Perth: (The Conversation) Last week, three tiny Australian satellites from Curtin University's <keyword id="23932163" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Binar-Space-Program" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Binar Space Program" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Binar Space Program">Binar Space Program</keyword> burned up in Earth's atmosphere. That was always going to happen. In fact, Binar means "fireball" in the Noongar language of the First Nations people of Perth. When a satellite is in low Earth orbit (2,000km or less), it experiences orbital decay as it drags closer and closer to the surface, eventually burning up. But these cube satellites (<keyword id="21533654" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CubeSats" source="keywords">CubeSats</keyword>), known as Binar-2, 3 and 4, entered the atmosphere much sooner than originally planned. They only lasted for two months - a third of what was expected. This significantly reduced valuable time for science and testing new systems. The reason for their untimely demise? Our Sun has kicked into high gear, and the Binar satellites are far from the only casualty. Recent high <keyword id="20792842" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Solar-activity" source="keywords">solar activity</keyword> has been causing an unexpected headache for satellite operators in the last few years, and it's only increasing. <h2>Why is the Sun so active? </h2> Solar activity includes phenomena such as sunspots, solar flares and solar wind - the stream of charged particles that flows toward Earth. This activity is a product of the Sun's ever-changing magnetic field, and approximately every 11 years, it completely flips. At the midpoint of this cycle, solar activity is at its highest. While this cycle is known, specific solar activity is challenging to predict - the dynamics are complex and solar forecasting is in its infancy. In the last few months, indicators of solar activity were more than one and a half times higher than predictions for this point in the current cycle, labelled <keyword id="22712826" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="solar-cycle-25" source="keywords">solar cycle 25</keyword>. <h2>The impact of <keyword id="20087207" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-weather" source="keywords">space weather</keyword> </h2> Space weather refers to the environmental effects that originate from outside our atmosphere (mostly the Sun). It affects us on Earth in a variety of noticeable and unnoticeable ways. The most obvious is the presence of auroras. In the past few months, auroras have been visible far more intensely and closer to the equator than in the last two decades. This is a direct result of the increased solar activity. Space weather, and solar activity in particular, also creates additional challenges for satellites and satellite operators. Higher solar activity means more solar flares and stronger solar wind - resulting in a higher flux of charged particles that can damage or disrupt electrical components on satellites. It also means an increase in ionising radiation, resulting in a higher dose for astronauts and pilots, and potential disruptions to long-distance radio communications. But for satellites in low Earth orbit, the most consistent effect of solar activity is that the extra energy gets absorbed into the outer atmosphere, causing it to balloon outward. As a result, all satellites less than 1,000km from Earth experience a significant increase in <keyword id="23473319" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="atmospheric-drag" source="keywords">atmospheric drag</keyword>. This is a force that disrupts their orbit and causes them to fall towards the planet's surface. Notable satellites in this region include the International Space Station and the Starlink constellation. These satellites have thrusters to counteract this effect, but these corrections can be expensive. Low Earth orbit also contains many university satellites, such as the Binar CubeSats. Cube satellites are rarely equipped with tools that can adjust their altitude, so they're entirely at the mercy of space weather. <h2>What happened to Binar? </h2> The Binar Space Program is a satellite research program operating out of Curtin University. It aims to advance our understanding of the Solar System and lower the barrier for operating in space. The program began operations with its first satellite, Binar-1, in September 2021. This was less than a year into solar cycle 25 when solar activity was relatively low. In these conditions, the ten-centimetre cube satellite started at an altitude of 420km and survived a full 364 days in orbit. The program's follow-up mission - Binar-2, 3, and 4 - were three equally sized CubeSats. However, they were expected to last approximately six months owing to the extra surface area from new deployable solar arrays and a forecast increase in solar activity. Instead, they only made it to two months before burning up. While cube satellite missions are relatively cheap, the premature ending of a mission will always be costly. This is even more true for commercial satellites, highlighting the need for more accurate space weather forecasting. The good news is the Sun will calm down again. Despite the current unexpectedly high solar activity, it will likely slow down by 2026, and is expected to return to a solar minimum in 2030. While this was not an explicit goal of the mission, the Binar Space Program has now poignantly demonstrated the dramatic effects of solar activity on space operations. While the untimely loss of Binar-2, 3 and 4 was unfortunate, work has already begun on future missions. They are expected to launch into far more forgiving space weather. (The Conversation).

