Greater Noida, Feb 12 () India's flagship motor show Auto Expo came to a close on Wednesday after witnessing over 70 product launches and unveils, recording a total of 6.08 lakh visitors over eight days. This edition of the Auto Expo witnessed over 352 product displays from 108 exhibitors, including eight global premiers, over 70 launches and unveils, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers said in a statement. Keeping in pace with the trend for eco-friendly vehicles, the expo also saw launch of 35 electric vehicles, while 15 concepts were showcased. New participants included Chinese players such as Great Wall Motors and Haima Automobile along with Olectra. The expo, however, missed the likes of Toyota, Honda, BMW, Audi and two-wheeler majors Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor Co, which had stayed away from the show. The biennial motor show had kicked off on February 5 at India Expo Mart here under the shadow of coronavirus outbreak as officials of Chinese participants stayed away from pavilions, on a day when China's Great Wall Motor announced an investment of USD 1 billion to tap into the country's auto market. Reflecting on the experience of the latest edition of the expo, SIAM President Rajan Wadhera said, "Auto shows globally have evolved and transformed from being mere static displays to providing a unique and enriching experience for every segment of the society at large. <ul><li>The lack of <keyword id="584178" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="menstrual-hygiene">menstrual hygiene</keyword> has always been a challenge in India.</li><li>According to UNESCO and Whisper, 23 Million girls drop out of school due to lack of menstrual hygiene and awareness.</li><li>Ergo, P&amp;G’s Whisper is on a mission to raise awareness and educate girls on Menstrual Hygiene Management.</li><li>We catch up with Chetna Soni, Category Leader - Feminine Care, P&amp;G Indian sub-continent to understand the state of menstrual hygiene in India and how Whisper is working towards improving awareness among young girls in the country.</li><li>We also look at Whisper’s marketing campaigns over the years.</li></ul>For the longest time, the Indian society has treated menstruation as a taboo. The word ‘Period’ is usually uttered in hushed voices and years of social conditioning have built a culture of silence around what is a normal biological phenomenon. With young girls and women having limited access to menstrual education and basic sanitary care products, the concept of menstrual hygiene has also remained a challenge in India. And periods don’t stop for pandemics. In fact, lockdowns intensify the impact of household level taboos and stigmas on women -- making it more difficult to manage menstruation without shame and discomfort in confined spaces. In rural India, the unavailability of sanitary napkins coupled with unhygienic and crowded washrooms and toilets in their localities have worsened the situation for women. According to Menstrual Hygiene brand Whisper and UNESCO, the global pandemic has forced girls to abandon sanitary napkins for menstrual pads made of cloth, which has raised the spectre of a looming health hazard. Adding to the misery, the lack of menstrual hygiene education in India is also impacting 23 million girls dropping out of school. Throwing light on how the global pandemic has impacted menstruating people in rural India, Chetna Soni, Category Leader - Feminine Care, P&amp;G Indian sub-continent, said, “These unprecedented times have made it even more difficult to keep girls in school. The premature closure of schools due to the pandemic affected access to education, especially for girls from marginalized communities. This has made them even more vulnerable to dropping out of school completely. Many of these girls would receive pads for period management from school which stopped, leading to them using unhygienic period protection. According to UNESCO, 74 crore girls were disproportionately impacted during the COVID-19 pandemic and it may further affect their return to school. Now more than ever, it is important we ensure girls have access to period protection and education. And support them in every way we can to protect their future.” So, to help these young girls in rural India stay in school during the pandemic, Whisper launched ‘Mobileshaala,’ a free phone-based learning platform. It worked with supporters like Soha Ali Khan, Dutee Chand and Bhumi Pednekar to spread awareness. Shedding more light on the current state of menstrual hygiene in India, Soni shared, “Even today, menstrual hygiene is not considered a priority in India. Out of a total of ~40 crore menstruating women in India, less than 20% use sanitary pads. In urban areas, this number only goes up to 52%. This indicates that nearly half of even urban-based women use unhygienic methods for period protection, making them vulnerable to health issues. In our conversations with various young girls, we discovered that many of them prioritize beauty products but are not ready to spend a fraction of the amount on an essential like sanitary pads. Adoption of sanitary napkins is less than 20% in the country whereas adoption of cosmetics like lipstick is significantly higher at 65%. In addition, there is still a social stigma associated with periods.” Whisper is on a mission to help India achieve 100% menstrual hygiene adoption. It is focusing on 3 A’s to build a better world for menstruating women, which are awareness, acceptance and access. As per Whisper and UNESCO’s studies, about 71% of adolescent girls in India remain unaware of menstruation until they get their first period, adversely affecting their confidence and self-esteem. Whisper aims to help all young girls arm themselves with enough information about menstruation. It launched #KeepGirlsInSchool movement with UNESCO. The partnership is aimed at developing an integrated puberty education module in school curricula and helping young girls in achieving their full potential. In addition to this, the brand Whisper has also taken a pledge to educate 3 crore girls in the next three years. Telling us more about the campaign's performance so far, Soni said, “The campaign truly sparked a national movement which was very encouraging. We will be impacting more than 90 Lakh girls and help keep them in school. Supported by UNESCO this year, we aim to integrate a period education module in the school curriculum in India - to ensure systematic changes ensuring girls are equipped to manage periods and don't miss out on school or their dreams. The movement has been able to drive awareness amongst 5.5 crore people in just one year. The support from key opinion leaders like Mr. Eric Fahlt and Dr. Huma Masood from