’ since Spotify ‘abruptly changed course’. The Swedish company informed Business Insider India that it will now be filing for a statutory license that will prevent such practices and ensure that all rights holders are compensated fairly.

But when concerts are canceled because of rising COVID-19 cases, even that income goes away.In an Instagram post on Tuesday, Arie, an R&amp;B artist with over 1 million monthly Spotify listeners, explained her motivation behind leaving the streaming service, mentioning the "language around race" that Rogan used in a recent podcast. This shows the type of company they are and the company they keep."<h2>The fight for a 'penny per stream' </h2>Young's boycott pushed back on the idea that artists "absolutely have to be on Spotify" for exposure despite its meager payouts, Gorman said. The <a href="https://www.unionofmusicians.org/justice-at-spotify">Union of Musicians and Allied Workers</a>, a group with more than 27,000 members of the music industry, have called on Spotify to increase its royalty payment to at least a penny per stream as part of the <a href="https://www.unionofmusicians.org/news/justiceatspotify-a-year-in-review">#justiceatSpotify</a> campaign it rolled out last year. The incident called attention to the fact that many artists don't own the rights to their music. In order for an artist to remove their catalog from Spotify, they often need approval from other stakeholders. Even Neil Young couldn't remove his music from Spotify on his own. "Before I told my friends at Warner Bros about my desire to leave the Spotify platform, I was reminded by my own legal forces that contractually I did not have the control of my music to do that," Young <a href="https://neilyoungarchives.com/news/1/article?id=Spotify-In-The-Name-Of-Truth">wrote on his website</a> last week. "Thank you Warner Brothers for standing with me and taking the hit — losing 60% of my worldwide streaming income in the name of truth."Such a move is especially hard for midsize artists. But bands like Eve6 and Belly — who say they want to remove their music from Spotify but legally can't — are asking fans to delete the streaming service anyway. They've even gone as far as replacing their Spotify profile banner with a black and green "Delete Spotify" image. "It's been frustrating seeing this story get painted as a culture war thing," Eve6 said in a now viral Twitter thread. "Joe Rogan is only important in that he highlights Spotify's absurdly exploitative business practices."

But now, both Windows users and Android users, old and new, can sign up for Spotify's premium subscriptions. Spotify's done its part in trying to customise its usage for India with 8-different language preferences to choose from once users have signed up. Users can also customise their artist preferences which Spotify then users to curate a custom playlist. That being said, JioSaavn and Gaana have 16 languages to choose from.

Premium is not for everyone Regardless of whether you're willing to shell out money for a subscription, you can still use the free version of the app that lets you listen to whatever music is available. The premium membership has the added benefit of being ad-free and allowing users to listen to music when they’re offline as well — a boon for users that have limited data options or connectivity. While the number of times you can skip a song are limited in the free version of Spotify, the premium version allows for unlimited skips and playing any track without restrictions. The most significant feature of the premium membership, especially for audiophiles, is probably the availability of higher quality audio. The free version of the app only streams at 96kbps, which is a small but noteworthy drop in quality in comparison to a CD. The premium version, on the other hand, streams music at 320kbps which is as good as the quality on a CD. On most apps, including Spotify's competitors in the Indian market, high quality audio is only available on a paid subscription plan. Spotify's launch is welcome news of its existing fans but the real challenge for the music streaming lies ahead as it tries to go head-to-head with JioSaavn and Gaana — the top two most popular music streaming services in India with the most market share. Archie Comics on Spotify will include content for older audiences

<ul><li>TikTok’s parent company ByteDance launched its <keyword id="8867313" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-music-streaming-app">new music streaming app</keyword> <keyword id="8433078" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="resso">Resso</keyword> in India today.</li><li>In an interview with Business Insider, Resso’s head of music content and partnerships at Resso Hari Nair called the app a “social music streaming experience.”</li><li>He said the aim of the app is to turn ‘passive’ music listening into ‘active’ listening.