<ul class="summary-list"><li>Humans have been studying <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-2024-total-solar-eclipse-cool-best-special-nasa-2024-1">total solar eclipses</a> for millennia to better understand the cosmos.</li><li>Total eclipses have helped prove Einstein's theory of relativity and led to the discovery of helium.</li></ul><p>On April 8, millions of people across the US will all do the same thing: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reasons-to-see-total-eclipse-convince-boss-miss-work-2024-4">look up</a>.</p><p>In the middle of the afternoon, day will shift to night, as a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-map-nasa-where-when-see-path-of-totality-2024-3">total solar eclipse</a> touches 15 states.</p><p>We know now what causes a total <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/devil-comet-visible-during-total-solar-eclipse-how-see-2024-4">solar eclipse</a>. But our ancient ancestors from millennia ago weren't so certain, and that was bad news for some scientists.</p><p>In the 21st century BCE, China's emporer <a target="_blank" href="https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/eclipse-history">reportedly</a> had two astronomers beheaded for not <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/total-eclipse-solar-power-generation-states-outside-path-totality-2024-3">predicting a total eclipse</a>.</p><p>Over the centuries, total eclipses became less dire and more of an opportunity to test scientific theories and forge <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/helio-year-sun-solar-system-probe-eclipse-events-2024-1">new discoveries</a>.</p><p>Here are seven times a total solar eclipse has helped advance human science.</p><h2>1. Measuring Earth's rotation</h2><div type="image" title="Aerial view of planet Earth covered in clouds." height="1411" width="2124" msid="109088911" hostid="261" sizebytes="77030"></div><p>Some of the earliest suspected records of eclipses <a target="_blank" href="https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/history/">date back</a> thousands of years.</p><p>Some experts have suggested<strong> </strong>petroglyphs or rock carvings found on a monument in Ireland reference an eclipse that took place on November 30 in the year 3,340 BCE. Others have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/08/18/this-5000-year-old-stone-carving-may-be-the-worlds-first-drawing-of-an-eclipse/">expressed</a> skepticism.</p><p>Human-made markings on tortoise shells from China and a Babylonian tablet from over 3,000 years ago may also contain ancient references to eclipses.</p><p>Though these records are open to interpretation, scholars have <a target="_blank" href="https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEhelp/rotation.html">studied</a> historical descriptions of eclipses for centuries. It's how 18th-century astronomer Edmond Halley first realized the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-if-earth-stopped-spinning">Earth's rotation</a> has slowed over millennia.</p><h2>2. Discovering what causes eclipses</h2><div type="image" title="Engraving of  Pericles stands next to Anaxagoras, who is sitting on steps next to columns in Ancient Greece" height="1500" width="2263" msid="109088912" hostid="261" sizebytes="1159624"></div><p>Two modern scholars <a target="_blank" href="https://daily.jstor.org/anaxagoras-and-the-eclipse-the-first-to-get-it-right/">give</a> Greek philosopher Anaxagoras of Clazomenae credit for figuring out the moon's role in eclipses, calling him "perhaps the first empirical astronomer."</p><p>He likely developed his theories after witnessing an annular, or "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/october-solar-eclipse-annular-ring-of-fire-where-how-watch-2023-10">ring of fire</a>," eclipse on February 17, 478 BCE. While he got some of the science right, his overall understanding of the solar system was a product of its time.</p><p>Anaxagoras, for example, thought that air pressure kept the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-living-on-flat-earth-would-look-like-2017-11">flat Earth</a> aloft at the center of the rotating sun, moon, and stars. Despite that error, he worked out the basic mechanics behind eclipses.</p><p>Anaxagoras correctly believed the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-watch-da-vinci-glow-ghostly-shine-moon-phenomenon-2023-5">moon reflected</a> the sun's light. He was also accurate in his theories that when the moon moved in front of the sun, it caused a solar eclipse. Similarly, when the Earth was in between the sun and moon, there would be a lunar eclipse.</p><p>He also used the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-lunar-eclipses-work-earth-moon-red-shadow-2018-7">moon's shadow</a><strong> </strong>during an eclipse<strong> </strong>to estimate its size, but his calculations gave him a much smaller answer than reality.