<ul class="summary-list"><li>Even smartphones can get great photos of the total solar eclipse on April 8.</li><li>Scouting a great location and practicing your shots ahead of time is key.</li></ul><p>Whether you’re on the ground or in the sky during <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-2024-total-solar-eclipse-cool-best-special-nasa-2024-1">this year’s Great American Eclipse</a>, you can get stunning photos with a digital camera or a smartphone. You just need to plan ahead a little.</p><p>“The last thing you want is to try to play it by ear when it’s happening because then you’re going to miss it,” astrophotographer Jon Carmichael, who took what's considered one of the most stunning photos of a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-photo-eclipse-2018-9">solar eclipse ever in 2017</a>, told Business Insider. </p><p>Here’s how to get the best shots, according to Carmichael and Andrew Studer, a photographer whose work has been published by National Geographic and BBC Earth, to name just a few.</p><h2>1. Get to totality</h2><div type="image" title="NASA graphic showing the United States with a dark band stretching from Texas to Maine indicating the path of totality." height="960" width="1920" msid="107670550" hostid="261" sizebytes="347604"></div><p>Tens to hundreds of millions of people across the US will get to experience a partial solar eclipse on April 8. However, a smaller percentage will get the life-changing opportunity to witness something called totality, when the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-diagram-2017-8">moon completely eclipses the sun</a>. </p><p>If you’re already in the path of totality, you’re in great shape. If you’re not in the path of totality, you can still take some nice photos but they won't be as dramatic because even if the moon covers 99% of the sun, the sky is still significantly brighter than if the sun is 100% eclipsed.</p><p>“It’s literally a night and day difference,” compared to the partial eclipse that will be visible over a wider swath of the US, Carmichael said.</p><p>Over 30 million people will be in the path of totality, which will move from Texas to Maine. You can check to see if you’re one of them with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-where-when-see-solar-eclipse-united-states-nasa-map-2023-3">this helpful NASA map</a>.</p><h2>2. Scout your spot — then have a backup</h2><div type="image" title="Dark clouds nearly cover a partial solar eclipse." height="1388" width="2161" msid="107670551" hostid="261" sizebytes="18362"></div><p>The most important factor for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-stunning-images-show-sun-obscured-in-rare-event-2021-6">great eclipse photos</a> is something we can’t control: the weather. </p><p>When you’re deciding where to watch the total eclipse, pick your ideal spot, factoring in historical weather patterns for early April, Carmichael said. </p><p>Then, have a backup location if the forecast is cloudy. </p><p>Even if you have to watch the eclipse from the side of the road, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dazzling-photos-rare-ring-of-fire-solar-eclipse-2020-6">having a clear sky</a> is more important than a more picturesque, but cloudy, vantage point, he said. </p><h2>3. Use apps to your advantage</h2><div type="image" title="The diamond ring affect from a total solar eclipse" height="2303" width="2303" msid="107670553" hostid="261" sizebytes="66730"></div><p>There are lots of apps that can help you create a great eclipse photo. </p><p>Studer recommends PhotoPills, which allows you to plot the position of the moon and sun ahead of time. </p><p>Carmichael likes Solar Snap, an app developed by former Hubble Space Telescope Astronomer, Doug Duncan, that acts as a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-2017-how-to-take-photos-of-the-eclipse-2017-8">solar filter for smartphones</a> and lets you use long exposure to get great shots of the sky. </p><p>It's important to have a filter on your smartphone or camera. Otherwise, if you point it at the sun during an eclipse, you could concentrate too much heat on it and ruin the electronics.</p><h2>4. Consider renting equipment</h2><div type="image" title="A total solar eclipse with the moon as a black circle on top of the sun." height="2450" width="1750" msid="107670554" hostid="261" sizebytes="135380"></div><p>It’s possible to get a great photo of the total solar eclipse with just your smartphone or a basic digital camera. But if you want a close-up of the sun and moon, you’ll need a telephoto lens. </p><p>Studer recommends renting one. A 200 millimeter (mm) lens is good for most shots, he said, while a 400 mm lens will reveal even more detail, like the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronal-hole-on-sun-blasts-solar-wind-toward-earth-2023-3">corona of the sun</a> or craters on the moon. </p><h2>5. Go automated</h2><div type="image" title="Camera set up to automatically photograph a solar eclipse." height="1419" width="2112" msid="107670555" hostid="261" sizebytes="38030"></div><p>You don’t want to spend the entire time during the eclipse trying to snap the best photo. You’ll miss the chance to appreciate this cosmic event <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/12-ways-your-smartphone-is-making-your-life-worse-2018-6">without looking through a lens</a> or screen.