</li></ul>TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, just launched in a new music streaming app Resso in India. The internet technology company based out of Beijing is entering an already competitive market. It will have to go up against local players like Gaana and Mukesh Ambani-owned JioSaavn as well as international giants like Spotify. Resso is betting that its ‘vibes’ will stand out in the crowded market — a feature in the app that allows the user to post GIFs or short videos to individual songs. The aim is to make the music listening experience more “active” rather than “passive” and create a “social music streaming experience”, according to Resso’s head of music content and partnerships Hari Nair. “There was a clear void between streaming services and social media. Resso connects both of them very nicely,” Nair told Business Insider India. Vibes comes coupled with the comments feature so that listeners can interact with people listening to the same song. The paradox of choice Most popular music streaming apps are open to an explore page where users can browse through playlists and recent releases to choose what they want to listen to. Resso takes an approach that is exactly opposite. Instead of letting you choose, it chooses for you. The app’s instant-play feature starts streaming songs as soon as you open the app. Listeners can still dig into other options by navigating to the explore tab but for others who are bogged down by the ‘paradox of choice’ — having to choose between too many options — it’s a welcome reprieve to let Resso take control. “Many people came back to us and said that they didn’t need to skip over songs while using the instant-play feature so that means the recommendation is working. There were many motivating key points,” said Nair. However, since the suggestions are based on the app’s own artificial intelligence-based algorithm, the song choices largely depend on the preferences you select while signing up for an account. Considering that Spotify’s niche is its own algorithm, Resso will have to prove its mettle in how well it knows its listeners. Indie artists and exclusive songs One of the biggest pain points of the music streaming industry is that platforms have now started releasing songs which are exclusive. For instance, a JioSaavn user would have to download Gaana in order to listen to Mithi Mithi by Amrit Maan featuring Jasmine Sandals since it’s a Gaana exclusive — even though JioSaavn features other songs by the same artist. And, that’s something that even Resso can’t avoid. “I think that’s the nature of the industry, you can’t help it. All you can do is sign up more independent artists on your platform so that they don’t go anywhere,” said Nair. Independent artists are going to be a big play for the ByteDance-owned music streaming app. They plan on being the most aggressive to sign up new talent in the industry going forward. “Artists can come through a label or come directly to us, we will sign up all of them. We’ve already partnered with quite a few independent labels including Azaadi Records and BigBang. There are a couple of artists who have approached us directly. We will be most aggressive on independent music,” said Nair. Unlike Spotify’s rough start in India, Resso has licensing deals with all international and local majors locked down, including Warner, T-Series, Saregama, TimesMusic and others. Most regional majors are on board as well with the exception of one or two, which Nair said will be finalised in the coming month or two. The app is available for download on the Google Play Store and the iOS App Store. It’s free for use. The version has a limited music streaming to 128 kbps and users won’t be able to download songs. New Delhi, Mar 4 () ByteDance, which runs short-video platform TikTok, has launched a new music streaming service 'Resso' to take on competitors like Gaana, JioSaavn and Spotify in the Indian market. Resso, which calls itself the world's first social music streaming app, is also looking at expanding its service to Indonesia in the the next few months. "India is the first market where we are rolling out. The app is targeted at 18-24 year olds. It includes many exclusive and easy-to-use social features that will enable these Gen Z users to instantly connect with a larger community," Resso India Head of Music Content and Partnership Hari Nair told . He added that the company is working on expanding to Indonesia over the next few months. For accessing features like downloadable content, unlimited skips and high-quality audio, users will need to upgrade to a monthly premium subscription of Rs 99 for Android and Rs 119 for iOS. The basic app is free for users. Nair said the company's initial focus is on getting more users onboard but declined to comment on specific numbers. Noting that the company has partnered with local and international players, Nair said Resso has also inked deals with labels like Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, Merlin and Beggars Group, T-Series, Saregama, Zee Music, YRF Music, Lahiri Music, Divo and Muzik 247, among others. Resso, which allows users to generate content for the 'Vibes' feature, has set up a content moderation team to ensure that that inappropriate content is put up. The app has a scroll format (similar to TikTok) and allows users to discover music content as soon as they open the app. "Gen Z and millennials are at the core of our offering and both music and social networking are central to their daily lives. The relationship between music and the listener is currently passive but with Vibes, comments and other features, Resso aims to transform this through a new and compelling music streaming experience," Nair said. So, if you look back at 2010, we started in a very traditional ad network position when there was tremendous consumption happening across multiple channels. There were many international destinations from both mobile applications and websites, which had audiences from India. The local brands wanted to advertise on those opportunities. Every advertiser wants to be where their audience is, but logistically it was not feasible back then. So we took a very standard ad network position by aggregating all possible destinations to advertise across all different digital advertising channels through our proprietary technology and added a lot of layers of targeting, relevance, and brand safety and brought it to the local advertisers and agencies. We also realized that the entire ecosystem was quite linear, where all