<ul class="summary-list"><li>Humans have been studying <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-2024-total-solar-eclipse-cool-best-special-nasa-2024-1">total solar eclipses</a> for millennia to better understand the cosmos.</li><li>Total eclipses have helped prove Einstein's theory of relativity and led to the discovery of helium.</li></ul><p>On April 8, millions of people across the US will all do the same thing: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reasons-to-see-total-eclipse-convince-boss-miss-work-2024-4">look up</a>.</p><p>In the middle of the afternoon, day will shift to night, as a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-map-nasa-where-when-see-path-of-totality-2024-3">total solar eclipse</a> touches 15 states.</p><p>We know now what causes a total <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/devil-comet-visible-during-total-solar-eclipse-how-see-2024-4">solar eclipse</a>. But our ancient ancestors from millennia ago weren't so certain, and that was bad news for some scientists.</p><p>In the 21st century BCE, China's emporer <a target="_blank" href="https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/eclipse-history">reportedly</a> had two astronomers beheaded for not <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/total-eclipse-solar-power-generation-states-outside-path-totality-2024-3">predicting a total eclipse</a>.</p><p>Over the centuries, total eclipses became less dire and more of an opportunity to test scientific theories and forge <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/helio-year-sun-solar-system-probe-eclipse-events-2024-1">new discoveries</a>.</p><p>Here are seven times a total solar eclipse has helped advance human science.</p><h2>1. Measuring Earth's rotation</h2><div type="image" title="Aerial view of planet Earth covered in clouds." height="1411" width="2124" msid="109088911" hostid="261" sizebytes="77030"></div><p>Some of the earliest suspected records of eclipses <a target="_blank" href="https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/history/">date back</a> thousands of years.</p><p>Some experts have suggested<strong> </strong>petroglyphs or rock carvings found on a monument in Ireland reference an eclipse that took place on November 30 in the year 3,340 BCE. Others have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/08/18/this-5000-year-old-stone-carving-may-be-the-worlds-first-drawing-of-an-eclipse/">expressed</a> skepticism.</p><p>Human-made markings on tortoise shells from China and a Babylonian tablet from over 3,000 years ago may also contain ancient references to eclipses.</p><p>Though these records are open to interpretation, scholars have <a target="_blank" href="https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEhelp/rotation.html">studied</a> historical descriptions of eclipses for centuries. It's how 18th-century astronomer Edmond Halley first realized the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-if-earth-stopped-spinning">Earth's rotation</a> has slowed over millennia.</p><h2>2. Discovering what causes eclipses</h2><div type="image" title="Engraving of  Pericles stands next to Anaxagoras, who is sitting on steps next to columns in Ancient Greece" height="1500" width="2263" msid="109088912" hostid="261" sizebytes="1159624"></div><p>Two modern scholars <a target="_blank" href="https://daily.jstor.org/anaxagoras-and-the-eclipse-the-first-to-get-it-right/">give</a> Greek philosopher Anaxagoras of Clazomenae credit for figuring out the moon's role in eclipses, calling him "perhaps the first empirical astronomer."</p><p>He likely developed his theories after witnessing an annular, or "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/october-solar-eclipse-annular-ring-of-fire-where-how-watch-2023-10">ring of fire</a>," eclipse on February 17, 478 BCE. While he got some of the science right, his overall understanding of the solar system was a product of its time.</p><p>Anaxagoras, for example, thought that air pressure kept the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-living-on-flat-earth-would-look-like-2017-11">flat Earth</a> aloft at the center of the rotating sun, moon, and stars. Despite that error, he worked out the basic mechanics behind eclipses.</p><p>Anaxagoras correctly believed the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-watch-da-vinci-glow-ghostly-shine-moon-phenomenon-2023-5">moon reflected</a> the sun's light. He was also accurate in his theories that when the moon moved in front of the sun, it caused a solar eclipse. Similarly, when the Earth was in between the sun and moon, there would be a lunar eclipse.</p><p>He also used the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-lunar-eclipses-work-earth-moon-red-shadow-2018-7">moon's shadow</a><strong> </strong>during an eclipse<strong> </strong>to estimate its size, but his calculations gave him a much smaller answer than reality.</p><h2>3. Estimating the moon's distance from Earth</h2><div type="image" title="A person is seated looking through a telescope with astrological instruments nearby in Ancient Greece" height="1500" width="2172" msid="109088915" hostid="261" sizebytes="589214"></div><p>On March 14, 189 BCE, a total solar eclipse swept over what is now northern Turkey. Greek astronomer Hipparchus would have just been a child at the time, but it's possible he saw the event.</p><p>Years later, Hipparchus may have used secondhand accounts of that same eclipse to make one of the era's most mathematically accurate estimates of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mind-boggling-nasa-photo-shows-moon-distance-from-earth-2022-10">moon's distance from Earth</a>.</p><p>Though Hipparchus' direct writings are lost, a 4th-century scholar <a target="_blank" href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0021828618817175">detailed</a> how he used the information.</p><p>The astronomer estimated the distance between where the total eclipse was in modern day Turkey and Alexandria, Egypt — where a fifth of the sun showed — to make his calculation.</p><p>Based on his math, Hipparchus offered a few ranges, including a mean distance<strong> </strong>of about 281,387 miles.</p><p>He wasn't terribly far off. The moon is about 238,855 miles away.</p><h2>4. Predicting the path of an eclipse</h2><div type="image" title="A map of England showing the path of an 18th century eclipse" height="2445" width="2000" msid="109088917" hostid="261" sizebytes="708824"></div><p>In the 11th or 12th century, Mayan astronomers made a remarkable prediction for their time: They calculated that a total solar eclipse would occur in 1991, and their prediction was accurate to within a day.</p><p>It would be centuries until humans made a more accurate prediction. In the 18th century,<strong><em> </em></strong><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/edmond-halley-solar-lunar-eclipse-manuscripts-sell-auction-2023-12">Edmond Halley</a>, better known for discovering a comet with his name, made a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/the-h-word/2015/may/03/halleys-eclipse-newtonian-selling-science-history">map</a> predicting the path of the May 3, 1715 solar eclipse with extreme accuracy.</p><p>Others made maps before him, but Halley based his prediction on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/isaac-newton-burnt-notes-pyramids-apocalypse-theology-sold-auction-2020-12">Isaac Newton</a>'s theory of universal gravitation, which helped him pinpoint the eclipse's timing to within four minutes.