Space-tech company Skyroot raises ₹225 cr in pre-Series C funding

The Hyderabad-based space startup also aims to slash the costs of space travel in the future. "..now that we have done the first private rocket launch, Vikram-S, our next plan is to launch Vikram-1 which is a much bigger rocket putting satellites into orbit. That we want to do within a year from now," Pawan Chandana, co-founder of <keyword id="9750118" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="skyroot" source="Orion">Skyroot</keyword>, told PTI here Monday evening. Skyroot also wants to become one of the first few companies in the world that can place satellites into orbit. He said the firm has raised about USD 68 million, which is the largest in the aerospace startup ecosystem in India. "Of course, it took close to four years to raise this kind of capital. Now, we are good for the first few launches to orbit and then, of course, it has been very challenging because first time somebody went to the market and raised such large capital," Chandana said. Skyroot would keep on raising more capital in its journey forward and would like to generate a good amount of revenue as it starts launching next year, he said. Noting that space travel is expensive now, he said his firm aims to slash costs, make it affordable and increase reliability. "Today, the biggest problem is that space travel is very costly. Because, rockets, the only way to go to space are very unreliable. Sometimes, they don't work and are also very expensive. They fall into the sea and then you are building something, throwing it away. It's very costly," he said. Skyroot Aerospace plans to launch another rocket Vikram-1, in one year

The Vikram-S rocket, developed over the past two years and built using 3-D printing technology, reached an altitude of 89.5 km. The space balloon will be slowly deflated and a parachute unpacked to bring down the spaceship. At a definite point, the space balloon will be detached from the capsule and the tourists brought down safely. "The fee is reasonable. Skyroot Aerospace's rocket Vikram-S with three small satellites is scheduled for launch on November 18 at 11.30 a.m. "Launch is likely on 18th as the weather is predicted to be ideal. Due to inclement weather, we got an updated launch window of November 15-19, 2022," Chandana said. According to him, the Vikram-S rocket is a scaled down version of Vikram-1 rocket. The former is a single stage rocket whereas the latter is a multi-stage vehicle. "Almost all our systems flying in Vikram-S were designed in-house, except for few sensors which were imported," Chandana said. The rocket will be powered by a single stage to help test and validate the majority of the technologies in the <keyword id="1091" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vikram" source="Orion">Vikram</keyword> series of rockets. The company plans to have three rocket variants: Vikram I - payload or carrying capacity 480 kg to 500 km low inclination orbit (LIO); 290 kg to 500 km sun synchronous and polar orbit (SSPO); Vikram II - 595 kg to 500 km LIO, 400 kg to 500 km SSPO and Vikram III - 815 kg to 500 km LIO, 560 kg to 500 km SSPO. ISRO's rocket launch and tracking fee is nominal: Skyroot Aerospace