</p><p>“I guarantee to anybody it will be the most beautiful moment you will ever see in your life,” Carmichael said. </p><p>With that in mind, Carmichael recommends using a tripod and adjusting your camera settings so it can snap photos automatically while you take a moment for yourself.</p><p>The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-totality-corona-simulated-pictures-2017-8">period of totality</a> during this eclipse will be up to 4 minutes and 26 seconds, depending on your location. So you may even snap a few photos hands-on, then enjoy totality for yourself, if you time it right. </p><h2>6. Practice 24 hours before</h2><div type="image" title="A partial solar eclipse appears fire red through thick plums of bushfire smoke." height="1414" width="2121" msid="107670557" hostid="261" sizebytes="24500"></div><p>Once you’ve found the perfect location, get on site 24 hours before the eclipse. </p><p>“It’s really good to spend the day before planning things,” Studer said. </p><p>The sun will be in nearly the same spot it will be in during the eclipse, so use its position to plot where you’ll stand, how you’ll frame your photo, and the angles you’ll shoot. </p><h2>7. This is especially important if you’re taking photographs with a smartphone, which has a delicate light sensor, Carmichael said. </p><p>The simplest fix is to hold a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-approved-eclipse-glasses-brands-2017-8">pair of eclipse glasses</a> over the phone lens to help filter light. If you’re using a camera, a solar filter can help you get a great photo without damage. </p><h2>8. Include other subjects besides the moon and sun</h2><div type="image" title="The moon partially eclipses the sun in the sky with palm trees and the ocean in the foreground." height="5040" width="3360" msid="107670559" hostid="261" sizebytes="355616"></div><p>While the moon and sun are the stars of the eclipse, having other subjects in your photo helps give it context, Studer told BI. </p><p>He took this approach with his well-known 2017 <a target="_blank" href="https://andrewstuder.com/stills/2017-solar-eclipse/">photo showing a rock climber</a> against the background of the eclipse. </p><p>Whether it’s a dramatic rock formation, a tree, or the profile of someone you love, the juxtaposition of a subject and the sun is very powerful. </p><p>“Having a subject within the image makes it more fun, more unique, and more special to the photographer,” Studer said. </p><h2>9. Zoom out</h2><div type="image" title="Total solar eclipse in the upper right of the photo with the moon's shadow cast down on the mountainous land below." height="1250" width="2000" msid="107670561" hostid="261" sizebytes="84742"></div><p>Carmichael’s famous photo that he snapped in 2017 took shape in his head long before the actual event. </p><p>He knew he wanted a wide shot that involved not just the eclipsed sun but also the shadow of the moon and the shape of the land around him. </p><p>To get shots like that, his advice is simple: “Zoom out,” especially if you’re on a mountain or other high-up vantage point.</p><p>For his famous photo, Carmichael was thousands of feet in the air on a Southwest commercial airplane.</p><h2>10. Look around</h2><div type="image" title="Sequence of the 2019 annular solar eclipse." height="1298" width="2308" msid="107670562" hostid="261" sizebytes="37024"></div><p>While your eyes are trained on the sun during an eclipse, there’s a lot happening around you, Carmichael said. </p><p>During the partial periods of the eclipse (before and after totality) shadows take on a distinct crescent shape, there’s a dramatic 360-degree sunset effect, and animals often behave strangely. </p><p>All of these phenomena can make for great photos, Carmichael said. </p><h2>11. Enjoy it</h2><div type="image" title="solar eclipse glasses" height="2354" width="3500" msid="107670563" hostid="261" sizebytes="175298"></div><p>Another total solar eclipse will cross the continental US in 2044, but it typically takes about 1,000 years for the path of totality from a solar eclipse to return to the same spot.</p><p>For most, the April 8 eclipse will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/total-solar-eclipse-chasing-airplane-experience-2017-8">take time to enjoy it</a>.</p><p>"It's a perfect moment to just pause, look up at the heavens and appreciate something that is so miraculous," Carmichael said.</p>

How to take pictures of the 2024 solar eclipse: 11 tips from the pros to snap the most dramatic photos

