Though "smartphone pinky" isn't a <keyword id="12040452" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="medical" source="Orion">medical</keyword>ly recognized condition and isn't anything to be alarmed about, people who use their phones frequently might be at risk of other phone-related medical conditions, doctors say.</p><p>"The dents are caused by the bottom of the cell <keyword id="10861" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="phone" source="Orion">phone</keyword> resting on the little finger, which many people use as a support to hold the phone from sliding out of their <keyword id="12479866" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hand" source="Orion">hand</keyword>," Dr. Leon Benson, a hand surgeon at the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute and a professor at the University of Chicago, told Insider. "The cell phone itself isn't heavy enough to stop blood flow or damage any nerves or tendons in the little finger."</p><div type="image" title="pinkies" height="1773" width="2364" msid="87554956" hostid="261"></div><p>"Skin and the subcutaneous fat beneath our skin has some fluid content and is compressible - and similar to a gel pad or styrofoam, pressure in one spot will leave a temporary impression," Benson said. </p><p>He also noted that the mark isn't permanent and that there are no cell phones heavy enough to cause lasting, painful damage to your hand. It's similar to a mark left on the wrist after wearing a watch or on the bridge of the nose for people who wear glasses.</p><p>"I would suggest, however, that if someone notices that they have an obvious depression in their little finger, it probably is a good sign that they are holding their phone constantly and for a long time," Benson said. "This is probably dangerous because it means that they are so engaged in their internet world that they are likely distracted from real life."</p><p>Ruba Katrajian, an osteopathic physician, told <a href="https://www.buzzfeed.com/jenniferadams2/smartphone-pinky-injuries?origin=web-hf">Buzzfeed something similar, saying the dent people are seeing in their pinkies is caused by the pinky supporting the weight of their phones</a>, but that the phenomenon isn't causing any damage to your hands. </p><p>Other online have wondered if there is any impact to the joints between your ring and pinky finger. However, Dave Parsons, a fellow at Curtin University's School of Occupational Therapy and Social Work, told <a href="https://www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/is-smartphone-pinky-real-probably-not-but-phones-can-still-cause-damage-20160122-gmbute.html">The Sydney Morning Herald that it's unlikely that people are permanently bending their fingers from phone use</a>, adding that it would take six hours of pressure a day to impact joints.</p><p>"If someone was on their phone for more than six hours, it is plausible, but it is still pretty unlikely," he told the Herald. "It can be cumulative over the day, but obviously longer sustained periods would increase the susceptibility."</p><p>Most importantly, there are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/texting-thumb-pain-what-it-is-and-how-to-treat-it-2017-4">other conditions stemming from excessive phone use that people should be more worried about</a>. One is "texting thumb," which is soreness from repetitive <keyword id="12479865" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="phone-use" source="Orion">phone use</keyword>. Trigger finger - where a finger gets stuck in one place - and sore wrists are other common conditions associated with smartphone use that can be addressed by doctors, according to Buzzfeed.</p><p>Switching hands and using a Pop Socket can help head off phone-related aches and pains. But the real solution, according to Benson, is to just spend less time on your phone. </p><p>"Holding a cell phone for hours is only dangerous because it means that the person probably has no life. Judgement call," Benson said. "Regardless, the little finger will be OK."</p>

<ul><li>While the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">Coronavirus</keyword> outbreak has led to productions of films and daily soaps being stopped across the country, TV viewership is going up due to people staying at home.</li><li>However, the GECs re now faced with the challenge of coming up with fresh content for its viewers.</li><li>In such a scenario, how are these channels planning to tackle the situation?</li></ul>It’s been close to 2 weeks since India’s film and television bodies decided to suspend shootings from to avoid the spread of the novel Coronavirus. The Indian Film &amp; Television Directors' Association (IFTDA), Producers Guild of India and Federation of Western Indian Cine Employees (FWICE) had decided on March 17 to put production and shooting on hold till March 31.<br /><br /> As the PM announced his 21-day complete lockdown, production will not start before April 14. The biggest impact of this will be on GEC channels that usually work with a content bank of about two weeks. However, with the lockdown, these channels will soon run out of fresh content to air.