</p><h2>5. The discovery of helium</h2><div type="image" title="A drawing of several people seated and standing around astronomical equipment in the late 19th century in India" height="1500" width="2175" msid="109088919" hostid="261" sizebytes="650872"></div><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rare-element-arctic-lava-suggest-earth-core-may-leaking-2023-10">Helium</a> is very abundant in the universe but rare on Earth. It took an eclipse for an astronomer to discover it.</p><p>French astronomer Pierre Jules César Janssen had <a target="_blank" href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/how-scientists-discovered-helium-first-alien-element-1868-180970057/">traveled</a> to Guntur, India just for the August 18, 1868 eclipse. He was using a spectroscope, a prism-like device for separating sunlight into a spectrum.</p><p>Janssen saw a yellow line with a wavelength unlike any other element. Around the same time, English astronomer Norman Lockyer developed an instrument for viewing the sun even without an eclipse. He saw the same line.</p><p>Lockyer called the mysterious element helium. It took a couple of decades for scientists to see it on Earth, during experiments on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/italy-skeleton-of-a-roman-killed-steps-from-sea-fled-vesuvius-eruption-2021-12">Mount Vesuvius</a> lava and uranium.</p><h2>6. Proof of Einstein's theory of relativity</h2><div type="image" title="A building holds a large piece of astronomical equipment with a long tube and rectangular box" height="1500" width="2244" msid="109088922" hostid="261" sizebytes="221628"></div><p>Astronomer James Craig Watson was certain he'd <a target="_blank" href="https://www.american-eclipse.com/">found</a> proof of a new planet during the 1878 eclipse. Supposedly located between the Sun and Mercury, Vulcan was only visible when the moon blocked the giant star.</p><p>Several more eclipses passed without anyone finding evidence of Vulcan. In 1915, Albert Einstein <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/mach/science/einstein-showed-newton-was-wrong-about-gravity-now-scientists-are-ncna1038671">explained</a> Mercury's unusual orbit with his general <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/albert-einstein-thought-experiments-2023-10">theory of relativity</a>. It fit the data better than a mysterious, difficult-to-spot extra planet.</p><p>Despite this evidence, Einstein's theory didn't receive scientific proof until the May 29, 1919 eclipse. The physicist had said the sun's gravity would bend light from nearby stars.</p><p>In 1919, expeditions traveled to Principe, an island off the coast of Africa, and Brazil. While the moon blocked the sun, the astronomers took photographs.</p><p>The stars seemed to have shifted locations compared to the reference photos. The apparent new locations showed the sun was bending the light within the measurements that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russell-einstein-manifesto-nuclear-weapons-bombs-danger-2024-2">Einstein predicted</a>.</p><h2>7. Studying eclipses from space</h2><div type="image" title="A large antenna dish beneath a solar eclipse" height="1383" width="2055" msid="109088924" hostid="261" sizebytes="79024"></div><p>Gemini 12 astronauts Jim Lovell and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/buzz-aldrin-thoughts-lunar-module-moon-liftoff-2017-7">Buzz Aldrin</a> were the first humans to see a total eclipse from space. The November 12, 1966 eclipse moved from Peru to Brazil, and the astronauts hovered near the path of totality.</p><p>It was a coincidence that they were close enough to see it, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/a-history-of-total-solar-eclipses-seen-by-astronauts-from-outer-space-180983909/">Smithsonian Magazine</a>. Aldrin's photos were unfocused and a bit disappointing.</p><p>Four years later, TV networks <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8i9qNslaJA">broadcast</a> the "eclipse of the century," full of images of the event. NASA also launched over two dozen rockets to study <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-sunscreen-is-not-enough-to-protect-you-from-sun-2023-9">UV radiation</a> and solar X-rays during the phenomenon.</p><p>The agency still uses rockets to gather data during eclipses and will launch three on April 8.</p>

7 times a total solar eclipse revolutionized science 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Selfies can be a great way to document your <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-2024-total-solar-eclipse-cool-best-special-nasa-2024-1">total solar eclipse</a> experience with friends and family.</li><li>But the changing light could make it difficult to get a good shot <strong>safely</strong>.</li></ul><p>If you're planning on snapping selfies during the total solar eclipse on April 8, you're going to want to dress for success.</p><p>As the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/great-american-total-solar-eclipse-where-view-see-cities-visible-2024-2">eclipse approaches totality</a> and the sky grows darker, the way our eyes perceive light changes, and colors become more muted.</p><p>This is most noticeable four to five <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/total-solar-eclipse-rare-phenomena-to-watch-2024-3">minutes before totality</a>, when the eclipse enters the mesopic vision zone — when it's just dark enough that everything appears grayish and silvery.</p><p>That can lead to some seriously dull selfies.</p><p>That's why experts at Solar Eyeglasses, a solar eclipse glasses company, are encouraging eclipse watchers to avoid wearing neutrals, and sport red and green clothes instead.</p><p>It's important to note that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/can-i-take-a-selfie-of-the-solar-eclipse-2017-8">taking a selfie during the solar eclipse</a> can be dangerous. Even though you're facing away from the sun, harmful UV rays can bounce off your phone screen and into your eyes. <br /><br />But you can do it safely — just make sure you're wearing your <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-approved-eclipse-glasses-brands-2017-8">solar eclipse glasses</a> to protect your eyes from damage, and that your phone camera is protected with a solar filter.</p><p>Or if you want a shot without eclipse glasses, you can safely take them off during totality, when the sun is fully eclipsed. But totality only lasts about a couple of minutes so <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tips-how-to-take-pictures-photos-solar-eclipse-2024-2#:~:text=The%20simplest%20fix%20is%20to,a%20great%20photo%20without%20damage.">be ready and be quick</a>.</p><h2><strong>Why wear green and red during the total eclipse</strong></h2><div type="image" title="A vertical collage of three photos of the same red geranium photographed in different levels of light to demonstrate the The Purkinje effect, with the brightest light in the top image and the lowest light in the bottom image." height="1274" width="640" msid="109046411" hostid="261" sizebytes="25694"></div><p>Green pops the most in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/total-eclipse-solar-power-generation-states-outside-path-totality-2024-3">dim light of a total eclipse</a>. But if you contrast that green with red, it'll be even more striking, a spokesperson for Solar Eyeglasses told BI over e-mail.