<ul class="summary-list"><li>You won't want to miss the April total solar eclipse. The US won't see another until 2044.</li><li>But this rare astronomical event falls right in the middle of working hours on a Monday.</li></ul><p>Isn't it just our luck that the most anticipated astronomical event of the year falls on a Monday afternoon when most of us are working?</p><p>The first <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/great-american-total-solar-eclipse-where-view-see-cities-visible-2024-2">total solar eclipse</a> in the US since 2017 is sure to be astonishing, weather permitting.</p><p>On April 8, the moon's shadow will pass over the sun and thrust hundreds of cities from Texas to Maine into darkness.</p><p>Hundreds of schools are closing or letting out early for the event.</p><p>More than 100,000 flights are expected over the next few days as people travel to the path of totality (and for spring break).</p><p>And multiple cities across the US <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/total-solar-eclipse-2024-niagara-region-declares-state-of-emergency-2024-3">have declared a local state of emergency or disaster</a> to prepare for the surge in visitors.</p><p>So, if you're in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/total-eclipse-solar-power-generation-states-outside-path-totality-2024-3">path of totality</a> already, you owe it to yourself to try and get at least a free hour off work to catch the total eclipse on Monday.</p><p>Or if you're within a day's drive, take the day off for a spontaneous road trip with friends. You can check <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-map-nasa-where-when-see-path-of-totality-2024-3">NASA's Eclipse map</a> to figure out where and when totality will be in your location.</p><p>Here are four reasons you can give your boss why you shouldn't be stuck at a desk for this rare cosmic event.</p><h2>1. The US won't get to experience totality again for 20 years</h2><div type="image" title="Total solar eclipse" height="3652" width="5307" msid="109042808" hostid="261"></div><p>Witnesses have described totality as an intense, profound, and even eerie experience.</p><p>David Baron, avid eclipse-chaser and author of the book "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.american-eclipse.com/author/">American Eclipse</a>," tries to see as many as he can. Over the years, he's seen eight total solar eclipses.</p><p>It was his friend, astronomer Jay Pasachoff, who first turned him into an eclipse chaser.</p><p>"He said, 'Before you die, you owe it to yourself to see a total solar eclipse,'" Baron recalled Pasachoff saying to him 30 years ago. "And he said it with such sincerity and such passion that I took him seriously, and I went to see my first total solar eclipse in 1998 in Aruba."</p><p>If you can drop everything to get to the path of totality on Monday (including your nine-to-five), you should, Baron said.</p><p>Since 1998, he's been chasing that awe-inspiring feeling that only totality can give you. The first time he saw totality, he was amazed by the sun's corona and the planets flanking it.</p><p>"I had this visceral sense that I've been transported outside our solar system to some other world, and I was looking back at the solar system" he said.</p><p>And for people living in the US, this opportunity for such an experience won't arise again until the year 2044.</p><h2>2. It's the longest and most visible total eclipse for the US in 100 years</h2><div type="image" title="NASA graphic showing the United States with a dark band stretching from Texas to Maine indicating the path of totality." height="960" width="1920" msid="109042811" hostid="261"></div><p>Several southern states — Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Illinois — will experience a whopping four minutes or more of totality.</p><p>That's nearly a minute longer than the average total eclipse over the last century, which has been 3 minutes and 13 seconds.</p><p>Totality is longer this time because Earth will be far from the sun, but the moon will be close to the Earth, causing the moon to block out more of the sun for longer.</p><p>If you're among the 300 million Americans who don't live in the path of totality, traveling there is worthwhile, said Fred Espenak, an astrophysicist whose passion for solar eclipses earned him the nickname <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mreclipse.com/">Mr Eclipse</a>. He's seen 24 total eclipses in his lifetime, recalling his first one in 1970.</p><p>Espenak started planning his first eclipse trip seven years out when he was just 11.</p><p>"1970 rolled around, I had just gotten my driver's license, and I convinced my parents to let me take the car and drive 600 miles to totality, unchaperoned," Espenak said.</p><p>And it was worth it. "It was so overwhelming," he said.</p><p>"You're standing there and daylight suddenly vanishes in a matter of 30 seconds," he said, later adding that, "It's very dramatic."</p><h2>3. You might get to see 2 planets and a massive comet at the same time</h2><div type="image" title="The green comet 12P/Pons-Brooks streaks through the sky against the dark, starry background of space." height="1080" width="1921" msid="109042813" hostid="261"></div><p>There's a chance that eclipse watchers might get to see four <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-2024-total-solar-eclipse-cool-best-special-nasa-2024-1">astronomical events</a> in one on April 8.</p><p>During the eclipse, the planets Venus and Jupiter will come into view as bright points of light just to the lower right and upper left of the eclipsed sun.</p><p>Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, a.k.a. The "<a target="_blank" href="http://businessinsider.com/how-to-see-green-devil-comet-during-total-solar-eclipse-2024-4">Devil comet,</a>" will also make a rare appearance in the sky during the eclipse.