<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The constant changes in opiate smuggling routes from Afghanistan and the fact that Afghan heroin may be reaching new markets point to a new obstacle for law enforcement: the dark net, <a href="https://www.unodc.org/documents/wdr2015/World_Drug_Report_2015.pdf">according to the World Drug Report</a>.</span></p><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">This place on the internet, which allows buyers to access drugs easily and anonymously is proving to be a new driving force in drug trafficking.</span></p><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Alongside changes in different drug trafficking routes, such as the one used to to smuggle opiates from Afghanistan through Pakistan into South Asia and through Iran into Europe, the World Drug report also found evidence that criminal groups are diversifying the kinds of drugs they are focusing on. </span></p><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The interest in cannabis resin and methamphetamine has been growing and routes normally used for just one type of drug now host a few. </span></p><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Changes in the kind of drugs being smuggled through specific countries are also changing. African countries, which are traditionally used as transit hubs for heroin and cocaine are now also used for other drugs.</span></p><h2 class="p2"><span class="s1"><strong>Cocaine</strong></span></h2><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Cocaine, which is almost exclusively cultivated in South America, is mostly smuggled through Africa or the Caribbean before reaching Europe. Eastern Europe is also starting to become a transit area, and although quantities remain small it could show a movement in the cocaine markets. Costa Rica also reported that it is now both a transit and temporary storage country.</span></p><p class="p2"><span class="s1">Cocaine use continues to be on the decline in Western and Central Europe and North America and the cocoa bush cultivation is at its lowest since the mid 80's, according to the report.</span></p><h2 class="p2"><span class="s1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Heroin</span></h2><p class="p1"><span class="s1">Increased seizures of heroin, particularly in East Africa, point to Africa's role for the smuggling of Afghan heroin into Europe has become more and more important. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">Recent seizures also suggest that large shipments of Afghan heroin are smuggled across the Indian Ocean and into East and Southern Africa. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">In Canada, the quasi totality of heroin comes from Afghanistan. Although the United States's heroin supplies mostly come from Central and South America, things might start changing as fluctuations in the Australian market between heroin originating from Myanmar and Afghanistan point to the fact that criminal networks are increasingly global. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">The report notes that there are also indications of increased trafficking in South and South East Asia and West and East Africa and the "Balkan route" through Iran and Turkey to Europe, the "northern route" through Central Asia to Russia and the "southern route" through Iran or Pakistan to Asia are all established trafficking routes of Afghan opiates.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><strong style="font-size: 1.5em; color: #000000;">Methamphetamine</strong></span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">East and South East Asia and Oceania are emerging as global market for ecstasy while the market declines in America and significant seizures over the past five years show that new trafficking routes are emerging. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">The market for methamphetamine is expanding in East and South East Asia and the use of crystal meth is increasing in North America and Europe. The dark net might be changing drug smuggling routes

The <keyword id="43588" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-health-organization" source="Orion">World Health Organization</keyword> and its member states in the South-East Asia Region and across the world marked the second Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action on Thursday.<br /><br />Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women with an estimated 604,000 new cases and 342,000 deaths in 2020, of which the <keyword id="2078757" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="south-east-region" source="Orion">South East Region</keyword> accounted for 32 per cent and 34 per cent, respectively, said Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia.<br /><br />"Vaccination of girls against human papillomavirus (<keyword id="102327" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="hpv" source="Orion">HPV</keyword>), screening and treatment of pre-cancer lesions, and improved access to diagnosis and treatment of invasive cancers are critical, cost-effective measures that policymakers should urgently apply to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem," WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia said on the occasion.<br /><br />Dr Singh said that the countries of the region continue to make steady and sustained progress against cervical cancer, in line with the Region's Flagship Priority on preventing and controlling non-communicable diseases, as well as the 2021 Regional Implementation Framework on eliminating cervical cancer as a public health problem.<br /><br />"Five Member States - Bhutan, Maldives, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand - have introduced nation-wide HPV vaccination, which Bangladesh, India and Timor-Leste will soon also introduce. Cervical cancer 4th most common among women, policymakers should urgently move to eliminate: WHO