</p><p>During an eclipse, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reasons-to-see-total-eclipse-convince-boss-miss-work-2024-4?amp">transition from daylight to darkness</a> is gradual enough that we enter an in-between phase where the cones in our eyes — that help us see vibrant colors in daylight — and the rods — that help us distinguish blues and greens in dim light — work at the same time.</p><p>This triggers a shift in our perception of color. The phenomenon is called the Purkinje effect.</p><p>It makes everything appear gray and silvery, as if you're looking at the world through gray-tinted glasses, said Gordon Telepun, creator of the app Solar Eclipse Timer, in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpisePffCd4">video</a>.</p><div type="image" title="A solar eclipsed photographed almost at totality" height="1414" width="2119" msid="109046412" hostid="261" sizebytes="28982"></div><p>For example, reds appear muted. But because your rod cells are working overtime during the dim, mesopic vision zone, green is most likely to stand out.</p><p>Wearing a red and green outfit may create a striking visual contrast in your selfies. In the few minutes before totality, your red clothes will appear darker — almost black — but your green clothes will still look green. Against each other, your green clothes are sure to pop. </p><h2><strong>Other selfie-taking tips</strong></h2><p>There are a few other important things to remember when taking a selfie during the eclipse. </p><p>If you're using your smartphone, be aware that the eclipsed sun will appear quite small in the photo. </p><p>For a closer image, use a digital camera or DSLR instead. Just make sure to protect your camera lens with a solar filter.</p><p>And remember the tenets of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-take-great-travel-photos-solo-trip-content-tips">great selfie-taking</a>: use a selfie stick or tripod, switch to portrait mode or enable live photo mode, and if you have an Apple watch and iPhone <span>use the Bluetooth connection to create a remote shutter so you avoid having to run in and out of the shot with a timer.</span></p>

How to take the perfect selfie during the total solar eclipse 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Eclipse watchers were hoping to catch a glimpse of comet 12P/Pons-Brooks during the total solar eclipse.</li><li>I wanted to get a picture of it, so I reached out to astrophotographer Dan Bartlett for help.</li></ul><p>The weeks leading up to Monday's total solar eclipse became even more exciting when astronomers announced that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/devil-comet-visible-during-total-solar-eclipse-how-see-2024-4">comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, also known as the "Devil comet</a>," might be visible during totality.</p><p>This massive comet is the size of Mount Everest, burns bright green, and gets its name for the horn-like shape of its coma. So, of course, I wanted to see it.</p><p>Not only that — I wanted to try to get a picture of it. But I knew <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/green-comet-ztf-what-look-like-see-photos-2023-1">photographing a comet</a> would be no easy feat. They're unpredictable, moving objects that can either be stunningly visible or near impossible to spot.</p><p>I turned to a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-photos-totality-us-2024-4">professional astrophotographer</a> for help.</p><h2>Advice from a comet photographer</h2><p>Dan Bartlett has taken <a target="_blank" href="https://www.astrobin.com/users/h2ologg/?sub=uploaded">hundreds of photos of comets</a>. </p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-this-astrophotographer-takes-stunning-photos-of-our-solar-system-2019-1">To create his striking images</a>, he uses high-tech equipment, including huge telescopes with sky-tracking scopes, and advanced photo-processing software.</p><div type="image" title="Copet 12P/Pons-Brooks streaking across a dark, starry sky with a bright yellow star shining on the upper left." height="1709" width="2560" msid="109144495" hostid="261" sizebytes="68508"></div><p>Even with his professional skills and equipment, photographing comets can be difficult. Bartlett said he encounters "every challenge you could imagine," from his scope not working to not being able to get the comet in focus.</p><p>As for me, I'm an amateur with only a standard DSLR, a tripod, and my iPhone. But <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-cloudy-weather-2017-8">if the weather was clear</a> and the comet was visible, I'd still have a chance of getting the shot, Bartlett said, as long as I paid attention to three things:</p><p><strong>Knowing where to look. </strong>A comet is hard to photograph if you don't know where it is.</p><p><strong>ISO rating.</strong> Bartlett suggested I set my ISO around 1,000 - 1,600.</p><p><strong>Choose the right exposure. </strong>When photographing comets, your exposure should be short enough that the comet isn't blurry, but the right setting depends on the speed of the comet and the focal length of the camera.</p><h2>Where it all went wrong</h2><p>Even in the darkness of totality, I wasn't able to spot the "Devil comet" with my naked eye or my camera.</p><p>If I'd had a telescope or binoculars, I might have been able to use them to locate the comet on the horizon, and then direct my camera's zoom lens toward it. But instead, I shot vaguely in the direction of where I thought the comet might be, and only captured darkness.</p><p>Plus, I was amazed by how quickly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-map-nasa-where-when-see-path-of-totality-2024-3">totality</a> whizzed by. During this window, I was also trying to snap photos of the sun's corona, which left me only about one minute to search for the comet and adjust my camera settings before the sun began to emerge from the moon's shadow.</p><p>All in all, I learned that photographing a comet with a standard DSLR is tricky. Ideally, you should use a telescope with a sky tracking scope to help pinpoint its position and zoom in on its features.</p><p>And in general, I wouldn't recommend trying to snap a picture of a comet during a total solar eclipse. The fleeting minutes of darkness afforded by totality make it challenging to locate the comet, adjust your settings, and frame the shot before the sun reappears.</p>

I tried to snap a photo of the 'Devil comet' during the solar eclipse. Here's what happened.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Jon Carmichael captured what is considered one of the most stunning photos of a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-2024-total-solar-eclipse-cool-best-special-nasa-2024-1">solar eclipse</a>.</li><li>But getting the  shot of his dreams was no cakewalk. </li></ul><p><em>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with astrophotographer</em><a target="_blank" href="https://joncarmichael.com/108"><em> Jon Carmichael</em></a><em>. It has been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p>I have been dreaming of a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tips-how-to-take-pictures-photos-solar-eclipse-2024-2">specific eclipse photo</a> since I was 12 years old: I wondered if I could get high enough in the sky to see the shadow of the moon moving over the Earth.</p><p>I finally got my chance during the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-maps-time-weather-traffic-brightness-2017-8">2017 Great American Eclipse</a>, but capturing that perfect shot from my dreams was not easy.</p><p>About a year before the eclipse Alaska Airlines announced it had an entire plane flying into the eclipse with just one seat left and it was holding a competition for that seat. It felt like fate.