Flight departures at the Delhi airport's Terminal 1 were suspended till 2 pm on Friday after a portion of its roof collapsed due to heavy rains, killing one person, according to sources. Five people were injured in the incident that occurred around 5 am. The sources said flight departures at T1, which has only domestic flight operations, have been suspended till 2 pm and the airport operator is looking to temporarily shift operations from T1 to T2 and T3. The flight departures were suspended soon after the roof collapse incident. Passengers who were already inside the terminal boarded their flights. The departures were completely suspended around 7:30 am. Flight arrivals have not been impacted, the sources said. "Due to heavy rain since early this morning, a portion of the canopy at the old departure forecourt of the Delhi airport's Terminal-1 collapsed around 5 am. There are <keyword id="20321609" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Injuries-reported" source="keywords">injuries reported</keyword> and emergency personnel are working to provide all necessary assistance and medical aid to those affected," a Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) spokesperson said in a statement. As a result of this incident, the spokesperson said, all departures from Terminal 1 are temporarily suspended and check-in counters have been closed as a safety measure. "We sincerely regret this disruption and apologize for any inconvenience caused." the spokesperson said. In a post on X, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said that he was monitoring the situation and the injured have been shifted to the hospital. "Personally monitoring the roof collapse incident at T1 Delhi Airport. First responders are working at site. Also advised the airlines to assist all affected passengers at T1. "The injured have been evacuated to hospital. Rescue operations are still ongoing," he said. In a statement, an IndiGo spokesperson said flight operations are impacted due to structural damage at T1 due to adverse weather conditions. "This has led to flight cancellations in Delhi as passengers are not able to enter the terminal. Passengers already inside the terminal will be able to board their planned flights, but those with flights later in the day will be offered alternatives," the airline said in a statement. The airline also said the unplanned situation has led to operations across the network being impacted. "Customers are advised to keep a track of and confirm their flight status before leaving for the airport," it said. SpiceJet said in a post on X that flights have been cancelled as T1 will remain partially closed for operations until further notice.  Earlier, in case of web check -ins, the airlines charged extra only for certain seats such as the ones along the aisle, window-facing or the seats with additional legroom. The charges for lowest seats in IndiGo and Spicejet are ₹100 and ₹99, respectively. IndiGo <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/business/indigo-to-charge-for-web-check-in-of-all-seats#gs.npT1Cys">reportedly</a> said that the revised policy has been effective since 14 November and the seats will be charged according to the flyer preferences, starting from ₹100 to ₹800. According to the revised policy, a first row seat will be charged ₹800 extra, while a non-reclining seat next to the emergency exit will cost ₹600 more and a middle seat in the last row will cost an additional ₹100 if booked online. IndiGo said that the changes have been inline with the consumer preferences, for the advanced selection of seats. Indian government to review IndiGo, Spicejet policies to charge for web check-in after flyers protest

Beijing, China's new medium-lift carrier rocket Long March-8 made its maiden flight on Tuesday, sending five <keyword id="41530" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="satellites">satellites</keyword> successfully into planned orbit, the country's space agency said. The rocket was launched from <keyword id="10477350" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-wenchang-spacecraft-launch-site">the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site</keyword> in Hainan. The five experimental satellites will carry out the in-orbit verification of microwave imaging and other technologies. They will conduct experiments in space science, remote sensing and <keyword id="589992" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="communication-technologies">communication technologies</keyword>, official media reported. The Long March-8 rocket which has a total length of 50.3 meters, and a take-off mass of 356 tonnes can carry a payload of at least 4.5 tonnes to a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 700 km, <keyword id="9883300" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-china-national-space-administration">the China National Space Administration</keyword> (CNSA) said. The rocket fills the gap in China's launch capability to the sun-synchronous orbit from 3 tonnes to 4.5 tonnes, and is of great significance for accelerating the upgrading of launch vehicles, it said. On December 17, China's Chang'e-5 probe successfully completed the mission to bring home the first samples of the moon in over 40 years. A major space power, China launched its first Mars mission 'Tianwen-1' on July 23 this year. The Mars spacecraft which included an orbiter, lander and rover is on its way to the red planet. The new rocket, which was developed by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT), will enrich China's launch vehicle variety and help expand the country's aerospace activities, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. It will promote the upgrading of China's medium-sized launch vehicles and satisfy the needs of high-density launch missions for medium and low-orbit satellites Xiao Yun, chief commander of the rocket said. Song Zhengyu, chief designer of the Long March-8 rocket from the CALT, said the design of the rocket was based on technologies developed for previous Long March rockets. "It will lay a technological foundation for the development of large and heavy rockets, shortening development periods and reducing costs," Song said. The rocket can send one or multiple satellites in a single launch, and can undertake launch networking missions for low-Earth orbit satellites, according to Wu Yitian, deputy chief designer of the rocket. China's new space carrier rocket successfully launches five satellites on its maiden flight

The lack of flying slots and spaces to park aircrafts is due to the the fact that the airports are super busy and working overtime. What this has lead to, besides flight operators having to fight out for slots and space, is a bottleneck for the country’s growth in aviation. And this issue is mostly affecting newer airline carriers like Vistara and AirAsia which are rapidly expanding its business but have to deal with ‘undesirable’ slots for their operations. Since its inception Indian aviation industry has grown significantly. From 381 airplanes in 2008 to approximately 480 in 2017 along with <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/india-set-to-become-third-largest-buyer-of-passenger-planes/articleshow/58937405.cms">plans</a> to buy more aircrafts to deal with increasing flight demands, the industry’s growth in on an upward curve. The country is looking at nearly 1080 aeroplanes, out of which, more than 700 are scheduled for delivery within the next decade, and 400 within the next five years. As of June last year, a total of 880 aircrafts were on order, with most of them being placed by low-cost carriers such as IndiGo and SpiceJet. And this bulk demand as left <keyword id="6355752" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="airport">airport</keyword> authorities concerned.