<br /><br /> Considering most people are stuck at home, OTT and TV viewership saw a spike, according to Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India data. The total TV consumption saw a spike of 8% across India in the week ended March 20 (<keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">Covid-19</keyword> Week 1), while the total time spent per user on smartphones went increased by 6.2% to 25 hours a week. Moreover, the consumption growth in the Hindi speaking markets (HSM) was at around 10% in comparison to the South region that grew by 5%. The HSM region saw an increase in terms of both reach and time spent.<br /><br /> While this opens up possibilities for advertisers to catch more eyeballs, GECs are now faced with the problem of running out of content. In such a scenario, what is the strategy they are employing to ensure that they do not lose their audience who can only stay engaged if they are offered something new to watch?<br /><br /> <b>Ensuring all-round entertainment for consumers </b><br /><br /> While production has come to a complete halt, all the channels believe that the show mustn’t stop and are strategizing at how to make the best use of the content at their disposal currently. <br /><br /> Speaking about how it is working around the current situation, <keyword id="3387826" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prathyusha-Agarwal">Prathyusha Agarwal</keyword>, Chief Consumer Officer, <keyword id="174248" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zee-Entertainment-Enterprises-Ltd">Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd</keyword> said, “Taking into consideration the explosion in TV consumption and the changing composition of audiences, there is a need to customize programming for this emerging trend. Ramayana, too has a very strong connect with viewers across India beyond the Hindi speaking markets. Mythological and historical shows along with some well-produced thrillers and family dramas make it an interesting package for viewers. We are in tune with this, considering Dangal TV too has been airing Ramayana as well as similar mythological shows like Devi Adi Parashakti, Mahima Shani Dev Ki for a while now. We are aware that such content always has an audience and therefore we will continue to keep our viewers engaged with such shows.”<br /><br /> <b>Covid-19’s business impact </b><br /><br /> While many sectors like events and out-of-home have been badly hit due to the lockdown, broadcasters are hopeful that they will be impacted less. Considering viewership is on the rise too, it presents an opportunity for both broadcasters and advertisers to make something out of an adverse situation.<br /><br /> Dangal TV has seen a spike in its viewership, like most other GECs and is not focusing on new ideas. “Despite the COVID-19 challenge, Dangal TV is experiencing a spike in the average time spent.We are witnessing the early signs of a consumption uptick with an increase in the viewership. At Enterr10 Television Network, we are strongly connected and engaged with our viewers. Our numbers have been ahead of us. We are readily willing at focusing on exploring new ideas, IPs, etc. We haven’t stepped back in terms of exploring what more is possible, even during this period. Even in this unprecedented situation, we will continue to invest in good library, innovative programming and in distribution that will further aid in consolidating our position in both rural and urban markets. While there is huge competition amongst TV channels, our first priority is to consolidate, maintain and further strengthen our leadership position on television.”<br /><br /> Pointing towards the fact that a lot of advertising on TV comes from FMCG that have been relatively less impacted, Sharma shared her optimism about the future. <br /><br /> “The lockdown has hit the manufacturing, supply chain and consumption of all brands and that will invariably have an effect on ad spends. However, TV and digital will have a marginal impact as compared to other mediums like print, outdoors and radio as TV viewership is expected to see an upswing due to the forced lockdown. Secondly, a large amount of advertising revenue for a GEC comes from FMCG brands that are relatively less impacted in the current situation. Also, since it is an industry phenomenon, all GEC channels will witness a drop in ad spends,” explained Sharma.<br /><br /> Added Agarwal, “Over the next 3 weeks, we expect content consumption on TV to go up as people look to keep themselves entertained. Given the temporary nature of the lockdown, it would be imprudent to quote any implication as of now, but we are sure that TV has become an essential service providing the much needed companionship to families in the current times.”<br /><br />