New Delhi, Nov 28 () Hospitality major InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) on Thursday announced the appointment of Sudeep Jain as Managing Director, South West Asia with effect from January 1, 2020.
<p> Sudeep is currently serving as VP Development, South West Asia (SWA) and succeeds Vivek Bhalla, who has been promoted to the role of Vice President Operations for South East Asia and Korea, IHG said in a statement.
</p><p> In his new role, Sudeep will take on a broader leadership agenda to drive IHG's business in the region, covering both development and operations responsibilities across the existing portfolio of 39 hotels representing five brands -- InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express and Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas, it added.
</p><p> Sudeep will continue to be based in Gurugram, and will report to Pascal Gauvin, Managing Director, India, Middle East and Africa, IHG, the statement said.
</p><p> Commenting on the development, Gauvin said: "Since joining IHG, he (Sudeep) has led our growth agenda in the market, successfully positioning IHG as one of the leading hospitality companies in SWA, especially in India."
</p><p> Sudeep brings close to two decades of experience in the hospitality sector from roles based in the US and India, working across brand management, asset management, strategy, planning and real estate development, the statement said.

<p>The WHO regions (as shown on the chart below from left to right) are: African region, region of the Americas, Eastern Mediterranean region, European region, South-East Asia region, and Western Pacific region.</p>

<p>Americans love beer, as do our neighbors to the north and south. Unsurprisingly, wine is more popular in Europe than in any other region. Hardly anyone in the South-East Asia region drinks wine - 77.3% of the alcohol consumed there in 2010 was spirits. The Western Pacific region also favors spirits.</p>

For a company that started its journey two years back when there was no backpacking culture in India, would it be surprising if we tell you <keyword id="2232457" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Zostel">Zostel</keyword> – the only established hostel chain for travel freaks - is now gung-ho on its plans to move into South East Asian and European markets. They already have one hostel running in <keyword id="13486" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vietnam">Vietnam</keyword>, and the aim is to run hostels in Barcelona, Puerto and Sri Lanka in the next three months.<br />

It’s not that one doesn’t expect such a mammoth step from a relatively new company present in a space that the Indian market may be not fully prepared for. But it irks a bit to think how Zostel is expanding outside without having made inroads into the Indian market fully.<br />

When it came into the picture in August 2013, Zostel followed an operation heavy model where it would lease properties and run them as its own. In March this year, they shifted to a franchise model. Under what they called <a href="http://www.zostel.com/beyou/">‘Zostel Entrepreneurship Development Programme’</a>, the company invited people who wanted to run their own hostels. It was a one-of-its-kind initiative to aid aspiring entrepreneurs to start their own Zostels with the performance linked seed amount of Rs 10 lakhs. Its funda was simple – “you do the investment and run the property as per Zostel’s specifications, we will take care of your sales, marketing, branding and technology support to help you get backpackers”. In return, it charged 15 per cent commission on each booking made from its platform — both app and website — and a monthly marketing fee. As a part of instilling trust in people, Zostel also decided to go ‘public’ with sensitive information about its business and operations like capital expenditure requirements and breakup of the same on per bed basis for setting up a backpacker hostel, operational expenditure requirements, revenue, expenses and profit margin of the company as well as occupancy in last few months.<br />

The offer attracted 2,000 applications from across the world out of which Zostel has decided to go ahead with nearly 60 of them. One was from Vietnam where the company has already begun running its first international hostel in Dalat. Now it has decided to stray into Barcelona, Puerto and Sri Lanka because they received applications from there too. This is not to say that there are no further plans for India though. Only last month, the company announced the launch of four hostels across India in Jaisalmer, Pushkar, Rishikesh and Goa taking its total properties in India to 11. Khajuraho, Jaipur, Mysore, Otty, Manali, Spiti, Leh, Puri, Kochi are many other places that will soon get come under Zostel’s net.<br />

But we still asked if Zostel finds international markets more benefitable than Indian market and whether they feel the home market is not ready for the famous western concept of backpacking yet? One of its co-founder said: “No that’s not that case.”<br />