<ul class="summary-list"><li>China is intensifying its bid to supplant the US as a major space power. </li><li>It is "moving at breathtaking speed," according to the US Space Force commander.</li></ul>After a meeting with Japanese and South Korean officials in Tokyo on Friday, US Space Force commander Gen. Stephen Whiting warned about a growing threat.China, he said, is "moving at breathtaking speed in space," and is developing a range of weapons that threaten America's space supremacy, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.stripes.com/branches/space_force/2024-04-25/space-force-china-japan-korea-13651897.html">reported Stars and Stripes.</a>"They're also using space to make their terrestrial forces — their army, their navy, their marine corps, their air force — more precise, more lethal, and more far-ranging," he added. It's one of a series of warnings from top US military officials in recent months about the growing threat in space posed by China.There is a very real risk, they say, that the US could soon lose its status as the world's dominant space power."We are at a pivotal moment in history," Troy Meink, principal deputy director of the National Reconnaissance Office, which builds and operates the US fleet of spy satellites, said at a recent event in Colorado, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.space.com/china-space-progress-breathtaking-speed-space-force">as quoted by Space.com.</a>"For the first time in decades, US leadership in space and space technology is being challenged," Meink added. "Our competitors are actively seeking ways to threaten our capabilities, and we see this every day."They echo comments by Gen. Chance Saltzman, chief of space operations at the United States Space Force, who <a target="_blank" href="https://www.spaceforce.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/3368200/complacency-must-be-avoided-to-maintain-us-superiority-in-space-saltzman-says/">last year </a>warned against taking US space supremacy for granted."I'm worried about a far more subtle form of complacency. One that grows out of the comfort of continuity, the comfort of our expertise, the comfort of our successes. What we have done and how we have done it has worked and worked well, but I fear we think it will work well forever," he said.Space today is "far more contested and US access to space capabilities is not a given," Saltzman said.<h2>US satellites under threat</h2>In recent years, China has developed a sophisticated military program in space, where for decades, the US has been the dominant force.Space is where military analysts believe the first shots could be fired in a war between major powers.China has created technology capable of targeting US satellites, as well as for better monitoring Earth and developing coordination between land, sea, air, and space operations.At a congressional hearing in February, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-02-29/us-sees-china-s-threat-from-space-growing-at-breathtaking-pace">Whiting said</a> that China is also developing a "hypersonic glide vehicle" and other weapons capable of evading air defense systems and satellite warnings.Dominic Chiu, an analyst with the Eurasia Group, told Business Insider that plans for space warfare were at the heart of China's recent military reorganization."China's leadership believes elements such as space and cyber will play a bigger role, and that making them more operationally efficient is crucial to preparedness and success," he said.<div type="image" title="Air Force Lieutenant General Gregory Guillot (left) and US Space Force Lieutenant General Stephen Whiting (right) on July 26, 2023." height="683" width="1024" msid="109732329" hostid="261"></div>The plans place China's aerospace units directly under the control of central command and mirror the US' creation of a Space Force under former President Donald Trump in 2018, said Chiu.One of the main fronts in the rivalry is the race to the moon, and US officials are warning that China, under the guise of scientific research, could be planning on seizing control of regions of the lunar surface as part of its plans for military dominance.With the Artemis mission, the US is planning on sending astronauts to the moon for the first time in 50 years. But China has its own moon landing program, and US lawmakers at a congressional hearing in<a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/01/17/artemis-china-delay-competition/"> January warned that</a> delays to NASA's plans to get astronauts to the lunar surface by 2022 mean that China could get there first."The country that lands first will have the ability to set a precedent for whether future lunar activities are conducted with openness and transparency or in a more restricted manner," said Rep. Frank Lucas, chairman of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee.Brig. Gen. Anthony Mastalir, commander of US Space Forces Indo-Pacific,<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-could-attack-us-satellites-from-moon-warns-general-2024-3"> told a conference in March</a> that China could be planning to use its presence on the moon as part of covert plans to target US satellites."As in other domains, the US is the established power, and China is seeking to catch and, if possible, overtake it, using its race to the moon to increase funding," Graeme Thompson, an analyst at the Eurasia Group, told BI.<h2>The US and allies monitor 'deep space' for threats</h2>The US and its allies are responding to the threat by developing plans to monitor areas of space that China is seeking to dominate for potential threats.In December, the AUKUS alliance, which comprises the US, Australia, and the UK, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-67603379">said it would </a>develop radars to monitor threats in "deep space," around 22,000 miles from Earth."Both the US and China view outer space along with cyberspace as new and interlinked military domains, and both feature in US, UK, and Australian collaboration under the AUKUS agreement," said Thompson.