It will also fuel the study of the corona."This is a monumental achievement for all of humanity. This is equivalent to the moon landing of '69. Now we are basically almost landing on a star," Raouafi said.

People drove across states and gathered near planetariums just to see those fleeting minutes when, in the middle of the day, the sky went dark.But the total eclipse coming next week will be even cooler, excited NASA <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/comet-heading-earth-bright-outshine-stars-scientists-c-2023-a32023-3">scientists</a> told reporters at an American Geophysical Union meeting in December."Those of us who've seen eclipses know that you want to see your next one," Kelly Korreck, NASA's program manager for the 2024 solar eclipse, said during a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xrjy_q1AYo">roundtable</a> at the meeting.She added that having one in such recent memory likely has many people excited for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/helio-year-sun-solar-system-probe-eclipse-events-2024-1">this year's</a>.While <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/every-total-solar-eclipse-until-2040-video-2017-8">total solar eclipses</a> aren't exactly rare, there are a few circumstances around this upcoming event that make it unique, from its path across the US to an abundance of solar activity to a plethora of scientific projects that NASA and others have planned for the few minutes when the moon will seem to cover the sun.<h2>Over 30 million people will be able to see the total solar eclipse</h2><div type="image" title="A cheerleader smiles as she looks up at the sky holding eclipse glasses." height="1333" width="2000" msid="107014321" hostid="261"></div>There are three <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-a-solar-eclipse-2017-8">types of solar eclipses</a>:<ol><li>an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/october-solar-eclipse-annular-ring-of-fire-where-how-watch-2023-10">annular eclipse</a> appears as a bright ring around the moon</li><li>a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-stunning-images-show-sun-obscured-in-rare-event-2021-6">partial eclipse</a> only partly blocks the sun</li><li>in a total eclipse, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mind-boggling-nasa-photo-shows-moon-distance-from-earth-2022-10">the moon</a> seems to cover the sun entirely</li></ol>In 2017, the continental US had its <a target="_blank" href="http://www.businessinsider.com/when-is-next-solar-eclipse-when-was-last-solar-eclipse-2017-8">first coast-to-coast total eclipse</a> since 1918. Portions of 14 states were in the path, but populated cities like Atlanta and Charlotte, North Carolina, were not.This year, more people will be able to see the eclipse without having to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/great-american-total-solar-eclipse-where-view-see-cities-visible-2024-2">travel</a>.The path spreads from Mexico to northeastern Canada.<div type="image" title="usa map with band showing path of total solar eclipse from Texas to Maine" height="960" width="1920" msid="108309749" hostid="261"></div>"This is going to be the most populated eclipse in the US, with 31.5 million people able to just walk outside of their homes and experience this event," Korreck said.Dallas, Cleveland, and Indianapolis are all positioned for prime total eclipse viewing.<h2>The eclipse will last slightly longer than the last one did</h2>Depending on your location, you'll have about 3 to 4 minutes to watch the moon blot out <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sunspots-15-times-size-of-earth-solar-storm-into-view-2023-11">the sun</a>.That peak of the eclipse, called totality, will last slightly longer than the one in 2017 did, Korreck said.US residents who miss this year's eclipse will have to wait another couple of decades for a similar event. The next total solar eclipses visible in the contiguous US will be in 2044 and 2045, but neither will cut through Cleveland or Indianapolis."You're not going to get another eclipse for quite a while," Korreck said.<h2>An active sun should make for incredible viewing</h2>In 2017, the sun was fairly quiet during the eclipse. As it approaches its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-maximum-could-sooner-than-expected-2023-6">solar maximum</a>, it's been spitting out <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sun-more-active-solar-storms-auroras-power-outages-grounded-flights-2023-2">solar flares</a>.Korreck hopes to see a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-video-footage-shows-sun-solar-activity-increasing-2023-5">coronal mass ejection</a> during the eclipse. CMEs are high-speed blobs of plasma that erupt out of the sun's corona, or outer layer."You would see that kind of inky mass just leave the sun at that point in time," Korreck said. "So it would be pretty spectacular."<div type="image" title="solar eclipse" height="683" width="1024" msid="107014326" hostid="261"></div>If that happens, Korreck said there should be increased <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/northern-lights-aurora-borealis-visible-17-states-including-new-york-2023-7">aurora borealis activity</a> a few days later. Even if there's no CME, the images could be more dynamic than in 2017, with more whisp-like prominences radiating from the sun."It should be a very <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sun-images-reveal-creepy-threads-holes-light-bridge-solar-surface-2023-5">complex-looking sun</a>," Korreck said.<h2>Balloons, rockets, and citizen scientists will be tracking the eclipse</h2>There's a reason solar eclipses are a big deal in the scientific community. "They provide you with the opportunity to do experiments that you cannot do otherwise," Nour E. NASA is interested in tracking changes to density, wind speed, and temperatures at the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-rockets-holes-in-ionosphere-2023-11">ionosphere</a> — part of the Earth's upper atmosphere — during the event.Unlike the 2017 eclipse, there are now two <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-on-mission-to-touch-the-sun-in-milestone-for-space-exploration-2023-12">sun-scrutinizing spacecraft</a> circling our star. Why NASA says the total solar eclipse on Monday will be way cooler than any before it

