CRED had launched new features like CRED RentPay which allows members to pay monthly rent with their credit cards and CRED Stash, which claimed to be “designed to be the fastest, most seamless and fully digital way to get credit in India”. It raised funds twice in 2019 alone – $125 million series A round and $120 million series B funding from Sequoia, Ribbit Capital and more. Its last known valuation from August 2019 is $450 million. <keyword id="3119222" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Moglix">Moglix</keyword> Total funding: $101 million The Ratan Tata-backed B2B e-commerce platform is also touted to be one of the next unicorns from India. The startup specialises in procurement of industrial products such as MRO (manufacture, repair and operating supplies), fasteners, electrical, hardware, pneumatics and safety items among others. Founded by Rahul Garg in 2015, the company has also raised funds from International Financial Corporation (IFC), Accel Partners, Jungle Ventures, Venture Highway, SeedPlus and Rocketship.vc. These three Indian startups feature in the 50 global future unicorns list

<ul><li>Sequoia was rated as the top investor in Indian unicorns in August 2020.</li><li><keyword id="526777" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tiger-Global">Tiger Global</keyword> picked up pace, with nine unicorn deals in the first half of 2021.</li><li>Indian startup ecosystem is poised to have 150 unicorns by 2025.</li></ul> The Indian startup ecosystem is undoubtedly at its prime at the moment, with an undisrupted flow of capital and unicorns in 2021 so far. The country has witnessed the entry of 15 startups into the unicorn club and there is one thing that the startup ecosystem cannot stop talking about — investor Tiger Global. A unicorn, in startup parlance, is a private company valued at or over $1 billion. The New York-based investment firm, which almost went relatively quiet in India since 2016, has significantly picked up its pace to deploy capital this year. Tiger Global, has made some major investments this year -- mostly unicorns and soonicorns (startups likely to enter the unicorn club soon) -- and has risen above ranks to be one of the top investors of 2021. In fact, it has overtaken <keyword id="122716" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sequoia-Capital">Sequoia Capital</keyword> as the top investor in India’s unicorns, in terms of number of deals. Sequoia has invested in 18 of the 52 Indian unicorns and was titled the <a href="https://entrackr.com/2020/08/sequoia-top-investor-in-indian-unicorns-hurun-research/">top </a>investor in Indian unicorns last year by a Hurun report. Meanwhile, Tiger Global is backing 25 of them, making it an investor in almost 50% of the Indian unicorns. This year, alone, Tiger Global invested in 9 of the 15 startups that entered the Indian unicorn club. Sequoia invested in five such new unicorns. Tiger Global had been aggressively chasing the Indian market since 2010, but slowed down its pace in between 2016-2018. The company, which cracked <a href="https://qz.com/india/1608024/what-zenoti-ninjacart-investments-say-about-tiger-global-in-india/">40 deals</a> in India in 2015, only invested in seven startups in 2016, five in 2017 and eight in 2018. Top management changes, with the departure of former partner Lee Fixel, in 2019 slowed down the investor’s pace in India. Seems like Tiger Global is back to its aggressive stance in the Indian market once again, cracking one deal after another. Tiger Global was one of the first big venture capitalists (VC) to be successful in India and showed that exits could happen, Kabir Kochhar, partner at Anthill Ventures, told Business Insider. Notably, Tiger Global received a $3.3 billion exit from its investment in <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, but its Indian investment streak slowed post 2018 and that allowed other VCs to overtake Tiger. Kochhar added, “Being among the first VCs to drive value, write big cheques and show significant exits, things have been quiet in the last few years and they have ceded the mantle other top tier VCs such as Sequoia, <keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Softbank">SoftBank</keyword> and Naspers. Their recent multi-billion dollar fundraise has fuelled their desire to make up for missed opportunities of investing in emerging unicorns over the last few years. Tiger has gone