India's refurbished smartphone market witnesses accelerated growth

"Our estimates show that general trade in India sells over $12 billion worth of mobile phones a year. Apple's former India head has launched a social network that doubles up as an online marketplace for mobile retailers

<keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> took the top spot in the global smartphone market in August driven by sales growth in India as the market recovered from a nationwide lockdown, a Counterpoint Research report said on Friday. The South Korean tech giant also recaptured the top spot in India in July-August period, according to Counterpoint's latest Monthly Market Pulse report. Samsung has now reached its highest market share in India since 2018 by adopting an aggressive online channel strategy to benefit from opportunities arising due to anti-China sentiments in the country, said the report. "Geopolitical policies and political affairs among nations are affecting the smartphone market in many ways. There will be heightened marketing activity to seize opportunities in these regions and segments," Research Analyst Minsoo Kang said in a statement. "As a result, the concentration of top players in the smartphone market will be much stronger. We see players like Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi and OPPO benefiting the most." However, even as Samsung snatched the top spot in the India market dominated by Xiaomi for long, the Chinese smartphone maker is showing a significant increase in its market share globally, especially in markets where Huawei used to have strong presence, such as Central Eastern Europe. In the global smartphone market, Samsung captured 22 per cent share. In April, Samsung lost the top spot to Huawei due to sharp declines in its major markets of India and Europe. After achieving its highest global share of 21 per cent in April, Huawei became No. 2 in the market with 16 per cent share in August. Huawei's market share is expected to fall further in the future due to US trade sanctions, said the report. Apple has managed to maintain its share well in the off-season period. With the October 13 launch of the new iPhone 12 series, Apple's sales are expected to rise but only in November as the launch is later than previous years. The long lifecycle of iPhone 11 series and successful new iPhone SE will help Apple bridge the gap till then, Counterpoint said. Samsung becomes top smartphone seller in India amid anti-China sentiments

In a bid to achieve greater price parity in online and offline trading of smartphones, rivals Samsung and Apple have come out with first-of-its-kind concrete steps, which will also stress on the importance of online retailing for both of them. 
 In the new move, Samsung has tied up with Amazon and <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> to set up a ‘brand store’ on their websites. Under this, only authorised sellers would be able to offer the product at prices fixed by the Korean company. This will prevent any lucrative discounts. 
 
As per the senior executives with the cellphone trade, now unauthorised sellers won't be able to offer Samsung products on these websites. 
 Snapdeal refused to comment on the association with Samsung. An <keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> spokesperson told Economic Times the Samsung store is a brand experience page and merchandising initiative whereby it showcases the breadth of Samsung's selection. "Through such initiatives, we partner with brands to engage with their and our customers," the spokesperson said. 
 
Meanwhile, Apple has now decided to allow retailers to buy its products from any of its four distributors-Ingram Micro, Redington, Rashi Peripherals and Brightstar-which earlier was not the case. 
 The move came after offline retailers complained that online sellers were getting phones from Apple's designated distributors at lower prices. Now, <keyword id="481409" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Apple-India">Apple India</keyword> has informed its offline retailers that they are free to negotiate margins with distributors and can sell the products at a lower price, matching online if they want. 
 
"Even though all such communication by Apple India officials to retailers is done verbally, the big chains are already buying from distributors who offer best price," one of the executives told Economic Times. 
 
As per market tracker Counterpoint Research senior analyst Tarun Pathak, these were the first steps initiated by Apple and Samsung to tap eCommerce market in the country by working on traditional distribution lines. 
 
"Both the brands were losing sales to online-only smartphone brands at a time when e-Commerce already contributes 15% of smartphone sales in India and expected to double this year," Pathak told the financial daily. 
 
As per ET, some 115 million smartphones are expected to be sold in India in 2015. 
 
As per Chief Executive Officer of a leading mobilephone retal chain, Apple has adopted a push-back mechanism to sway offline retailers which complained about pricing disparity with ecommerce, adding that through this Apple signalled that the company was serious about not curbing online sales in any way. 
 
"Apple is not that fussy about online discounting in India as it used to be," he said. 
 
Coming to Samsung's initiative, another senior executive with an electronics chain said after blacklisting online sellers that were not maintaining pricing of the products, Samsung’s latest move will allow it to tap online shoppers without disturbing offline retailers and also give a legitimate stamp to handsets sold through Amazon and Snapdeal. 
 
Industry officials informed ET that the Korean company was also in talks with Flipkart to set up a similar online brand store and may include other eCommerce firms too. 
 A <keyword id="107877" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Samsung-India">Samsung India</keyword> spokesperson said all channel partners contribute to its market share growth and the company regularly monitors developments in both the online and offline retail spaces.

Launchpad sellers, startups from Amazon Launchpad, had 75 products in store during the sale. Their sales over 65% on a year-on-year comparison. “This year, we have 1,000 product launches, out of which more than 500 are from small and medium sized businesses. And in the endeavour, the Indian ecommerce giant is promoting on its homepage products that are in an exclusive deal with their rival competitor Amazon. One such instance in OnePlus 3, which will be priced Rs 10,000 lesser. 
 
However, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei on Friday questioned Flipkart on Twitter asking for explanations on the same. In a tweet on Friday, Carl Pei wrote to Flipkart cofounder Sachin Bansal ,"brother, what's this? We're exclusive with @amazonIN" (sic). He added: "For premium brands, trust is everything. We would never betray trust by dropping prices like this." 
 
Flipkart has reated a product page for OnePlus 3, saying the device is coming soon on the website. 
In a statement, Flipkart defended itself, suggesting that as a marketplace, it had multiple third-party sellers who were free to sell anything at any price."Flipkart is a marketplace which helps sellers connect with customers across the country. All our sellers are mandated to adhere to stringent guidelines. The prices and discounts for all our sales are decided by the participating sellers and brands," the company said. 
 
Amazon India also reiterated it had an exclusive partnership with OnePlus which would extend through 2017 as well. "Amazon.in has an exclusive partnership with OnePlus brand since December 2014. Amazon has successfully brought the flagship OnePlus smartphone devices to Indian customers, right from OnePlus 1, OnePlus 2, OnePlus X, OnePlus 3 and now the latest flagship, OnePlus 3T," a spokesperson said. 
 
In a separate statement, OnePlus told The Economic Times, "OnePlus is focused on creating premium flagship smartphones.We have an exclusive partnership with Amazon in India. We advise customers to purchase OnePlus products only through official channels as we can't guarantee authenticity of the products sold elsewhere.

Realme sold 5.2 million phones during the festive season, thanks to massive discounts

Chinese companies are treating India as a "dumping ground" for 4G phones that may not have Band 3 or the 1800 MHz band, said Vikas Jain, cofounder of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Micromax">Micromax</a>, India's No. 2 phone seller. 
 
This is one of two bands on which India has allowed 4G LTE services, the other being 2300 Mhz. 
 
Pardeep Jain, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Karbonn+">Karbonn</a> Mobiles MD, is of the view that Chinese vendors have been dumping excess 4G inventory and playing the price game to gain market share. "They are worried that all manufacturing facilities are coming to India, so what they will do now? These companies have wrongly projected the market demand in China and are now dumping that extra inventory in India at lower cost," he said. 
 <keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> has commercially launched 4G services while Reliance Jio, <keyword id="6354924" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Idea-Cellular">Idea Cellular</keyword> and <keyword id="6354923" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Vodafone-India">Vodafone India</keyword> will do so either later this year or in 2016. 
 Arvind Vohra, country CEO and managing director of <keyword id="2083774" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Gionee-India">Gionee India</keyword>, has different story to tell. He said the company's phones are priced higher than those sold by local rivals and of excellent quality. "Our pricing of devices is much higher than Indian players. Besides, our devices are world-class. There's no question of us dumping substandard products in India." 
 The question arises, why Chinese phone makers are ahead of local sellers? It is because they have made early inroads. Chinese handset makers <keyword id="13722" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Lenovo">Lenovo</keyword>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Xiaomi%2C+Huawei+and+Gionee+">Xiaomi, Huawei and Gionee</a> accounted for 12% of total India smartphone market in Q2, up two-fold from a year ago, as per IDC. 
 
As for 4G phones, Chinese players have have 45% of the market while Indian makers have less than 10%. Samsung, which sells the most mobile phones in India, leads in 4G as well. The segment surged 150% in the June quarter from the preceding one. 
 
The other reason is Chinese companies have also been able to leverage the online model in India. "Key to the success of the Chinese vendors has been popular flash sales through online players such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Flipkart%2C+Snapdeal+and+Amazon">Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon</a>," said Kiran Kumar, senior analyst at IDC India. 
 
"At the same time, they also focused on bringing more 4G phones at affordable $100-150 (Rs 6,700-10,000) price points, which are left unattended by Indian and global vendors."

"Within the first 10 months of becoming independent, we are the third-largest online smartphone player in the market and even sold over 1 million units within the first week of the Big Billion Day sale on Flipkart. 2020 has been an exciting year for us at Poco India and we are looking forward to creating newer milestones in 2021," Anuj Sharma, Country Director, Poco India said in a statement. As part of the celebration and extending its gratitude, Poco India is discounting its best-sellers for a limited time. Consumers will be able to purchase Poco C3 3+32GB variant at ₹6,999 and 4+64GB variant at ₹7,999. Poco X3, the gaming powerhouse, will be up for grabs starting at ₹15,999, with a flat ₹1,000 discount on all 3 variants. "Poco after becoming an independent brand in the beginning of this year is gaining momentum in the Indian smartphone market. Its smartphones like Poco C3 and Poco M2 were the main drivers of this growth. Features like a large display, 5000 mAh battery and gaming processor at affordable price points made both models lucrative for consumers," Shilpi Jain, Research Analyst, Counterpoint added.
