Snapchat now allows you to meditate through its app

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6358096" type="DEFINITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="snapchat">Snapchat</keyword> debuted a flurry of new features last week at its <keyword id="24754" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="snap">Snap</keyword> Partner Summit, which went virtual this year amid the coronavirus outbreak.</li><li>One new feature, Snap Minis, will be integrated into the platform's text conversations through which developers can create ways for friends to coordinate and plan activities together.</li><li>Some of the first Minis to come to Snapchat will allow users to buy movie tickets together, create flash cards and study, and even leave decision-making in the hands of a computer.</li></ul>A new feature coming to Snapchat could make it easier to herd your friends into making a decision about what movie to watch or where to go on a post-quarantine Friday night. Snap is releasing a product designed for allowing users to coordinate plans as a group, integrated into the platform's text chat. Announced at last week's Snap Partner Summit, <a href="https://minis.snapchat.com/">Snap Minis</a> offers a place on the platform for developers to create plug-ins that groups already using the platform for conversations can seamlessly access.Although the feature doesn't launch until later this year, Snap has teased the first set of Minis that will debut. The Minis draw similarities to <a href="https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT206906">apps integrated into Apple's iMessage</a>, through which users can quickly share photos and music, play games, exchange GIFs, and even make online payments.Among the first set of Minis coming to Snapchat, one allows for group meditations through a partnership with Headspace, an effort to prioritize the "social and emotional wellbeing" of users. Some others are quite simple and silly: "Let's Do It" lets a computer make a decision for a group of indecisive friends. "Prediction Master" allows users to make guesses on timely questions about the next NBA championship team or the next successful stock.However, most of the first Snap Minis appear to be designed for a post-coronavirus world. Two of the Minis that seem the most alluring require a lack of social distancing. Atom, a platform for movie tickets, developed a Mini for groups to pick out movies together and individually purchase tickets — once movie theaters open up, of course. There's also a Mini through which Snapchat's millions of teen users can share and compare their class schedules — assuming students will be attending school in-person.Once available, Snap Minis will be available right inside any chat with another user or group. They can be accessed by clicking on the rocket icon on the right-side of the chat screen, the same place where users can currently play in-app Games.Snap's debut of Minis came at its Partner Summit, the invite-only event the company <a href="https://www.vox.com/2019/4/4/18294676/snapchat-conference-new-products-launch-games-original-shows-ad-network">launched just last year</a> to compete with annual developer conferences from tech giants like Facebook, Apple, and Google. He's been using the same turmeric face scrub for years — Kerr told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.newbeauty.com/miranda-kerr-summer-2019-cover-beauty-interview/">New Beauty</a> in 2019 that Spiegel likes to use a turmeric face mask from her company that has peppermint oil in it, because it's "so invigorating." Snap told BI that he still uses it.Kerr said in the 2019 interview that her first impression of her now-husband was that he was "cute," but "wow, his skin is flaky!'"At 6:30 a.m., Spiegel spends some time reading the news — primarily the Wall Street Journal and Financial Times. Around 7:00 a.m., he has breakfast with his family, then heads into the office.When possible, Spiegel also drops his kids off at school. Although he already has his commercial helicopter license, he's currently completing his fixed-wing (airplane) commercial license, Snap told BI.Sundays are set aside to spend time with his family. Lately that involves reading Harry Potter together with his kids, or iRacing. Spiegel built his kids a racing simulator for Christmas, Snap told BI, and his kids also enjoy driving their Cyberquad ATVs, a Cybertruck-esque ATV for kids made by Tesla.

