<p>In Brazil, soccer is a way of life and part of the sport's popularity is that it transcends culture and class.</p>
<p>If there is a ball and a little bit of space, there is a good chance there is a soccer game being played, even in the country's slums.</p>

Gorgeous Photos Of Kids Playing Soccer In Brazil's Slums

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Every year, tens of thousands of people in Japan go missing on purpose to get a second shot at life.</li><li>The South China Morning Post spoke to two men who have disappeared from their old lives.</li></ul><p>A slum in the Japanese port city of Osaka has a mysterious reputation — it's where people go when they don't want to be found. </p><p>The Kamagasaki slum is filled with "jouhatsu-sha," or "evaporated people," who upped and left their lives in other parts of Japan, a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/watch/?extid=CL-UNK-UNK-UNK-IOS_GK0T-GK1C&amp;mibextid=1YhcI9R&amp;v=170517199172082" target="_blank" rel="noopener">South China Morning Post</a> documentary released on March 19 revealed. </p><p>Many of the slum's residents are people who have wandered there and resettled from other places, the SCMP reported. These people have chosen to literally vanish from their lives elsewhere, cutting themselves off from family and friends to start anew. </p><p>In 2021, around 80,000 people were reported missing in Japan, per <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/1035046/japan-missing-person-cases-number/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Statista</a>. Many of them chose to disappear because of debt, to escape their obligations and responsibilities, or just to press the reset button on their lives, per the SCMP. </p><p>One such "evaporated" person is Masashi Tanaka, 49, who said he chose to disappear after being abused by his mother. On the day the documentary was filmed, he had just been released from prison after serving time for drug charges. </p><p>He said that after he went to prison the first time, his mother told him: "You're already dead to me. Don't write to me again." Tanaka chose to go to Kamagasaki after that, where he lives alone.</p><p>Kamagasaki, also known as Airin Chiku, is an area in Osaka where people can get cheap accommodation and low-income jobs as day laborers. Hotels can be found at rates as low as $15 per night, and people stand at the side of the street hoping to get hired for odd jobs, per the SCMP.</p><p>The slum is Japan's largest "yoseba," a place where prospective employers can find day laborers, per <a href="https://www.hurights.or.jp/archives/focus/section3/2019/03/kamagasaki-renewing-an-urban-poor-community.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">human rights group Hurights Osaka</a>. A 2008 investigation by The Guardian estimated that there were around 25,000 people living in the slum. Tokyo, too, is home to a similar slum — <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2019/jun/14/the-tokyo-neighbourhood-where-people-come-to-disappear" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sanya, where many day laborers live and hang around on the streets, waiting for work</a>. </p><p>Many people living in the Kamagasaki slum have changed their names to maintain their anonymity, per the SCMP. </p><p>And it is easy to maintain anonymity and hide in plain sight in Japan, per a report by the BBC in 2020. <a href="https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20200903-the-companies-that-help-people-vanish" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sociologist Hiroki Nakamori told the BBC</a> that because privacy is highly valued in Japan, missing people can withdraw money from ATMs without detection.</p><p>"Police will not intervene unless there's another reason, like a crime or an accident. All the family can do is pay a lot for a private detective. Or just wait. That's all," Nakamori told the BBC.</p><p>A man named Kodama, 64, told the SCMP that he ran away from home at the age of 27 with "very little money," just enough for a train ticket.</p><p>He had been laid off from his job, and traveled to Osaka where he was told that he would be able to find work. Kodama said he has not seen his family in over 35 years.</p><p>"If I went back, it would be awkward for everyone. So I'm going to leave and live on my own," Kodama told the SCMP.</p><p>He added: "I was sick of the world. But I didn't have the courage to die."</p>

Inside a slum that's become the Bermuda Triangle of Japan, where people go to disappear