back to its famed aggression and lightening quick decision making and is on a tear in India and globally. It's encouraging to see their bullishness in the Indian VC ecosystem. They’re back and will be a significant player in the evolution and scaling up of the next generation of Indian startups." Outside of the unicorn club, Tiger Global has set its eyes on some of the prominent startups in India. This includes retail financing startup Progcap, insurtech startup Plum, blue collar recruitment platform Apna and multi-brand car workshop platform GoMechanic. It had also led one-year-old microblogging platform <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/indias-micro-blogging-app-koo-raises-30-million-by-tiger-global/articleshow/82965589.cms">Koo’s $30 million round</a> last month, amidst Twitter’s trouble with the Indian government. Now, it is said to be in talks with payments platform BharatPe to lead the three-year-old startup’s<a href="https://techcrunch.com/2021/06/18/tiger-global-in-talks-to-back-bharatpe-at-2-5-billion-valuation/"> unicorn round</a>. The part hedge fund, part equity fund has invested in 118+ companies across the globe this year, taking its total portfolio to 400+ companies with an assets under management (AUM) of $65 billion. According to a Crunchbase<a href="https://news.crunchbase.com/news/tiger-global-management-strategy-investing-2021/"> analysis</a>, Tiger Global’s investment has grown 10 times compared to 2020. The report further adds that Tiger Global led or co-led $10.5 billion worth venture rounds in 2021 till June, doubling the figures compared to full year 2020. Sequoia Capital, on the other hand, led or co-led $4.1 billion worth deals this year till June. Sequoia has invested in 1,500+ companies and has an AUM of more than <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/sequoia-capital-one-of-silicon-valleys-most-notable-vc-firms-told-investors-it-was-hacked/articleshow/81128593.cms">$38 billion</a>. The disparity between Tiger Global and Sequoia Capital’s AUM and portfolio size is simply because of the stages they both focus on. While Tiger Global mostly looks into later stage and post-initial public offering (IPO) deals, Sequoia has spread its wings across seed to later stage deals. This makes Sequoia capital’s portfolio much bigger than Tiger Global, but its AUM is lower due to size of these deals. Sequoia also runs its accelerator programme Surge through which it invests in about 50 early-stage startups in southeast Asia annually. SoftBank Vision Fund, which too makes later stage deals like Tiger Global, is a close second. The Japanese conglomerate has led or co-led about $8.6 billion worth venture rounds globally this year till June. In India, Meesho, Zeta and FirstCry have been its investments this year. Overall, it has invested more than <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Editor-s-Picks/Interview/SoftBank-to-expand-Vision-Fund-portfolio-to-500-companies-Son-says#:~:text=Since%20launching%20the%20Vision%20Fund,billion%20in%20nearly%20200%20companies.">$90 billion </a>in nearly 200 companies. Both Sequoia Capital India and Tiger Global declined to comment on the queries regarding their investment deals in India. India is currently the<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/these-are-the-top-10-most-valued-indian-startups/india-has-the-third-largest-startup-ecosystem-in-the-world/slideshow/80358033.cms"> third biggest startup </a>ecosystem in the world, with over 55,000 startups that have raised $70 billion between 2014 to 2020. As per the data shared by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), the country has at least one startup from 586 districts of the total 739 districts. A business will be considered as a startup, according to the Indian government, up to a period of 10 years from the date of incorporation. Each of these startups should not have a turnover of more than ₹100 crore. Thanks to Tiger Global’s investments streak this year, India seems to be set to meet its ‘100 unicorns by 2025’ deadline much faster. Tiger Global overtakes Sequoia as the top investor in Indian unicorns in 2021, cracks 15 deals this year so far

