<ul><li>Facebook has launched new music features for ‘Stories’ for its own platform as well as Instagram. </li><li>‘Lip Sync Live’ will allow users to dance along with songs and ‘Lyrics for Instagram’ will let users sing along to music tracks. </li><li>It will be taking on popular apps in the Indian market like TikTok and Smule. </li></ul>TikTok, the Chinese short video making app, will now have to contend against Facebook. The Mark Zuckerberg owned social networking platform is now allowing users to add music to their posts and ‘Stories’. Facebook’s popularity may be waning midst security concerns and privacy issues, but Instagram — also owned by Facebook — is still the most widely used image sharing social network. Both, Facebook and Instagram, will allow users to share ‘stories’ — posts that only last 24 hours — with music. They can also customise how they want to add music to their stories in two different ways. Users can either lip sync to their favorite songs using ‘Lip Sync Live’ or show off their voice through ‘<keyword id="8112874" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="lyrics-on-instagram">Lyrics on Instagram</keyword>’. Facebook vs Tiktok and Smule TikTok’s main draw for users being able to add music to short 15 second videos, something that was not an option on Facebook and Instagram so far. Users who don’t want to sing but create musical content, could do so on TikTok. Even Smule, the karaoke app that allows you to sing along to songs, is going to have to more competition with ‘Lyrics on Instagram’. Smule has 40 million monthly active users globally. TikTok, on the other hand, has 120 million monthly active users — three times Smule’s users — only within India. Even so, Facebook’s massive reach extends to 270 million users in the country. It’s only Instagram that has to beat our TikTok coming in at 72 million active users. Facebook has cemented partnerships with Indian music labels like T-Series Music, Zee Music Company, and Yash Raj Films. This allows it to feature songs on its platform without violating any licensing issues.

We saw people singing from their homes to cheer for health workers, saw individuals serenade neighbors from their balconies. But we also saw music play an important role in the digital world, bringing people together, despite they being in different parts of the world. As a part of a panel discussion held during Business Insider’s Global Trends Festival, we brought together experts from the world of music to discuss how music became the real social connector during these tough times and how technology helped enable this. The session which was moderated by Devraj Sanyal, MD &amp; CEO Universal Music India and South Asia had panelists including Tarsame Mittal - Founder, TM Talent Management, Sonal Dabral - Creative Consultant and Ex-CCO, South East Asia at Ogilvy, Viral Jani - Senior Vice-President, Investment Operations, Times Bridge and Carlton Braganza - Entertainer &amp; Founder, Opus. Music and brands Over the years, we have seen music play an important role in advertising. With famous jingles like Hamara Bajaj or Piyo Glassful Doodh, brands have been able to create a huge impact in consumer’s minds and helped in the process of brand-building. On how a few memorable brands were built on the back of strong jingles with music at the core of its communication Dabral shared the story of McDowell’s Soda’s famous friendship anthem, Ye No 1 yaari hai. “Friendship had been at the core of the brand’s communication and we were thinking of how to develop on the idea. During my research, I was reading up on friendship and I came across a few farewell videos of people where I saw many of them use the song ‘Yaaron Dosti’ in the background which is a popular song by singer KK. It was then that the idea of creating a friendship anthem for the brand struck me,” shared Dabral. Dabral then wrote the lyrics of the song which was composed by music composer Rajiv Bhalla and the brand gained tremendously due to this song. From just a brand campaign, the song also became the foundation for No.1 Yaari Jam Pad which was a platform for music enthusiastic to collaborate with like-minded people to create new music and showcase their stories to the world. The need for artists to be social While music has always been social where people have gotten together for gigs and concerts to enjoy music together, with the advent of social media, artists have gotten various new platforms to showcase their talent. Discussing the need for artists to be active on social, Sanyal asked Mittal about the importance that social media plays in the lives of today’s artists. To which Mittal said, “It plays a very important role. Music is the creator of consumer economy today and creators are creating music for consumers and all of us, be it managers, labels etc, are a part of the mix. Social media is a platform that helps these people tell their stories. There are many artists who might not be always active on social media but they are still active on a few platforms. In my opinion, even an interview is a social communication and when artists communicate, we get to see a part of their personal narratives. As an audience, we are able to see a new perspective of culture through music.” The importance of making music social Speaking about how challenging the last few months were for the entire world, Sanyal said, “It was a time when people were desperate for connections, and that’s what we got, due to the intervention of technology.” He cited the example of