<ul><li><keyword id="192487" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anand-Piramal">Anand Piramal</keyword>, the Executive Director of the Piramal Group, invested an undisclosed amount in e-commerce startup <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>.</li><li>Indian e-commerce startup Snapdeal recently announced that it has bounced back from its earlier lows, clocking in a 73% jump in revenue in the last financial year. </li><li>Its consolidated revenues grew to ₹925.3 crores in 2018-19 as compared to ₹535.9 in 2017-18. </li></ul>Anand Piramal, the executive director of the Piramal Group, invested an undisclosed amount in e-commerce startup Snapdeal. Piramal has made the investment in his personal capacity. “Snapdeal’s sharp execution in bringing great selection to the mass market segment in tier 2-3 cities has been quite successful, leveraging the growing Internet penetration in these geographies. Since 2017, Snapdeal’s revenues have grown rapidly with profitable unit economics,” said Piramal. Indian e-commerce startup Snapdeal had recently announced that it has bounced back from its earlier lows, clocking in a 73% jump in revenue in the last financial year. As per regulatory documents filed by Snapdeal, its consolidated revenues grew to ₹925 crore in 2018-19 as compared to ₹536 crore in 2017-18. The e-commerce platform also reduced its losses to ₹186 crore in FY19 as compared to ₹611 crore in FY18. "Anand's investment comes as a significant endorsement for Snapdeal and the transformation the company has undergone over the last couple of years. His appreciation for what it takes to build a company with growing revenues with good economics in a competitive market comes from his own experiences of building and operating large companies in competitive sectors like real estate and financial services,” said <keyword id="219793" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kunal-Bahl">Kunal Bahl</keyword>, CEO &amp; Co-founder of Snapdeal. Snapdeal has come a long way from its very public breakdown in 2016-17. In 2017, Snapdeal, which was actually one of the early e-commerce players in the country, was caught in the grip of increased competition from Amazon and Flipkart. In the last two years, Snapdeal added over 60,000 new seller partners, who have added over 50 million new listings on the platform.

Talking to the Economic Times, Agarwal said that Oyo will be closing $250-300 million round of funding from <keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Softbank">SoftBank</keyword>, which will take its valuation to over $850 million and a step closer to the unicorn club. At a time when most of the SoftBank’s investments in India are bleeding including <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>, Ola and Grofers, Japan’s conglomerate is expecting a big gain from India’s hotel aggregator. Agarwal told the ET, that losses are a ‘part of investment’. What investors are looking at is also growth more than profits. They hate high burn rates but they hesitate to fund a profit making company with slow growth rate. While Oyo seems to be the dark horse of SoftBank’s investments in India, it needs to be checked how it fares in the long run. Oyo’s new initiative <keyword id="4100346" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Oyo-Townhouse">Oyo Townhouse</keyword> will cater to the upscale clientele. The Townhouse model, according to ET news report, will call for investment - an estimated Rs 3.5 lakh in each room, with each property having up to 20 rooms - as the company goes about setting up 250 Townhouses over the next six months. However what needs to be seen if customers prefer Oyo Townhouse versus a Sarovar or a Lemon Tree. Agarwal told ET that Oyo has more than doubled its growth. Its burn rate has come down by as much as 60%, customer service rating is at the highest, and losses have come down from Rs 496.31 crore in March-ended 2016 fiscal to Rs 325.26 crore a year later. The venture, he maintains, has found the right momentum, has shunned incentivisation as a long-term, customer-acquisition strategy, and has the backing of its investors.

