In recent years, billions of <keyword id="4743690" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="snow-crabs" source="Orion">snow crabs</keyword> have disappeared from the ocean around <keyword id="20636" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="alaska" source="Orion">Alaska</keyword> due to warmer ocean temperatures which likely caused them to starve to death, as per scientists, <keyword id="82130" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="cnn" source="Orion">CNN</keyword> reported.<br /><br />The finding comes just days after the <keyword id="15260380" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="alaska-department-of-fish-and-game" source="Orion">Alaska Department of Fish and Game</keyword> announced that the snow crab harvest season was cancelled for the second year in a row, citing the overwhelming number of crabs missing from the typically frigid, treacherous waters of the <keyword id="1069977" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bering-sea" source="Orion">Bering Sea</keyword>.<br /><br />The study published on Thursday by scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration found a significant link between recent marine heat waves in the eastern Bering Sea and the sudden disappearance of the snow crabs that began showing up in surveys in 2021.<br /><br />The study's lead author and fishery biologist at NOAA Cody <keyword id="19211557" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="szuwalski" source="Orion">Szuwalski</keyword> said: "When I received the 2021 data from the survey for the first time, my mind was just blown. Everybody was just kind of hoping and praying that was an error in the survey and that next year you would see more crabs."<br /><br />"And then in 2022, it was more of a resignation that this is going to be a long road," Szuwalski told CNN.<br /><br />The US snow crab fishery was closed in Alaska in 2022. Catchers attributed the population decline to overfishing, but "overfished" is a technical definition that triggers conservation measures, experts told CNN -- it doesn't actually explain the collapse.<br /><br />Szuwalski said: "The big take home for me from the paper, and just the whole experience in general, is that historically, fishery scientists had been very worried about overfishing -- this has been our white whale, and in a lot of places we really solved that with management. But climate change is really throwing a wrench into our plans, our models and our management systems."<br /><br />Scientists analyzed what could have triggered the disappearance of the snow crabs beginning in 2020 and boiled it down to two categories: the snow crabs either moved or died.<br /><br />Szuwalski said they looked north of the Bering Sea, west toward Russian waters and even into deeper levels of the oceans, and "ultimately concluded that it was unlikely that the crabs moved, and that the mortality event is probably a big driver."<br /><br />The scientists found that warmer temperatures and population density were significantly linked to higher mortality rates among mature crabs.<br /><br />The reason behind the mortality event was hungrier crabs, as per CNN.<br /><br />Snow crabs are cold-water species and found overwhelmingly in areas where water temperatures are below two degrees Celsius, though they can function in waters up to 12 degrees Celsius, according to the study. Billions of snow crabs disappear from ocean around Alaska: Report

<ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alaska-lakes-belching-damaging-methane-after-ice-melt-nasa-expert-2022-9">Alaska</a> canceled the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russians-sailed-to-remote-alaskan-island-avoid-putin-military-draft-2022-10">Bering Sea</a> snow crab fishing season for the first time ever on Monday.</li><li>Snow <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/octopuses-crabs-lobsters-recognized-as-sentient-beings-in-uk-2021-11">crab</a> populations mysteriously crashed after a baby boom, and scientists suspect warming waters.</li></ul><p>Alaska canceled the snow crab fishing season for the first time on Monday, as crab populations mysteriously plummet.</p><p>An estimated 1 billion snow crabs suddenly disappeared from the Bering Sea, according to <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/fishing-alaska-snow-crab-season-canceled-investigation-climate-change/">CBS News</a>. The collapse deals a heavy blow to Alaska's biggest crab industry, and could drive many fishers out of the business.</p><div type="image" title="fisherman in yellow waterproof jacket holds up giant king crab aboard fishing boat" height="1666" width="2222" msid="94884460" hostid="261" sizebytes="609674"></div><p>"It's going to be life-changing, if not career-ending, for people," Dean Gribble Sr., a crab boat captain who has fished snow crab since the 1970s, told <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/science/environment/alaska-cancels-snow-crab-season-threatening-key-economic-driver-rcna51910">NBC News</a>. "A lot of these guys with families and kids, there's no option other than getting out. That's where the hammer is going to fall — on the crew."</p><p>The snow crab stock looked promising in recent years, sparking hope amid the steep decade-long decline of Alaskan king crab. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game also <a href="http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/static/applications/dcfnewsrelease/1441166194.pdf">canceled</a> the season for Bristol Bay red king crab on Monday — for the second year in a row.</p><div type="image" title="fishing boats in a harbor with snowy mountain in background" height="1600" width="2133" msid="94884464" hostid="261" sizebytes="305700"></div><p>Scientists need to conduct further research to determine what exactly caused this year's snow crab population crash. But the devastation comes three years after <a href="https://arctic.noaa.gov/Report-Card/Report-Card-2019/ArtMID/7916/ArticleID/846/Recent-Warming-in-the-Bering-Sea-and-Its-Impact-on-the-Ecosystem">record heat</a> hit the Bering Sea in 2019 — just as the crab population appeared to be booming.</p><p>Polar regions, including Alaska, are warming faster than the rest of the planet as human-driven greenhouse gas emissions trap more heat and raise global temperatures. Scientists suspect those rising water temperatures are driving the crash of some of the world's most popular crabs.</p><p>"We're along for the ride. It's hard to predict or pretend we could have influences on a stock that is subject to Mother Nature and climate change," Miranda Westphal, an area management biologist with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, told NBC. "They need time and space and favorable conditions to rebuild."