</p><p>The Devil comet only flies by Earth once every 71 years. It's unusually large — as big as Mount Everest — and glows green due to dicarbon in its chemical makeup.</p><p>The darkness afforded by totality could offer a rare opportunity to see this comet during the day, right next to the solar eclipse.</p><p>It will likely be just barely visible to the naked eye, showing up as a tiny gray smudge on the sky between the planet Jupiter and the eclipsed sun.</p><h2>4. You'll have the chance to watch massive eruptions on the sun</h2><div type="image" title="sun coronal mass ejection solar flare" height="1200" width="1200" msid="109042816" hostid="261"></div><p>What's especially unique about this year's total eclipse, is that right now the sun is near solar maximum, which occurs about every 11 years.</p><p>Solar maximum is when the sun's magnetic field flips, triggering more solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and sun spots.</p><p>What this means for eclipse watchers is that you'll have a better chance of seeing these massive, blazing jets of plasma erupt from the sun's surface that will appear as tiny neon-pink spikes.</p><p>Witnessing the power of the sun in this way is an awesome — and humbling — experience, Baron said. For him, the real reason to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-inmates-lawsuit-witness-upcoming-solar-eclipse-2024-4">see the solar eclipse</a> is to be reminded of the bigger picture.</p><p>"It's a useful lesson to learn over and over again — just to be grateful to be alive on this planet and to realize that while we are tiny and kind of insignificant, we're part of something enormous and amazing, and that's the universe," he said.</p><h2>Watch safely</h2><div type="image" title="sudan solar eclipse" height="1677" width="2808" msid="109042818" hostid="261"></div><p>Even if you're making last-minute arrangements to miss work for the eclipse, it's important to make sure you're properly prepared.</p><p>It's unsafe to look directly at the sun during a partial eclipse with your eyes, phone, or camera. The powerful solar radiation could permanently damage your vision or electronics.</p><p>To watch safely, you'll need to wear protective <a target="_blank" href="http://businessinsider.com/%20how-to-safely-watch-total-solar-eclipse-without-special-eclipse-glasses-2024-4">eclipse glasses</a>, use <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tips-how-to-take-pictures-photos-solar-eclipse-2024-2">protective filters</a> for your phone or camera, or use another viewing method, like looking through a welder's glass or a pinhole camera.</p><p>It's only safe to look at the eclipse directly without eye protection during totality, when the moon blots out the sun's harsh rays.</p>

4 reasons to convince your boss to let you miss work for the total solar eclipse

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Eclipse watchers were hoping to catch a glimpse of comet 12P/Pons-Brooks during the total solar eclipse.</li><li>I wanted to get a picture of it, so I reached out to astrophotographer Dan Bartlett for help.</li></ul><p>The weeks leading up to Monday's total solar eclipse became even more exciting when astronomers announced that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/devil-comet-visible-during-total-solar-eclipse-how-see-2024-4">comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, also known as the "Devil comet</a>," might be visible during totality.</p><p>This massive comet is the size of Mount Everest, burns bright green, and gets its name for the horn-like shape of its coma. So, of course, I wanted to see it.</p><p>Not only that — I wanted to try to get a picture of it. But I knew <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/green-comet-ztf-what-look-like-see-photos-2023-1">photographing a comet</a> would be no easy feat. They're unpredictable, moving objects that can either be stunningly visible or near impossible to spot.</p><p>I turned to a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-photos-totality-us-2024-4">professional astrophotographer</a> for help.</p><h2>Advice from a comet photographer</h2><p>Dan Bartlett has taken <a target="_blank" href="https://www.astrobin.com/users/h2ologg/?sub=uploaded">hundreds of photos of comets</a>. </p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-this-astrophotographer-takes-stunning-photos-of-our-solar-system-2019-1">To create his striking images</a>, he uses high-tech equipment, including huge telescopes with sky-tracking scopes, and advanced photo-processing software.</p><div type="image" title="Copet 12P/Pons-Brooks streaking across a dark, starry sky with a bright yellow star shining on the upper left." height="1709" width="2560" msid="109144495" hostid="261" sizebytes="68508"></div><p>Even with his professional skills and equipment, photographing comets can be difficult. Bartlett said he encounters "every challenge you could imagine," from his scope not working to not being able to get the comet in focus.