</p><p>I poured my heart and soul into a 30-second video explaining why I should get the seat. All my eggs were in that basket. But when it announced the winner less than a week before the eclipse, I'd lost.</p><p>I can't describe how devastated I was.</p><p>At that point, it was a race against time. At first, I gave into my disappointment and laid in my bed. Then I started looking at commercial flight paths, which involved a <em>lot</em> of math.</p><p>As I looked at flight paths, I realized that a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/southwest-airlines-plane-detour-drop-off-flight-attendant-deadheading-2023-8">Southwest flight</a> from Portland, Oregon to St. Louis, Missouri would travel basically along the eclipse path. I had to be on that plane. But, I'm based in New York, so I needed to buy a last-minute cross-country flight to Portland.</p><p>When I got there, that Alaska Airlines flight I had dreamed of was departing from the next gate. It felt like the universe was torturing me.</p><p>Still, I was determined. When I arrived, I was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photo-international-space-station-hidden-passing-sun-2023-4">equipped with three cameras</a> and a surplus of cash in case I needed to bribe someone for a window seat.</p><p>Then Southwest announced it was delaying the flight. My heart sank. I was going to miss the brief window to witness the eclipse, I thought. But then the flight crew clarified that they were deliberately delaying the flight so it would be inside the moon's shadow.</p><p>I nearly died of relief, then decided to push my luck. I took out all my cameras and made sure the NASA t-shirt I was wearing was clear. I told the crew my whole saga. Lucky for me, the flight crew and pilot <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-photo-eclipse-2018-9#the-pilots-actually-circled-the-eclipse-a-few-times-so-passengers-could-witness-the-once-in-a-lifetime-event-thats-when-carmichael-captured-his-stunning-photo-2">took my mission to heart</a>.</p><p>I was the first one on the plane, and the ground crew even cleaned my window. The pilot did circles at 39,000 feet and adjusted the angle of the plane so I could get the best possible shot.</p><p>To be clear, this was not a private jet. This was a Southwest commercial plane rerouting its flight for my shot — I can't believe I was so lucky.</p><p>After we landed, the real work began. I spent hundreds of hours over the course of a year <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/draggan-ai-tool-altering-photos-like-photoshop-steroids-research-paper-2023-5">editing the more than 1,200 photos</a> I'd taken.</p><p>The <a target="_blank" href="https://joncarmichael.com/108">result</a> has been hailed as one of the most outstanding eclipse photos in history, showing not only the eclipsed sun, but also the shadow of the moon sweeping over the Snake River, the border between Idaho and Oregon.</p><p>Getting that shot really was a childhood dream come true. If I try to reproduce a similar image, again, I'm worried <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-happens-people-struck-by-lightning-chances-2018-5">lightning won't strike</a> twice.</p><p>So instead of trying to force it, I'm going to savor the experience this year.</p><p>After all, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-where-when-see-solar-eclipse-united-states-nasa-map-2023-3">total solar eclipses</a> are a miracle. They only happen because Earth is just the right distance from the sun and moon, so I really want to appreciate that magic during the 2024 total eclipse.</p><h2>What I'm doing differently this year</h2><div type="image" title="Total solar eclipse in the upper right of the photo with the moon's shadow cast down on the mountainous land below." height="1250" width="2000" msid="108530985" hostid="261" sizebytes="84742"></div><p>At first, I considered just enjoying this eclipse in nature with my family. I'm based in New York, relatively close to the path of totality, so it would have been easy.</p><p>But then, Southwest Airlines contacted me about a partnership, and I couldn't say no.</p><p>So now, I'll be on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/delta-air-lines-solar-eclipse-flight-april-2024-2">another flight, high above clouds</a> and unpredictable weather, hoping to catch another spectacular image.</p><p>The difference is, this time instead of being alone I'll be with the people I love: my mom, sister, brother-in-law, and nieces, Alayna and Madelyn.</p><p>We'll be traveling on a flight from Dallas to Pittsburg, which should give us plenty of opportunity to photograph the eclipse with different landscapes.</p><p>I'm keeping my specific ideas to myself, but I will say that the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mississippi-river-dangerously-low-second-year-in-row-army-dredging-2023-9">Mississippi River</a> is an iconic feature of the US that I'd love to highlight.</p><h2>I'm planning ahead, and you should too</h2><p>Even though I'll be on a flight, getting a great photo of the eclipse takes a lot of planning ahead even if you're an amateur shooting with your smartphone.</p><p>The angle of this eclipse means it will be higher in the sky than the 2017 event, making it more difficult to get the sun and the landscape into the same shot.</p><p>I've been spending a lot of time using tools like this Navy <a target="_blank" href="https://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/Eclipse2024#forma">calculator</a> that lets you see the height of the eclipse at different longitudes and latitudes.</p><p>Knowing what the eclipse will look like in various places will help me get the best shot — I hope.</p><p>Regardless of whether I get a great photo this time, or not, being with my loved ones is what really matters to me this time around.</p><p>Flying through an eclipse with Alayna and Madelyn, who are the same age I was when I first became fascinated with the skies, will truly be a full-circle moment.</p>

How I took the 'best' photo of the 2017 American solar eclipse — and what I'm doing differently this year

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Taking a great photo of a total solar eclipse is hard, so I asked a NatGeo photographer for help.</li><li>Babak Tafreshi has been photographing solar eclipses for 30 years. He's seen them on all seven continents.</li></ul><p>Total solar eclipses aren't something you see every day. Monday's eclipse was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-2017-when-are-the-next-solar-eclipses-2017-8">the last one we'll see in the US for another 20 years</a>.</p><p>When they happen, it's natural to want to document them. But getting the perfect shot is challenging. And if you don't take the proper precautions, you can damage your eyes and camera.</p><p>I knew I wanted to take <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-this-astrophotographer-takes-stunning-photos-of-our-solar-system-2019-1">an amazing eclipse photo</a>, but I had no idea what I was doing. I needed some professional guidance. So, I contacted <a target="_blank" href="https://babaktafreshi.com/">Babak Tafreshi</a>, a National Geographic photographer who has been snapping eclipse shots for 30 years.</p><div type="image" title="Total solar eclipse 2024." height="3456" width="5184" msid="109146899" hostid="261" sizebytes="45692"></div><p>With Tafreshi's advice, I was able to take over 50 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tips-how-to-take-pictures-photos-solar-eclipse-2024-2">photos of the eclipse</a> using both my iPhone and my DSLR. Here are the four tips he gave me that made these photos possible.