At some point of time, you must have had the want to travel solo, especially after going through a zillion photographs of people on wanderlust, that too alone on travel sites, social networking sites, etc. 
 <keyword id="1251521" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="solo-travelling">Solo travelling</keyword>, as many travel experts describe, is an enriching experience which connects you with yourself. It’s the penultimate time that you spend with yourself, makes you procrastinate and teaches you that life, after all, isn’t that bad and it goes on. 
 
For plenty, solo travelling is your space, which no one can take away from you. The perspective changes, you love yourself more and ditch that thinking that you need humans around you to survive. 
 
On the flip side of the coin, for many, solo travelling is more than a ‘me-time’ moment. It is more of a challenge. Challenge, because solo travelling means full-stop to the constant bickering and suffocating the need to speak with someone all the time. 
 
There are many experiences one encounters on a solo trip. No matter how much you read and watch videos on it, your experience will always be new and something no one has ever talked about. On my first solo trip, I went through some ‘giving-up’ moments, but I conquered them. All you need is just little time and perseverance. 
 
Here are few things that I experienced that no one ever told me about solo travelling 
 
1. Be prepared for the ‘surprised’ looks: While travelling from Guwahati to Shillong, on the picturesque GS road, the driver asked me ‘who stays in Shillong?’ I said no one and then came a surprised look. ‘You are going to Shillong alone!’ So, there will be times when people will make you doubt yourself-Am I doing the right thing? 
 
2. ‘Don’t go outside after sunset’ advises: I totally get it when people are concerned about your safety. When the hotel gets to know you are alone, they go into frenzy. ‘Please madam, don’t go outside after dark. We will get you everything inside.” 
 
3. You will feel lonely, be prepared: Going to a place like Shillong, which is blessed with nature’s bounty, you cannot expect people to be alone. Imagine waterfalls, lush green landscapes, mountains and you. Alone, now? There will be families, college groups, couples, etc to make you feel lonely. It is natural. You just have to conquer this feeling. Take a book along, it helps. 
 
4. Desired photographs: If you are willing to carry tripods and cameras to take your pictures at the backdrop of dark clouds, hilly terrains, it is upto you. But if you are dependent on selfies and other people to click your photos, don’t expect anything. The pictures can be awful, not even throwback kinds. 
 
5. Adrenaline rush: You want to go zip lining, paragliding, et al but you will have to boost your own confidence. No friend will be standing behind you to cheer you up. So, help yourself. 
 
6. Eating alone: Table for two? Trying local cuisines at small cafes and restaurants can be fun, but you will have this constant eye on you. Many people will be waiting for the other person on your table, who will never arrive (Only you know this). For people in remote areas, solo travelling does not exist. 
 
7. Sleeping in the hotel: There are many places where the sun sets around 5pm and local markets shut down around 8pm. What do you do? Sit cooped inside your hotel. In this time, you can document your solo journey and make a diary. This will help you pass time. Else, switch on the TV and sleep.

The journey to any place is splendid and you would want to spend your entire day just driving through the state marvelling in its natural beauty.

An urban junkie would avoid a visit to any typical village during a heavy rain day, fearing muck, potholes, mounds of garbage everywhere. 
 
However, Mawlynnong lives up to its name that it earned in 2003. It is indeed the cleanest village, not in India but in all of Asia. Almost 100 kilometres away from Shillong, the village is hard to miss as it literally looks like a picture on a travel postcard. 
 
And, all credit goes to the residents of this quaint and peaceful place, who without any support from the government, have turned the village into a green haven.

“Our forefathers have imbibed this thing in us. The village is like our house, we should keep it clean. Everyone here is responsible for this village’s cleanliness and everyone feels a sense of responsibility towards this cause here,” said Phillip, who runs a tea stall here. 
 
 
 
 
Even before PM Narendra Modi started his famous drive to clean all of India, ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’, inhabitants of this village have been sweeping, gathering garbage, and installing dustbins here. 
 
 
 
“We teach our children also to keep the village clean. Even if we drop something by mistake and the ground gets dirty, people feel guilty about it,” said Philip. 
 
Roots bridges 
 
The walk through the village is like taking a walk through a jungle-trail. The trails and roots bridges will lead you to stunning views. 
 
The living tree root-bridges will leave you awestruck- made by the locals, who entwined the roots of the rubber trees to pave paths through the thick forest. The roots are woven in such a fashion that they are not slippery and are sturdy. 
 
 
 
The locals are perhaps the most humble and helpful, always eager to help people who lose their way in the mammoth forest. 
 
 
 
And, if it is pouring heavily and you can’t make your way back to Shillong, you can stay at the locals’ houses. 
 
 
 
Another attraction here is the Sky View. It is a 85feet high bamboo tower from which you can see the Bangladesh border. 
 
A drawback too 
 
The only thing which is a little disturbing from the environment point of view is they burn the garbage. “Since there is no government support, we don’t know where to dispose off the garbage, so we have to burn it,” said Philip, adding “We know it’s harmful, but what choice do we have.”

This monsoon, as per our findings, consumers are looking forward to traveling to scenic destinations and making the most of the rains, closer to nature,” Shreerang Godbole, SVP of product &amp; chief service officer, OYO said. Even in August, with its three long weekends, over 50% of the respondents noted that they would take trips that last anywhere between one and three daysdays. Meanwhile, 33% have been thinking of a week-long trip all thanks to flexible remote and hybrid work. The company slashed prices on stays for the long weekends between August 8 to August 21, with tariffs starting at ₹399. It recommended customers to use the ‘Pay At Hotel’ feature to book their stays now and pay at the check-in time at the hotel. “This year, Raksha Bandhan and Independence Day, could be clubbed together giving consumers the leeway to take that much needed trip with family, friends or even enjoy some quiet time travelling solo. This year has been all about travel aspirations and our campaign is an ode to the unexplored domestic destinations of India,” Godbole had noted. The company’s previous report also noted that 95% of Indians now prefer domestic trips over international ones. Its Monsoon Travel Report 2022 also found that 50% of its respondents are keen to take a monsoon trip beyond city-limits. The report also noted that hill stations like Ooty, Lonavala, Munnar, Shillong and Coorg are the most popular destinations this monsoon. Uttarakhand was another popular destination among travelers. Nearly 40% of the people choosing these destinations are looking for accommodation in scenic locations with hill or lake views.