“When we started out in 2013, 90 percent of our customers were foreigners and 10 per cent were Indians. It’s now 65 per cent foreigners and 30 per cent Indians. So, Zostel created the market that did not exist in India. Yes, we are slightly ahead of the curve and would shape a better market in India in the coming years,” said Akhil Malik.<br />

“We are focusing on growing the Zostel network to 25 properties across national and international destinations by the year end. Our vision is to emerge as the largest youth brand with our footprints all over the globe,” the Zostel Hospitality co-founder said.<br />
<br /> As it goes big, there is hardly any investment the company is making in marketing. <keyword id="6583342" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="backpackers">Backpackers</keyword> move in groups and are well connected and by giving them good services at affordable rates, Zostel claims, it has been able to come this far. And that’s how it will move forward too.<br />
<br /> The new Zostel properties are being established under the Zostel <keyword id="107737" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Entrepreneurship">Entrepreneurship</keyword> Development Programme. Currently, over 20,000 backpackers stay in Zostels every month. The company offers travelers rooms (women-only dorm, mixed dorm, private rooms) at budgets of Rs 500 a day, and offer services like laundry, access to internet, library, board games and other interactive facilities. It is in the process of launching a one-of-its-kind backpacker app that will tap into this community to share relevant information for the backpacking ecosystem.<br />

Exclusive: Zostel eyes South East Asia and European markets while expanding in India

Technology services major <keyword id="10863" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Capgemini" source="Orion">Capgemini</keyword> on Monday said it has acquired <keyword id="13946781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chappuis-Halder" source="Orion">Chappuis Halder</keyword> &amp; Cie (Chappuis Halder), a global strategy and management consulting firm, for an undisclosed sum.<br /><br />Headquartered in Luxembourg in Europe, Chappuis Halder is a nearly 150-people consulting firm, with main offices in North America, Europe, and South-East Asia, with reputation for its financial services leading expertise.<br /><br />With Chappuis Halder's specific industry focus, the acquisition will help Capgemini strengthen its capabilities to advise banking, wealth management and insurance clients in North America, Europe and South-East Asia, the company said in a statement.<br /><br />"Chappuis Halder's addition will contribute further to our in-depth expertise of Financial Services, a key condition to be able to advise and help our clients in the industry with their business transformation," said Anirban Bose, CEO of Capgemini's Financial Services Strategic Business Unit.<br /><br />The transaction is expected to be completed within the coming months.<br /><br />The acquisition will also help Capgemini's in-demand specialist consulting services in environment, social and governance (ESG) and climate risk strategy.<br /><br />"We are looking forward to being part of the Capgemini Group and to bringing our capabilities in helping clients in the financial services sector," said Stephane Eyraud, CEO and Founder of Chappuis Halder.<br /><br />Capgemini is a diverse organisation with more than 340,000 team members in more than 50 countries. Technology services major Capgemini buys Chappuis Halder to boost financial services business

<keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> made "strong progress" in the fight against malaria, recording the largest reduction in cases in South-East Asia from 20 million in 2000 to about 5.6 million last year, <keyword id="2555741" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-World-Health-Organisation">the World Health Organisation</keyword> (WHO) has said. <br /><br /><keyword id="10359478" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-world-malaria-report">The World Malaria Report</keyword> 2020, released Monday, said that in 2019, malaria cases globally numbered about 229 million, an annual estimate that has remained virtually unchanged over the last four years. <br /><br /> Last year, the disease claimed about 409,000 lives, compared to 411,000 in 2018. <br /><br />"Countries in South-East Asia made particularly strong progress, with reductions in cases and deaths of 73 per cent and 74 per cent, respectively. India records the largest reduction in malaria cases in SE Asia between 2000-2019: WHO