the key digital advertising channels were looked at in isolation. There was search, social, video, and display. Even the mobile was considered a separate channel within digital. We started taking a cross-channel position to advocate for major brands and the agencies and advertisers to begin looking at all the channels more holistically. And there were some challenges in doing so because it was difficult to understand or map the outcome or measure one channel's outcome to the other. We brought in many tools and best practices from international markets that we were present in and started advocating this cross channel approach through cross channel attribution modeling. Today, if you look at it, you could see that the cross channel has gone beyond digital. Over time, we saw that we were getting a lot of regional opportunities outside of India, and we started establishing India more as a regional office. Today, we are managing eight markets in Asia, out of the Indian office. And we have got some of the large representations like Facebook, Twitter, GrabAds, Daily Motion, Lifesight, Outbrain in some of the other markets in the region. So it's an immensely satisfying position. We are proud to say that we are globally number one, we are regionally number one, and we are locally the number one in our business. Q. What makes you number one in the market? In the digital world, even more so than before, it is crucial to remain flexible and agile. So even though Httpool has grown to cover 30 plus markets and we work with close to 350 employees, we continue to be able to react and adapt quickly to the new realities to evolve and find the best model structure in working. Complete transparency is another aspect that makes us who we are in all geographies. Coupled with long-term vision and perseverance, transparency, in turn, feeds into creating stronger partnerships. These are the very core of our operation that has led to the success that we have tasted across. Q. How important is the Indian market in the global scheme of things? India is one of the largest economies that we are present in and one of the fastest-growing digital advertising markets. Besides that, the kind of talent availability we have in India is the right mix and right fit for all the regional expansion. We are operating in eight markets, and in almost every market, we have somebody from India who is supporting that, or somebody in India working for those markets. India is also where the functional leads are based out of for all APAC expansion -- our regional heads of marketing, HR, admin, finance, creative, measurement specialists, are all operating out of India currently. Q. How did COVID-19 and lockdown impact your business? COVID was a big blow to everyone. For us, there were a few things to think about and act upon, foremost towards our assets, which is our people. The moment we realized that this is bigger than what is being anticipated and things will be there longer than we believe, we immediately reached out to all our people. We assured them that the company would be there by their side in every eventuality, they're going to be looked after properly and assured them of all support. And at the same time, we aimed to get the motivation up, provide them with all the tools and methodologies so that they could continue executing our mandate in the new world. We fine-tuned ourselves to what each of our partners perceived as market realities in our markets, quickly adapted approaches and adjusted the value propositions. Fortunately, what was also happening was that digital consumption was increasing during that time. So, moving away from traditional and more towards digital amplified our position in the market as experts who can provide support, lend efficiency, effectiveness by bringing in best practices, methodology, technologies, and a lot of cross-market learnings due to our global position and ability to learn from regions as far away as Latin America and Europe.. So, this worked well for us. We were able to turn around our business ground within May itself. Q. Has COVID helped bring marketing analytics to the forefront, because digital has become more important than ever? Are more brands investing time and efforts in it and what kind of trends have you seen in the market after COVID? In the last few months, whether new brands are launched or services rendered, audiences being targeted, digital is becoming the primary communication channel. So the shift to the digital enterprise has happened. We were always advocating that, and we're trying to highlight the value. The current situation acted as a stimulus to improve upon and helped accept digital as one of the main focus areas and convergence platforms for all marketing initiatives. So the shift has happened already. And it is also because the consumption patterns have changed; right from discovery to purchase, everything is happening digitally now. People are often asking, 'what are you going to do in post-COVID times?' And for me, I don't think there is going to be something like “pre-COVID times” ever again because the stamp is going to be there on everyone -- on how businesses are run, how people think, how everything moves about now. It's all quite significantly impacted and is going to be a prolonged impact. So now, it is only about improving the experience for brands in digital, ensuring the brand safety, and being able to deliver on the KPIs because there's so much inventory, so many opportunities, destinations to advertise. Brands now only need to figure it out, or they need to be thoughtfully handheld on the spot to realize the best value proposition. Marketing analytics come in very handy here because it helps you