</p><h2>Protect yourself and your gear during the eclipse</h2><p>Make sure you protect your lenses. This goes for your eyes and your camera. Unless you're in the window of totality, you have to make sure you're protecting yourself and your equipment from the sun's harsh rays.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/is-the-solar-eclipse-dangerous-2024-4">It's never safe to look directly at the sun without proper eye protection</a>. Before and after totality, you need to wear eclipse glasses to view the eclipse safely.</p><p>Direct sunlight isn't good for your camera or smartphone either. When UV radiation streams directly into your camera lens, it can cause damage.</p><div type="image" title="A handholding a solar filter for iPhone cameras." height="3024" width="4032" msid="109146900" hostid="261" sizebytes="529122"></div><p>To <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-2017-how-to-take-photos-of-the-eclipse-2017-8">protect your equipment</a> while photographing the partial eclipse, you need to use an ND filter of at least 10 stops, and preferably 16 stops, Tafreshi said. ND filters are like sunglasses for your camera; they reduce the intensity of light coming into your lens. You can buy a solar filter for your smartphone, too.</p><p>I didn't purchase an ND filter for my DSLR ahead of time, so I only used that camera for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-of-total-solar-eclipse-chile-argentina-2019-7">photographing totality</a> — when it's safe to photograph the eclipse without one.</p><p>For photos of the partial eclipse, I used my iPhone camera, which I protected with a spare pair of eclipse glasses. I just held the glasses' lens over my iPhone camera lens, et viola!</p><div type="image" title="Partial solar eclipse 2024" height="2268" width="3024" msid="109146901" hostid="261" sizebytes="15636"></div><h2>Keep calm and use a tripod</h2><p>Solar eclipses are exciting, especially during totality when the moon's shadow completely blocks out the sun and plunges you into darkness.</p><p>For some, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-2024-total-solar-eclipse-cool-best-special-nasa-2024-1">totality is a visceral experience</a>. Your physical reaction to the sudden change in light and temperature can make it difficult to hold a camera steady and focus on getting the right shot, Tafreshi said in an email statement.</p><div type="image" title="A DSLR sits on a tripod with a crowd of people in the background" height="3024" width="4032" msid="109146902" hostid="261" sizebytes="455612"></div><p>"The most challenging aspect [of eclipse photography] for sure is how to control your senses," he wrote. "Because totality affects something very deep within us that is hard to control."</p><p>And he was right. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-happens-during-solar-eclipse-diagram-2024-4">When totality struck</a>, I was overwhelmed by the drop in light and temperature, the beautiful sight of the sun's corona, and the sunset-like colors on the horizon. It took me a moment to catch my breath and refocus on the task at hand.</p><p>Any sort of shaking or vibration of your camera will ruin your eclipse shot, Tafreshi explained. This is especially important to remember during totality when you're using higher exposure. If you anticipate shaky hands during the experience, using a tripod is best.</p><p>I used a 50-inch tripod to keep my camera steady while I took totality shots. It did help keep my camera stable, but I didn't have a remote shutter release to prevent movement while I snapped photos. When you zoom in, you can see that my photos of totality are slightly blurry.</p><div type="image" title="Totality 2024" height="896" width="1413" msid="109146903" hostid="261" sizebytes="6270"></div><h2>Use manual camera settings</h2><p>Cellphone cameras worked fine during the eclipse, but those who used a regular old camera may have learned it's best not to rely on automatic settings, Tafreshi said, especially if you're using a DSLR.</p><p>That's because your camera's sensor may get confused by the sudden drop in light in the last moments before totality, Tafreshi said. Even though totality doesn't cause total darkness, "The drop in light is so fast that we feel it is becoming pitch black," he said.</p><p>Your camera's automatic settings aren't able to adjust to this rapid lighting change quickly. Manual settings offer the dexterity you need to transition from photographing the partial eclipse to totality.</p><p>For example, to capture the final moments before totality (when the diamond ring effect appears), you want to use a shutter speed of about 1/1,000 of a second. But as soon as the sun's last rays disappear, you need to switch to a shutter speed of 0.5 to 1 second.</p><div type="image" title="A photo of manual settings on a Canon Rebel T5i" height="2268" width="3024" msid="109146904" hostid="261" sizebytes="400382"></div><p>When shooting totality with my DSLR, I set my ISO to 100, my aperture to f/9, and used exposure bracketing — a setting that allows you to take multiple photos over a range of exposures at one time. It helps make sure that you don't end up with an over or under-exposed image.</p><h2>Get creative</h2><p>"The best photo of the eclipse is not necessarily a clean, sharp, close up of the image," Tafreshi said. "That is what everybody aims for. Find your own signature and creativity in this unique phenomenon."</p><p>He suggested including interesting elements in the foreground, like other <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/total-solar-eclipse-2024-niagara-region-declares-state-of-emergency-2024-3">eclipse-watchers</a> and their reactions to the event, or a beautiful landscape in the background, like mountains or water.</p><div type="image" title="Silhouetted eclipse watchers stand in front of the Lake Champlain" height="3456" width="5184" msid="109146905" hostid="261" sizebytes="148054"></div><p>When I wasn't shooting totality, I tried to get some shots of the dusky horizon and silhouettes of excited eclipse watchers.</p><p>Jumping between shooting the partial eclipse, totality, the sunset-like horizon, and people definitely challenged my photography skills. But thanks to Tafreshi's advice, I actually managed to get a fairly clear shot of the main event.</p>