<ul><li>In an exclusive interview with Business Insider, Pankaj Makkar, Managing Director, <keyword id="1982364" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bertelsmann-India-Investments">Bertelsmann India Investments</keyword> said that <keyword id="864887" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pepperfry">Pepperfry</keyword> is on the right path for fast growth.</li><li>Bertelsmann India Investments has been an investor in Pepperfry since 2014. </li><li>Pepperfry which had last raised funding in March 2018, is reportedly looking to raise another $100 million. </li></ul>Eight-year old online retailer of furniture and home products, Pepperfry, has been one of the market leaders in its segment in India. And its early investors are backing the startup for faster growth and scale. In an exclusive interview with Business Insider, Pankaj Makkar, Managing Director, Bertelsmann India Investments, who invested in Pepperfry in 2014, said that they are in no hurry to exit from the startup as it’s doing really well. Pepperfry has been scaling up its businesses and is also looking at achieving its $1 billion Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/companies/pepperfry-targets-gross-merchandise-value-of-1-billion-by-2021-3754081.html">target</a> by 2021. With over 6 million customers, Pepperfry has 39 offline studios across 22 cities in India and is launching more. “Pepperfry has always been ahead of the curve. Its omni-channel strategy of scaling up operations across metros and tier I and II cities, has worked exceptionally well. We are confident that with the right scale and their strong unit economics, Pepperfry will continue to lead the furniture <keyword id="436047" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ecommerce">eCommerce</keyword> space in India,” said Makkar. The propelling factor in Pepperfry’s journey would be there right selection to be in the e-commerce category unlike in horizontal e-commerce (businesses that sell products from various categories). “In e-commerce, if you look at horizontal businesses, they play on very small margins but if you look at categories like furniture, they play on very high margins,” said Makkar. Founded by Ambareesh Murty and Ashish Shah, Pepperfry had last raised a funding of $38.5 million in March 2018. An investor in Pepperfry, India’s largest online furniture retailer, is in no rush to exit

<ul><li><keyword id="1640900" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Online-grocery">Online grocery</keyword> segment will grow by 55% to reach 1.2% of the market by 2023, said a report by RedSeer and <keyword id="964794" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BigBasket">BigBasket</keyword>. </li><li>Today online grocery startups account for 40% of total e-commerce funding in India. </li><li>Startups in the online grocery sector have raised $665.70 million in funding in 2019 so far.</li></ul>The Indian online grocery segment is growing fast and how. Currently the online food and grocery retail holds a miniscule part of online retail with only 0.2% penetration. But it is predicted to grow by 55% to reach 1.2% of the market by 2023, said a report by RedSeer and BigBasket. The market size of this segment will also expand to $10.5 billion, the report predicts. The customers’ trust on online shopping along with the growing presence of e-grocery players will drive this growth in the sector, added the report. “The online grocery segment has been one of the fastest-growing e-commerce verticals in India and will continue to flourish in both metro and non-metro cities in the years to come,” said Hari Menon, Co-Founder and CEO, bigbasket. Online grocery vs E-commerce in India As Indians are used to visiting the kirana store in the next lane, online grocery has been growing slowly since onset in 2010. In the past few years however it picked up speed. As the number of e-commerce users grew it had a slow but steady effect on online grocery purchases. From a barely any presence in 2010, today online grocery startups account for 40% of total e-commerce funding in India.

A big share of this will come from Tier 2 and 3 cities. Grofers co-founder Dhindsa believes that the next big thing in e-grocery is increasing penetration of e-commerce in tier-2 markets and amongst lower SECs (socio-economic classification) in metros. “E-grocery will bring more shoppers into e-commerce as a whole and already 15% of our new users every month are first time online shoppers. Growing disposable income of the consumers in Tier II markets and the adoption of 4G has already laid a strong foundation for the next wave of growth for e-commerce,” he said.

