As part of its vision for the company's rapid transition to a new era of green, clean and renewable energy, the Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited (<keyword id="6484187" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ril">RIL</keyword>), <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>, on Thursday unveiled the strategy and roadmap for its New Energy and New Materials business with an investment of ₹75,000 crore over a period of three years. During the 44th annual general meeting of RIL, Ambani said the investment would go into the setting up of four Giga factories that will manufacture and fully integrate all the critical components of the new energy ecosystem involving production of solar energy, storage of intermittent energy, production of green hydrogen and converting hydrogen into motive and stationary power. Reliance will invest 60,000 crore on these initiatives in the next three years. The rest 15,000 crore is kept for value chain, partnerships and future cost in the same time frame. Ambani said the company has started work on developing the Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex over an area covering 5,000 acres in <keyword id="6361405" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="jamnagar">Jamnagar</keyword>, Gujarat, which will be among the largest integrated renewable energy manufacturing facilities in the world. "Jamnagar was the 'cradle of our old energy business'. It will also be the 'cradle of our new energy business'," Ambani said at the AGM. Reliance will establish and enable at least 100 GW of solar energy by 2030 with a significant part of this coming from rooftop solar and decentralised solar installations in villages, he said. It will also set up an Advanced Energy Storage Giga Factory that will be used to produce large-scale grid batteries to store the energy that is created. The third initiative of the company would be the setting up of an Electrolyser Giga Factory to manufacture modular electrolysers of highest efficiency and lowest capital cost. These can be used for captive production of green hydrogen for domestic use as well as for global sale. The fourth initiative will be a Fuel Cell Giga Factory. A Fuel Cell uses oxygen from the air and hydrogen to generate electricity. "In 2016, we had launched Jio with the aim of bridging the Digital Divide in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>. Now in 2021, we are launching our New Energy business with the aim of bridging the green energy divide in India and globally," Ambani said. The complex comprises five giga factories for photovoltaic panels, fuel cell system, green hydrogen, energy storage and power electronics. "On track to commence new energy facilities in phases this year," the company said in a post-third-quarter earnings call with investors. Post announcement of third-quarter earnings on Friday, Ambani stated that the "New Energy Giga Complex is all set to be commissioned in the second half of CY24. I am confident that Reliance's New <keyword id="679565" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="energy-business" source="Orion">Energy business</keyword> will play a pivotal role in the global movement for adoption of cleaner fuels." The Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex will be among the largest integrated renewable energy manufacturing facilities in the world. Reliance has signed an MoU with the Gujarat government to set up 100 gigawatt renewable power at Rs 5 lakh crore capex. It has received in-principle approval for 74,750 hectares (ha.) of land parcels in Kutch for green hydrogen. The firm has strategically invested in ten global technology innovators with strong expertise across the new energy value chain. "Reliance is nearing the commissioning of the first tranche of 5GW module manufacturing capacity in mid-CY24," Nuvama said in a January 17 note. It has via REC Solar signed a supply agreement with China-based Suzhou Maxwell Technologies to buy a high efficiency production line for HJT cells (4.8GW capacity). It signed a 5.2GW HJT module automation production agreement with China-based SC Solar in January 2023. It won PLIs under both rounds of solar modules PLI (Round 1: USD 0.3 billion, 4GW; Round 2: USD 0.4 billion, 6GW). Reliance (apart from Greenko) is the only company to win incentives for both green hydrogen and electrolysers concluded recently. It won incentives of USD 0.3 per kg for electrolyser capacity of 300MW and USD 0.23 for green hydrogen capacity of 90,000 tonnes. Besides, it has won PLI under ACC battery storage for 5GW capacity. "These incentives are likely to assist Reliance achieve a green hydrogen cost of USD 1' 1.5 per kg," Nuvama said. Given <keyword id="20002939" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ril" source="keywords">RIL</keyword> is the largest producer and consumer of grey hydrogen, transition to green hydrogen shall enable it to improve margins ahead, it said. The current green hydrogen cost hovers USD 3 per kg, which remains 1.5x compared to grey hydrogen produced using natural gas due to the high cost of generating solar/wind energy as well as high electrolyser cost. Presently, a hybrid of solar and wind remains the cheapest source of generating green hydrogen. The cost for solar remains the highest due to low PLF of electrolysers at 30' 35 per cent versus wind at 65' 70 per cent, and for hybrid 70' 75 per cent.

Speaking at the <keyword id="12015497" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="International-Climate-Summit-2021" source="Orion">International Climate Summit 2021</keyword>, Ambani said it will be amongst the largest integrated renewable energy manufacturing facilities in the world. This complex will have four Giga Factories, which cover the entire spectrum of renewable energy. The first will be an integrated solar photovoltaic module factory. The second will be an advanced energy storage battery factory. The third will be an electrolyser factory for the production of Green Hydrogen. The fourth will be a fuel cell factory for converting hydrogen into motive and stationary power, Ambani said. Ambani said over the next three years we will invest Rs 75,000 crore in these initiatives. <keyword id="10926" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance" source="Orion">Reliance</keyword> will thus create and offer a fully integrated, end-to-end renewables energy ecosystem to India and Indians, he added. Efforts are on globally to make Green Hydrogen the most affordable fuel option by bringing down its cost to initially under USD 2 per kg. "Let me assure you all that Reliance will aggressively pursue this target and achieve it well before the turn of this decade. Am sure that India can set an even more aggressive target of achieving under USD 1 per kg within a decade," Ambani said. This will make India the first country globally to achieve $1 per 1 kilogram in 1 decade -- the 1-1-1 target for Green Hydrogen, he added. You may have heard about the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/great-american-shale-boom-future-paragraph-2014-3">shale revolution</a>, which helped make natural gas plants the No. 1 new energy source in the U.S. last year.
Though not on the same scale, the rise of solar energy has been just as impressive. New photovoltaic and concentrated solar installations constituted <a href="http://cleantechnica.com/2014/01/28/solar-surpasses-natural-gas-part-us-energy-infrastructure/">the second-largest source of new energy in 2013</a>, and the number of solar jobs in the U.S. climbed 20%, <a href="http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2014/01/27/3209961/2013-solar-jobs-census/">according to The Solar Foundation</a>, making it one of the fastest-growing industries in the country. 
With nearly a quarter of the residential installation market, Elon Musk's SolarCity has been at the vanguard of this movement, thanks to its leasing model and its financing strategy, which includes things like solar-backed bonds. 
Still, <a href="http://gigaom.com/2014/05/16/as-solar-panels-boom-it-was-the-simple-business-model-that-the-big-energy-players-missed/">as GigaOm's Katie Fehrenbacher reports</a>, this could have been an opportunity that an established energy player like GE could have tapped - and GE is now acknowledging as much. She writes:

"My God I wish I had thought of that," said Immelt.