A National Geographic photographer gave me advice on photographing the total solar eclipse. Here's how my photos turned out. 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Millions of people in the US will be able to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-where-when-see-solar-eclipse-united-states-nasa-map-2023-3">see a total solar eclipse</a> on April 8.</li><li>Some highly populated US cities are right in the path of the eclipse, so people can easily view it.</li></ul><p>Millions of people will be able to don <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-2017-how-to-know-if-solar-eclipse-glasses-are-safe-2017-8"><u>protective glasses</u></a> and view a spectacular total solar eclipse on Monday, starting around 1 p.m. CT.</p><p>If this sounds familiar, it's because in 2017, a 70-mile-wide band of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-of-2017-total-solar-eclipse-gatherings-across-the-us-2017-8">the US saw a total solar eclipse</a>, while many other areas saw a partial eclipse. People drove across states and gathered near planetariums just to see those fleeting minutes when, in the middle of the day, the sky went dark.</p><p>But the total eclipse coming next week will be even cooler, excited NASA <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/comet-heading-earth-bright-outshine-stars-scientists-c-2023-a32023-3">scientists</a> told reporters at an American Geophysical Union meeting in December.</p><p>"Those of us who've seen eclipses know that you want to see your next one," Kelly Korreck, NASA's program manager for the 2024 solar eclipse, said during a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xrjy_q1AYo"><u>roundtable</u></a> at the meeting.</p><p>She added that having one in such recent memory likely has many people excited for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/helio-year-sun-solar-system-probe-eclipse-events-2024-1">this year's</a>.</p><p>While <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/every-total-solar-eclipse-until-2040-video-2017-8"><u>total solar eclipses</u></a> aren't exactly rare, there are a few circumstances around this upcoming event that make it unique, from its path across the US to an abundance of solar activity to a plethora of scientific projects that NASA and others have planned for the few minutes when the moon will seem to cover the sun.</p><h2>Over 30 million people will be able to see the total solar eclipse</h2><div type="image" title="A cheerleader smiles as she looks up at the sky holding eclipse glasses." height="1333" width="2000" msid="107014321" hostid="261"></div><p>There are three <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-a-solar-eclipse-2017-8"><u>types of solar eclipses</u></a>:</p><ol><li><p>an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/october-solar-eclipse-annular-ring-of-fire-where-how-watch-2023-10">annular eclipse</a> appears as a bright ring around the moon</p></li><li><p>a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-stunning-images-show-sun-obscured-in-rare-event-2021-6"><u>partial eclipse</u></a> only partly blocks the sun</p></li><li><p>in a total eclipse, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mind-boggling-nasa-photo-shows-moon-distance-from-earth-2022-10">the moon</a> seems to cover the sun entirely</p></li></ol><p>In 2017, the continental US had its <a target="_blank" href="http://www.businessinsider.com/when-is-next-solar-eclipse-when-was-last-solar-eclipse-2017-8"><u>first coast-to-coast total eclipse</u></a> since 1918. Portions of 14 states were in the path, but populated cities like Atlanta and Charlotte, North Carolina, were not.</p><p>This year, more people will be able to see the eclipse without having to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/great-american-total-solar-eclipse-where-view-see-cities-visible-2024-2">travel</a>.</p><p>The path spreads from Mexico to northeastern Canada.</p><div type="image" title="usa map with band showing path of total solar eclipse from Texas to Maine" height="960" width="1920" msid="108309749" hostid="261"></div><p>"This is going to be the most populated eclipse in the US, with 31.5 million people able to just walk outside of their homes and experience this event," Korreck said.</p><p>Dallas, Cleveland, and Indianapolis are all positioned for prime total eclipse viewing.</p><h2>The eclipse will last slightly longer than the last one did</h2><p>Depending on your location, you'll have about 3 to 4 minutes to watch the moon blot out <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sunspots-15-times-size-of-earth-solar-storm-into-view-2023-11">the sun</a>.</p><p>That peak of the eclipse, called totality, will last slightly longer than the one in 2017 did, Korreck said.</p><p>US residents who miss this year's eclipse will have to wait another couple of decades for a similar event. The next total solar eclipses visible in the contiguous US will be in 2044 and 2045, but neither will cut through Cleveland or Indianapolis.</p><p>"You're not going to get another eclipse for quite a while," Korreck said.</p><h2>An active sun should make for incredible viewing</h2><p>In 2017, the sun was fairly quiet during the eclipse. As it approaches its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-maximum-could-sooner-than-expected-2023-6"><u>solar maximum</u></a>, it's been spitting out <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sun-more-active-solar-storms-auroras-power-outages-grounded-flights-2023-2"><u>solar flares</u></a>.</p><p>Korreck hopes to see a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-video-footage-shows-sun-solar-activity-increasing-2023-5"><u>coronal mass ejection</u></a> during the eclipse. CMEs are high-speed blobs of plasma that erupt out of the sun's corona, or outer layer.</p><p>"You would see that kind of inky mass just leave the sun at that point in time," Korreck said. "So it would be pretty spectacular."</p><div type="image" title="solar eclipse" height="683" width="1024" msid="107014326" hostid="261"></div><p>If that happens, Korreck said there should be increased <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/northern-lights-aurora-borealis-visible-17-states-including-new-york-2023-7"><u>aurora borealis activity</u></a> a few days later. Even if there's no CME, the images could be more dynamic than in 2017, with more whisp-like prominences radiating from the sun.</p><p>"It should be a very <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sun-images-reveal-creepy-threads-holes-light-bridge-solar-surface-2023-5">complex-looking sun</a>," Korreck said.</p><h2>Balloons, rockets, and citizen scientists will be tracking the eclipse</h2><p>There's a reason solar eclipses are a big deal in the scientific community. "They provide you with the opportunity to do experiments that you cannot do otherwise," Nour E. Raouafi, an astrophysicist with Johns Hopkins University, said during the roundtable.</p><p>An eclipse in 1919 <a target="_blank" href="https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/testing-general-relativity"><u>proved</u></a> Albert Einstein's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/albert-einsteins-theory-of-relativity-notes-sold-for-13-million-2021-11"><u>theory of relativity</u></a>, he said.</p><div type="image" title="huddle of people look up toward the sun while holding pink eclipse glasses up to their eyes in front of a wall of sand colored bricks in desert landscape" height="1500" width="2250" msid="107014328" hostid="261"></div><p>This will probably be the most observed total solar eclipse in history.</p><p>That's because NASA and other institutions will be using radar, balloons, spacecraft, and jets to perform experiments and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mars-solar-eclipse-nasa-perseverance-rover-phobos-sun-2023-10"><u>gather data during the eclipse</u></a>. NASA is interested in tracking changes to density, wind speed, and temperatures at the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-rockets-holes-in-ionosphere-2023-11"><u>ionosphere</u></a> — part of the Earth's upper atmosphere — during the event.</p><p>Unlike the 2017 eclipse, there are now two <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-on-mission-to-touch-the-sun-in-milestone-for-space-exploration-2023-12">sun-scrutinizing spacecraft</a> circling our star. It's an opportunity NASA has never had before — to monitor the sun up close, from two different space observatories, while instruments here on Earth study the eclipse.</p><p>That should give scientists more comprehensive eclipse data than they've ever had.</p><p>There are tons of <a target="_blank" href="https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/citizen-science/"><u>citizen scientist projects</u></a> taking place, too. NASA is hoping people will use their Ham radios, telescopes, cameras, and phones to record images, sounds, and observations during the eclipse.</p><p><em>This story was originally published in January 2024 and most recently updated on April 4, 2024.</em></p>