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/national-security/china-challenging-us-militarys-dominance-space-rcna128993">According to reports, </a>the Pentagon is intensifying its bid to develop technology capable of countering China's plans to take out US satellites.Tory Bruno, chief executive of United Launch Alliance, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/national-security/china-challenging-us-militarys-dominance-space-rcna128993">told NBC News </a>that engineers are developing maneuverable satellites that could move out of the way of Chinese satellites that are fitted with robotic arms to take them out of orbit.The stakes in the race for the dominance of space could not be higher, say experts. Whoever wins will not just have control over the moon, but will likely be the top power on Earth. And through complacency, America may fast lose its advantage, say critics."The truth is, whoever controls the space domain will dominate the future global economy," wrote analyst Arthur Herman for the conservative-leaning Hudson Institute in February."If America was the preeminent space power from Presidents John F. Kennedy to Ronald Reagan, we've let our edge slip away, while China and Russia aim to displace us all together."

China's plan to be the dominant power in space is moving at breathtaking speed. The US needs to wake up, officials say.

The crew and rocket remain safe and more information will be forthcoming." It said that NASA astronauts Wilmore and Williams exited the Starliner spacecraft at Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida and will return to astronaut crew quarters. This would have marked the first human crewed flight for Starliner with Indian origin Sunita "Suni" Williams piloting the craft with fellow NASA pilot Barry "Butch" Wilmore. Boing had designed Starliner to rival the Dragon capsule of Elon Musk's SpaceX which carried out its crewed flight test in May 2020. SpaceX has handled most of NASA's crew transportation needs since then. The Atlas 5 rocket, renowned for its reliability, stood ready for its milestone 100th flight - to launch Boeing's Crew Space Transportation (CST)-100 Starliner spacecraft. The plan was that following separation from Atlas 5, Starliner engines will burn taking it the rest of the way to orbit and on to the International Space Station, according to ULA. The Atlas 5 had successfully launching scientific spacecraft to Mars on five different occasions, plus research investigations to the Sun, the Moon, Jupiter, the Asteroid Bennu and Pluto The Atlas 5 consists of two major components: a booster and Centaur, its so-called upper stage. Starliner sits on top of Centaur, which in turn rests on the booster. The booster powers everything off the launchpad. During the flight, Centaur is designed to separate from the booster, propelling Starliner into a proper orbit. Then, Starliner separates from Centaur and flies on its own. It has delivered US national security assets into space, launched weather observatories that all Americans depend upon and deployed commercial satellites to connect the world. Williams, selected as an astronaut by NASA in June 1998, has spent a total of 322 days in space on two missions and accumulated 50 hours and 40 minutes of cumulative EVA time on seven spacewalks. Williams worked with Roscosmos on its contribution to the space station and with the first Expedition crew. Meanwhile, 61-year-old, Wilmore has logged 178 days in space and has 25 hours and 36 minutes of time on four spacewalks. NASA has been waiting half a decade for Starliner to begin flying crew, and the development of Starliner was beset by years of delays, setbacks and blunders. More broadly, Boeing as a company has suffered years of scandals in its aircraft division that have tarnished the legacy aerospace giant's brand, CNN reported. If successful, the Crew Test Flight could queue up Boeing to begin flying routine trips to the space station on NASA's behalf. Boeing has already planned six manned missions for the platform over the next six years, the projected end of the ISS' operating lifespan. NASA plans to use both SpaceX's Dragon and Boeing's Starliner to send up astronauts at least every six months from US soil. Software engineers (robots, spacecrafts, etc.)</h2>Hands down, software engineering is one of the most important and promising career fields in the space economy, both now and in the future, according to Anderson — and you don't have to be an expert in rockets to be a developer at a space company."Everything is about software nowadays," he said. "Whether it's converting satellite data into new uses here on Earth, designing the next breakthrough rocket system, or building lunar landers and Martian life support systems — this is such a vast field, and it's full of exciting challenges and opportunities."<h2 id="1e58e739-8e8f-4e68-9140-e38eece87ad2">2. Direct-to-cellular engineers</h2>Direct-to-cellular radio frequency engineers are now in high demand, and Anderson said that the future looks "extremely bright" for this profession. He believes they'll play a critical role in the future of communications, the internet, and all technologies that rely on these connections."We're on the verge of a major change in telecommunications as satellites go direct to cellular instead of connecting through cell towers," Anderson explained. "Unfortunately, the hurricane season is not over until November 30th, so I cannot say that this is the last one," he said.

