<ul class="summary-list"><li>A panel convening at the <keyword id="11902211" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="world-economic-forum" source="Orion">World Economic Forum</keyword> in Davos today reviewed the world's diversity, equity, and inclusion outlook.</li><li>Quotas and KPIs will not be enough to improve the lives of marginalized people, panelists told event attendees.</li></ul>A panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos today concluded that progress in diversity, equity, and inclusion is not coming fast enough for the world's marginalized.Since the last time world leaders met at the conference, companies, institutions, and governments have launched various <keyword id="11893567" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="dei" source="Orion">DEI</keyword> programs. Some of these included introducing quotas that ensure traditionally marginalized people make it into the interview rooms of big businesses and organizations. Yet the room at Davos heard that setbacks, which included the pandemic and the Ukraine war, have meant that inequalities not only persist but that we are also seeing progress slowing down in some areas. "You just can't take your foot off the gas for a minute," said Bloomberg chairman, Peter T Grauer, who spoke at the event. "This is a race without a finish line."With the global gender gap <a href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2021/04/136-years-is-the-estimated-journey-time-to-gender-equality/">extended</a> by another generation; <a href="https://www.insider.com/trans-woman-nj-diner-manager-demanded-she-use-mens-room-2022-5">LGBTQ+ rights</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taliban-orders-women-tv-presenters-iafghanistan-to-cover-their-faces-2022-5">women's rights</a> under continued pressure; and reportedly <a href="https://fortune.com/2021/05/06/us-companies-black-communities-money-50-billion/">less money materializing</a> from the companies that pledged $50 billion towards ending racism in the aftermath of George Floyd's murder, it may even be time to push down harder on the pedal. <h2>More than a box-ticking exercise </h2>"It's not enough to use quota or KPIs," Petra De Sutter, deputy prime minister of Belgium, said. When we do, those who do not wish to disclose their disabilities or sexual orientation are at risk of being left behind, she added. Plus, box-ticking exercises such as these ignore the unconscious bias that takes place in interview rooms. This bias often prevents marginalized people from getting work, or even from being able to access certain spaces. "Unconscious bias is a part of all of us," Ilham Kadri, CEO and chairman of the executive committee for chemicals company <keyword id="14030424" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="solvay" source="Orion">Solvay</keyword> told the panel. "We really need to be trained, and remind ourselves of it during interviews," she added. Kadri's company ensures all 100 of her top-level management receive unconscious bias training, and that 50% of Solvay's interviewees come from minority backgrounds; Bloomberg runs unconscious bias training for all of their employees once a year. But for Kadri's company, Solvay, the issue is not just getting marginalized people into the building, but getting them into the boardroom, and they are far from alone in this. "Women can enter the public service," added De Sutter, speaking on disparities in global governments. "But if you look at the top management, 25% are women."<h2>DEI faces pushback </h2>A wider adherence to <keyword id="11893568" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="diversity-and-inclusion" source="Orion">diversity and inclusion</keyword> programs is not only a moral imperative but also an economic one, panelists agreed. DEI has the powerful potential to improve efficiency, bring in new, untapped talent, and drive revenue. "We are not doing this as a charity, we are a company. I'm running a profitable company, and it impacts the bottom line," Kadri told Davos attendees. Despite this, there has been significant pushback on DEI, with efforts at inclusion becoming <a href="https://www.politico.eu/article/european-commission-ursula-von-der-leyen-document-eu/">fodder</a> in the culture wars. To combat this, governments and lawmakers need to get behind efforts to implement change, said panelists. This starts with implementing and normalizing the legal frameworks that help protect marginalized people. "Legal frameworks are very important as a political struggle so that you know you're living in a country where laws protect you, you cannot be discriminated against, you can go to court, you have your rights," said De Sutter. Beyond legalities, gender mainstreaming — the concept of considering the different implications for people of different genders of any planned policy action, including legislation and government programs — will be essential for enacting real change. Other policy and company-wide changes, like extended maternity leave for all genders, unconscious bias training for all employees, and bringing together all sectors of society, from academics and policymakers to business leaders and industry heavyweights to drive new solutions, will all help to implement change. Plus, advocating for equal access to education will prove necessary in giving all workers the opportunity to develop their skillsets. "Diversity and inclusion merit the same urgency as climate change," said Kadri. "It's time we started acting like it."