recognize the value of your investment. Also the KPIs are constantly changing. Digital is now considered at every stage of the sales funnel and a lot of qualitative studies are being implemented to identify user behavior, product lift, and brand lift. So, marketing analytics is undoubtedly playing a more important role now. Other trends that we see are around video becoming the most prominent ad format; in the absence of any physical interactions, storytelling has to happen more explicitly, and video is the right format to do that. So we're seeing many video assets being produced by all our brands and agencies to advertise across all platforms. Q. As a marketeer, what has been your biggest learning from this experience? As a marketer, the most significant learning should be the adjustment from long term to short term focus. How key objectives can be achieved even with a very tactical perspective on media planning and buying. From a traditional mid-funnel approach, bottom-funnel, long-term ATL, BTL initiatives, I think object-oriented, tactical-focused planning and execution should be given equal importance. It's going to lend to a much more agile and flexible ecosystem and way of it approaching advertising, coupled with measuring it correctly. So measurement is another essential learning that I've developed, in terms of seeing how it can help you realize the value of the investment and, at the same time, how it feeds into your decision making process. We've seen brands looking at the same platforms completely differently after running the campaign and measuring it correctly. Q. What kind of growth have you seen so far, and what is your roadmap and vision for the next few years? If you look at our journey, we've been growing year-on-year since 2010 in India and regionally in Asia; we have succeeded in all the markets we exist in. In 2017, Sony pictures majority owned company IMS acquired a majority stake in our company. It was quite a strategic acquisition that created the largest platform of representations globally. It was so beneficial that we've been growing 300% year over year as Httpool over the past two years. And we plan to double again next year and continue this exponential growth for the next three to four years by unlocking the opportunities for all large platforms in all of the markets, while also expanding geographies and adding on new products. Q. Are you planning to expand your businesses? Yes. We are planning to expand our business geographically across all Asian markets. We are trying to open more offices in India and other metros. We are also trying to bring more partnerships into the Indian market. We are recruiting more talent from the Indian market for the Asian expansions. So, we are looking at expansion at all levels.

And just like its movies and television shows, Paramount's sale included twists, turns, and a slew of characters.In the end, media company Skydance, with help from RedBird Capital Partners and KKR, secured the goods. The deal is expected to be announced in the coming days and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paramount-skydance-agree-merger-terms-reports-2024-6">values Paramount at $8 billion</a>.Paramount had no shortage of high-profile suitors. Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav, media entrepreneur Byron Allen, and private-equity giant Apollo, in collaboration with Sony, were among those who considered buying the company.Skydance might not be as recognizable a name, but the company's owner and CEO David Ellison is. As the son of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/david-ellison-paramount-larry-ellison-tech-2024-4">billionaire Oracle founder Larry Ellison</a>, he's basically tech royalty.But all the interest in Paramount this year didn't equate to smooth sailing. The day after broadcasting the Super Bowl <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paramount-global-sale-media-trouble-digital-streaming-redstone-viacom-2024-2">it announced companywide layoffs</a>. A few months later its CEO <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paramount-ceo-bob-bakish-out-2024-4">was shown the door</a>. At least one high-profile investor <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/warren-buffett-paramount-billion-dollar-loss-2024-5">headed for the exits as well</a>.All the while, Paramount's stock suffered. What are your initial thoughts on Skydance being the one to seal the deal?Well, it's not sealed yet. This thing may still get derailed by a lawsuit from cranky investors. But if it does go through: It's the least-bad version for Hollywood, since owner-to-be David Ellison wants to keep Paramount making movies and TV shows, and that isn't a foregone conclusion with any other buyer.Paramount has fallen pretty far behind its peers in streaming. What is its biggest pain point that Skydance will look to address?Paramount loses money on streaming, like many of its peers. That's fixable. It has a subscale audience, and I don't know how a new owner fixes that.The deal means one of the richest people in the world is tangentially connected to Paramount. How could that play a factor?<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/david-ellison-paramount-larry-ellison-tech-2024-4">As I've written</a>, the most important thing about David Ellison being Larry Ellison's son is that his dad is helping to finance the deal (what a dad!). But suggestions that Larry Ellison's tech background will help his son run a Hollywood studio make no sense.As for other streamers, are any happy, or upset, by the outcome of this deal?The most important question for Paramount isn't "who owns Paramount?" It's "is Paramount big enough to survive on its own?"