Jukebox Jammies, an online show created by Braganza that has now seen over a 100 episodes. Elaborating on how the show started, Braganza said, “I started the show at the beginning of the lockdown and I started it as a joke saying Modiji was not allowing me to go outside my house. It started out as a half-hour show where people would request songs. Initially there were 20 people but the number kept going up with each passing day. I thought I would do it till I could get out of my bedroom, but slowly it started feeling like it was making a difference to certain people. I had friends coming in, specialists who helped me with the tech side of things. The numbers kept growing. It slowly became a virtual community coming together and waiting for me to be there. From it being a show where people were asking for me to sing, it became more of a community where the music was incidental. I saw a whole community coming together and I started touching upon other person things too, stories about where I grew up. I got messages from people saying this was taking them to an uncomplicated, happy space when things were nice. It brought with it friends, music and connections. People came together and it became a cool hangout which had music at its centre.” How technology became an enable for music to go beyond boundaries Sanyal also touched upon the role social singing platforms like <keyword id="191951" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Smule">Smule</keyword> was playing in building communities online and giving people a platform to showcase their talent, and how technology was again making it possible. Looking back on the evolution on social media over the years and how platforms like Smule are now using the power of social media to bring people together and become a part of a community while also building a following for themselves, Jani said, “The first phase in the journey of social media was when platforms like Facebook were created. People were using these platforms to connect with each other in small circles. The second phase moved to public expression, when we saw platforms like Instagram and Twitter come in which made one-to-many communications possible. The third wave however made it easy for the creation of content and Smule is a part of this third generation of social network. Our platform is making it easy for not just singers but even regular people to sound good. It allows you to create content and take it out to other social platforms. It has helped build communities and we have seen that magic happen over the past few years.There is a rallying around that happens. Even regular people who don’t really have a singing background can have thousands of followers on the platform where they make friends with music and they also create music with friends.” The platform also witnessed massive growth during the lockdown months owing to the fact that people were stuck at home and were looking for interesting things to do, to keep themselves engaged and entertained. “We saw people come to our platform during the lockdown months and use it as a way of alleviating their stress. We saw close to 200% increase in downloads and over 130% increase in the monthly active users during the lockdown,” he shared. The lockdown also led to people embracing technology much faster than they otherwise would have. It also saw many businesses innovate, to come up with content created from the comforts of their homes. Sharing a few such examples, Mittal said, “Technology is really important for everything we do along with the creativity and the content we create. During the lockdown, we discovered so many tech platforms which helped us come up with online content. We organized the Rise India Awards with Red FM on multiple platforms. We also shot a video with 2 of our artists, where everyone in the team was in their respective homes. But with technological intervention, we were able to shoot the entire thing from people’s respective homes. We also organized ‘Mimicry Ke Superstars’ with Paytm which was a digital reality contest. We did All About Music completely digitally this year by integrating different technologies onto one platform. So, right now technology is the most important part of our work that is bringing everything together. In fact, I am pretty sure that even once the pandemic and lockdown is over, technology will continue being an important part of our lives and everything we do.”

Smule’s ‘India Jam Karega’ calls for unity over shared passion for music

The network <a href="https://www.adweek.com/tv-video/after-resuscitating-vh1-chris-mccarthy-is-ready-to-breath-new-life-into-mtv/">renewed its focus</a> on unscripted series - as well as the brands that hooked viewers back in the 2000s - to bring teens and women back into the fold.CMO Jacqueline Parkes oversees marketing at MTV, VH1, CMT, and Logo, and serves as EVP of Viacom's Digital Studios. Parkes is charged with getting MTV shows in front of the right audiences, including fans who may have forgotten about the network, and those who never tuned in to begin with.Parkes spoke to Business Insider about selling nostalgia with revivals like "The Hills: New Beginnings" and the "Jersey Shore" spinoffs, as well as courting the next MTV generation. "We had a strategic blueprint that was really built around, how do we create surround sound over a long period of time, so that when we do launch the show on linear, we're successful."