<ul><li>A lot of <keyword id="5282715" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="spicejet-passengers" source="Orion">SpiceJet passengers</keyword> have been safe across five such incidents that happened in the last three months.</li><li>In the month of May, <keyword id="6358032" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="spicejet" source="Orion">SpiceJet</keyword> came in second in terms of flight cancellations, according to a report by regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).</li><li>SpiceJet also topped the list of airlines whose services are the most unsatisfactory, followed by Indigo, according to a recent LocalCircles survey.</li></ul>On July 2, a SpiceJet flight made an emergency landing in Delhi airport after smoke was discovered in the cabin as it was flying at an altitude of 5,000 feet. Yet, all its passengers were safe. “A SpiceJet aircraft operating from Delhi to Jabalpur returned safely to the Delhi airport today morning after the crew noticed smoke in the cabin while passing 5000ft; passengers safely disembarked,” a Spicejet spokesperson said. A lot of SpiceJet passengers have been safe across five such incidents that happened in the last three months. But the turbulent times that passengers faced, might keep them away from the third largest airline in the country. The notorious top spot is occupied by Gurugram-based Fly Big airline. SpiceJet also topped the list of airlines whose services are the most unsatisfactory, followed by Indigo, according to a recent LocalCircles survey. Airlines in general have been cutting corners and compromising on passenger comfort – said 79% of the Indian passengers polled. “On an aggregate basis, flight delays, inflight services, boarding and check-in procedures, baggage handling and timely information sharing among top issues Indian passengers face, with airlines,” said the LocalCircles report. And, 41% of the respondents said ‘flight delays’ as the foremost unsatisfactory factor, followed by poor aircraft interiors including seat, entertainment system for 28% of them. Two incidents were reported on June 19 — a Delhi-bound flight carrying over 185 passengers caught fire soon after take off from Patna airport and had to make an emergency landing. The airline clarified that a bird hit had damaged their fan blades. On the same day, another flight, the Bombardier Q400 Dash 8 plane from Delhi to Jabalpur, had to make an <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/explained/delhi-spicejet-flight-smoke-in-cabin-jabalpur-8004366/">emergency landing</a> in Delhi as the cabin pressure couldn’t be built up as the plane gained altitude. On May 4, a SpiceJet Boeing 737 MAX plane flying from Chennai to Durgapur had to turn back due to engine shut down mid-air. This had happened after an oil-filter warning had popped up. A few days before this, a lot of passengers were severely injured in a SpiceJet aircraft flying from Mumbai to Jabalpur due to severe turbulence before landing. SpiceJet’s safety is not the only problem, it’s cancellations and complaints are high too

In what could be called shocking days for Indian passengers who love travelling by air, <keyword id="6358032" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SpiceJet">SpiceJet</keyword> has followed the steps of IndiGo in raising cancellation charges on its air tickets. It has also decided to raise the rescheduling charges from April 7 onwards. 
	 

	For cancelling domestic tickets, passengers had to pay Rs 1,899, which has been raised to Rs 2,250; while for international tickets, this has been raised from Rs 2349 to Rs 2,500. 
	 

	As per travel agents, other airlines too are expected to follow suit. 
	 

	Directorate General of Civil Aviation had last year said that the sharp hike in ticket cancellation charges by airlines would be probed for being 'unreasonable'.

Another blow to Indian air travellers, SpiceJet raises cancellation and rescheduling charges

But, the seats will be assigned as per the availability. </li><li>The revised policy has been effective since 14 November and the seats will be charged according to flyer preferences, starting from ₹100 to ₹800. </li><li><keyword id="149609" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Civil-Aviation">Ministry of Civil Aviation</keyword> (MoCA) said that the charges will be reviewed under the pricing framework.</li></ul>The Indian government has said it will review the new charges for online check-ins announced by the country’s budget airlines IndiGo and Spicejet following social media complaints by several flyers.  Earlier, in case of web check -ins, the airlines charged extra only for certain seats such as the ones along the aisle, window-facing or the seats with additional legroom. The charges for lowest seats in IndiGo and Spicejet are ₹100 and ₹99, respectively. IndiGo <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/business/indigo-to-charge-for-web-check-in-of-all-seats#gs.npT1Cys">reportedly</a> said that the revised policy has been effective since 14 November and the seats will be charged according to the flyer preferences, starting from ₹100 to ₹800. According to the revised policy, a first row seat will be charged ₹800 extra, while a non-reclining seat next to the emergency exit will cost ₹600 more and a middle seat in the last row will cost an additional ₹100 if booked online. IndiGo said that the changes have been inline with the consumer preferences, for the advanced selection of seats. Indian government to review IndiGo, Spicejet policies to charge for web check-in after flyers protest