Unfortunately, the joy only lasted a month when imaging of one of my lymph nodes came back with shadows. For the next year and a half, the same lymph node was flagged as suspicious, leaving me in a constant state of limbo.On July 13, 2021, after my sixth-month scan, I was told I was in remission again. The lymph node still showed shadows, but the doctors were confident. They'd compared my last three scans and concluded there were no changes, which meant I was stable. Still, I couldn't shake the lingering doubt. My life had been paused for so long, and I was afraid to press play again. My doctor scheduled another scan that November, just to be sure.<h2 id="c114f25e-c02a-43b6-9b31-b4813767e88f">Learning I was cancer-free opened up a world of possibilities</h2>I'll never forget the morning of that scan. Driving to the hospital, my heart was pounding and my mind full of anxious thoughts. I had a full-blown <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/mental-health/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack">anxiety attack</a> on the phone with my mom before my scan, praying that the one remaining lymph node would finally be clear.A week later, just before Thanksgiving, I sat in my doctor's office, awaiting the news. My doctor, the one who had walked alongside me for five years and listened to my dreams of one day having a family, came in smiling. Her first words: "When are we going to start <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/reproductive-health/how-to-get-pregnant">trying for babies</a>?"After everything, it was finally real. The lymph node that had caused me so much anxiety — the last holdout — was clear. I was truly in remission, and my life, which had felt like it was on hold for so long, was finally beginning.Almost a year later, I had what I thought was the stomach flu, but something inside told me this was different. The Starliner with flight commander Barry "Butch" Wilmore and flight pilot Sunita "Suni" Williams onboard was launched from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Cape Canaveral, Florida on June 5. The Starliner arrived at the ISS on June 6. The mission is part of the larger Commercial Crew Program at NASA, which wanted to see whether Boeing's spacecraft could be certified to carry out routine missions to and from the ISS. Boeing and NASA have said the crew is currently not in danger as they are aboard the ISS with plenty of supplies in orbit and the schedule of the station is relatively open through mid-August. NASA and Boeing said Wilmore and Williams are "integrated" with the Expedition 71 crew aboard the ISS and are assisting the crew with operations of the station as needed and completing "objectives" required for NASA's possible certification of Starliner, ABC News reported. In a statement, Mark Nappi, vice president and program manager of Boeing's Starliner program, said, "The crew's feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and they know that every bit of learning we do on the Crew Flight Test will improve and sharpen our experience for future crews." Starliner has faced several issues, even before launch. The flight test was originally tentatively scheduled for May 6. However, it was delayed after a problem with an oxygen valve on a rocket from United Launch Alliance (ULA), which makes and operates the rockets that launch spacecraft into orbit. The launch date was later set for May 25. However, a small helium leak was found in the service module, which comprises support systems and instruments for operating a spacecraft, ABC News reported. Helium leaks and a thruster issue then threatened to delay the docking of Starliner. After docking at the ISS for five days, NASA and Boeing said the spacecraft was experiencing five "small" helium leaks. At the time, NASA and Boeing said enough helium was available for the return mission.