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Airline-ranking company Skytrax has revealed its Top 20 best carriers in the world for 2022.</li><li>For the seventh time, Qatar Airways has taken the top spot, beating out Singapore Airlines and Emirates.</li></ul><p>In one of the most-watched lists of the world's best airlines, not a single US carrier made the Top 20.</p><p>Instead, airline-ranking company <a href="https://skytraxratings.com/qatar-airways-is-named-the-worlds-best-airline-for-seventh-time-at-2022-world-airline-awards">Skytrax again named</a> Doha-based Qatar Airways at the top of its World Airline Awards for 2022, where it's been perched since 2019.</p><p>The Top 20 list was collected from customer surveys, which are "independent and impartial," UK-based Skytrax said in a release. Travelers were asked about areas like customer service, comfort, and cleanliness, with over <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/20-biggest-airlines-in-the-world-southwest-american-delta-2022-8#:~:text=The%20organization%20also%20provided%202018's,as%20the%20world's%20largest%20carrier.">350 airlines</a> being named in the survey results. </p><p>As for top award winner <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flying-qatar-airways-qsuites-new-york-doha-in-business-class-2022-8">Qatar Airways,</a> airline CEO Akbar Al Baker said the title has always been a goal of the company. But "to win it for the seventh time and pick up three additional awards is a testament to all the hard work of our incredible employees," he said, noting the airline's top ranking has occurred seven times since the awards first began in 1999.</p><p>Qatar also won titles for having the world's best business class, the best business class seat, and the best business class lounge dining, according to the Skytrax survey.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/see-singapores-a380-first-class-suite-bed-armchair-huge-lavatory-2022-5">Singapore Airlines</a> and Emirates came in second and third, respectively, behind Qatar. Singapore also won the title for the world's best cabin staff.</p><p>No US carrier made the Top 20 list, though <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flying-on-deltas-boeing-767-economy-it-was-great-review-2022-9">Delta Air Lines was the most successful of US airlines</a>, coming in number 24 and earning the award for best airline in North America.</p><p>Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flying-on-southwest-airlines-photos-experience-2022-6">Southwest Airlines earned two titles</a>, including the best low-cost airline in both North America and the US. <ul><li>In an interview with Business Insider, <keyword id="1477766" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hans-Tung">Hans Tung</keyword>, Managing Partner, <keyword id="685446" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="GGV-Capital">GGV Capital</keyword>, talks about why Indian <keyword id="6362513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups">startups</keyword> shouldn’t focus too much on conquering the Chinese market. </li><li>Tung, has over 14 <keyword id="2023017" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="unicorns">unicorns</keyword> in his portfolio, including the likes of <keyword id="719382" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airbnb">Airbnb</keyword>, <keyword id="1815769" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="slack">Slack</keyword>, Bytedance, Xiaomi amongst others.</li><li>Tung invested personally in Flipkart and Snapdeal.</li></ul>When Hans Tung, Managing Partner, GGV Capital, was in India last month, it was not surprising to see the Chinese investor mobbed by Indian entrepreneurs waiting to have a few words with him. <br /><br />And why not? Tung, who was an early investor of <keyword id="302749" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alibaba">Alibaba</keyword>, was here looking for his next big investment. <br /><br />“In India, we are looking at opportunities in consumer internet space. Having been a small personal investor in Snapdeal and Flipkart, I have some experience in tracking the rising consumer internet companies. With Unified Payments Interface (UPI), there’s so much growth possible in the consumer internet space here,” Tung told Business Insider. <br /><br />GGV Capital, the fund which started in 2002 manages about $6.2 billion today, with investments in US and China. The fund has now turned to South East Asia, Latin America and of course, India. <br /><br />Tung explained that when the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of a company crosses $4,000 it brings in higher spending capacity. That’s when industries like e-commerce, live streaming and other forms of user generated content; take off. <br /><br />“India is just under $2000, so over the next 10 years it’s going to be very exciting – India is at the cusp of something big,” said Tung.<br /><br />Tung manages 14 unicorns in his portfolio at GGV Capital including Airbnb, Slack, Bytedance, Xiaomi amongst others. In India, he was an early personal investor in Flipkart and Snapdeal. <br /><br /><strong>China bound? Hold on</strong><br /><br />Today, many Indian startups are heading to China. They want to accomplish bigger things in the faster and more developed market. OYO Hotels &amp; Homes, India’s hospitality unicorn, went to China in 2017. And today, the country is its biggest market, bigger than India which is their home turf. <br /><br />“What’s impressive to me is that many Indian companies know what their Chinese counterpart looks like. They have studied the business models in the Chinese internet space,” said Tung. <br /><br />But Tung has a word of caution for these adventurers – speed. <br /><br />“Speed is the biggest thing. When Bytedance came to India, they quickly made progress with their entities – TikTok. They are aggressive. When an Indian company goes to China if you compete in a pure internet space, it’s difficult. OYO has taken an offline hotel business which gives them some advantage. But if you want to go to China, you have to learn to be as fast as a Chinese company is,” said Tung. <br /><br />Tung advises Indian startups to forget China and go after South East Asia instead. “In the SaaS network and service side, I’m not bullish about Indian companies entering China. I encourage these Indian companies to enter South East Asia – it’s an easier market with a lot more advantages,” he said.<br /><br /><strong>The Alibaba Lesson</strong><br /><br />Tung was named in the Midas List 2019 by Forbes, which lists venture capitalists with the golden touch for unicorns. But he has also learnt his lessons along the way. <br /><br />They were early investors in Alibaba in 2003, when it was valued at $180 million and they exited when it was worth $33 billion in 2012. Today, the company is worth over half-a-trillion Dollars!<br /><br />“It taught us a lesson. When you see companies that are transformational, the upside is always bigger than you imagine. Ours was a nine-year old investment, everyone was happy with how much it had grown and we thought back then – well how much bigger it can get? This Alibaba, Airbnb investor tells Indian startups to forget China and go after South East Asia

