"We also look for a certain spark, which typically goes back to the entrepreneur. We look for people who see solutions where others see problems."</span></p><p><span>The US accounts for 49% of unicorns, followed by China with 26%. Major companies like Uber, Airbnb, and Stripe have all been backed by many of the mega funds. </span></p><p><span>"The investment landscape is pretty competitive," added Lixandru. The startup has grown from 300,000 users in 2004 to 51 million users today. Just during last year’s IPL, the gaming startup gained over 20 million users, Bhavit Sheth, COO and co-founder of Dream11 told Business Insider. <br /><br />Now, with the official partnership the numbers are only set to grow. <br /><br />“Dream11 is deeply integrating with the IPL, which is set to grow from its 1.4 billion TV impressions and 200 million online viewers in 2018, to achieve our goal of growing from 51 million users to 100 million users in 2019,” said Harsh Jain, CEO and co-founder of Dream11.<br /><br /> The startup which is on the brink of becoming India’s first gaming unicorn has been around for 11 years, although it saw its popularity reach the peak with last year’s IPL. Gaming startup Dream11 strikes gold as the official partner of IPL

<ul><li>Dream11 founder Harsh Jain shared his plight with finding investors in the first few years of his startup that is now a unicorn.</li><li>At the TiE Global Summit 2019, Jain said that the first 150 investors refused to invest in Dream11 but he learnt a lot from those rejections.</li><li>It raised $110 million from Tencent. It turned unicorn (startup with a valuation of over $1 billion) in November 2019 </li><li>Its popularity skyrocketed after IPL and ICC signed them as the official partner.</li></ul>In 2009, Harsh Jain and Bhavit Sheth were living a fantasy. Those were times when iPhones were just becoming popular and smartphones are not all-pervading like they are –right now. Even for those who owned such phones, 2G powered data did not come cheap. Yet, the Founders of Dream11 were trying to raise money for a fantasy cricket game shaped after EPL, after IPL was launched a year back.<br /><br />“We had 150 people say ‘No’ before we got to our first funding. Perseverance is what it takes. Every single no came with a why, it taught me something about our business and how to grow,” Jain said at the TiE Global Summit (TGS). In a session chaired by Business Insider at the Summit — an annual event which showcased India's vibrant startup ecosystem — Jain shared the journey of his startup that introduced '<keyword id="6370198" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="fantasy-gaming">fantasy gaming</keyword>' as a business to India.<br /><br />The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) is a global not-for-profit organisation founded in 1992 by a bunch of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs who had roots in the subcontinent. TiE helps startups with mentoring, networking, education, funding, and incubation. Dream11 founder Harsh Jain was a headliner at this year's edition of the TGS. <br /><br /><strong>The Dream journey</strong><br /><br />Within nine years, Dream11 raised $110 million from Tencent. It turned unicorn (startup with a valuation of over $1 billion) in November 2019 after a secondary investment from Steadview Capital, an Asia-focused alternative asset manager. <br /><br />Its popularity skyrocketed first after IPL and ICC both signed them on as the official partner. It now has 75 million users on its platform and has a robust model to go with - as it earns 15-20% of a gamer’s winnings.<br /><br />Jain believes that there is a lot of potential ahead for fantasy gaming. “India is a large market to address where 700 million people expected to use sports online in India in the next few years,” he said. Other than providing a platform for gaming, Jain believes that their offering provides with something more--- a way to overcome tediousness.<br /><br /> “Indians are bored that's why they keep looking at their phones. Suddenly because of Jio everyone has data and access, we need to engage them and provide entertainment. ‘I heard 150 noes before first funding’- reveals one of India's newest unicorns Dream11