</p><h2>3. Estimating the moon's distance from Earth</h2><div type="image" title="A person is seated looking through a telescope with astrological instruments nearby in Ancient Greece" height="1500" width="2172" msid="109088915" hostid="261" sizebytes="589214"></div><p>On March 14, 189 BCE, a total solar eclipse swept over what is now northern Turkey. Greek astronomer Hipparchus would have just been a child at the time, but it's possible he saw the event.</p><p>Years later, Hipparchus may have used secondhand accounts of that same eclipse to make one of the era's most mathematically accurate estimates of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mind-boggling-nasa-photo-shows-moon-distance-from-earth-2022-10">moon's distance from Earth</a>.</p><p>Though Hipparchus' direct writings are lost, a 4th-century scholar <a target="_blank" href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0021828618817175">detailed</a> how he used the information.</p><p>The astronomer estimated the distance between where the total eclipse was in modern day Turkey and Alexandria, Egypt — where a fifth of the sun showed — to make his calculation.</p><p>Based on his math, Hipparchus offered a few ranges, including a mean distance<strong> </strong>of about 281,387 miles.</p><p>He wasn't terribly far off. The moon is about 238,855 miles away.</p><h2>4. Predicting the path of an eclipse</h2><div type="image" title="A map of England showing the path of an 18th century eclipse" height="2445" width="2000" msid="109088917" hostid="261" sizebytes="708824"></div><p>In the 11th or 12th century, Mayan astronomers made a remarkable prediction for their time: They calculated that a total solar eclipse would occur in 1991, and their prediction was accurate to within a day.</p><p>It would be centuries until humans made a more accurate prediction. In the 18th century,<strong><em> </em></strong><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/edmond-halley-solar-lunar-eclipse-manuscripts-sell-auction-2023-12">Edmond Halley</a>, better known for discovering a comet with his name, made a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/the-h-word/2015/may/03/halleys-eclipse-newtonian-selling-science-history">map</a> predicting the path of the May 3, 1715 solar eclipse with extreme accuracy.</p><p>Others made maps before him, but Halley based his prediction on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/isaac-newton-burnt-notes-pyramids-apocalypse-theology-sold-auction-2020-12">Isaac Newton</a>'s theory of universal gravitation, which helped him pinpoint the eclipse's timing to within four minutes.</p><h2>5. The discovery of helium</h2><div type="image" title="A drawing of several people seated and standing around astronomical equipment in the late 19th century in India" height="1500" width="2175" msid="109088919" hostid="261" sizebytes="650872"></div><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rare-element-arctic-lava-suggest-earth-core-may-leaking-2023-10">Helium</a> is very abundant in the universe but rare on Earth. It took an eclipse for an astronomer to discover it.</p><p>French astronomer Pierre Jules César Janssen had <a target="_blank" href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/how-scientists-discovered-helium-first-alien-element-1868-180970057/">traveled</a> to Guntur, India just for the August 18, 1868 eclipse. He was using a spectroscope, a prism-like device for separating sunlight into a spectrum.</p><p>Janssen saw a yellow line with a wavelength unlike any other element. Around the same time, English astronomer Norman Lockyer developed an instrument for viewing the sun even without an eclipse. He saw the same line.</p><p>Lockyer called the mysterious element helium. It took a couple of decades for scientists to see it on Earth, during experiments on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/italy-skeleton-of-a-roman-killed-steps-from-sea-fled-vesuvius-eruption-2021-12">Mount Vesuvius</a> lava and uranium.</p><h2>6. Proof of Einstein's theory of relativity</h2><div type="image" title="A building holds a large piece of astronomical equipment with a long tube and rectangular box" height="1500" width="2244" msid="109088922" hostid="261" sizebytes="221628"></div><p>Astronomer James Craig Watson was certain he'd <a target="_blank" href="https://www.american-eclipse.com/">found</a> proof of a new planet during the 1878 eclipse. Supposedly located between the Sun and Mercury, Vulcan was only visible when the moon blocked the giant star.</p><p>Several more eclipses passed without anyone finding evidence of Vulcan. In 1915, Albert Einstein <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/mach/science/einstein-showed-newton-was-wrong-about-gravity-now-scientists-are-ncna1038671">explained</a> Mercury's unusual orbit with his general <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/albert-einstein-thought-experiments-2023-10">theory of relativity</a>. It fit the data better than a mysterious, difficult-to-spot extra planet.