global interest rates, tapering, central bank prioritising inflation over growth and increasing interest rate earlier than expected, which might make the market volatile and IPOs may not be as smooth and great as 2021,” said Saraf. If the market mood is uncertain, then the companies planning IPOs are likely to be less confident in seeking high valuations. Startups like <keyword id="143842" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobikwik" source="Orion">Mobikwik</keyword> are already waiting patiently before they launch the IPO to get the best price. Founder Upasana Taku told Business Insider that she is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/mobikwik-founder-says-they-are-not-selling-any-shares-in-the-ipo/articleshow/88392998.cms">waiting for the market conditions to improve</a> even though she has the SEBI approval to launch the IPO. Legendary investor Warren Buffet has said in the past that he has never invested in an IPO. “The idea of saying the best place in the world where I can put money is something where all the selling, and their commissions are higher, the animal spirits are rising, that’s going to be better than a thousand other things I can where there is no similar selling enthusiasm, and the desire to get the deal done and earn some commissions. That’s the best thing to buy in a single day?,” Buffett <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2019/05/06/warren-buffett-on-why-hes-never-bought-an-ipo.html">asked in an interview</a> in May 2019. In 2022, the animal spirits will be lower i.e. the emotional trigger for investments will be contained and therefore the valuations may be cheaper. “Valuation will become a bit more in favour of investors and that is the trend which we will see (next year),” said Saraf. If the IPOs are priced cheaper, it is likely that the headroom for profit is higher for investors, particularly for those who invest for the longer term. While this is general wisdom, it may so happen that the excitement may be lesser for some companies and higher for others. “Consumer tech and BFSI will lead the overall IPOs in terms of sector concentration in 2022,” said Saraf. Saraf doesn’t think so. “I think Indian investors, given how the year 2021 was, they are willing to put money into companies who are still not breaking even or whose profitability may be few years away...and this trend will continue,” said Saraf. The IPO excitement may be softer in 2022 but that can be a good thing for investors

<keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups">Startups</keyword> such as <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/snapdeal-has-started-down-sizing-600-employees-have-already-been-fired/articleshow/57343065.cms">Snapdeal</a>, YepMe and Craftsvilla, have been on a firing spree and employees are sinking into depression, holding themselves responsible for the layoffs. 
 
However, these employees need to keep in mind the fact that the layoffs happened more because of business conditions and not specifically because of their poor performances. 
 <keyword id="6362476" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="investments">Investments</keyword> in startups dropped to $1.4 billion in 2016 as compared to $2 billion in 2015, which led companies in banking, infrastructure and information technology to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/working-for-a-startup-your-job-is-in-danger/articleshow/57405822.cms">tighten their hands</a>. 
 
"It's unfortunate, but layoffs are simply a way of corporate life now. So, maintain a positive outlook and think about what you want to do," Rohit Sandal, HR director at Lenovo, told ET.

Mental health can get adversely impacted if one keeps thinking about the negative things in life, which is why one needs to opt for de-stressing exercises, yoga and meditation. 
 
One can also make good use of this free time to learn something new and enhance their skills, which would have been difficult to manage with the job.

The Rakesh Jhunjhunwala-backed company received a moderate interest from investors as it was subscribed just 3.64 times. “We are seeing a change in IPO [initial public offering] sentiment amid a slight decline in the market, and the last two debutants witnessed profit bookings post-listing, as well we are seeing a decline in the GMP [grey market price] for upcoming IPOs. We may see a discount listing of Metro Brands given that its GMP trades at a discount of 10-15% currently,” said Aayush Agrawal, senior analyst at Swastika Investmart. Analysts at Angel One also expect a weak listing for Metro Brand’s stock, but they hold a positive stance for the long term investment. “On the listing day, we are expecting a slightly weak listing due to the company already commanding higher valuation and fear of [the] new COVID variant omicron (will increase the possibility of lockdown). However, we are positive on stock for the long term on the back of asset light business, strong brands and wide range of products,” said Amarjeet Maurya, assistant vice president – mid caps at Angel One. Also, the company’s financial performance in FY21 was not very great due to COVID-19 restrictions in the country that affected the entire footwear retailing segment. Its revenue from operations declined by 37.75% in FY21. Metro Brands’ IPO may open on a weak note today, GMP at 10-15% discount

Online fashion rental portal <keyword id="3186401" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flyrobe">Flyrobe</keyword>, which is backed by Snapdeal and Freecharge founders, has raised Rs 35 crore in a fresh round of funding led by <keyword id="145350" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IDG-Ventures">IDG Ventures</keyword>. The round also saw participation from Tokyo-based GREE Ventures, its existing investor Sequoia India, Paytm's founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma, and Stanhope Capital chairman Leon Seynave. 
 
Flyrobe has now raised $7 million in investments. 
 
The start-up is based in Mumbai and also has operations in Delhi; it will use the investment to expand its business to five more cities including Hyderabad and Bangalore, while also strengthening its technology, product and business teams. 
 "We want to build the country's largest virtual wardrobe which women can rely whenever they have an occasion," <keyword id="3596378" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shreya-Mishra">Shreya Mishra</keyword>, CEO and cofounder at Flyrobe, told ET. 
 
Flyrobe offers premium designer wear and branded outfits and accessories on rent at 10-15% of the retail price. 
 