What a gorgeous piece of technology.</p><p>That feeling didn't last.</p><p>I'm now nearly a month into using the iPhone X, and I've slowly realized I unreservedly dislike the device. In fact, I hate using it.</p><p>I could rattle off a list of complaints, like how FaceID is inconsistent and annoying, the scratch-prone bright chrome for the metal casing, and the astronomical price tag.</p><h2>There's a fatal flaw. </h2><p>But there's really only one flaw that really matters to me: the phone is impossible for me to use with one hand.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider/Dennis Green</span></p><p class="caption">The top of the red arc marks the natural limit of my thumb's reach.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Though the phone is only a bit bigger than the iPhone 6, 7, and 8, the bezel-less screen makes for an enormous size increase.</p><p>The new gestures required by the notch mean there's no way to look at my notifications with only one hand, or access the control center. Those are pretty essential functions, and it drastically limits the usability of the phone when I'm on the go or when I only have one hand free.</p><p>I've noticed myself actually changing my behavior trying to use the phone, holding it differently and constantly changing my grip by shimmying my hand up the back of the device trying to reach the top of the screen with my thumb.</p><p>I feel like I'm going to drop the device if I continue to hold it vertically, so I instinctively bring the phone down and horizontal, parallel to the floor and near my stomach.</p><p>The entire top two rows of apps on the home screen are inaccessible without sliding my phone up the side of the phone and kind of cradling it between my fingers and thumb. That move makes me paranoid I'm going to drop the $1,000 device.</p><p>I've also noticed a new habit of bringing in my left hand when I'm using the phone nearly all the time. It rests near the top left corner of the device, tapping back arrows or entering the Notification Center </p><p>With my previous iPhone, the 6, I was able to use my pinky as a kind of shelf for the phone to sit on as I tapped away, composing text messages, checking email, or changing the songs played on Spotify. Not so on the X.</p><p>I've enabled reachability, which doesn't help. It's difficult to trigger, and the downward swipe on the bottom edge needed to use it also makes me feel like I'm going to drop the phone.</p><p>Adding an extra step to essential functions like access to Command Center and Notification Center isn't something I want in my life, and I'd prefer to avoid the <a href="https://support.apple.com/iphone/repair/service/pricing">$549 repair bill</a> that comes along with cracking the back glass.</p><h2>I envied people with the old iPhone. </h2><p>At first, I thought it was just an adjustment period - not dissimilar to the feeling of melancholy one gets just after getting married. After all, I experienced something similar with my previous phone.</p><p>The 6 also represented a dramatic departure in form factor from previous iPhones, similar to the X. When I upgraded to it from my iPhone 4S, I was struck with similar doubts about one-handed use, and it took me a while to get used to.</p><p>However, my hand did get used to it in a few weeks, and I ended up falling totally in love with the phone. A month later, that did not happen with the iPhone X.</p><p>I had assumed using the iPhone X would be basically identical to using my previous phone - but I didn't account for how the largest screen size would change how I used it.</p><p>A weird thing happened: I saw people with older iPhone devices and actually envied them. How easy they looked to use, how flawless the TouchID was, the size and shape. It looks perfect. When a friend showed me her new iPhone 8, I felt legitimate pangs of jealousy at its ease of use.</p><h2>Eventually, I realized the phone would never work for me.</h2><p>Finally, I had a realization on a flight to Thanksgiving as I was struggling to use the phone on the airplane. I was filling in a crossword in the New York Times Crossword app, and it was taking a considerably longer amount of time than it usually does. The phone's size made my hand considerably less dexterous.</p><p>I realized, with an air of sadness, that I needed to get rid of it. The screen and size are just too big to use with one hand. It's not comfortable. The company usually takes into account the user experience as it designs products, and I've never had an Apple product that refused to bend to my will so stubbornly. I have similar feelings about FaceID, which I would say works the first time about 50% of the time.</p><p>I realized during this ordeal I don't need to be on the cutting edge of technology - I just need a phone that works for me.</p><h2>A phone shouldn't be this difficult to use. </h2><p>A phone should adapt to a user - not the other way around. I have no doubt that the phone would work perfectly for one with larger hands. </p><p>As I was using the phone, it struck me that there's no real reason for every gesture to be triggered by swipes on the edge of the phone. As the design of iOS for the iPhone X screen size matures, I predict we'll see a lot fewer gestures and design elements based on the edges of the screen, which are by their nature less accessible to fingers.</p><p>If the iPhone X is the future of the smartphone, I'd rather be left behind.