</p><p>Despite this evidence, Einstein's theory didn't receive scientific proof until the May 29, 1919 eclipse. The physicist had said the sun's gravity would bend light from nearby stars.</p><p>In 1919, expeditions traveled to Principe, an island off the coast of Africa, and Brazil. While the moon blocked the sun, the astronomers took photographs.</p><p>The stars seemed to have shifted locations compared to the reference photos. The apparent new locations showed the sun was bending the light within the measurements that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russell-einstein-manifesto-nuclear-weapons-bombs-danger-2024-2">Einstein predicted</a>.</p><h2>7. Studying eclipses from space</h2><div type="image" title="A large antenna dish beneath a solar eclipse" height="1383" width="2055" msid="109088924" hostid="261" sizebytes="79024"></div><p>Gemini 12 astronauts Jim Lovell and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/buzz-aldrin-thoughts-lunar-module-moon-liftoff-2017-7">Buzz Aldrin</a> were the first humans to see a total eclipse from space. The November 12, 1966 eclipse moved from Peru to Brazil, and the astronauts hovered near the path of totality.</p><p>It was a coincidence that they were close enough to see it, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/a-history-of-total-solar-eclipses-seen-by-astronauts-from-outer-space-180983909/">Smithsonian Magazine</a>. Aldrin's photos were unfocused and a bit disappointing.</p><p>Four years later, TV networks <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8i9qNslaJA">broadcast</a> the "eclipse of the century," full of images of the event. NASA also launched over two dozen rockets to study <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-sunscreen-is-not-enough-to-protect-you-from-sun-2023-9">UV radiation</a> and solar X-rays during the phenomenon.</p><p>The agency still uses rockets to gather data during eclipses and will launch three on April 8.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years.</li><li>Travelers worldwide will likely head to Spain, Iceland, and Greenland for the event.</li></ul><p>It'll be two decades before the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-2024-total-solar-eclipse-cool-best-special-nasa-2024-1">next total solar eclipse hits the US</a>.</p><p>Another option: hop on a plane to Europe and turn the 2026 total solar eclipse into a viewing vacation.</p><p>Eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler at <a target="_blank" href="http://GreatAmericanEclipse.com">GreatAmericanEclipse.com</a> told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.space.com/most-crowded-places-for-total-solar-eclipse-april-2024">Space.com</a> that up to 3.7 million people likely traveled for the solar eclipse on Monday.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.hotelplanner.com/">HotelPlanner's</a> chief communication officer, Philip Ballard, told Business Insider that the eclipse was a major revenue generator for many cities. For places like Austin, Texas, and Rochester, New York, it could have created $1 billion in revenue, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.vox.com/24121414/solar-eclipse-power-awe">Vox</a> reported.</p><p>"I would say the total solar eclipse has become a global phenomenon," Ballard said.</p><p>Ballard added that the next <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-photos-totality-us-2024-4">solar eclipse</a>, which will pass through Iceland, Greenland, and Spain on August 12, 2026, could result in similar tourism and revenue influxes.</p><p>And if travelers are considering a trip to Europe for the solar eclipse, Ballard recommends planning your trip now.</p><div type="image" title="beach mallorca" height="1124" width="1500" msid="109204998" hostid="261" sizebytes="181458"></div><h2>Determine your eclipse viewing destination</h2><p>According to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.space.com/total-solar-eclipse-2026-a-complete-guide">Space.com</a>, 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years. Its path will go through Greenland, parts of western Iceland, and northern Spain.</p><p>Choosing where to watch the eclipse will be a tough and important decision for travelers.</p><p>Iceland and Greenland have some positives. These regions will experience longer totality times, so viewers can watch the eclipse longer. Plus, the sun will be higher in the sky, so finding a spot to watch the eclipse will be less challenging, Space.com reported.</p><p>The downside is that these regions are more likely to be cloudy, according to the outlet.</p><p>While parts of Spain are likely to offer clearer skies, the eclipse's timing will be shorter and closer to the horizon, which means travelers will need to plan and track down a viewing location with unobstructed views of the western horizon, Space.com reported.</p><p>Regardless of the destination, according to the outlet, one bonus is that the strongest meteor shower in the Northern Hemisphere will happen the following night, so travelers can pack two events into one trip.