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div><h2>Selling nostalgia</h2>When MTV premiered "The Hills: New Beginnings" in June, for example, Parkes and her marketing team started planting seeds about the franchise's return in audiences minds about 10 months out, when members of the original cast reunited at the <a href="https://www.eonline.com/news/961680/the-hills-cast-reunites-at-the-2018-mtv-video-music-awards">MTV Video Music Awards to announce the revival</a>.Parkes had identified three key audiences for the revival of "The Hills," a reality-TV series about a group of affluent young adults living in California, which originally aired from 2006 to 2010. She targeted fans of "The Hills" who still watched MTV, fans who were no longer watching the network, and people who may have been too young or old to see the original series but enjoy similar programming."We call them social Sophies," Parkes said of this last group. "They like to be a part of the social conversation. They like fashion, dating, reality TV ... We sized up each one of those targets, and then we strategically identified how we could connect with them."The announcement at the MTV Video Music Awards spoke to fans who were still watching MTV. The network cultivated them further by airing marathons of the show leading up to the June 24 premiere, and launching a pop-up channel on Viacom's free, streaming-TV service Pluto TV, which played episodes of "The Hills" and its predecessor series "Laguna Beach" around the clock.&#xa0;Parkes pursued through social media and other platforms fans of "The Hills" who had ceased watching MTV. The show's stars promoted the series on their social accounts. In one example, MTV partnered with Amazon's Alexa voice assistant to have "The Hills" star Audrina Patridge answer questions from users about what they should wear in the morning.<h2>Reaching the 'social Sophies'</h2>On social media, MTV highlighted quintessential moments from the original series, and looked for emotional pulls that might resonate with people, even if they hadn't seen the show.&#xa0;"We tapped into emotional truisms that enabled us to connect with people on a much deeper level," Parkes said.For those "social Sophies," who weren't familiar with "The Hills," Parkes had to get more creative. Her team worked with the social music app, Smule, and artist Natasha Bedingfield to perform the show's theme song, "Unwritten," on the platform, where people could sing along.During the week ahead of the premiere, a group of young men who were almost certainly too young to have watched "The Hills" when it first aired, got in on the challenge. Their video went viral on Twitter with more than 26,000 likes and 90,000 retweets.&#xa0;&#xa0;When "The Hills: New Beginnings" premiered on June 24, it became 2019's <a href="https://www.thewrap.com/the-hills-revival-marks-second-highest-rated-cable-premiere-of-2019-among-young-adults/">second highest live-and-same-day cable TV debut</a> among MTV's core 18- to 34-year-old demographic. It followed another MTV revival, a dating spinoff of "Jersey Shore," called "Double Shot at Love with DJ Pauly D and Vinny."The first metric Parkes looks at for any show on TV is the percentage of the audience that watched who had never seen the show before. A healthy benchmark is 10% to 12%, she said. For the premiere of "The Hills," it was 24% - close to the 25% the "Jersey Shore: Family Vacation" spinoff had.&#xa0;Ratings of "The Hills: New Beginnings" have slipped since launch, but the show still routinely ranks among the <a href="https://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/daily-ratings/monday-cable-ratings-july-22-2019/">top 25 most watched cable shows</a> among 18- to 49-year-olds on Monday nights.Parkes is now applying "The Hills" formula to the upcoming reboot of "Making the Band," which originally aired on MTV from 2002 to 2004. Star Sean "Diddy" Combs kicked off promotions by <a href="https://www.instagram.com/tv/Bz8f24-nHv4/?utm_source=ig_embed">announcing the return on his Instagram account</a> on July 15. And MTV is holding <a href="https://www.smule.com/listen/%23mtbcasting-highlights!/481">casting auditions</a> for the series on Smule.<h2>Digging into the data</h2>Parkes, who joined MTV in the spring of 2016, shortly before McCarthy took over as president of the network in the fall, said that a lot of the audience targeting the marketing team is doing stems from the data-oriented mindset McCarthy introduced."He gets the art and science like no one I've ever seen in entertainment," Parkes said, crediting McCarthy's Wharton business school background for that talent. "We do a lot of data and analytics on every element of what we do."Parkes works closely with Viacom's research arm, run by Colleen Fahey Rush, to identify the target audiences for each show and where best to reach them. "We do micro-market media buying," Parkes said.&#xa0;The marketing team may notice, for instance, that "Jersey Shore" is popular with viewers in New Haven, Connecticut, and then work with the research team to pinpoint 10 look-alike markets around the country to buy media for the show in. Those markets could be elsewhere in New England, or in places like New Jersey, Arizona, or Southern California that are less obvious.