Fourty-one-year-old <keyword id="10262" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Emily">Emily</keyword>, a health co-ordinator from Montana befriended 23-year-old <keyword id="3318890" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Devesh-Chavda">Devesh Chavda</keyword>, who lives in an <keyword id="5065" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ahmedabad">Ahmedabad</keyword> slum on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=facebook&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Facebook</a>. 
 
Sparks flew and both of them fell in love, despite the language barrier. 
 
Speaking to the Sun about how they would converse with each other, Hitesh said, “Neither of us knew each other’s language so I would copy and paste her messages using <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=google&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Google </a>Hindi translation to understand what she was trying to say. 
 
"I would then compose my own message in Hindi, translate into English and then send it to her.” 
 
Eventually, they started keeping in touch via Google’s video chat and after around twelve months of online romance, Emily decided it was time to meet Hitesh in person. 
 
Last week, she flew down to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ahmedabad&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ahmedabad</a>, and ended up marrying Hitesh in a Hindu ceremony on the very day they met in person for the first time. 
 
According to Hitesh, Emily and him spoke either in broken English or through gestures when they met in person. He added that he thought it was high time they got out of the phase of indecisiveness and took the plunge as they were dating for almost a year. 
 
And, thus what was supposed to be their first date turned out to be the couple’s Wedding day. 
 
Though his parents were unhappy about the cross-cultural and cross-continental relationship at first, Hitesh somehow managed to convince his parents to support them. 
 
The couple admit that they both fell in love with each other’s simplicity and innocence. Emily is so in love with Hitesh that she even decided to learn Indian cooking. 
 
As of the moment, the couple is planning to visit the U.S in a month or so to celebrate their honeymoon. But, once that is done, Emily claimed that she is going to settle down in India with her unemployed husband and her in-laws in that very Ahmebadad slum. 
 
Well, we’re at a loss for words. But we do wish the very best for these two lovebirds!

New Delhi, Apr 7 () Vedanta Ltd on Tuesday said it will distribute around three lakh meals to labourers, daily wage earners and slum dwellers in the national capital as part of efforts to support communities during the current coronavirus lockdown. "Vedanta Ltd...has been distributing 10,000 meals per day to daily wage earners, slum dwellers and labourers since April 1. Around 70,000 meals have been distributed till date to families in Old Delhi, Laxmi Bai Nagar, Ram Nagar, Sarojini Nagar and Gole Market. Under this initiative, around 3 lakh meals will be distributed around Delhi by the end of the month," leading metal and mining firm said in a statement. The families comprising of daily wage earners, slum-dwellers and labourers have been adversely impacted due to the current lockdown implemented to combat the deadly coronavirus. This initiative of Vedanta is in partnership with the district administration, in which the meals are being distributed to affected areas as per the direction from the district administration. "The daily wage earners are our lifeline in our everyday life. Our Chairman Anil Agarwal has been in the forefront of extending all support to feed daily wage workers with our 'Meals for All' initiative. We have partnered AkshayaPatra who are extending this support to feed the needy inDelhi," said Ritu Jhingon, CEO of Nand Ghar project, Vedanta Ltd. For this initiative, Vedanta has collaborated with AkshayaPatra Foundation, a non-profit organisation that runs the mid-day meal scheme in government and government-aided schools across India. Nand Ghar is committed to the Prime Minister's national vision of eradicating child malnutrition, providing education, healthcare and empowering women with skill development. "We are immensely grateful to Vedanta for their support in these crucial times. Their generous contribution will enable us to serve freshly cooked meals to thousands of people from vulnerable communities, affected by the nation-wide lockdown. We are thankful to Chairman Anil Agarwal and Vedanta Group for providing us with the opportunity to serve the marginal society in NCR. "Their timely involvement gives us the confidence to commit to the service of the people of our country," AkshayaPatra Foundation Chief Marketing Officer Sundeep Talwar said. But it’s time we did. A group of teenage girls needs us to. 
 A bunch of 12 to 14-year old girls of <keyword id="6361831" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="dharavi">Dharavi</keyword>, who have been fondly nicknamed the ‘<keyword id="3315631" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dharavi-coders">Dharavi coders</keyword>,’ are driving change with the help of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=technology&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">technology</a>. 
 
An initiative which was started by filmmaker Nawneet Ranjan in 2014, who permanently moved to Mumbai from San Francisco after being moved by the lack of inspiration or ambition in the lives of the girls who lived in these slums and who witnessed daily occurings of starvation, injustices and domestic violence. 
 
He vowed to do something about it and decided to instill in them the ability of dream and have oodles of confidence by introducing them to computers. As a part of Dharavi Diary of 2014, a slum innovation project that he began, he ensured that the girls were taught coding through the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Learning Program. 
 
Later, they also used an open source app development tool, MIT App Inventor, to create their <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=apps&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">apps</a>. 
 The initiative has paid off tremendously as the girls have developed a bunch of <keyword id="6354741" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Apps">apps</keyword> that tackle most of the everyday problems faced by the residents living in the slums. 
 
For instance, they innovated an app called Paani which alerts the slum residents when it is their turn to collect water from the community tap, making the lives of the slum dwellers a whole lot easier as they didn’t have to waste time standing long hours in a queue every day. 
 
 
 
That’s not all. They also have an app focusing on women safety. Called, Women Fight Back, the app has a distress alarm, location mapping, SMS alert and a feature that helps one select emergency contact numbers. 
 