UNESCO, Bhumi Pednekar, Soha Ali Khan, Dutee Chand amongst others has been testament to a movement we can collectively drive. We see this as a pivotal movement to attain 100% menstrual hygiene In India.” But there’s hope after all. 30 years ago, less than 1 crore women used hygienic sanitary protection during their period. The campaign is also known as the trailblazer for bringing periods out of the closet in popular culture as the government, entertainment industry and social sector became part of the movement. We followed this up with award-winning revolutionary campaigns such as ‘Whispers Break Silence’ and ‘Meri Life Mere Rules’, characterized by local cultural insights and have led to organic consumer movements,” shared Soni. From physical to mental and even spiritual, the ancient practice has had a deep impact on many celebrity fitness trainers and enthusiasts, including Bollywood actors Malaika Arora and Shilpa Shetty Kundra. On International Yoga Day 2020, IANSlife spoke to many celebrity yoga enthusiasts on the transformational power of yoga. Here's what we learnt. I turned to yoga in a similar phase like that where I needed that bit of calm and direction in my life. Some people turn to meditation, others to writing or singing. Everybody has a different outlet, for me I found that in yoga. It really helped me at a very precarious stage in my life and I'm extremely grateful. "It has helped me manage my stress and gives me a certain level of spiritual peace. It helps to take a break from the chaos of our lives and more importantly from the chaos in our minds. It's about working with the mind which controls our body, our thoughts, and overall our mental health. Yoga brings you at the shoonyam quotient of bliss. Yoga is that eternal kiss. Let yoga get maximized, mankind get optimized, this Universe get Mickeymized!" Bollywood actress Soha Ali Khan "Yoga is one of my most preferred forms of exercise - as it has a positive impact on the body as well as the mind. To complement my yoga routine, I also follow a healthy diet and ensure eating a handful of almonds every day. Almonds are considered as Sattvic foods, and are a source of 15 key nutrients like protein, Vitamin E, magnesium etc. Additionally, almonds provide energy and according to Ayurveda, they also help in toning all body tissues." Fitness enthusiast and Supermodel Milind Soman "I am a firm believer in the power of Yoga, and make it a part of my activity. But I also believe it's equally important to practice conscious and healthy eating to reap the best benefits of your exercise. I prefer snacking on healthier foods like almonds, instead of unwholesome or fried snacks. Almonds are light and easy to carry, making them a great snack to consume in between meals." Actress Kirti Kulhari "Yoga has been a major part of my life for the last 15 years and like a lot of us , I was introduced to it through Baba Ramdev ji. I absolutely love the nature of it, owing to the fact that's it's holistic in nature. It brings together spiritual, physical, mental and emotional well-being and balance, and this for me is the true essence of " Being healthy ". And we all know how important this original idea of "health" is in today's times. Yoga's calming and balancing effects are immediate and of course it's regular and consistent practice brings about permanent changes of the highest quality..I couldn't recommend it enough..And I feel that this introduction of "International yoga day" is a brilliant initiative and coming from the land where Yoga comes from, we must not only be very proud but truly make it a very important part of our lives. Rest, one who does Yoga knows, that it's benefits are to be experienced and not so easily described in words. Actress Yuvika Chaudhary "I've just started practicing Yoga and it's a new thing for me. I've been hearing a lot from people that Yoga se hi hoga. Its slow but even if I meditate for five minutes, its relaxing and I really want to go ahead and excel and completely pursue Yoga as I've been wanting to do so for the longest time. I started off with meditation and Surya Namaskar and it has really helped me, especially cope with the lockdown and the circumstances around us. With so much negativity happening around us, I have finally accepted Yoga, although not completely but it's a slow and steady process. My father and grandfather have been practicing Yoga for years but I've never gotten into it. Yoga has been catching on a lot recently but it has been practiced for years in my family. My dad has always told me to practice Yoga and I've always took it for granted but now I really value it." Actress Rasika Dugal "One of my yoga teachers said to me that yoga is as much about how the practice makes you feel when you are on the mat as when you are off the mat. Yoga has taught me how to be gentle with myself and that every small effort counts. It's one of those things that you keep doing calmly and persistently without the pressure of achieving anything and your body surprises you. I also love the detail of it - how one tiny change in the way you execute an aasana can transform the experience and effect of that aasana entirely." Actress Sonnalli Seygall "For me yoga tops the list when it comes to any sort of workout, because it's a complete body and mind workout. I have been practising since my childhood in Kolkata and that time yoga was not even so popular as it is now! Infact I feel sad when I see that yoga has become more popular now in India after the west made it famous with likes of Madonna doing it. We as Indians have such a beautiful, beneficial and old discipline passed down to us, I feel we should definitely incorporate it in our lifestyle. For me personally, yoga is my life! It not only keeps me fit physically and in great shape but also makes me emotionally strong and mentally fit. Especially now with this pandemic , I recommend certain pranayamas and asanas to everyone as it helps you make your lungs stronger and boosts your immunity!" Actress Elli Avram "Yoga is extremely important for your health, it helps you find your inner strength and inner peace. Yoga really calms you down and it helps you to stay balanced. According to me, that is what life is all about. It's about balance. Yoga isn't actually about weight loss, it's basically about teaching you to find your inner strength and heal yourself. Every posture in yoga has a reason, it's for a certain organ in your body, or it's for your blood or your cells, yoga heals you from the inside. Yoga is actually medication, that's how powerful it is and this is something that we all need to understand more. I have never practiced yoga in my life for weight loss, I practiced because I was because I was craving that inner strength."