Mumbai, Apr 20 () Noted industrialist Ratan Tata on Monday lambasted developers and architects for treating slums as "residue" of the city, which, according to him, is one of the reasons for the rapid spread of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic in the megapolis.<p>He also said the city builders should be ashamed of creating vertical slums across the cities. </p><p>"Affordable housing and slum elimination are two surprisingly conflicting issues. We're trying to remove slums from seemingly unsuitable living conditions by relocating them to other locations which are 20-30 miles away on one hand and on the other where there are no jobs for the uprooted people.</p><p>"The high-value housing units that have come up at a place where the slum once stood makes the slums a residue of development," Tata rued at an online discussion organised by Corpgini.</p><p>Tata, who always wanted to be an architect, said builders and architects have built vertical slums which have neither adequate fresh air, hygiene or open space.</p><p>"The big gain for developers comes from the high-value housing that comes up in the areas where the slum stood once and I think what has happened in the COVID issue is that for the first time, the low-value structures that we have built in close proximity are now the very cause of the spread of the virus.</p><p>"The pandemic has underlined the problem that slums create for everyone due to the absence of enough fresh air, enough open space and the issues of being uprooted from your work," the 82-year-old industry veteran said.</p><p>In its endeavour to provide housing for all the government has been encouraging developers to undertake more affordable housing projects across the country along with slum rehabilitation. </p><p>However, Mumbai continues to house large slum dwellings with the Dharavi slums, measuring just about 2.4 sqkm being the largest and is home to an estimated 1 million of the 12 million denizens of the megapolis, which has become one of the most infected areas of the city.</p><p>Dharavi, the largest informal economy of the financial capital with an estimated USD 1 billion in annual GDP has come to a total standstill due to the lockdown. Dharavi is the largest slum cluster in entire Asia.</p><p>With around 140 coronavirus cases detected in the slum, experts are fearing the numbers to rise significantly in the days to come.</p><p>"How can we expect a person to live in such an environment that we created for low-cost housing? Would we be fair towards the occupants for the lifestyle and hygiene that is offered?" Tata asked the architects.</p><p>Nearly 5,000 participants across the sector participated in the webinar. </p><p>He went onto say that "if we are proud of what we do, then we should be ashamed of what we have done to cities because we have tried to build an image we want to project of ourselves publicly and also try to hide the rest and we get offended when people criticise us for that".</p><p>He also emphasised that there should be a re-examination of what we would consider as acceptable standard in terms of for quality of life.</p><p>"It seems to stop at the areas with the slums are being replaced and I use the word again the residue is the slum. It's like putting the garbage together and calling it a community pushing it 20-30 miles out making it difficult to survive. So perhaps there ought to be a revision in terms of the fact that we are dealing with," he said.</p><p>Tata said this community wants to be a part of the new India and the architects and developers are dogged by that issue.</p><p>"We are, however, creating a community that we are ashamed of. We should be driven by a desire of being proud of what we do even if it is low cost or affordable housing. It should be done in a way that it creates a world culture, it creates a usage of space and offer fresh air, among others," he added.</p><p>He further said architects and developers have a social responsibility to do something that they are not ashamed of.</p><p>"In the slums they created, there is no fresh air. It's just a space for living, because it is done through corruption and coercion. This is what architects and developers have been satisfied with and I think this pandemic is a wake-up call of what beholds us if that's what our concern is," Tata warned.  </p><p>Corpgini and Z Nation Lab CEO Amit Jain said the uncertainty looming across businesses, COVID-19 is reshaping the architecture, engineering and construction. </p>"Real estate and design industry landscape morphing longstanding norms and realities. The latest sets of data from the two of India’s biggest metro cities, New Delhi and Mumbai, has sparked the hope for herd immunity against COVID-19 but experts warn it may be too soon to rejoice. <br /><br />More than half of the population residing in slums in three different regions in Mumbai contracted coronavirus and developed its anti-bodies, according to a sero-surveillance study conducted by the city’s civic body, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFRE) and NITI Aayog (India’s premier think tank). <br /><br />    <div type="image" title="Mumbai Sero Survey" msid="77238688" hostid="261"></div><br />Mumbai, where 800,000 people live in slums, has reported over 110,000 infections and 6,000 fatalities till June 29. The interesting thing about the study is it was only looking for asymptomatic individuals. Symptomatic people are going to the system, they are getting treated, managed etc. Asymptomatic is something none of us could understand,” Dr. Marcus Ranney, General Manager (India) Thrive Global explained.<br /><br />This comes a week after a Delhi government survey stated that 30% of the people living in the national capital had anti-bodies of COVID-19. This is a very contagious infection, and it is clear that the virus can be devastating to those over the age of 60 or with underlying medical conditions,” said  Issac Bogoch from the University of Toronto, Canada <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/science/health/news/herd-immunity-doesnt-seem-to-work-for-covid-19-need-to-be-careful/articleshow/77218380.cms">said in an interview with IANS</a>.<br /><br />The other downside of living in the hope of herd immunity is that it could put a lot of vulnerable people at risk. <br /><br />“Asymptomatic carry the same viral load as a symptomatic patient and they are not protected. An asymptomatic carrier is as lethal and as vulnerable as symptomatic. One asymptomatic can spread it to 217 people if the person is in a closed/family range, ” Prof. Dr. Sanjeev Bagai, the chairperson of Nephron Clinics, told Business Insider India <br /><br />Many of these people who get the virus passed on to them could be older people and those with co-morbidities like diabetes, Hepatitis and heart diseases to name a few. <br /><br />India has been the third-worst affected country and has reported 1.5 million cases. And even if a person does develop antibodies to fight COVID-19, they may not stay in the body forever. Research studies across the world have shown that the immunity drops 8 weeks or so after contracting COVID-19, according to Bagai.<br /><br />Even Ranney, who hopes that there will be herd immunity someday, warns against lowering the guard too soon. <br /><br />“We do not know the period of time this immunity lasts. We could see a repeated infection in the same individual (recovered patients). India hastily erected a 7-foot wall so that Trump wouldn't have to see a slum on his way to a rally