Washington, An astronomer has spotted a <keyword id="10464386" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="little-tiny-speck">little tiny speck</keyword> flying past the Sun which is a recently discovered <keyword id="10464385" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="rare-comet">rare comet</keyword>, as the world witnessed the <keyword id="1450436" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="total-solar-eclipse">total solar eclipse</keyword> this month. This comet was first spotted in satellite data by Thai amateur astronomer Worachate Boonplod on the NASA-funded <keyword id="10464387" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="sungrazer-project">Sungrazer Project</keyword>, as Chile and Argentina witnessed the total solar eclipse on December 14, reports NASA. Around the time the eclipse image was taken, the comet was travelling at roughly 7,24,205 kms per hour, about 4.3 million kms from the Sun's surface. The comet was around 50 feet in diameter -- about the length of a semi truck. It then disintegrated to dust particles due to intense solar radiation, a few hours before reaching its closest point to the Sun. Sungrazer is a citizen science project that invites anyone to search for and discover new comets in images from the joint <keyword id="59844" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="European-Space-Agency">European Space Agency</keyword> (ESA) and NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, or SOHO. Boonplod discovered the comet a day before the eclipse. "He knew the eclipse was coming, and was eager to see whether his new comet discovery might appear in the Sun's outer atmosphere as a small speck in eclipse photographs," the US space agency said in a statement late on Saturday. The comet, named C/2020 X3 (SOHO) by the Minor Planet Center, is a "Kreutz" sungrazer. This family of comets originated from a large parent comet that broke up into smaller fragments well over a thousand years ago and continues to orbit around the Sun today. Kreutz sungrazing comets are most commonly found in SOHO images. To date, 4,108 comets have been discovered in SOHO images, with this comet being the 3,524th Kreutz sungrazer spotted, according to NASA. Astronomer discovers rare comet near the sun during total solar eclipse

<a href="http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/sdo/main/index.html">NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory</a> has been keeping an eye on the <keyword id="24879" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sun">sun</keyword> for three years now, and in honor of that achievement, they have released this video of the changes our star has been through during the last three years.
The video shows the increase in solar flares and coronal mass ejections (which send rivers of matter and radiation out into the solar system). The sun is reaching its 11-year solar maximum and the frequency of these events have been increasing.

SDO's Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) captures a shot of the sun every 12 seconds in 10 different wavelengths. The images shown here are based on a wavelength of 171 Angstroms, which is in the extreme ultraviolet range and shows solar material at around 600,000 Kelvin. In this wavelength it is easy to see the sun's 25-day rotation as well as how solar activity has increased over three years.
The data from the observatory should help researchers better understand what causes these events, and help us predict them in the future.