The <a href="https://www.livelaw.in/news-updates/dream-11-bombay-hc-dismisses-pil-fantasy-league-145760">High Court</a> dismissed a PIL filed by an advocate and said that Dream11 is a game of skill and not of chance. <br /><br />The PIL had claimed that online fantasy league game encourages gambling. <br /><br />This comes after the Punjab and Haryana High Court too declared the Dream11 format of fantasy sports as legal. The order said that the game requires considerable skill and judgment. This order was further ratified by the Supreme Court. <br /><br />The Indian fantasy gaming industry is projected to be a ₹118.8 billion market by 2023. While cricket holds the majority of the market share, other games are picking up too.<br /><br />Dream11 has had a great run this year – from turning a unicorn with a billion Dollar valuation, in April 2019. Its users also swelled to 67 million after IPL in 2019, and was also the official partners for the league. <br /><br />With the ongoing World Cup, Dream11 aims to gain even more. <br /><br />“We expect to have 90 million users by the end of the World Cup and 100 million by the end of 2019,” Bhavit Sheth, COO, Dream11 had told Business Insider in an interview earlier. Two Indian courts have now ruled that online fantasy leagues are legal and a game of skill

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Brian Ach/Getty </span></p><p class="caption">Bill Gurley of Benchmark Capital.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Tech venture capitalist Bill Gurley thinks Silicon Valley 'unicorns' are growing up and realizing they need to be profitable.</strong></li><li><strong>But he also said that recent tech IPOs like Snap Inc.'s will lead private unicorns to possibly delay going public out of fear.</strong></li></ul><p><br />Silicon Valley's most valuable startups are realizing that they need to "grow up," according to longtime tech VC Bill Gurley.</p><p>"As many of the unicorns mature in age, many are coming to the recognition that they need to grow up, get profitable, go public, or do something along those lines," Gurley said during an interview on CNBC on Friday, referring to the 'unicorn' startups that are valued by private investors at $1 billion or more.</p><p>"This silly notion of we're going to stay private forever is not going to play out in a positive way," he warned.</p><p>Gurley's perspective has some bias. As a venture capitalist who invests in startups, he needs those startups to IPO (or get acquired) so that he can reap his returns. But as the tech IPO market regains momentum <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/2017-is-going-to-witness-a-rebound-in-the-ipo-market-2017-2">after a slow 2016</a>, and in the wake of a few <a href="http://nordic.businessinsider.com/startups-that-raised-148-billion-have-shut-down-or-may-soon-2017-7/">high-profile tech flameouts this year</a>, <span>Gurley's words come at an important time for startups considering their next steps.</span></p><p>Gurley's venture capital firm, Benchmark, is best known for its early investments in companies like Uber, Snap, Twitter, and eBay. Gurley was a member of Uber's board until Benchmark helped force the removal of ex-CEO Travis Kalanick earlier this year.</p><p>"2017 has been a very difficult year," Gurley said on CNBC when asked about Uber. "And it's been one where we've been working quite diligently behind the scenes to try to move things forward for the company." Benchmark <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-travis-kalanick-sued-for-alleged-fraud-by-benchmark-capital-2017-8">sued Kalanick in August</a> amidst a power grab for Uber's board seats that ultimately led to the hiring of now-CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.</p><h2>Afraid to play in the public markets</h2><p>Since <span>Khosrowshahi came on board, Uber has publicly committed to aim for a 2019 IPO.</span></p><p><span>The fate of tech companies entering the public markets this year has been mixed. Video streaming company Roku has seen its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/roku-stock-tripled-since-ipo-short-sellers-getting-crushed-2017-11">stock more than double since going public </a>in September. And enterprise tech company's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sendgrid-ipo-founders-arent-the-big-financial-winners-2017-11">SendGrid jumped 14% on its</a> IPO this week.</span></p><p><span> But the most high profile IPO of the year has not fared so well. Snap Inc, the parent company of Snapchat, has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/snapchat-reports-q3-earnings-2017-11">gotten crushed</a> and is trading well below its $17 IPO price.</span></p><p>When asked about the dismal debut of Snap, one of Benchmark's investments, on Wall Street earlier this year, Gurley said the event could cause other unicorns to be afraid of going public - a move he compared to graduating from college to professional sports.