<ul class="summary-list"><li>AirlineRatings has unveiled its annual list of <keyword id="13690166" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="best-airlines" source="Orion">best airlines</keyword> in the world.</li><li>The airline ranking website determines the best carriers based on things like passenger comfort and innovation.</li></ul><p><a href="https://www.airlineratings.com/awards/top-twenty-airlines-announced-2022/">AirlineRatings</a> has once again revealed the best <keyword id="11898285" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airlines" source="Orion">airlines</keyword> in the world for 2022, and three US carriers made the list. </p><p>On Thursday, editors at the airline ranking website published its top 20 best carriers based on several factors, including safety, innovation, passenger comfort, service, and staff engagement.</p><p>"We are focused on leadership and airlines that innovate to make a real difference to the passenger experience," AirlineRatings editor-in-chief Geoffrey Thomas said in a press release. "Of course right now the airline industry is under unprecedented pressure as it strives to recover from the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic."</p><p>Taking the number one spot is Doha-based <keyword id="12030362" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="qatar-airways" source="Orion">Qatar Airways</keyword>, which also won in 2021. The carrier consistently comes out on top, with airline ranking website <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/skytrax-reveals-top-airlines-the-world-2021-9">Skytrax also naming it the best airline last year</a>. </p><p>Qatar was named the world's best airline because of its "cabin innovation, passenger service, and its commitment to continue to operate throughout the COVID pandemic," AirlineRatings said.</p><p><keyword id="12427817" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="air-new-zealand" source="Orion">Air New Zealand</keyword> (ANZ) came in second behind Qatar because of its "constant innovation and industry leadership." The airline also ranked number two in 2021, but took the top spot in 2020. </p><p>ANZ has been pushing the envelope with new products and routes recently, including a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-new-zealand-airline-economy-passengers-bunk-beds-flights-2022-6">bunk-bed economy</a> seat and a new <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-new-zealand-launching-long-route-east-coast-south-pacific-2022-3#:~:text=Air%20New%20Zealand%20will%20operate,and%20the%20South%20Pacific%20nation&amp;text=A%20bookmark%20The%20letter%20F,ability%20to%20send%20an%20email.">18-hour nonstop between New York and Auckland</a>. </p><p>The flight will launch in September using its Boeing 787 Dreamliner and become the world's fourth-longest flight.</p><p>Other Middle Eastern carriers, including Etihad Airways and Emirates, also made the top 20 list. JetBlue did not make the list last year.