Why NASA says the total solar eclipse on Monday will be way cooler than any before it

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Even smartphones can get great photos of the total solar eclipse on April 8.</li><li>Scouting a great location and practicing your shots ahead of time is key.</li></ul><p>Whether you’re on the ground or in the sky during <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-2024-total-solar-eclipse-cool-best-special-nasa-2024-1">this year’s Great American Eclipse</a>, you can get stunning photos with a digital camera or a smartphone. You just need to plan ahead a little.</p><p>“The last thing you want is to try to play it by ear when it’s happening because then you’re going to miss it,” astrophotographer Jon Carmichael, who took what's considered one of the most stunning photos of a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-photo-eclipse-2018-9">solar eclipse ever in 2017</a>, told Business Insider. </p><p>Here’s how to get the best shots, according to Carmichael and Andrew Studer, a photographer whose work has been published by National Geographic and BBC Earth, to name just a few.</p><h2>1. Get to totality</h2><div type="image" title="NASA graphic showing the United States with a dark band stretching from Texas to Maine indicating the path of totality." height="960" width="1920" msid="107670550" hostid="261" sizebytes="347604"></div><p>Tens to hundreds of millions of people across the US will get to experience a partial solar eclipse on April 8. However, a smaller percentage will get the life-changing opportunity to witness something called totality, when the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-diagram-2017-8">moon completely eclipses the sun</a>. </p><p>If you’re already in the path of totality, you’re in great shape. If you’re not in the path of totality, you can still take some nice photos but they won't be as dramatic because even if the moon covers 99% of the sun, the sky is still significantly brighter than if the sun is 100% eclipsed.</p><p>“It’s literally a night and day difference,” compared to the partial eclipse that will be visible over a wider swath of the US, Carmichael said.</p><p>Over 30 million people will be in the path of totality, which will move from Texas to Maine. You can check to see if you’re one of them with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-where-when-see-solar-eclipse-united-states-nasa-map-2023-3">this helpful NASA map</a>.</p><h2>2. Scout your spot — then have a backup</h2><div type="image" title="Dark clouds nearly cover a partial solar eclipse." height="1388" width="2161" msid="107670551" hostid="261" sizebytes="18362"></div><p>The most important factor for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-stunning-images-show-sun-obscured-in-rare-event-2021-6">great eclipse photos</a> is something we can’t control: the weather. </p><p>When you’re deciding where to watch the total eclipse, pick your ideal spot, factoring in historical weather patterns for early April, Carmichael said. </p><p>Then, have a backup location if the forecast is cloudy. </p><p>Even if you have to watch the eclipse from the side of the road, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dazzling-photos-rare-ring-of-fire-solar-eclipse-2020-6">having a clear sky</a> is more important than a more picturesque, but cloudy, vantage point, he said. </p><h2>3. Use apps to your advantage</h2><div type="image" title="The diamond ring affect from a total solar eclipse" height="2303" width="2303" msid="107670553" hostid="261" sizebytes="66730"></div><p>There are lots of apps that can help you create a great eclipse photo. </p><p>Studer recommends PhotoPills, which allows you to plot the position of the moon and sun ahead of time. </p><p>Carmichael likes Solar Snap, an app developed by former Hubble Space Telescope Astronomer, Doug Duncan, that acts as a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-2017-how-to-take-photos-of-the-eclipse-2017-8">solar filter for smartphones</a> and lets you use long exposure to get great shots of the sky. </p><p>It's important to have a filter on your smartphone or camera. Otherwise, if you point it at the sun during an eclipse, you could concentrate too much heat on it and ruin the electronics.</p><h2>4. Consider renting equipment</h2><div type="image" title="A total solar eclipse with the moon as a black circle on top of the sun." height="2450" width="1750" msid="107670554" hostid="261" sizebytes="135380"></div><p>It’s possible to get a great photo of the total solar eclipse with just your smartphone or a basic digital camera. But if you want a close-up of the sun and moon, you’ll need a telephoto lens. </p><p>Studer recommends renting one. A 200 millimeter (mm) lens is good for most shots, he said, while a 400 mm lens will reveal even more detail, like the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronal-hole-on-sun-blasts-solar-wind-toward-earth-2023-3">corona of the sun</a> or craters on the moon. </p><h2>5. Go automated</h2><div type="image" title="Camera set up to automatically photograph a solar eclipse." height="1419" width="2112" msid="107670555" hostid="261" sizebytes="38030"></div><p>You don’t want to spend the entire time during the eclipse trying to snap the best photo. You’ll miss the chance to appreciate this cosmic event <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/12-ways-your-smartphone-is-making-your-life-worse-2018-6">without looking through a lens</a> or screen.</p><p>“I guarantee to anybody it will be the most beautiful moment you will ever see in your life,” Carmichael said. </p><p>With that in mind, Carmichael recommends using a tripod and adjusting your camera settings so it can snap photos automatically while you take a moment for yourself.</p><p>The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-totality-corona-simulated-pictures-2017-8">period of totality</a> during this eclipse will be up to 4 minutes and 26 seconds, depending on your location. So you may even snap a few photos hands-on, then enjoy totality for yourself, if you time it right. </p><h2>6. Practice 24 hours before</h2><div type="image" title="A partial solar eclipse appears fire red through thick plums of bushfire smoke." height="1414" width="2121" msid="107670557" hostid="261" sizebytes="24500"></div><p>Once you’ve found the perfect location, get on site 24 hours before the eclipse. </p><p>“It’s really good to spend the day before planning things,” Studer said. </p><p>The sun will be in nearly the same spot it will be in during the eclipse, so use its position to plot where you’ll stand, how you’ll frame your photo, and the angles you’ll shoot. </p><h2>7. This is especially important if you’re taking photographs with a smartphone, which has a delicate light sensor, Carmichael said. </p><p>The simplest fix is to hold a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-approved-eclipse-glasses-brands-2017-8">pair of eclipse glasses</a> over the phone lens to help filter light. Look around</h2><div type="image" title="Sequence of the 2019 annular solar