Since March, the conversations around mental health, anxiety, and panic attacks have seen a prominent rise amidst the uncertainty that looms all around. Especially for students who have been subject to online classes during this pandemic and are missing out on social interactions. To help students, the Meditation app Headspace is now set to offer unlimited access to its app to students enrolled in select educational institutes across India for six months. The idea behind the partnership with academic institutions like IITs and IIMs is to ensure students have access to key mental health professionals across the country and facilitate mental health conversations on campuses. "We know how unique and particularly challenging this year is for student communities around the world and we are committed to support them by continuing to expand our Student Plan internationally. Building on a previous fruitful visit in India this March, we are excited to make Headspace Plus available to Indian students enrolled in select IITs and IIMs. We stand ready to help students in India and around the world have easy access to meditation and mindfulness content to manage anxiety, improve their focus and resilience and ultimately be happier and healthier," said Jolawn Victor, Headspace Chief International Officer. I used it as inspiration to practice acceptance and to abate my coronavirus panic at the same time.When I was terrified to travel on an airplane after the first US death from coronavirus? Yup.When the local grocery store had empty shelves, nervous customers, and end-of-days vibes? Yup.When we ran out of toilet paper and were forced to order a bidet attachment on Amazon? Yup — and highly recommended!<h2>But then, things got worse</h2>First, I discovered that my local library was closed. Books are my refuge, so when I saw the bright, blinking sign — LIBRARY CLOSED INDEFINITELY — before I could stock up on books for quarantine, I broke into a cold sweat. (And immediately took my temperature.)Next, multiple cases of COVID-19 were reported in my city, schools were closed, and everywhere, people and small businesses were starting to crumble under the weight of the virus. The cold sweat turned into a heavy weight in my chest, which I thought was another sure sign of the virus. When I saw my friend post <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMY0-4p9P-M">this video</a>, with Italians pleading for the world to take COVID-19 seriously, my panic hit an all-time high.I was stuck in my house, inundated by bad news, and could do nothing to control the spiraling state of the world. In short, I freaked.<h2>Time to panic</h2>I ran outside and began ranting and pacing around my yard like a mad woman. When I looked up to the sky in despair, the clouds above gave me a moment of pause.Two weeks prior, I had spoken with Shamash Alidina, the best-selling author of "<a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mindfulness-Dummies-Shamash-Alidina/dp/1118868188/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1421153891&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=mindfulness+for+dummiesness+for+dummies">Mindfulness for Dummies</a>" and an <a href="https://www.shamashalidina.com/act">Acceptance and Commitment Therapy coach</a>. When I spoke with Alidina, it was a beautiful morning in early March. In retrospect, COVID-19 still felt somewhat like a distant threat, and as we chatted over Zoom, neither of us mentioned the virus.Instead, our talk focused solely on the practice of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, a third-wave therapy intended to help people achieve psychological flexibility through the use of mindful-based exercises and cognitive techniques.Since <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5839459/">research</a> has shown that ACT can help with anxiety and depression, in addition to a range of ailments including <a href="http://ijps.tums.ac.ir/index.php/ijps/article/view/1011">eating disorders</a> and <a href="http://www.scienceerapub.com/index.php/EPL/article/view/342">insomnia</a>, I was wondering if it could help me with my 2020 intention of acceptance.At the time, Alidina assured me that ACT could help me on my quest. In fact, he told me ACT could be helpful to practically everyone — whether they suffer from anxiety, depression, or are simply looking for a way to cope with the stress of daily life.This is because ACT's goal is to achieve psychological flexibility, which he said was "the ability to be true to your values and to take action in line with your values, despite the difficult emotions, thoughts, urges, or sensations that may come up."He said the early days of ACT relied heavily on research, which led to the development of the six flexibility skills of the therapeutic model:<ol><li>Acceptance. (Ahem, working on it.)</li><li>Cognitive defusion (Techniques that will help "unhook" negative thoughts.)</li><li>Transcendent self (The most spiritual element of the therapy, this is the idea that you are not your thoughts, but the observer of your thoughts.)</li><li>Being in the present moment (Also known as mindfulness.)</li><li>Becoming aware of your values (Discovering the direction you want to take in life.)