<h2>The rest is still unwritten</h2>In 2018, a year after McCarthy laid out his plan to get the network back on track, MTV was one of the fastest growing networks among 18- to 49-year-olds with a 17% viewership lift year over year, according to <a href="https://www.indiewire.com/2018/12/network-ratings-top-channels-espn-cnn-fox-news-cbs-nbc-abc-1202030597/">Nielsen data published by IndieWire</a>.The network has also grown prime-time ratings year over year <a href="https://ir.viacom.com/static-files/6679cee3-c8ee-42e9-8674-0a6cc421efbc">for the past eight quarters</a>, thanks to shows like "Jersey Shore: Family Vacation," which is also <a href="https://www.adweek.com/tv-video/after-resuscitating-vh1-chris-mccarthy-is-ready-to-breath-new-life-into-mtv/">ruling Thursday nights</a> (dubbed "Jerzdays" by MTV) in cable ratings in its current season.MTV has landed a few new reality-TV hits under the leadership of McCarthy and programming president Nina Diaz, too, including "Floribama Shore," "Ex on the Beach," and "Siesta Key."A potential acquisition of Viacom by sister company CBS, which could be announced as soon as Aug. 8, could offer MTV even more scale and the opportunity to bring its brands to new platforms, like CBS's subscription services, <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/how-a-merged-cbs-viacom-could-try-compete-hollywood-giants-1225453">the Hollywood Reporter reported</a>."We're launching 55 shows this year," Parkes said. "If I add digital, that's hundreds more ... so we all have our heads down."The early boost on the cable-TV side is encouraging, but it's MTV's platform-agnostic approach to extending its nostalgic brands -and creating fresh ones - for audiences on digital platforms like YouTube, Instagram, or Facebook that are most promising to Wall Street."They're not just trying to play the same game of driving ratings on the cable networks," said Tim Nolan, analyst at Macquarie Capital, which upgraded Viacom to a neutral rating in February because of the network turnaround effort that's most apparent at MTV. "If they can turn this around it's because they know their users, they have mobile, digital-first content, and they can monetize it more effectively through targeted advertising."<div></div><div></div>

That's if Lindsay Lohan has it her way.
In 2005, Andronikov quit his job on Wall Street. He moved to San Francisco and crashed on a friend's couch with little more than a startup idea. 
Andronikov had worked in the telecommunications investment group at JPMorgan. He noticed voice search services, like 411, were a largely untapped market. In 2005, 6.5 billion calls were made to 411. The average call cost $1.50, making it a $10 billion+ business. Andronikov created inFreeDA, an advertising-sponsored directory that served relevant search results when people called for assistance. 
AT&amp;T acquired inFreeDA in October 2006 and Andronikov began his next venture, MoVoxx. MoVoxx was a mobile advertising company backed by Khosla Ventures, First Round Capital, Greycroft and others. That company was also acquired, first by Adenyo and later Motricity for $100 million.
Since then, Andronikov has moved back to New York. While angel investing, a new opportunity caught his eye.
In China, YY Group recently went public and it has a popular song sharing application. Three of the most watched shows on TV are singing competitions (The Voice, American Idol and X Factor). Andronikov wondered why a popular song sharing app hadn't taken off in the United States, despite obvious demand.
In early April, Andronikov and his co-founder Sergey Fedorov released an app called <keyword id="1746388" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Just-Sing-It">Just Sing It</keyword>. The game resembles Draw Something, OMGPOP's popular Pictionary-like app which was acquired by Zynga for $180 million. It's also similar to Instagram in that users can add filters to voice recordings. They can make their voice sound high or low, or even squeaky like a hamster.
On Just Sing It, users can record songs or rap for friends and strangers. The singer can pick a music genre (R&amp;B, Hip Hop, Dance, Country or Pop) and the lyrics show up, like a karaoke screen. The recipient then guesses which song is being sung. Andronikov thinks it will be a good way for friends to send funny-sounding messages to each other, for people to watch amusing displays of talent, and for serious singers to get found. Recordings can also be shared on social networks.
Since April 4, about 70,000 people have downloaded Just Sing It and 400,000 recordings have been made. The app owes much of its quick growth to actress Lindsay Lohan who came across the app and tweeted its praises:

Andronikov says his team didn't pay for the endorsement, but now that they know she's likes the app, they're working with her team to "make the most of her being a fan." Lohan has now tweeted seven times about Just Sing It, asking her <a href="https://twitter.com/lindsaylohan">6 million followers to join in.</a> The marketing move is working; on April 5 <a href="https://twitter.com/JustSingIt/status/320080679801090049">Just Sing It enjoyed Apple's No. 1</a> Free App position.
Having downloaded the app, and I'm not as infatuated with it as Lohan is. It's not easy to record anything other than suggested songs, and I'm not a big fan of singing in public.
The idea of filtering your voice is interesting, but other apps like Smule's I Am T Pain also let you record and alter your voice. If Just Sing It was more of a Snapchat experience, where you could say something in a funny voice and know it'd be permanently deleted, that'd be more appealing for self-conscious people like me. 
But for those who use are comfortable putting themselves out there, like Lohan, it seems addicting. Andronikov says his team is close to announcing a seed round in the next week or two.