 While more aircrafts mean more flights and therefore more money coming in for these airline operators, the airports are not adequately equipped to accommodate all the airplanes at the same time. And this leads to the airports only being able to offer slots at ‘undesirable’ hours, time slots that are not very popular with travellers, for newer flights. The Mumbai and Delhi airports, which are among the busiest in the world, are so packed with flights that they are only offering new slots between 11PM and 5AM. Airports in Goa and Pune are also offering only night slots. Airports in Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata also don't have any slots open during peak timings. What is making matters worse for domestic carriers is that even smaller airports like Jaipur, Jammu, Srinagar and Patna and many more are facing similar issues and can offer time slots that aren’t popular. Currently, 97% of the slots on the Mumbai airport are with the older airline carriers. In Delhi and Bengaluru, 89% and 86% are with older airlines respectively. At Chennai and Pune, the share is about 93% and 91% respectively.

UK passenger tests positive for COVID-19 in Chennai — sample sent to NIV to check for mutant strain

A flight carrying 222 passengers from the UK arrived at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) airport on Sunday night, they said. "Twenty-five passengers did not have COVID reports with them. So they were taken to a nearby quarantine centre, and their <keyword id="8688593" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus-tests">coronavirus tests</keyword> were conducted. Two of them tested positive," a West Bengal Health and Family Welfare Department official said. According to COVID-19 protocols, all <keyword id="970859" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="international-travellers">international travellers</keyword> coming to India will have to remain in isolation for seven days. With help of the airline concerned and <keyword id="87820" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Airports-Authority-of-India">the Airports Authority of India</keyword>, the health department is contacting those who were sitting near the two persons in the flight and requesting them to go for home isolation for two weeks, he said. "Those who have tested negative for COVID-19 on arrival at the airport are being requested to report to the state health department immediately if they develop any symptom of the infection," the official said. Civil Aviation Ministry said on Monday that all passenger flights connecting to the UK will remain suspended from Wednesday till December 31 in the wake of the emergence of a mutated variant of coronavirus there. Moreover, travellers coming from the UK through flights till Tuesday midnight would be tested for COVID-19 on arrival at airports "as a measure of abundant precaution", it added. Asked about the new variant of the virus, the state health department official said, "We only know that the new COVID-19 strain is more contagious. We need details of clinical tests of those infected by this variant to talk on it." West Bengal's COVID-19 tally rose to 5,38,343 on Monday as 1,515 more people tested positive for the infection, a health department bulletin said. Forty-one more patients succumbed to the disease, pushing the state's coronavirus death toll to 9,401, it added. (Photo Source: pixabay.com) <ul><li>Amid the outcry against budget airlines in India charging for online check-ins, state-owned <keyword id="6355455" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-railways">Indian Railways</keyword> took to Twitter to remind travellers of the benefits taking trains over flights including its free web check-in and cheaper tariffs. </li><li>It also highlighted that by using the railways, passengers can avoid “long queues” for baggage check-ins and reduce their carbon footprint </li><li>Since the backlash from flyers, IndiGo has released a clarification that the web check-in policy for the airlines has not been changed and the flyers can still pre-book seats as per the availability.</li></ul>Amid the outcry against budget airlines in India charging for online check-ins, state-owned Indian Railways took to Twitter to list the <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/infrastructure/railways/indian-railways-takes-witty-dig-at-indigo-other-airlines-over-web-checkin-lists-reasons-to-travel-by-trains/1394356/">benefits</a> of “good old railways” over taking flights such as its free web check-in, cheaper tariffs and lower carbon footprint. Recently, budget airlines IndiGo and Spicejet announced that they will begin charging for online check-in services that led to many flyers complaining on social media, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indian-government-to-review-indigo-spicejet-policies-to-charge-for-web-check-in-after-flyers-protest/articleshow/66805080.cms">prompting</a> even the Indian government to review the move. On Monday, the Indian Railways tweeted, “No need to pay extra charges for web check-ins. No long queues for checking in your luggage.  Since the backlash from flyers, IndiGo has issued a <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Companies/nZ7GK9IWW6M0sK990m2qYI/IndiGo-flights-web-checkin-free-seats-charges.html">clarification</a> that the web check-in policy for the airlines has not been changed and the flyers can still pre-book the free seats available during web check-in, if they have no specific preference. The price will only be applicable for selecting seats in advance. It had earlier said that its new policy went into effect in Mid-November. Airlines in India have been struggling of late because of higher fuel prices and rising operational costs, prompting many airlines to look at ways to cut costs or increase revenue. Indian Railways appears to be increasingly capitalising on the opportunity to woo airline passengers. Last week, it increased the number of coaches on trains between Mumbai and Delhi after a runway shut down at the Delhi airport, leading to escalating airline fares, PTI reported.