</p><h2>Book flights and hotels far in advance</h2><p>Ballard encouraged people to book their hotels in their destination of choice as far in advance as possible.</p><p>"You should start looking now and booking hotels now because those cities in the path are already going to be at peak season," Ballard said.</p><p>Ballard said it's similar to when a Super Bowl city is determined or a Taylor Swift tour date is announced — you immediately see spikes in bookings. He predicts hotel occupancy rates will hit near-record highs, and room prices may double around the solar eclipse date.</p><p>Ballard's general rule of thumb is to book international travel at least three months in advance, but since this is such an anticipated event, booking earlier is smart. His advice is to start discussing plans with friends and family. A handful of tour companies have seen the increased interest in the solar eclipse and launched tours designed around the event.</p><p>These tours will have predetermined locations to view the eclipse, hotel blocks reserved, and itineraries highlighting both the region and the eclipse.</p><p>However, these can sell out quickly. For example, <a target="_blank" href="https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-travel/spain2026/">Space and Telescope</a> created an 11-day tour of Spain around viewing the 2026 solar eclipse. The tour has already sold out as of Wednesday, and the waitlist is full.</p><p>Other operators, such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wildernesstravel.com/trip/total-solar-eclipse-2026-northern-spain/">Wilderness Travel</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.eclipsetraveler.com/tour/2026-spain-9-nights-total-solar-eclipse-journey/">Eclipse Traveler,</a> have similar itineraries for the total eclipse in 2026.</p>

Washington, An astronomer has spotted a <keyword id="10464386" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="little-tiny-speck">little tiny speck</keyword> flying past the Sun which is a recently discovered <keyword id="10464385" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="rare-comet">rare comet</keyword>, as the world witnessed the <keyword id="1450436" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="total-solar-eclipse">total solar eclipse</keyword> this month.<br /><br />This comet was first spotted in satellite data by Thai amateur astronomer Worachate Boonplod on the NASA-funded <keyword id="10464387" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="sungrazer-project">Sungrazer Project</keyword>, as Chile and Argentina witnessed the total solar eclipse on December 14, reports NASA.<br /><br />Around the time the eclipse image was taken, the comet was travelling at roughly 7,24,205 kms per hour, about 4.3 million kms from the Sun's surface.<br /><br />The comet was around 50 feet in diameter -- about the length of a semi truck. He executive produced "Melodrama" and cowrote nearly every song on the tracklist, save for "Homemade Dynamite."</p><p>"Solar Power" is primarily driven by a choppy strumming pattern on acoustic guitar, vaguely reminiscent of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFCL6f7hy2s">"The Louvre,"</a> the fourth track on "Melodrama."</p><p>"I hate the winter / Can't stand the cold / I tend to cancel all the plans," she sings to open the song. "But when the heat comes / Something takes a hold / Can I kick it? Yeah, I can."</p><p>Back in November 2020, Lorde told fans in an email, "The beginning of summer is my favorite time in New Zealand, and this year in particular it feels like a gift."</p><p>The song is notably warmer and more stripped of theatricality than her previous releases. It's probably safe to assume this reflects Lorde's current musical direction. Her previous lead singles, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlcIKh6sBtc">"Royals"</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMK_npDG12Q">"Green Light"</a> - both of which landed in the top 25 of <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-songs-of-the-decade-2010s-ranked-2019-11">Insider's best songs of the decade ranking</a> - were sonically and thematically true to their parent albums.</p><p>A Jack Johnson-esque snare drum arrives in the second pre-chorus, while the chorus boasts triumphant melodies that <a href="https://etcanada.com/news/793747/george-michaels-estate-releases-statement-regarding-those-lorde-solar-power-and-freedom-90-comparisons/">recall George Michael's "Freedom! '90."</a></p><p>In the minute-long outro, every instrument swells in volume while Lorde harmonizes with herself, chanting the titular phrase. <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/phoebe-bridgers"></a></p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/category/phoebe-bridgers">Phoebe Bridgers</a> and <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/clairo">Clairo</a> contributed backing vocals, marking the first time a Lorde song has included any voice aside from her own.