Delhi's Seelampur Basti could not stop rejoicing when 14 children who grew up here were abe to make their way to the prestigious <keyword id="6360099" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-University">Delhi University</keyword> by the time the second cut-off list was out. <br />

14 students, 12 of whom are girls, have secured admission in popular North campus colleges out of the 78 students who appeared for class XII examination from Seelampur slum area.<br />
 <br /> The highest scorer Saugatha has managed to secure a seat in Urdu Honours in <keyword id="117655" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kirori-Mal-College">Kirori Mal College</keyword> at 86.5 per cent. Her father is a street vendor. <br />

Even as the credit goes to these hard working students who have made their basti proud, significant efforts by an NGO called Asha in educating the slum children and helping them achieve higher education, has been instrumental in helping such bright kids enter Delhi University year-on-year.<br />

Last year, a whopping 114 students guided by this NGO had made the cut. Sandeep, with 94% marks, got the highest score in this group in 2015. He lived in a slum in north Delhi’s Peeragarhi and managed to secure a seat in Rajdhani College for B.Com (Hons). The year before, in 2014, least 150 slum kids got admission in DU.<br />

For these students, the main difficulty was not just to get resources to study, but a larger battle of convincing parents to allow them to pursue education as against using them to start earning and contributing to the family income. For Asha the NGO, there have been such challenges of counseling the family, especially that of girls, before they can start educating and preparing the kid for exams. Their help then extends to dressing them up with new clothes, planning their travel, helping them fill college admission forms, get educational loans for those who wish to study in private colleges.<br />

Since 2008, Asha has been helping students from the slums to go to university. In the first batch, 20 students had got admission in DU and the numbers have been increasing since then. Although this year the students qualifying to DU are less than last year, its too early to say because three cut-off lists are still awaited.<br />