Mumbai, Apr 14 () With the central government extending the lockdown to May 3 and subsequently the suspension of all commercial passenger services also till then, domestic airlines have again decided not to refund the customers in cash for their cancelled flights and instead offer them rescheduling of tickets for a later date without any additional fee.India had imposed a 21-day lockdown from March 25 to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Consequently, all domestic and international commercial passenger flights were suspended for this time period.However, most of the airlines had been taking bookings except national carrier Air India for domestic flights for the period beyond April 14.After Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the extension of lockdown till May 3, the aviation regulator DGCA issued a circular stating all international as well as domestic flights will remain suspended during the lockdown."Following orders from the Ministry of Civil Aviation issued to all airlines, we have extended the suspension of our operations until May 3, 2020."We are in the process of cancelling the affected bookings and we will offer customers free of charge rescheduling to another date until December 31, 2020," a Vistara spokesperson told in statement.The customer, however, will have to pay the fare difference, if any, at the time of rebooking, the airline said.A GoAir spokesperson said that it has already "factored in" these type of scenario and that the airline will review its earlier scheme of providing rescheduling free of cost at a later date while protecting their existing bookings for one year.The airline had on Monday announced that it was extending the "Protect Your PNR" scheme till April 30, 2020.Aviation consultancy Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation had last week termed the sale of tickets without a clarity on lockdown as "unfair to consumers"."The decision to allow opening of advance bookings from April 14 without a decision on lifting of the lockdown and likely structure of the transition period post the lockdown needs to be immediately reviewed as this is unfair to consumers," Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) said in a statement.Citing examples of erstwhile Kingfisher Airlines and now-defunct Jet Airways, CAPA said that the closure of these two carriers has "already resulted in massive losses to passengers as refunds couldn't be processed resulting in crores of losses to passengers".It may be mentioned here that the then customers of the erstwhile Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways could not recover their money which the two airlines had amassed on account of advance bookings only after their going belly up.CAPA in its March 18 report had stated that amid COVID-19 and in the absence of government support "several Indian airlines may shut down operations by May or June due to a lack of cash."Announcing that all its flights are cancelled till May 3, IndiGo said, it is in the process of cancelling the reservations."Your ticket amount is protected in the form of credit shell in the PNR, which can be utilised within one year of the issued date." Airlines decline refund to customers for cancelled tickets as lockdown extended