</p><p>In <a href="https://youtu.be/If-VG2s0lX8">an interview with Zane Lowe</a>, Lorde called Bridgers and Clairo her "god-tier female vocalists" and revealed "Solar Power" also includes vocals from a few male musicians from New Zealand.</p><p>"I just knew it had to be a gang," she said. "This record, more than any that I've made, isn't just about me. It's my friends and my family and my country, and I knew the sentiments were not just mine alone to deliver... It's fun not to be alone, finally."</p><h2>The song seems to contain a nod to her long-rumored boyfriend, which could mean a loved-up album is on the way</h2><p>In the pre-chorus of "Solar Power," Lorde sings, "No shirt, no shoes, only my features / My boy behind me, he's taking pictures."</p><p>The 24-year-old New Zealand native, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Connor, is reportedly dating Universal Music executive Justin Warren.</p><p>Warren, who is 17 years Lorde's senior, <a href="https://www.nzherald.co.nz/entertainment/lorde-romance-rumours-ridiculous/GYEGM3X3VZI2ZOZSIDDJW5DJNQ/">denied relationship rumors</a> when the pair were first seen in 2016. However, they've been photographed together several times over the past few years, most recently in October 2020, when <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-8886939/Lorde-seen-time-EIGHTEEN-months-kisses-boyfriend-Justin-Warren.html">they were spotted kissing in Auckland</a>.</p><p>Lorde's studio debut "Pure Heroine" deals largely with the fears and ecstasies of being a teenager; "Melodrama" was a pure breakup album, presumably inspired by <a href="https://www.nzherald.co.nz/entertainment/reports-lorde-has-split-from-boyfriend-james-lowe/IJW34YLMGXFBCEYBXATEK6SO4Y/">her split from James Lowe in 2015</a>. </p><p>With Lorde apparently in a long-term relationship, her third album could mark a major departure from the existential, daggered songwriting of her past.</p><h2>The album is also called 'Solar Power' and will be released on August 20</h2><p>Alongside the song's release, Lorde sent an email to fans with the subject line, "Hey, cuties."</p><p>"There's someone I want you to meet," she wrote. "Her feet are bare at all times. She's sexy, playful, feral, and free. She's a modern girl in a deadstock bikini, in touch with her past and her future, vibrating at the highest level when summer comes around. Her skin is glowing, her lovers are many. I'm completely obsessed with her, and soon you will be too."</p><p>"It's my divine pleasure to be introducing you, at long last, to my third studio album, SOLAR POWER."</p><p>Lorde described the album as "a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalizing the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I'm outdoors."</p><p>She revealed that her "best mate," <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CP1eFIIDXSx/">Ophelia Mikkelson Jones</a>, took the cover photo in a spontaneous moment of joy on the beach. The era's music videos were all directed by Joel Kefali, who directed her "Royals" visual back in 2013. </p><p>Lorde also noted how the lead single was released on the same day as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ring-of-fire-solar-eclipse-how-to-watch-2021-6">the year's only solar eclipse</a>, and told fans to "look to the natural calendar for clues" about the album.</p><p>"I want this album to be your summer companion, the one you pump on the drive to the beach. The one that lingers on your skin like a tan as the months get cooler again," she wrote.</p><p>In a follow-up email on Monday, June 21 - the day of the <a href="https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/summer-solstice-2021-traditions-scn-trnd/index.html">Summer Solstice</a> - Lorde announced that her new album will arrive on August 20.</p><div type="image" title="lorde solar power photos tracklist" height="1500" width="1500" msid="83730733" hostid="261"></div><p>"Solar Power" will include 12 songs and two bonus tracks. The titles indicate themes of natural beauty ("California," "Oceanic Feeling"), surrealist storytelling ("Stoned at the Nail Salon," "The Man With the Axe"), spirituality ("Big Star," "Mood Ring"), and epic poetry ("Helen of Troy").</p><h2>The album was partially inspired by Lorde's 2019 trip to Antarctica, but was postponed when her dog suddenly died</h2><p>Lorde began working on new music about two years ago, after she returned from Antarctica in early 2019. She said the trip was galvanized by her <a href="https://www.insider.com/photos-antarctica-ice-melting-highest-temperature-climate-change-2020-2">increasing awareness of climate change</a> and environmental responsibility. </p><p>"When I went to Antarctica, I hadn't yet started writing again after finishing 'Melodrama.' I realized after the trip that what my brain had been craving was a visit to an alternate realm," she wrote in an email to fans.