It is forecasting to hit $100 million in revenue by the end of the current financial year. Today, the Indian grocery space is crowded with multiple players and newly turned unicorns like <keyword id="964794" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BigBasket">BigBasket</keyword>, soonicorns like Grofers. Even food delivery unicorns like Swiggy too are entering the sector. Milkbasket insists on growing without discounts However, while all of these new and old startups are trying to offer discounts and faster delivery options to lure consumers, Milkbasket is adamant. It doesn’t believe in discounts and has only a single slot delivery at 7 am in the morning. “That’s how you build a business, not by burning money. For any B2C business, you can always spoil the customer, but can you make money while doing it? Is it sustainable? We have always tried to strike the balance,” Anant Goel, CEO and co-founder, Milkbasket told Business Insider. So, the four-year-old startup has built a loyal consumer base, without having to give in to the new age trends. It serves 1.5 lakh households across 5 cities (Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad and Bengaluru). The company is averaging 75,000 orders in a day with over 2,250,000 in a month. “We now aim to hit $100 million run rate by the end of the current financial year, we are currently at $60 million,” said Goel. Investors aid Milkbasket’s growth story It has also been a good year for Milkbasket. There was a possible funding from Sachin Bansal’s BACQ Acquisitions. However Milkbasket and Bansal’s firm had issued a joint statement they weren’t going ahead with it. Later, it closed its series B round with $12.7 million. The series B investment includes $10.5 million led by Unilever Ventures and participation from Mayfield India, Kalaari Capital, and Blume Ventures and few Indian family offices and Innoven Capital. And Goel credits it all to doing things differently. “Lots of competition has come in, which was not there earlier or were smaller till last year. Competition in new shapes and forms with big money, chasing us and our customers,” Goel said with a laugh and added, “But we are sure about our model – a sustainable supply chain that can deliver groceries to you.” Busting the myth Goel also busts a myth for us. Contrary to popular belief, Milkbasket has always been into groceries and not just milk. But its name makes people think otherwise. However, the name too has a direct connect to their business model. “When we started grocery in 2015, there were about 200 startups in the space. We asked customers what they want from online grocery startups and they all said discounts. But we are not here to give away discounts. Milkbasket the name came about because milk is a commodity for which you don’t ask discounts, instead you pay more to get it delivered to your house and you are happy to do so,” he said.

Here’s a look at all the startups that have crossed the valuation mark so far in 2019. Rivigo The latest startup to join the unicorn club is logistics startup Rivigo. The logistics sector had long been in the limelight after Delhivery turned unicorn. After this, both Rivigo and Blackbuck raised funds, heating up the race to being a unicorn. Now, Rivigo has managed to be a unicorn after it raised $4.9 million from South Korea's KB Platform Fund. After the deal closed, it is valued at $1.05 billion. Delhivery In March this year, Delhivery became 2019’s first unicorn. This was after the logistics tech startup raised $395 million from SoftBank. After its funding in March, it’s valued at $1.6 billion. The logistics solutions company was founded by Sahil Barua, Mohit Tandon, Suraj Saharan, Kapil Bharti and Bhavesh Manglani. They created a stronghold in the market by partnering with e-commerce majors like Flipkart and Paytm amongst others. Big Basket The grocery retail startup became a unicorn in March 2019. Bigbasket closed its Series F round of funding with an investment of $150 million, which valued it at $2.3 billion. The funding was led by Bigbasket’s earlier investor Alibaba, along with a new investor – Mirae Asset. The grocery sector which is now buzzing with new entrants like Swiggy. Grofers too turned its finances around, and has recently turned a soonicorn after the latest round of funding in May 2019. Ola Electric Ola’s subsidiary Ola Electric also turned a unicorn like its parent company. Its growth has also been fast as most of Ola’s existing investors placed their bets on the company. In July, it became a unicorn after raising $250 million from Softbank. In May, Ola Electric also raised funds from former Vodafone Group CEO Arun Sarin. Some of its other illustrious investors include Chairman Emeritus of Tata Group, Ratan Tata. In March, it had raised ₹4 billion from Ola’s existing and early investors – Tiger Global and Matrix India. Dream 11 India’s first gaming unicorn is Dream11, a fantasy gaming startup. It announced a secondary investment from Steadview Capital, an Asia-focused alternative asset manager in April 2011 which gave brought it its unicorn status. The 11-year old startup had a dream run in 2019, after signing up with IPL and the BCCI as its official partners. The cricket world cup along with IPL helped it clock in stellar numbers. Druva is a SaaS (Software as a Service) startup which was founded by Jaspreet Singh and Milind Borate in 2008. Its patented cloud architecture enables cyber governance, improves cyber resiliency, and helps customers gain critical insights. Citius Tech The healthtech company was a lesser known startup which gained unicorn status. The company provides healthcare solutions, using technologies like business intelligence, mobility and IoT, Big Data, cloud computing, predictive analytics and data science. The company was acquired by Baring Private Equity Asia in July 2019, which gave it a valuation of $1 billion.