</li><li>Committing to Action (Doing the work.)</li></ol>These skills serve as a road map to achieving ACT's ultimate goal, which is to "live a rich and meaningful life," according to Alidina.Then he gave me numerous exercises, each correlating with a different flexibility skill, to help me on my path to acceptance.<h2>Finding comfort in the clouds</h2>Two weeks later, I stood in my yard, trying to cope with my COVID-19 panic. Then, I saw a floating cloud and was reminded of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.During our chat, Alidina had suggested that I work on finding my transcendental self by meditating on the sky. Remembering this reflective exercise, I sat on my back stoop, closed my eyes, and began to picture my mind as the sky; whenever I encountered a negative thought, I attached it to a floating cloud. The idea behind this particular exercise was to help me realize that my thoughts (the clouds) are ever-changing and unattached, but my true self (the sky) will never alter.<div type="image" title="Washington State, Olympic Peninsula, Olympic National Park, View From Hurricane Ridge, Clouds." height="1664" width="2219" msid="77150326" hostid="261"></div>Using this ACT exercise, I put all of my worries — the spreading pandemic, the health of my elderly parents, the plummeting stock market, the uncertainty of the future, the dying planet, our ineffective president — into different clouds and watched as they floated away. Over time, my breath began to even out and my chest loosened, ever so slightly. After 10 minutes, I opened my eyes, took a deep breath, and realized I felt marginally better.Since this exercise had a positive effect, I decided to turn to another of one Alidina's suggestions: envisioning my 80th birthday party. Who would be there? What would they say about me? What kind of qualities would they use to describe me? These qualities would then become my values, and would serve as a compass to point me in the right direction throughout my life.After completing the exercise, I settled on the personal values of love, learning, empowerment, creativity, adventure, and connection. Stuck in my house, feeling vulnerable and scared, I turned to these values.Looking at the six words I had written on a sticky note, the two values of "love" and "connection" jumped out. In accordance with these values, I began reaching out to family and friends to check in, offer my support, and to send my love during this difficult time. I organized virtual happy hours over Zoom, sent my friends Marco Polo videos and Snapchats, and did whatever I could to find connection during isolation. By employing my values, I not only felt less alone, but I actually began to have some fun in quarantine. Establishing and committing to values was helping me push through the doom and gloom of pandemic.<h2>Still, I still found myself suffering from extreme moments of anxiety. It was during these times, in which I found myself spiraling, when I relied on the second flexibility skill — cognitive defusion — to stop the fearful thoughts from taking over.</h2>As suggested by Alidina, whenever I encountered a negative thought or feeling, I separated myself from the thought by saying "I notice I'm having the thought…" before the actual thought itself.For example, instead of thinking "I'm scared for my family," I would say, "I notice I'm having the thought that I'm scared for my family." Using this technique, my negative thoughts, feelings, and even physical pains, began to have less power over me. It's important to note that my negative thoughts didn't stop, but my reaction to my thoughts changed, which ultimately gave them less power.Which is one of the most important tenets of ACT — unwanted thoughts and feelings will never go away for good. "ACT doesn't focus on symptom reduction," Alidina had explained to me, back in early March. "(It focuses) on what your values are, what actions you're going to take to make your life meaningful, and the skills to be able to accept however strong or weak that feeling is."It turns out, these skills have been crucial to surviving the emotional whiplash that is 2020. Since my conversation with Alidina five months ago, a lot has changed in the world; despite the upheaval, I've adjusted to the new normal. From standing in the line outside the grocery store, to wearing a mask wherever I go, to my standard Friday night Zoom with friends, I've accepted what it means to live with the threat of coronavirus.Still, I find myself struggling with the uncertainty of it all. The end of the year is a long way off, and when I think ahead to what the world will look like then, my heartbeat quickens. It's easy to get lost in the "what-ifs," the "whens," and the "whys." What if someone I love gets it? When will I hug my nieces again? Why did this happen in the first place? In these instances, the only way to avoid panic is to separate myself from my thoughts, which I do by practicing the ACT skills. I've yet to achieve total acceptance — and I'm wise enough to know that might never happen — but being a work-in-progress has gotten me pretty far. After all, it's gotten me halfway through 2020, and that's an accomplishment in and of itself.