eclipse." height="1298" width="2308" msid="107670562" hostid="261" sizebytes="37024"></div><p>While your eyes are trained on the sun during an eclipse, there’s a lot happening around you, Carmichael said. </p><p>During the partial periods of the eclipse (before and after totality) shadows take on a distinct crescent shape, there’s a dramatic 360-degree sunset effect, and animals often behave strangely. </p><p>All of these phenomena can make for great photos, Carmichael said. </p><h2>11. The Earth and its moon would <a href="https://climate.nasa.gov/climate_resources/89/earth-from-mars/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">appear as</a> bright stars, for example. But a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-stunning-images-show-sun-obscured-in-rare-event-2021-6">solar eclipse</a>? Well, it's a little lackluster. </p><p>Solar eclipses on Earth look the way they do because the size of the moon in the sky is nearly exactly the same size as the sun in the sky. So, when the two align, it's like two halves of an Oreo coming together, which makes for an especially amazing view. But Mars' moons are tiny <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/full-moon-names-meaning-origin-lunar-calendar-2023">compared to Earth's</a>.</p><p>Neither of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mars-moon-phobos-is-dying-2015-11">Mars' two moons</a>, Phobos and Deimos, are nearly large enough to fully block the sun. Phobos looks about a third the size of Earth's moon, and Deimos is even tinier, appearing like a little speck compared to the sun.</p><p>As a result, Mars has what's called annular eclipses or transits, where you can still see most of the sun as one of the moons moves past.</p><p>Earth has its own annular eclipse due to start in southwestern Oregon at 9:13 a.m. PDT on Saturday, October 14. The image is far from breathtaking. Instead, it starts off looking a bit like an overhead projector where someone's finger is obscuring the image. </p><p>Slowly, slowly the dark blob moves across the bright yellow ball. Eventually, the potato-shaped Phobos moves out of frame. Partial solar eclipse on October 25 will be visible from most parts of India

Here's everything you need to know before the sun goes dark.</p><h2>What an annular solar eclipse is, and what causes it</h2><div type="image" title="Sequence of the 2019 annular solar eclipse." height="1298" width="2308" msid="104086962" hostid="261"></div><p>A solar eclipse occurs when <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mind-boggling-nasa-photo-shows-moon-distance-from-earth-2022-10">the moon</a> passes between the sun and Earth, blocking the sun from our view for a few fleeting minutes. When everything lines up just right, with the moon at the right distance to cover the sun's entire disc, we get a total solar eclipse.</p><p>The eclipse on October 14, however, will be an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/watch-annular-ring-of-fire-solar-eclipse-video-2020-6">annular solar eclipse</a>. That's because the moon will be in the distant part of its orbit, appearing smaller in the sky and not fully covering the sun. It will leave a "ring of fire" protruding around its shadow, and the sky won't go completely dark.</p><p>The ring of fire comes from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photo-international-space-station-hidden-passing-sun-2023-4">the sun's chromosphere</a>, a layer of its atmosphere where hydrogen atoms emit a reddish light.</p><p>"That's what makes it so beautiful," Guhathakurta said.</p><h2>Solar eclipses happen every year, but seeing them is rare</h2><div type="image" title="huddle of people look up toward the sun while holding pink eclipse glasses up to their eyes in front of a wall of sand colored bricks in desert landscape" height="1500" width="1999" msid="104086963" hostid="261"></div><p>Some kind of solar eclipse happens about two to five times per year, according to the Natural History Museum. A total eclipse occurs roughly every 18 months.</p><p>They're often over the ocean or unpopulated places, though. It's rare to have an eclipse near you.</p><p>Any one spot on Earth gets a total solar eclipse every 400 years, according to the museum.</p><p>The US gets its next eclipse in April 2024. That eclipse will be total, and it will cut across the eastern US from Texas to Maine.</p><p>After that, the contiguous US won't see another total solar eclipse until 2044, or an annular eclipse until 2046.</p><h2>Where to see the solar eclipse and stand in its 'umbra'</h2><p>The umbra, aka the moon's shadow, is the place to be. That's where you can see the annular eclipse and the ring of fire.</p><p>The umbra will carve a narrow path across the western US, from the Oregon coast to Corpus Christi, Texas.</p><p>About 68 million people live within a two-hour drive of the eclipse's path, according to Alex Lockwood of NASA's Science Mission Directorate. She added that the entire contiguous US will be able to see a partial solar eclipse, though the moon may just barely overlap the sun in many places.</p><p>NASA created a detailed map, below, to show where exactly the umbra of the October eclipse will fall — that's the diagonal line on the western side of the country — as well as the 2024 total eclipse on the eastern side of the country.</p><div type="image" title="map of united states with two thick dark diagonal lines crossing it and meeting in texas representing two solar eclipses shadows" height="1700" width="3400" msid="104086965" hostid="261"></div>You can download a high-resolution version of the map with the exact timing of the eclipse in each city on <a href="https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/5073" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NASA's website</a>.<h2>How to view a solar eclipse without burning your eyes</h2><p>If you look at a solar eclipse with no protection, you could damage your eyes. That's because the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sun-hits-earth-with-2-powerful-x-class-solar-flares-2023-8">sun's ultraviolet radiation</a> can burn your retina, causing permanent damage within about 100 seconds, according to NASA. The manufacturer's name and address should be visible on the product, too.</p><p>The National Park Service advises against using any solar filter that's torn, scratched, wrinkled, coming loose from its frame, or made before 2015.</p><p>Do not look at the sun through a camera, telescope, or binoculars, even if you're wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar filter. According to NPS, "the concentrated solar rays will damage the filter and enter your eye(s), causing serious injury."</p><p>If you don't have a solar filter, you can use a technique called pin-hole projection to watch the eclipse unfold.</p><p>You can do this with your hands, according to NPS: "Cross the outstretched, slightly open fingers of one hand over the outstretched, slightly open fingers of the other hand. With your back to the sun, look at your hands' shadow on the ground. The little spaces between your fingers will project a grid of small images on the ground, showing the sun as a crescent during the partial phases of the eclipse."</p><p>Or you can follow <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/edu/learn/project/how-to-make-a-pinhole-camera/%E2%80%8B" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NASA's guide</a> to make a projector out of card stock and aluminum foil. You can even use a kitchen colander to project a pinhole and watch the moon creep across the sun.</p>