</p><p>"Albums live in their own realms in a way, and Antarctica really acted as this great white palette cleanser, a sort of celestial foyer I had to move through in order to start making the next thing."</p><p>Shortly after she sent that email, <a href="https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/entertainment/2020/12/lorde-s-trip-to-antarctica-inspired-the-name-of-her-new-album.html">Lorde told New Zealand's Newshub</a> that her experience directly inspired the title of her next album.</p><p>"I actually decided on the album name right around that trip," she said. "Just coming back from that trip I thought, this is what it is."</p><p>Lorde was accompanied by her friend Harriet Were, who photographed their journey on film. The shots were compiled into a photo book titled "Going South," which was made available for purchase in limited quantities. </p><p>Recently, fans began to receive their pre-ordered copies, and some noticed a hidden message on the inside cover: "Blink three times when you feel it kicking in - 2021." This has revealed itself to be a lyric from "Solar Power."</p><p>In her email, Lorde described the book as "a sort of perfect precursor to this album in an abstract way," so it's safe to assume that a good chunk of it was written in the trip's immediate aftermath.</p><p>However, she stopped making music in November 2019 when <a href="https://www.insider.com/lorde-email-fans-postponing-next-album-death-dog-pearl-2019-11">her beloved dog, Pearl, suddenly died</a>. As she explained in another email, her grief impacted her vision for the album.</p><p>"I have lost my boy, and I need some time to see the good again, to finish making this for you," she wrote. "It won't be the same work - as anyone who has felt loss can understand, there's a door that opens that you step through, and everything is different on the other side."</p><p>Lorde later said she returned to the studio that December "just for something to do."</p><p>"To my surprise, good things came out. Happy, playful things," she wrote in a May 2020 email. "I felt my melodic muscles flexing and strengthening. Jack came over to work in the studio in Auckland, and I went to LA. It flowed. A thing started to take shape."</p><p>She said they had continued to work remotely during the pandemic, adding, "The work is so f---ing good, my friend. I am truly jazzed for you to hear it."</p>

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>On Tuesday, March 8, the celestial event of the year will take place: a total eclipse of the sun, which happens when the Moon passes between Earth and the sun, blocking&#xa0;the sun from view.<p>This is the only total solar eclipse we'll see this year, but sadly for the US, only people in certain parts of South East Asia will witness&#xa0;the total eclipse.</p><p>Moreover, others, in parts of Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, and America Samoa will experience&#xa0;a partial solar eclipse, when the Moon eclipses part of the sun.</p><p>Though the rest of us cannot observe this spectacular event first-hand, NASA and the Slooh Community Observatory will be hosting live coverage of the eclipse.</p><p><strong>NASA's coverage begins at 8 p.m. ET and Slooh's starts at 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday, March 8. We've provided the live feeds for both at the end of this post.</strong></p><p><strong>The most stunning part of the eclipse, called totality - when the Moon is directly in front of the sun - will take place at approximately 1:59 UT, which is 8:59 p.m. ET, March 8.</strong></p><p>The map below, from <a href="http://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/solar/2016-march-9">TimeandDate.com</a>, reveals who will see the eclipse&#xa0;on March 8. The thin, dark blue line stretching through South East Asia and making its way across the Pacific marks who will see a total solar eclipse, whereas the rest of the shaded regions show who will see a partial eclipse.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>&#xa0;</p><h2>What's going on</h2><p>The reason only a small part of the world can see a total eclipse at one time is because the Moon is about the same size in our sky as the sun.</p><p>Therefore, when the Moon passes directly between Earth and the sun, it casts a small shadow on Earth. There are two parts to this shadow called the penumbra and the umbra, shown below:</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>If you are standing underneath that penumbra, then you will witness a partial solar eclipse, but if you're underneath the much smaller penumbra, then you get the rare treat of experiencing a total eclipse of the sun.<p><strong>Remember that no one should look directly at the sun during a partial eclipse without proper equipment, as it can <a href="http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEhelp/safety2.html">damage the eyes</a>.</strong></p><p>Because the Moon orbits Earth, both the penumbra and umbra move across the face of our planet during an eclipse.