</p><p>"I think you're going to see a large number of unicorns who were afraid to play on Sunday, afraid to play in the public markets, that didn't get their act together in time," he said. "Didn't get profitable. <ul><li>The <keyword id="6370199" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Federation-of-Sports-Gaming">Indian Federation of Sports Gaming</keyword> (IFSG) is the country’s only self-regulatory industry body.</li><li>It has appointed former <keyword id="137646" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court-judge">Supreme Court judge</keyword> <keyword id="798960" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="AK-Sikri">AK Sikri</keyword> as its Ethics Officer. </li><li>The Indian <keyword id="6370198" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="fantasy-gaming">fantasy gaming</keyword> market is projected to touch $5 billion in the next two years with players like Dream11, Mobile Premier League leading the industry.</li></ul>As the fantasy gaming market grows in India, The Indian Federation of Sports Gaming (IFSG), which is the country’s only self-regulatory industry body, has appointed former Supreme Court judge AK Sikri as its Ethics Officer. <br /><br />Sikri, as the Ombudsman, will be responsible for investigating queries/complaints raised by users. <br /><br />“The sports gaming industry provides an untapped opportunity for sports lovers to showcase their sports knowledge and come closer to their favorite sport. As the industry prepares for the next wave of sports enthusiasts, as a self-regulatory industry body it is important to protect and educate operators and users about the industry and its best practices,” said Justice A K Sikri, Ombudsman, IFSG. <br /><br />IFSG currently has 32 members across fantasy sports operators and sports analytics firms.<br /><br />The Indian fantasy gaming market is projected to touch $5 billion in the next two years and has players like Dream11, Mobile Premier League leading the industry.<br /><br />Dream11, which has over 60 million users is associated with major cricketing events like the Indian Premier League and the ICC World Cup. MS Dhoni is its brand ambassador. Dream11 also became India’s first gaming unicorn in April 2019.<br /><br />Another player in the same field is Mobile Premier League which gained 20 million users within seven months of its launch. It also raised $35.5 million from Sequoia India. MPL has Indian skipper Virat Kohli as its brand ambassador.<br />

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>London dominates the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> technology industry but the Scottish capital of Edinburgh is well positioned to capitalise on a global tech market, <a href="http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/news/uk/scotland/article4655799.ece" target="_blank">The Times reports</a>, possibly creating more unicorns in the process.</p><p>The number of startups in Scotland has increased 43% over the last five years to approximately 3,000, with Edinburgh reportedly having a growth rate beyond the rest of the UK.</p><p>John Peebles, an American CEO of Edinburgh-based training management software provider Administrate, told The Times that Edinburgh is in a "sweet spot" to capitalise on the global technology market.</p><p>One of the main reasons for this is because Scottish students get their university fees paid for, meaning they graduate without any debt and are therefore more willing to take a leap of faith and join a startup when they graduate.</p><p>"These people can afford to take a risk and are highly trained," Peebles said. "It's important that Edinburgh is a relatively cheap place to live and people can enjoy a good quality of life."</p><p>Students in the US and England on the other hand are graduating with tens of thousands of pounds in debt and in need of a steady job.</p><p>It's all very well getting a free education but the calibre of that education is what really counts. Fortunately, Edinburgh has several strong universities within its boundaries or on its doorstep, including Edinburgh University, Glasgow University, and St. Andrews University.</p><p>The increasing amount of interest from overseas investors in Edinburgh-based companies could also help the city's startups grow into technology giants.</p><p>Edinburgh's fast-growing digital companies like flight comparison website Skyscanner and fantasy sports website FanDuel have been backed by well known investors including Sequoia and Google Capital.</p><p>As a result, Edinburgh is one of the few UK cities outside London that has created technology companies with valuations in excess of $1 billion (£677 million), or "unicorns" as they are otherwise known.</p><p>The UK government is aiming to diversify the technology sector so that more large firms are created outside London.