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Christophe Morin/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesSalesforce CEO Marc Benioff</div></div></div>When Marc Benioff started Salesforce back in 1999, he pledged to donate 1% of the company's annual revenues, 1% of its employees' time, and 1% of its product value to nonprofit organizations every year. The company has held steadfast to this pledge as it's grown to become the fourth-largest software company in the world, with more than $8 billion expected in revenue this year. But Benioff's social interest extends beyond that pledge. He's been a vocal critic of state legislation that could be used to discriminate against LGBT people, threatening to withdraw business from Indiana and Georgia when they passed such laws.He's also a huge presence in San Francisco, where he grew up and where Salesforce is based - he and his wife Lynne donated $200 million to the University of California San Francisco (a medical school and hospital) to build a children's hospital, and Salesforce has "adopted" 20 public schools in the city, donating $14 million and 10,000 hours of employee time. We talked to Benioff (No. 4 on the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bi-100-the-creators-business-visionaries-creating-value-for-the-world-2016-6">BI 100: The Creators</a>) about the origins of the 1-1-1 pledge, the state of capitalism, and more. A lightly edited transcript of our conversation is below.Matt Rosoff: A lot of people right now look at growing inequality right now and they think capitalism is the enemy, or isn't working. There are two successful anti-establishment presidential campaigns going on right now based on that idea. As a successful businessman, do you have an obligation to change that perception, and how do you do it?Marc Benioff: The antidote to inequality is equality. The question is how do you achieve equality? I believe that for business, which is where I can speak, we have to shift from shareholder maximization to stakeholder maximization. And when we only focus on our shareholders, that's when it becomes very limiting and that's when we can draw fire from other stakeholders.It's not so unusual for me to have a week of meetings that includes not only my employees, not only my customers, not only media, but could also include principals of local K-12 schools, it could include non-governmental organizations or nonprofit organizations, or members of the community. I have many different stakeholders that I have to answer to. I view that as a critical part of my business. That's why when I started Salesforce, on day 1, we put 1% of our equity, 1% of our profit, and 1% of our time into <a href="http://www.salesforce.org/">Salesforce.org.</a> We're tightly integrated between Salesforce and our community. That's the key. The bigger and more successful Salesforce becomes, the more we'll invest in our public schools, the more we will invest in homeless, the more we will invest in public hospitals, the more we will invest into NGOs. Also, we do matching grants for our employees. We will provide $10 million to our employees this year in matching grants, which is a total of $20 million in additional philanthropy. Half of that goes to faith-based organizations, half of that goes to traditional nonprofits and NGOs.This is really how I look at it, business is a very important driver of a successful society. Businesses cannot be extricated or disintermediated from the communities they serve. Businesses who do that will do that at their own peril. They will draw fire. And companies who are integrated will be lauded by their communities and not draw fire. In San Francisco, rarely is Salesforce called out as somebody who's doing something against the city. We're working to make the city better.Rosoff: How did the 1-1-1 pledge come about? Where did you get the idea for that when you were building a startup?Benioff: It really came out of a conference I attended chaired by Colin Powell, now on our board of directors, who said that a business has to do more than make products and sell them. It has to take care of the people in their local communities. This was in 1997, it was called the President's Summit for America's Future, it was part of his America's Promise organization. He had the 500 largest companies there, I'm still not sure how I got there, and he got on stage and said "in your quest for market domination of your industries, don't forget about doing something for other people."At the time I didn't know what the specific answer would be, but General Powell has been a huge motivating factor in my career for almost 20 years.Rosoff: How do you deal with criticism? You get a lot of flak for some of your stands, like the ones you've taken against anti-LGBT legislation in Georgia and Indiana.Benioff: I'm grounded in the values of our company. Those values are trust - nothing is more important than the trust of our customers and also employees. Two is growth, and we're a very fast-growing company. Three is innovation, and we're consistently ranked as one of the most innovative companies in the world, and four is equality. These four values are where I ground myself and if I am going to make a comment, or if I'm going to make a statement, I'm