</p><p>As for me, I'm an amateur with only a standard DSLR, a tripod, and my iPhone. But <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-cloudy-weather-2017-8">if the weather was clear</a> and the comet was visible, I'd still have a chance of getting the shot, Bartlett said, as long as I paid attention to three things:</p><p><strong>Knowing where to look. </strong>A comet is hard to photograph if you don't know where it is.</p><p><strong>ISO rating.</strong> Bartlett suggested I set my ISO around 1,000 - 1,600.</p><p><strong>Choose the right exposure. </strong>When photographing comets, your exposure should be short enough that the comet isn't blurry, but the right setting depends on the speed of the comet and the focal length of the camera.</p><h2>Where it all went wrong</h2><p>Even in the darkness of totality, I wasn't able to spot the "Devil comet" with my naked eye or my camera.</p><p>If I'd had a telescope or binoculars, I might have been able to use them to locate the comet on the horizon, and then direct my camera's zoom lens toward it. But instead, I shot vaguely in the direction of where I thought the comet might be, and only captured darkness.</p><p>Plus, I was amazed by how quickly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-map-nasa-where-when-see-path-of-totality-2024-3">totality</a> whizzed by. During this window, I was also trying to snap photos of the sun's corona, which left me only about one minute to search for the comet and adjust my camera settings before the sun began to emerge from the moon's shadow.</p><p>All in all, I learned that photographing a comet with a standard DSLR is tricky. Ideally, you should use a telescope with a sky tracking scope to help pinpoint its position and zoom in on its features.</p><p>And in general, I wouldn't recommend trying to snap a picture of a comet during a total solar eclipse. The fleeting minutes of darkness afforded by totality make it challenging to locate the comet, adjust your settings, and frame the shot before the sun reappears.</p>

Solar eclipse 2015: the best pictures from across Europe

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Pablo Blazquez Dominguez / Stringer</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>As you may have heard, a total <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/solar-eclipse-2017">solar eclipse</a> is making its way across the continental US today.</p><p>You need to wear protective solar eclipse glasses to safely watch the moon cross in front of the sun, as the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-retinopathy-eye-damage-sun-2017-8">sun's powerful rays can cause serious eye damage</a> if they are viewed directly. (There are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-pinhole-camera-viewer-instructions-2017-8">good ways</a> to watch the event without staring at the sun if you haven't been able to find glasses.)</p><p>But one method of trying to watch without directly looking should be avoided, according to Dr. Tongalp Tezel, a retina expert at Columbia University Medical Center.</p><p>Don't try to watch the eclipse through the front-facing selfie camera on your phone, Tezel <a href="http://newsroom.cumc.columbia.edu/blog/2017/08/18/why-you-shouldnt-take-a-selfie-during-the-solar-eclipse/">said in a news release</a>.</p><p>You can <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-2017-how-to-take-photos-of-the-eclipse-2017-8">take photos of the eclipse with your phone camera</a> without damaging the sensor, as long as you don't have a zoom lens attached - there's no danger to the camera itself.</p><p>But your phone screen can reflect ultraviolet light back into your eye, according to Tezel, potentially causing the same damage - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-retinopathy-eye-damage-sun-2017-8">solar retinopathy</a> - that looking at the sun itself can cause. Even taking a selfie without wearing eclipse glasses could reflect the sun's light back into your eyes, potentially elevating the chance of a risky moment.</p><p>"Many people will think it's safe to take a selfie with the eclipse in the background because they aren't looking directly at the sun," said Tezel. "What they may not realize is that the screen of your phone reflects the ultraviolet rays emitted during an eclipse directly toward your eye, which can result in a solar burn."</p><p><a href="https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/how-are-eyes-damaged-staring-sun">According to NASA</a>, symptoms of injury caused by sun damage usually include blurred vision, dark or yellow spots, pain, or loss of vision in the center of the eye. That sort of damage can make it hard or impossible to read or to focus on whatever is right in the center of your view.</p><p>For some people, vision recovers within 24 hours - but there could still be damage to the eye, which could result in later problems. In general, people recover as much vision as they are going to within six months of the event, <a href="http://eyewiki.aao.org/Solar_Retinopathy">according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology</a>.</p><p>If you are within the 70-mile-wide band of totality, you can safely remove your protective glasses once the sun is totally covered. You'll know it's time because you won't be able to see anything with those glasses on. But as soon as beads of light start to re-appear, it's time to protect your eyes again.
