While on one hand <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> star <keyword id="2823" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Akshay-Kumar">Akshay Kumar</keyword> was not even nominated for the role in the movie <keyword id="433624" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rustom">Rustom</keyword> in Filmfare Awards this year, he has managed to grab the most prestigious film award for the same. 
 
The actor was announced the winner of the National Film Award for Best Actor for his role as Captain Rustom Pawri in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/entertainment/Rustom-release-Akshay-Kumars-Rustom-is-inspired-by-this-real-life-story-and-it-is-a-must-read/articleshow/53663632.cms">semi-autobiographical movie</a>, based on the story of Naval Officer K. M. Nanavati.

Sonam Kapoor's critically acclaimed 'Neerja,' based on the life and death of braveheart airhostess <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/entertainment/movies/Sonam-Kapoor-To-Play-Neerja-Bhanot-In-Biopic/articleshow/46766082.cms">Neerja Bhanot</a> was honoured with the Best Film Award. 
These are the 64th National Film Awards, and the jury was headed by director Priyadarshan. 
 
The awards were held at the National Media Centre, where Ajay Devgn's 'Shivaay' also won the award for Best Special Effects.

Akshay Kumar wins the National Award for best actor; 'Neerja' wins best film

If you have been following the Twitter account of ace photographer <keyword id="47" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Atul-Kasbekar">Atul Kasbekar</keyword>, you must be aware of his tweet in which he mentioned <keyword id="96771" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Neerja-Bhanot">Neerja Bhanot</keyword>. 
 
For those of you who don’t know who Neerja Bhanot is, here is a quick recap: She was a flight attendant who sacrificed her life to save three American children from the gunshots of Libyan terrorists who had hijacked Pan Am Flight 73 on 5th September 1986. 
 
Considered a hero by countries across the globe, she was the youngest receiver of Ashok Chakra, India's highest civilian award for bravery. It had been more than a year that Kasbekar tweeted about this, and if reports are to be believed, he is making a biopic on Neerja’s life, and <keyword id="710" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sonam-Kapoor">Sonam Kapoor</keyword> has been roped in to play the braveheart on screen. 
 
Atul will be producing this movie along with Fox Star Studios, and it will be directed by Ram Madhwani. Other details about this project have not been frozen as of yet. 
 
Sonam, who was last seen in <keyword id="2017547" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dolly-Ki-Doli">Dolly Ki Doli</keyword>, is busy shooting for Rajshri's Prem Ratan Dhan Payo opposite <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword>.

Sonam Kapoor To Play Neerja Bhanot In Biopic

<keyword id="96771" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Neerja-Bhanot">Neerja Bhanot</keyword> gave her life while saving 359 passengers onboard Pan Am flight on September 5, 1986. 
 
Neerja, 23, was a flight attendant on the Pan Am flight that was hijacked in Karachi. She was shot point blank when she was trying to exit passengers from the emergency door. She was awarded Ashok Chakra award posthumously. 
 
As actress Sonam Kapoor will be portraying Neerja in her upcoming movie, FoxStarHindi revealed last flight announcement of Neerja Bhanot before the flight to Karachi took off.

 Glad that she liked the movie, <keyword id="34765" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="neerja">Neerja</keyword>’s lead actress Sonam Kapoor shared a picture of Malala standing next to the film’s poster on Instagram and let us know what she thought of the film. 
 
The caption reads: “Malala said ‘I am stronger than fear’ and for #Neerja ‘fear gave her courage! Thank you #MalalaYousafzai for attending a private screening of #Neerja in London. I’m so glad you liked the film.” 
 
While Malala, a Pakistani teengar had survived a brutal <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=taliban">Taliban</a> attack for advocating women's right to education, Neerja saved 359 lives on board the Pan Am 73 flight that was hijacked in Karachi in 1986. 
 
One braveheart standing in solidarity with another braveheart’s sacrifice is heartening, indeed.

A few days back, we told you about a biopic on the life of <keyword id="96771" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Neerja-Bhanot">Neerja Bhanot</keyword>, a braveheart flight attendant who gave up her life to save some passengers from terrorists on a hijacked plane. 
 
The first lead in this family has come in the form of a comic book version of her character. This is an image of Sonam, dressed as a flight attendant, with a bright smile of her face. 
 Even though it looks like Sonam is carrying a gun in her hands, that’s not the case. It’s actually Ranbir Kapoor’s character from <keyword id="183766" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bombay-velvet">Bombay Velvet</keyword>, which happens to be in the poster, which carries all the main characters from the Fox movies that came out this year.

Talking of the character that Sonam is playing in the movie, Neerja Bhanot is the youngest recipient of the Ashok Chakra Award, which happens to be India's most prestigious gallantry award for bravery during peace time.

On Women’s Day, Padma Bhushan awardee, popular actress and social activist <keyword id="19" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shabana-Azmi">Shabana Azmi</keyword> called for increased participation of women in politics. 
 
“It’s extremely important that we have more women participating in politics not because I think it’s a magic wand that will solve all the problems women have but, because it will allow women to be in the space where policies are formed. The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=women+reservation+bill">women reservation bill</a> can be a huge help in this regard,” she said. 
 
“Each woman should have the right to formulate opinions concerning her life and assert for her rights in the decision making process; and in politics this can only be achieved through reservation. It’s only sad that political parties have delayed this Bill because they don’t want women to get their due even as the modern society has started recognizing the individual identity of women, her aspiration, abilities and qualities. It is increasingly being accepted that she is a significant unit of the society and is also influencing the course of social as well as economic change in society. Women are negotiating for more space for themselves. There has to be a constant effort in making her views to be considered and accepted in all sectors,” she added. 
 
She however said how pained she is to see India living in several centuries simultaneously. “On one hand, women hold top positions in corporate world banking sector and on the other hand, it's a sad reality that female foeticide is also practiced. The patriarchal mind-set is so deeply entrenched such that both men and women consider a boy is privileged over a girl from the time of his birth just for being a boy!” she said. 
 The actress who recently played <keyword id="710" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sonam-Kapoor">Sonam Kapoor</keyword>’s mother in the movie <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=neerja">Neerja</a> said <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> has come far in thinking about the way it portrays actresses, even as there’s still a lot of scope for improvement. 
 
“Heroines in Hindi cinema have come a long way from the Main Chup Rahoongi model of virtue. Working women are more visible and there are myriad roles being offered to women of all age groups. Earlier a heroine's career was over at 30. Today, you have a Sonam Kapoor whose career has just taken wings at 30. The traditional divide between the Madonna/ whore has blurred. The vamp has all but disappeared. All this is reason to celebrate but I continue to be troubled by the item number.” 
 
“Under the guise of celebrating her sensuality which is welcome the item number reduces the woman to becoming an object of the male gaze and commodifies her. Lyrics like “Main Tandoori Murg Hoon Mujhe Gatka Lo Alcohol Ke Saath" is being gyrated to by 6-year olds and leads to the sexualisation of children. In all humility I'd caution our talented female stars to pause and think and then make an informed choice,” she said. 
 
Also, the film makers, she advised, must see the difference in the way their cameras pan over a woman’s body. “It’s what decides whether a scene is celebrating sensuality or meant for titillating,” she said. 
 
“We have much to celebrate. Empowerment of women is no longer a buzz word it is central to the development paradigm. All in all, let's celebrate and pay homage to all those wonderful women who struggled for equality and created the path for us to traverse on,” she concluded.