"It acts as an experiential marketing platform for designers and it's a great way for customers to experiment with new brands and styles without having to worry about the price tags," said Mishra. 
 
By the end of this financial year, the company aims to grow 4 to 5 times, and triple its designer roster to 150.

Snapdeal-backed fashion start-up Flyrobe gets funding from IDG Ventures and Vijay Shekhar Sharma

This investment in Flipkart is a mix of primary and secondary capital. The investment comes after <keyword id="541988" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Snapdeal">Snapdeal</keyword> cancelled the acquisition deal with Flipkart. Flipkart has also raised capital from three other companies - Tencent, eBay and Microsoft. Now, Flipkart will have in excess of $4 billion of cash on balance sheet. Flipkart bags huge investment from SoftBank Vision Fund; it has over $4 billion in cash now

<keyword id="6481662" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jasper-Infotech">Jasper Infotech</keyword>, the company behind online marketplace <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>, is soon going to in invest in <keyword id="2892247" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Zimmber">Zimmber</keyword>, the on-demand home services platform. 
 
As per reports, The New Delhi based company is expected to invest somewhere between Rs 40 to 50 crore in Rejuvenate Solutions, the Mumbai-based company that runs Zimmber. This figure is for 10% of Zimmber’s stake. 
 
After leading a $36 million (about Rs 240 crore) funding round in hyper-local delivery service PepperTap in September last year, this is Jasper's second investment in the on-demand services space. This again proves that Jasper is increasingly focusing on this fast-growing segment. 
 
However, this move can also be taken as an inspiration from rival firm Amazon, as it’s just been two months that Amazon led a Rs 150-crore funding round in home services startup Housejoy. 
 
"Zimmber is an attractive investment opportunity and we are in active discussion with multiple investors," Anubhab Goel, cofounder and chief executive officer of Zimmber, told ET while declining to comment further. 
 
Snapdeal is presently valued at about $5 billion, after raising $500 million from Foxconn, Alibaba Group and SoftBank in August last year and buying digital payments platform FreeCharge for $400-450 million in April last year. This was the largest buyout done in the Indian consumer internet sector.

Snapdeal’s promoter Jasper Infotech eyes on-demand home services platform

<keyword id="6481662" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jasper-Infotech">Jasper Infotech</keyword>, the owner of <keyword id="1705292" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-e-commerce">Indian e-commerce</keyword> giant <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">SnapDeal</keyword>, is closer to cutting a deal with Japan's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/softbank-may-pick-up-minority-stake-in-vodafone-india-heres-the-latest-development/articleshow/57306703.cms">SoftBank Corp</a>, its largest shareholder. The deal would be a lifeline to the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/snapdeal-has-started-down-sizing-600-employees-have-already-been-fired/articleshow/57343065.cms">struggling</a> Jasper, but could drag its valuation to under $3 billion, down by half. 
 <keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Softbank">SoftBank</keyword> is looking forward to an investment of $100-150 million in Jasper, which would be done in parts, three people in the know told ET, while as per another source, the overall investment could be as high as $300 million.

If the transaction takes place, SnapDeal would become the latest top-tier Indian Internet company to cut down its valuation, after cab aggregator Ola and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/HSBC-halves-Zomatos-1-billion-valuation/articleshow/52185955.cms">Zomato</a>. 
 
In its last funding round led by Canada's Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan in February 2016, Jasper was valued at $6.5 billion. However, in late 2014 to early 2015, it was valued below $3 billion because of stake sales by shareholders to other investors. 
 
However, industry analysts are of the view that a company raising capital at lower valuations does not necessarily indicate bad times. 
 
"Regardless of valuation, the fact that money is available is a good sign," said Harish HV, partner, India Leadership team, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/25-companies-where-interviewing-is-a-treat-not-a-chore/2-grant-thornton/slideshow/55254138.cms">Grant Thornton India</a>. "It means investors, whether new or existing, haven't yet given up on the company and that there is meat left. It's a sign of bullishness." 
 
As per reports, this fresh funding would come with stricter rules regarding financial control. 
 
"Earlier cheques were written after SnapDeal submitted annual operating plans. Now Soft-Bank will ask for SnapDeal's monthly budgets, approve them, and then remit the funds," said one of the aforementioned sources. 
 
In the recent past, SnapDeal, India’s third largest online marketplace after Flipkart and Amazon India, has seen little growth and has been marred by losses, and tremors in upper management.