New Delhi/ Mumbai, Mar 12 () Hundreds of cancelled flights, decline in daily ticket bookings, fall in footfalls at airport shops and spike in expenses continue to rattle the country's aviation space as airlines, with weakened financials, and airport operators grapple with coronavirus headwinds.With mounting travel restrictions across the world, including in India, the tailwind of sharp plunge in crude oil prices seems to fade in the background of excess seat and fleet capacity in the airline industry, according to experts.More than 490 flights operated by foreign carriers to and from India have been cancelled for varying periods of time while the count of weekly flights cancelled by domestic airlines is more than 90, as per official data. The number of cancelled flights on international routes is expected to rise as India has also suspended all visas, except a few categories such as diplomatic and employment, till April 15 as part of efforts to curb spreading of coronavirus infections.Data shared by aviation consultancy CAPA showed that capacity or the number of seats available weekly on various international flight routes connecting India has significantly come down for the week that started on March 9 compared to the situation in December last year. Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the number of international passengers arriving at the country's airports has come down to around 62,000 per day from 70,000 in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.According to him, the count might further come down to around 40,000 following the travel advisory issued on Wednesday. There are 30 international airports in the country. From being "nimble in approach" to adverse impact on quarterly earnings, domestic carriers have already flagged their concerns about coronavirus impact on their businesses. The Association of Private Airport Operators (APAO) has flagged various problems in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, including that of "less sales at the Food and Beverage, and retail outlets" at aerodromes. In a letter to the civil aviation ministry on Wednesday, the grouping also said airport operators are now required to significantly beef up manpower deployment as well as make expenditure on items like masks, sanitisers and floor cleaners, in order to ensure compliance with various government advisories. Further, APAO has sought approval for "levying of a nominal passenger facilitation charge as part of airline fares to cover increased operating expenses being incurred by the operators", as per the letter. It has also sought provisioning of an "airport operator alleviation package by AERA to facilitate the growing operational expenses". Regulator AERA fixes tariffs for certain categories of airports. Referring to the government's decision to suspend visas from March 13 till April 15, CAPA said the ban would cripple the aviation industry with very serious impact on airlines with weaker balance sheet. Overall, it would be a "serious blow" to the aviation industry, CAPA CEO (South Asia) Kapil Kaul told .Peak travel period, which generally starts from April, would be impacted. A senior airline industry official said domestic air traffic might start increasing as the people who had planned their vacations abroad could visit domestic destinations. Full service carrier Vistara, on Thursday, said business on some of its international and domestic routes has been impacted by coronavirus outbreak. "At Vistara, we are reviewing the situation everyday and remain nimble in our approach," an airline spokesperson said. On Wednesday, the country's largest airline IndiGo said it was expecting quarterly earnings to be adversely impacted as daily bookings have declined 15-20 per cent in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. The airline has also suspended Staff Leisure Travel (SLT) to certain countries, including China, Singapore and Hong Kong. SpiceJet Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh said the aviation sector is under a lot of pressure but that was "temporary". I firmly believe that this is an opportunity for SpiceJet, for the government and the aviation ecosystem to create more efficient and viable structures for the growth that lies ahead. The decision is significant as India’s <keyword id="6368649" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="civil-aviation">civil aviation</keyword> authorities appear to be taking note and acting on flyer complaints about unwarranted cancellations. In 2016, Indian civil aviation regulator, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), issued <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/airlines-/-aviation/airlines-to-pay-huge-compensation-for-flight-cancellation-or-denying-boarding-to-flier/articleshow/53254485.cms">guidelines</a> on cancellation and denying boarding by airlines saying that the airlines will have to provide compensation to the flyer in such cases. According to the norms then formulated, airlines are supposed to pay a compensation of up to ₹20,000 in case of refused boarding while for a cancelled or delayed flight, the airline is bound to pay up to ₹10,000 to the flyer. <ul><li>According to data from the Directorate General of Civil <keyword id="31907" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aviation">Aviation</keyword> (DGCA), Indian passengers have taken more international flights than domestic, with the rate of growth for overseas travel at 12.8% in November. </li><li>This is for the first time in over a year that the number of international passengers surpassed domestic ones. </li><li>The report has also shown that the domestic airlines recorded 786 passenger related complaints with <keyword id="2573" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-India">Air India</keyword> having the maximum share at 247.</li></ul>India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) recently revealed numbers on air traffic — domestic and international for the month of November. According to the stats, for the month of November, Indian passengers took more international flights than domestic. This is for the first time in 15 months that the number of international passengers surpassed domestic ones, with international passenger traffic growing by <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/charts/overseas-air-travel-outpaces-domestic-traffic-first-time-in-15-months">12.8%</a> compared to previous month. On the other hand, <a href="http://dgca.nic.in/reports/Traffic-ind.htm">domestic air passenger traffic</a> rose by nearly 11% for the month compared to previous month accounting to 11.64 million, which was the lowest over the last four years. For the eleven months until November, the domestic airlines registered a year-on-year growth of 19.21%. Overall, the domestic air passenger traffic was the lowest in the fourth quarter in 2018. Airlines in India have been pushing consumer-friendly app bookings and various discounts on their domestic and international flights to attract flyers. The DGCA report also highlighted cancellations and delays pertaining to the number of passengers booking air travel in India. The state-owned national carrier Air India made maximum number of cancellations on domestic routes at 2.74% while <keyword id="2467342" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vistara">Vistara</keyword> made the least number of cancellations at the rate of 0.15%. India’s domestic airlines recorded 786 passenger-related complaints, with Air India seeing the maximum share at 247, said the report. Separately, India’s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indias-consumer-court-has-begun-cracking-down-on-budget-airlines-denying-boarding-to-passengers/articleshow/67020649.cms">consumer court</a> has also started enforcing strict rules for the aviation industry. It recently asked the budget carrier, <keyword id="6354706" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IndiGo">IndiGo</keyword>, to refund the total flight costs along with a compensation for denying boarding of a passenger with no valid reason. More Indians flew overseas than on domestic routes in November: Report

If you have been waiting for some monsoon bonanza to book flight tickets for the festive season in the month of October and December chances seem to be quite tighter this time. As per a news report in The Economic Times, all aisle and window seats on <keyword id="6354706" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indigo">IndiGo</keyword> flights will cost more, if pre-booked. DGCA has given nod to airlines to pre-book all seats earlier. 
 
While booking a seat in the front or emergency rows will cost Rs 600 , window and aisle seats in rows 2 to 11 will cost Rs 300 each. However, Indigo is already charging Rs 200 extra for aisle and window seats of rows 14 to 29. 
 If this wasn’t a shocker enough, cancellation charges have also been hiked. While IndiGo earlier had a flat fee of Rs 1,500 for cancellations made up to two hours prior to departure time, it now has four slabs. People cancelling two to 48 hours before departure will have to pay Rs 2,250. The fee will be Rs 2,000; 1,500 and 1,250 for cancellations made 48 hours, seven to <keyword id="819339" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="30-days">30 days</keyword> and more than 30 days before departure time, respectively, according to the ET report. 
 
Also, Spicejet passengers can get special services like assistance from check-in to boarding and likewise on arrival; priority check-in at special counters; getting checked-in bags at priority and insurance for baggage loss for an extra fee.