</p><h2>Snow crabs had a baby boom, then disappeared</h2><div type="image" title="fisherman in red jumpsuit holds up snow crab" height="575" width="912" msid="94884467" hostid="261" sizebytes="82966"></div><p>The fishing industry was hoping for a snow crab surge this year.</p><p>In 2018, the ADFG recorded the largest juvenile snow crab spike in the fishery's history, according to Westphal, sparking hope that the fishing stock would rise. In 2019, the juvenile population was still high and promising. That year, the Bering Sea saw a historic spike in water temperatures.</p><p>The ADFG didn't conduct a survey in 2020 due to COVID-19. When the agency returned to count crabs in 2021, it discovered "the biggest crash we've ever seen in snow crab," Westphal said.</p><p>The stocks were down 90%, according to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2022/08/21/alaska-crab-climate/">The Washington Post</a>.</p><p>"That was really unexpected. I don't think anyone saw this coming," Westphal told NBC. She thinks the warm waters contributed to the deaths of many young crabs.</p><p>This year, the stock fell below the level the agency requires to open a fishery.</p><p>"Management of Bering Sea snow crab must now focus on conservation and rebuilding given the condition of the<br />stock. Efforts to advance our science and understanding of crab population dynamics are underway," the ADFG wrote in a <a href="http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/static/applications/dcfnewsrelease/1441272349.pdf">statement</a> on Monday.</p><p>In the meantime, fishing communities are taking a hit.</p><p>"Many of them are small family businesses, second- and third-generation fishermen and they are losing their jobs," Jamie Goen, executive director of the trade association Alaska Bering Sea Crabbers, told local news station <a href="https://www.king5.com/article/news/local/alaska-cancels-snow-king-crab-season/281-ca6e3fff-4217-4a4c-b7f3-df61edb752ad">King 5</a>, adding: "It's simply devastating."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Hotter and drier summers are making it harder for French cheesemakers to meet traditional standards.</li><li>Some cheesemakers are still experimenting while others are calling for the rules to be changed.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/france-spend-216m-destroying-excess-wine-as-consumption-habits-change-2023-8">France</a> has famously strict standards for how its quality cheeses are made, but some cheesemakers say they're getting harder and harder to meet.</p><p>French cheesemakers told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/29/world/europe/french-cheese-climate-change.html?campaign_id=9&amp;emc=edit_nn_20231030&amp;instance_id=106443&amp;nl=the-morning&amp;regi_id=185532493&amp;segment_id=148665&amp;te=1&amp;user_id=e3919ac9df4950f24160d87edcafd546">The New York Times</a> that climate change is impacting their ability to follow traditional methods for quality cheeses, including some of the 46 cheeses that carry the prestigious AOP label, which stands for "Appellation d'Origine Protégée" or "Protected Designation of Origin."</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://thecheesewanker.com/lifestyle/the-46-aop-cheeses-from-france/">Cheeses that carry an AOP label</a>, such as Camembert de Normandie and Roquefort, have to meet certain standards and quality levels. Those standards can cover every stage of the cheesemaking process, from the breeds of animals producing the milk to what those animals eat and when they can graze.</p><p>Now some cheesemakers are arguing those rules may need to be changed, as hotter and drier summers are killing some pastures.</p><p>"The whole system was built on the fact that we had certain cereals and hay available — all the rules were written with that in mind," Simon Bouchet, from the association for the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/french-restaurants-reportedly-requiring-diners-spend-5000-2023-8">French</a> goat cheese Picodon, told the outlet. "But with climate change and droughts, all that has been called into question."</p><p>The Times reported that the standards for one specific type of French cheese required cows to graze on a mountain pasture for seven months. However, there was no longer enough grass, so the cheesemakers stopped producing the cheese altogether.</p><p>After a heatwave last year, some cheese associations got permission from the regulatory body to break from the rules. Other cheesemakers are experimenting to see how they can produce the same quality product and still meet the traditional rules, despite changes in the environment.</p><p>"We are studying all the aspects of cheesability," one cheesemaker working on an experimental goat farm told the Times. The farm, led by cheesemakers, is seeing if they can get the same results with milk from goats that graze on drought-resistant crops like sorghum, which is not typically grown in France.</p><p>"We've assembled a jury of experts that will taste test the cheese to make sure it follows all the rules," the cheesemaker said. "They have about 20 criteria of taste."</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-moved-to-paris-healthcare-rent-affordability-2023-9">French</a> cheese is only the latest beloved food product threatened by climate change, which is making <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-climate-change-hurts-our-food-shortages-vulnerable-to-crisis-2022-8">global food systems</a> more vulnerable.</p><p>Changing and unpredictable weather patterns in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/georgia-peaches-climate-crisis-unemployment-farming-peach-state-2023-7">Georgia</a> destroyed up to 90% of the state's peach crop. Some farmers said it was the greatest loss of their peach crop they'd seen in their lifetime. Michigan's iconic <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/biden-campaign-climate-change-ad-targets-rural-michigan-voters-2020-10">tart cherries</a> have faced similar problems.</p><p>And in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alaska-cancels-snow-crab-season-population-collapse-2022-10">Alaska the snow crab season</a> has been cancelled for the second year in a row after billions of crabs seemingly disappeared.</p><p>In a new <a target="_blank" href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adf6035">study</a>, researchers with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the snow crab collapse was likely due to a marine heatwave in 2018 and 2019 that increased "their caloric needs considerably," leading to a mass starvation event.</p>