Some of the girls have built another app that intends to make Education simpler. Instead of the traditional teaching in classrooms route, the app teaches subjects like Science, English and Math through experiential activities such as taking photographs of objects to learn what it is called. 
 
They haven’t stopped there. 
 
Another app teaches kids the importance of segregating waste and waste management in general. It also gives ideas to recycle items to create new products. 
 
What started as a small project with just 15 girls has today become a project which ahs roped in 200 students, including boys- giving the children of Dharavi an opportunity to dream. That too in just two years. 
 
A recent fire in the slum in January however caused serious damage and led to the children losing their mobiles, laptops apart from everyday essentials like blankets, clothes, books, utensils and beds. 
 It’s time these young <keyword id="3315632" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="tech-developers">tech developers</keyword> need help. Nawneet Ranjan himself is urging people to.

Meet the Dharavi girls who are developing apps for
women safety, education and more

Amidst a growing culture around the world characterized by “if you’re not with us, then you must be with ‘them’”, I hope my post will be read with an open mind and will be taken in the right spirit. 
 A lot of eminent people have lauded the recent move by the government to ban R.500 and R.1000 notes as bold and a master stroke. Any objections to this move have been primarily based on the day-to-day inconvenience it is causing to common people. Proponents of the move have urged their fellow citizens to bear with these inconveniences for the larger good - the interest of the nation. But is there a clear case for its effect on the <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> to be positive? 
 
The key assumption behind the move is that the large informal economy in India (estimated to be almost equal in size to the formal economy), will now be forced to integrate with the formal economy giving it a huge boost. While the note ban would no doubt stifle the informal economy, have we created the other necessary conditions for the informal economy to join the mainstream? Clearly, no. If we do not create these facilitating conditions alongside with the measures to restrain the informal economy, then we are addressing only a part of the problem, and further aggravating the situation. It is like demolishing slums without creating alternative housing for the slum dwellers. Let me explain it better by taking the example of one important part of the informal economy - the informal lending market. 
 The informal lending or credit market exists in parallel to the formal credit markets such as banks (state, private, co-operative), non-banking finance companies (<keyword id="6354598" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="NBFCs">NBFCs</keyword>), micro-lending institutions etc. The informal credit market, which is estimated to be nearly equal in size to the formal one, consists of local moneylenders, pawnbrokers, politicians etc. The annual interest charged in this market could range from 18% to 300% and the lenders are typically portrayed as villains. Despite their many ills, many studies around the world have established the important role played by these players and the informal credit markets in supporting the formal economy. 
 
This is because the borrowers in this market are typically small entrepreneurs, uneducated and unskilled laborers, slum dwellers etc. who are assessed as non-creditworthy by the formal lending institutions and hence do not have access to formal credit. Informal markets are the only source of credit for these borrowers, who nevertheless contribute significantly to the economy through millions of small businesses. The scale of operations in this market is very small with the loans ranging from R.500 to R.5000, there is hardly any collateral and the entire money circulation is typically in cash. 
 Now I urge you to assess the impact of the note ban on this constituency. Because the high denomination cash is rendered worthless, a major part of the supply is cut off, at least temporarily. But the demand is still there! And there are no alternative sources of credit available to these borrowers. It is true that millions of bank accounts have been opened under the recent Prime Minister <keyword id="6392137" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jan-dhan-Yojana">Jan Dhan Yojana</keyword>, but that doesn’t make a difference as the banks’ lending conditions (need for collateral etc.) remain unchanged. Do you think banks will start lending to them overnight? No chance! So you will see a skyrocketing of interest rates in the informal market in the short term, much beyond the already exorbitant rates. 
 
Over a period of time new cash will be generated, but meanwhile, the squeeze on the borrowers, who are probably the true middle class, will be immense. A significant proportion of this borrower-base consists of small entrepreneurs who contribute to a large portion of our economic activity. It will be great if they can be brought into the mainstream economy but any measures for doing that are conspicuously missing in the recent announcement. 
 
So the ‘inconvenience’ to the common man is not going to be merely temporary as being assumed by the government. In fact, unless the government comes up urgently with a series of mechanisms to facilitate the integration of the informal economy with the formal, this move has all the potential to even bring down the government in the next election. 
 
To repeat, it has similar political and moral implications to demolishing slums without creating alternative housing. The key difference, in this case, is that the affected population is not just marginal, but actually constitutes the core India, arguably the real India. Politicians can go against them at their own peril. Viewed from this perspective, you have to agree with the experts that it is indeed a bold move!

Bengaluru, May 4 () The Indian women's hockey team has raised funds to the tune of Rs 20 lakh to help in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. The Indian team raised the money thorough an 18-day fitness challenge, which concluded on May 3 and resulted in raising Rs 20, 01,130. The funds have been donated to Delhi-based NGO Uday Foundation. The funds will be used to provide basic necessities for patients at various locations, migrant workers and slum dwellers. "The response we have received was really overwhelming. People, especially Indian hockey lovers from across the globe took part in the challenge and contributed to the cause. "On behalf of the Indian Women Team, I would like to thank everyone who took part in this initiative to help the poor," India skipper Rani Rampal said. The challenge involved the team members who came up with different fitness tasks that ranged from burpees, lunges, squats to spider-man pushups, pogo hops and more.