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Lithium-ion batteries are the most common type of battery found in electric vehicles.</li><li>Scientists found they contain PFAS or 'forever chemicals' found in air, water, snow, soil, and sediment.</li></ul>Scientists have uncovered a new source of hazardous "forever chemical" pollution: the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries found in most electric vehicles.Some lithium-ion battery technologies use a class of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-are-pfas-chemicals-2018-8">PFAS chemicals</a>, or per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances, that helps make batteries less flammable and conduct electricity. Scientists found high levels of these PFAS in air, water, snow, soil, and sediment samples near plants that make those chemicals in the US, Belgium, and France, according to a <a target="_blank" href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-024-49753-5">peer-reviewed study</a> in the journal Nature Communications.PFAS are known as "forever chemicals" because they <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chart-how-long-hazardous-forever-chemicals-pfas-stay-in-blood-2023-3">build up quickly</a> in the environment, people, and animals and don't break down for thousands of years. They've been linked to a host of health conditions, including <a target="_blank" href="https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxprofiles/tp200.pdf">liver damage</a>, high <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2831917/">cholesterol</a>, low <a target="_blank" href="https://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/1408837/">birth weights</a>, and chronic <a target="_blank" href="https://academic.oup.com/aje/article/174/8/893/155305">kidney disease</a>.The findings underscore how switching to cleaner cars and renewable energy is key to solving the climate crisis, but comes with its own set of trade-offs that are still emerging and understudied. While the environmental and health impacts of mining lithium and other minerals used in batteries, solar panels, wind turbines, and other technology are well documented, it's only now that researchers are uncovering lithium-ion batteries as a source of PFAS pollution."Slashing [carbon dioxide] emissions with innovations like electric cars is critical, but it shouldn't come with the side effect of increasing PFAS pollution," Jennifer Guelfo, an associate professor of environmental engineering at Texas Tech University and coauthor of the study, said in a statement.It's an issue of global concern because lithium-ion batteries are used worldwide, the study said. The same class of PFAS has recently been detected at low levels in European and Chinese water, but the source of the pollution was unclear.The specific class of PFAS that Guelfo's team found is called bis-perfluoroalkyl sulfonimides, or bis-FASIs. Scientists tested more than a dozen lithium-ion batteries used in EVs and consumer electronics like laptops, and found bis-FASIs at various concentrations.It's hard to know just how widespread the chemicals are in specific lithium-ion batteries because there isn't enough research yet, Lee Ferguson, associate professor of environmental engineering at Duke University and coauthor of the study, said.Guelfo said bis-FASIs is comparable to "older notorious" chemicals like PFOA, in part because they are extremely difficult to degrade and studies show the chemicals change the behavior of aquatic organisms at low concentrations. PFOA has been phased out of production in the US but <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/epa-hazardous-forever-chemicals-drinking-water-limits-2024-4">continues to pollute drinking water</a>.The study was the first "cradle-to-grave" evaluation of the environmental impacts of bis-FASI use in lithium-ion batteries. The effects of bis-FASIs in humans hasn't been studied yet.The scientists detected bis-FASIs chemicals at parts per billion levels — much higher than the limits the Environmental Protection Agency <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/epa-hazardous-forever-chemicals-drinking-water-limits-2024-4">set for PFAS in drinking water in April</a>. Strategies to get rid of PFAS in drinking water can also remove bis-FASIs, the study said, which should become more widely adopted due to EPA's regulations. However, chemical makers and some water utilities <a target="_blank" href="https://www.npr.org/sections/shots-health-news/2024/06/21/nx-s1-5013957/pfas-forever-chemicals-drinking-water-rule-lawsuits">have challenged the agency in court.</a>Other routes of exposure to bis-FASIs exist. Air emissions data suggest the chemicals can travel to areas far from manufacturing sites. They can also leach into the environment from landfills, where the majority of lithium-ion batteries end up.The study said only about 5% of lithium-ion batteries are recycled, and by 2040, there could be some 8 million tons of lithium-ion battery waste.Guelfo said scientists, engineers, manufacturers, and policymakers need to develop battery technology and recycling solutions that don't exacerbate PFAS pollution."We need to be carefully evaluating these chemicals that are being used in sustainable energy infrastructure," Guelfo said. "We should be evaluating them now before it becomes a more widespread problem. We an opportunity to really maximize the idea of sustainability."Companies including 3M, Solvay, and Arkema either hold patents for bis-FASIs or advertise its production or use, the study said. (In December — after the research was conducted — Solvay spun off its specialty and applied chemical businesses into a new entity named