really mostly discussing things in those four areas. That's where I am. A leopard can't change its spots, I can't really become something I'm not, I'm just basically acting out of my experience in business. I'll be 52 years old this year, I've been in business since I was 15 years old, and I know from my perspective what I need to be doing as a CEO which is build a great company that makes the world better.Rosoff: You grew up in San Francisco, and you mentioned that a lot of the critics don't mention Salesforce when they talk about what's wrong with the city. But they do talk a lot about the tech industry coming in and raising housing prices, ignoring the local community, and so on. What would you like to see the tech community do to overcome that?Benioff: Well I'd like to see them adopt the 1-1-1 model. We have now almost 1,000 companies who have joined that pledge 1%.I think it's very important that every CEO gets out there and adopts a public school. We don't have that many public schools in the United States, and every CEO and every company needs to adopt a public school. In San Francisco, we have a formalized program called Circle the Schools, where we are trying to get every CEO to adopt a school. One reason we're seeing higher attendance rates and better educational outcomes in the San Francisco public schools is that over the last 5 years we really have had a more focused public approach in the schools.Just this week, I had meetings with Oakland principals and San Francisco principals, and that is a very important but also very fulfilling part of my job that I can see it's actually working. Rosoff: How do you split your time? What percentage of your time do you spend on the foundation versus the business.Benioff: The vast majority of my time is spent on operating my business. I am running a company that has 22,000 people and will do $8.3 billion in revenue this year. That's growing at a high rate. That becomes all-consuming, but as part of running my business these things are also important. Rosoff: Last year, you noticed that women were making less than men at Salesforce. How did that go down? Who pointed it out to you?Benioff: Gender equality remains a major issue, not just in the technology industry but in a lot of industries - you just have to watch <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/patricia-arquette-wage-equality-meryl-streep-reaction-2015-2">Patty Arquette's Academy Award speech</a>. Two women, one our head of HR and one who ran our women's group said, "Hey, we're paying women less than men at Salesforce." I didn't believe it at the time, when we actually looked at the information we were actually paying women $3 million less than we were paying men for the same amount of work, and so we made an adjustment to how we pay women.Rosoff: How do other companies address this kind of inequality? Benioff: On that one it's very easy. Every company has an HR system, every company knows their salaries, that's obviously how they pay people, and all a CEO has to do is push a button and look at, "Do I pay women the same as men?" Most CEOs are afraid to push that button.Rosoff: Do you have any practices that help you stay centered, stay grounded, stay on top of things?Benioff: There's two things. I have a mindfulness practice and I try to practice mindfulness formally a few times a week. Like yesterday I did attend a mindfulness seminar that we had at Salesforce with 500 employees, where we had a mindfulness teacher come in.Rosoff: Mindfulness, what is that, like meditation?Benioff: It's a meditation type practice, just being able to sit quietly and spend time trying to let go of the stress that I collect during the week running a big business. Number two, on a regular basis I do the same thing with my business: I ask myself five questions.What do I want?What's important to me? Including, like we talked about, corporate values in terms of trust and growth and innovation and equality, that's what we want. Also my own personal values of what I'm trying to do with myself.Then how I'm going to get those things, that's the third question. The fourth question is understanding the obstacles.The fifth is the measurements. And trying to have some kind of awareness around those five dimensions.Rosoff: A lot of people are feeling overwhelmed by technology these days. People feel like they always need to have their phones on them, always need to be posting, always sharing. How do you overcome that stress?Benioff: I posted something about that <a href="https://twitter.com/Benioff/status/738761661482291200">on my feed</a> on Twitter today, which is a study from the Journal of the American Medical Association that basically said we're all spending too much time on our phones and e need to delete a few apps. I deleted my Facebook account completely. I found it was just overwhelming me - exactly the world you used. I'm only on Twitter, I'm on SalesforceOne, which is my internal one for work, I'm on email, and that's it. And I'm limited to that. I'm trying not to take on more stuff. I was with a friend this weekend, he's got his Twitter, his Facebook, he has his Snapchat, he's got all these - too much. Rosoff: Do you have a designated downtime, like you're putting your phone away for an hour?