Four 150N engines on the orbiter-returner combination ignited when they were 230 km away from the lunar surface and shut down after 22 minutes, Xinhua news agency quoted the administration as saying in a statement. According to real-time monitoring data, the orbiter-returner combination entered the targeted orbit successfully. Later, the spacecraft combination carrying lunar samples will conduct orbital correction during its journey to Earth. When the time is right, the orbiter and returner will separate from one another, according to the administration. The Chang'e-5, comprising an orbiter, a lander, an ascender and a returner, was launched on November 24. Its orbiter-returner combination completed its first orbital manoeuver on Saturday. China's collection of lunar samples enters Moon-Earth transfer orbit on its way back to the planet

"So far, I can only make suggestions, because more experimental data is needed. Our vaccine was created on the platform also used for the Ebola vaccine," he was quoted as saying to the Soloviev Live channel on YouTube by TASS News Agency on Saturday. "Experimental data received at that point demonstrate that a similar vaccine would offer protection for two years, maybe more." According to the Russian scientist, Sputnik V is effective in 96% of cases. The remaining four percent of vaccinated persons will have a mild form of the disease with runny nose, cough and slight fever, but their lungs won't be affected. Registered by Russia on August 11, Sputnik V became the world's first coronavirus vaccine. The vaccine was developed by the Gamaleya National Research Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology. Its post-registration trials began in Moscow on September 7, with volunteers receiving the first vaccine on September 9. A total of 40,000 people are involved in the programme. According to interim research results, the efficacy of the Sputnik V vaccine exceeds 95% on the 42nd day after the <keyword id="6700138" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="first-dose">first dose</keyword>, provided that a patient receives the second dose. The <keyword id="6064311" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Geminid-meteor">Geminid meteor</keyword> shower, which peaks this year on the late night of December 13, is the most intense meteor shower of the year, Director of M P Birla Planetarium and well-known <keyword id="10424362" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="astrophysicist-debiprasad-duari">astrophysicist Debiprasad Duari</keyword> said in a statement on Saturday. He said the Geminid meteor shower can be viewed from every part of India if the <keyword id="10424361" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sky-conditions">sky conditions</keyword> are favourable. "While it is expected around December 13-14 night, one can probably also see some meteors on early evening hours of December 14," Duari said. Meteors are bright streaks of dazzling light that one often sees in the night sky and they are often termed as "shooting stars". In reality, when a rocky object, which can be as small as a speck of dust enters the earth's atmosphere with a tremendous speed, because of the excitation of the air molecules and friction, a brilliant streak of light is produced, he explained. During a certain period of the year, one gets to see not one but numerous meteors originating from a particular direction of the sky. These are called meteor showers and in general are caused by the earth's passage through the leftover debris of dust, left behind by different comets as they come near the Sun. In general, comets are mostly made up of ice and dust and when they approach the sun, the ice in them melts leaving behind a trail of dust along its path. As earth, in its yearly journey around sun passes through this dusty region, the dust and rocky substances enters the earths atmosphere, sometimes with speed between 30 60 km per second, and produce a shower of light streaks, called as meteor shower. Since they seem to come from one direction of the sky, the practice is to identify the constellation from which they seem to be radiating and <keyword id="10424363" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-meteor-shower">the meteor shower</keyword> is named after the constellation. Among the various meteor showers, one of the most spectacular is the Geminid Meteor shower which occurs every year around the second week of December. Moreover, at the peak of the meteor as predicted, in the middle of the night of December 13-14, at around 1-2 am, when the Gemini constellation will be overhead in Kolkata, it will provide an opportunity to observe the "celestial fireworks", Duari said. This year, as per the predictions, it may be possible to see 150 meteors per hour given the sky is dark and clear. One should not be alarmed while viewing this "heavenly phenomenon, since these meteors will cause no harm to anything on Earth", Duari said.