Syensqo. Mumbai, Mar 23 () Fitch Ratings on Monday said the outlook of Tata Chemical's (TCL) long-term foreign-currency issuer default rating (IDR) was stable at 'BB+' following reduced energy costs, which will support a healthy margin. The rating reflects TCL's globally leading and cost-competitive position in soda ash, geographic diversification, the soda-ash sector's adequate exposure to non-discretionary end-markets, and improving financial profile, Fitch said. TCL is the world's third-largest soda ash producer, with a geographic footprint across India, the US, the UK and Kenya. It is, however, constrained by TCL's small scale relative to global peers and lack of product diversification. "We maintain a stable outlook notwithstanding lower sales, which are likely to persist for six months, stemming from the coronavirus pandemic," as per the rating agency's report. Fitch Ratings weaker demand will be mitigated by lower energy costs, which should support a healthy margin, and that soda ash supply will remain largely stable over the long term. Around two-thirds of TCL's 4.3 million tonne of soda ash capacity is based in Wyoming in the US and Lake Magadi in Kenya, two key global regions, along with Turkey, which has natural trona deposits that require low conversion costs. This underpins the company's cost competitiveness relative to producers in other locations, it said. Further, TCL's operation benefits from superior geographical diversification and Fitch expects around half of EBITDA to come from India in the financial year ending FY20, 45 per cent from developed markets in the US and Europe and the remaining 5 per cent from Africa. The soda ash also has a good mix of discretionary (flat glass) and non-discretionary (detergents, glassware and chemical products) end markets, which limits cyclical variation in volume. "However, this is mitigated by product concentration in soda ash, which, along with sodium bicarbonate and salt manufacturing, forms nearly 90 per cent of FY20 EBITDA, in our view, and exposes TCL to risks associated with the commodity nature of its products," it added. Fitch expects TCL's soda ash revenue to decline by 5 per cent in FY20, driven by a slowdown in the auto and real-estate sectors, and for FY21 sales to fall by around 10 per cent on a like-for-like basis as the demand slowdown is exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic in the near term. The drop in profitability from depressed sales will be mitigated by lower energy costs, it opined. "We expect the demand-supply balance to tighten over the medium-term as the business cycle normalises and sales growth improves to mid-single digits. "This is notwithstanding the announced capacity additions by global majors, like Solvay SA (BBB/Positive) and Genesis Alkali, LLC, which may be delayed in light of the current risks to growth in key end-user industries," Fitch added. TCL's financial flexibility remains strong, the rating agency said, adding that "we expect capex to be funded through internal accruals and positive free cash generation over FY21-FY23". The company's liquidity is supported by its cash balance of Rs 3,800 crore as of end-September 2019 and undrawn credit lines and revolving credit facilities of Rs 570 crore as of end-2019. "TCL has Rs 1,600 crore (USD 225 million) of debt maturing in August 2020 at its North American subsidiary, which we expect it to refinance comfortably," Fitch said. The company also has investments of around Rs 2,450 crore in various Tata group entities, which boosts its liquidity options, it added. SM ANSANS

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Apple</div></div></div><ul><li>Apple wants its parts suppliers to use renewable energy, like it does at its stores and headquarters.</li><li>So it's investing in a $300 million fund along with its suppliers that will invest in new solar and wind projects in China. </li><li>The fund will be managed by DWS Group, Deutche Bank's asset management arm.</li></ul><a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/aapl-stock">Apple</a> is reaching into its cash pile to help spread solar energy and wind farms across China. The iPhone maker has teamed up with 10 of its components suppliers to create a new $300 million fund that will invest in renewable sources of energy in China over the next four years.The fund, called the China Clean Energy Fund, will be managed by DWS Group, Deutsche Bank's asset management arm. The idea is that the fund can invest in new power generators so that the companies that make parts for Apple - its suppliers - have better access to renewable energy sources. In China, where many of Apple's suppliers are based, that means a lot of wind wind and solar. Apple did not specify how much of the $300 million fund will come from its coffers and how much its 10 suppliers will contribute. Apple is hoping the fund can help develop new renewable energy projects that don't currently exist. Apple said that the projects it invests in will total more than 1 gigawatt of renewable energy. Part of the reason for the fund is to help smaller companies that do work for Apple find clean energy. While a big supplier may be able to negotiate renewable cost-effective renewable energy deals, a smaller manufacturer may have less leverage. That's important as Apple said earlier this year that it wants its suppliers to run off of 100% clean energy. <a href="https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2018/04/apple-now-globally-powered-by-100-percent-renewable-energy/">It announced in April</a> that its own facilities were fully powered by renewable energy, including its headquarters, Apple Park, which has a 17-megawatt solar installation on its roof.