India on Friday successfully placed three satellites into orbit on a rocket completely developed by a four-year-old startup, marking the entry of the private sector into space activities, currently dominated by the state-run behemoth ISRO. <keyword id="7537495" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="skyroot-aerospace" source="Orion">Skyroot Aerospace</keyword>-designed Vikram-S, named in a befitting tribute to the father of the country's space programme <keyword id="29151" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vikram-sarabhai" source="Orion">Vikram Sarabhai</keyword>, tasted success in its maiden mission. Skyroot Aerospace become the first privately held company in India after the space sector was opened for private players by the Centre in 2020. "I am happy to announce the successful completion of Mission Prarambh, The Beginning, by Skyroot aerospace," a smiling Pawan Goenka, Chairman of the country's space regulator, Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (INSPACe), said from ISRO's Mission Control Center here. The rocket achieved an altitude of 89.5 km and a range of 121.2 km, "exactly what was planned by Skyroot Aerospace," he said. The rocket "worked as planned" and Skyroot Aerospace has demonstrated various capabilities of sub-systems that will go into the orbital launch vehicle, he added. The rocket integrated into the launcher soared after lifting off at the prefixed 11.30 am from the sounding rocket complex at the Indian Space Research Organisation's Satish Dhawan Space Centre, here, about 115 km from Chennai. The Mission unveiled by ISRO Chairman S Somanath has three payloads with two belonging to domestic customers and one from a foreign client. The 6-metre tall launch vehicle is one of the world's first few all-composite rockets that has 3-D printed solid thrusters for spin stability of the launch vehicle. "This is a new beginning for the Indian private sector entering aerospace and a historic moment for all of us," Goenka said. The three payloads riding piggyback on the rocket are from Chennai-based start-up SpaceKidz, Andhra Pradesh-based N-SpaceTech and Armenian BazoomQ Space Research Lab. Vikram-S launched the payloads in about 500 km low inclination orbit. In a departure from the routine, Friday's mission was launched from the complex where sounding rockets were used by ISRO. The Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in <keyword id="6355143" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sriharikota" source="Orion">Sriharikota</keyword> has two launch complexes, each capable of providing complete support for vehicle assembly, check out and launch operations for any kind of missions -- Low Earth Orbit, Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit. PSLVs and GSLVs are launched from here. Friday's mission is considered to be a significant milestone for Skyroot Aerospace as it would help test and validate the majority of the technologies in the <keyword id="1091" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="vikram" source="Orion">Vikram</keyword> series of orbital class space launch vehicles, including many sub-systems and technologies that would be tested before lift-off and post-lift off phases of the launch. 'Fun-Sat', a 2.5 kgs payload belonging to Chennai-based aerospace startup Spacekidz, has been developed by students from India, the United States, Singapore and Indonesia. The 545 kg Vikram launch vehicle consists of the Vikram II and Vikram III series. The technology architecture of the launch vehicle offers unique capabilities like multi-orbit insertion and interplanetary missions while providing customised, dedicated and ride-share options covering a wide spectrum of small satellite customer needs, Skyroot Aerospace said. The company added the rockets can be assembled and launched within 24 hours from any launch site. Euro hits 20-yr low as Russian pipe shutdown rocks markets

In a chat with IANS, Ravichandran who is ecstatic after Agnikul Cosmos was granted access to the Indian Space Research Organisation (<keyword id="6358064" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro" source="Orion">ISRO</keyword>) facilities and expertise for the development and testing of systems and subsystems of its rockets, said that the pact with ISRO will allow them to ultilise its facilities to test out various sub-systems of their launch vehicle. "This will, in turn, help us with reduced capital expenditure and expedited testing," he said. "India can have its own SpaceX or Blue Origin kind of mega private space firm in the near future. There is so much support from the government and investors are open to invest too in the homegrown spacetech startups," Ravichandran added. The next step, he added, will be to aim multiple launches per year and scale to the extent of having a launch once in two-three weeks. "Beyond that would be about making the vehicles more efficient, thereby providing even cheaper access to customers. We are doing this through a mix of innovations on various technologies in the vehicle," Ravichandran informed. Last month, Chennai-based Agnikul Cosmos received the nod by the Department of Space to carry out multiple tests and qualify its single piece 3D-printed semi-cryogenic engine and other systems of its rocket at various ISRO centres. This is the second pact that the Department of Space has signed with a rocket maker, after the first with Hyderabad-based <keyword id="7537495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="skyroot-aerospace" source="Orion">Skyroot Aerospace</keyword> on September 11. According to Ravichandran, their rocket engines are 100 per cent 3D-printed, that too in a single shot. "This allows us to directly assemble what comes out of the 3D printer in our launch vehicle. The big advantage of this is the ability to provide and enable rapid launch access and, at the same time, make customisable launch vehicles," elaborated Ravichandran. He formed the startup with Moin SPM within IIT-Madras with a seed funding of Rs 3 crore, with an aim to develop and launch its first rocket in 2021 and subsequently develop ability to provide launch service for satellites. The current investors in the spacetech startup are Mayfield India, PI Ventures, Speciale Invest, Beenext, Artha and others. In June, India decided to allow private companies to establish and operate rocket launch sites within and outside the country, subject to prior authorisation from the government. Similarly, any rocket launch (orbital or sub-orbital) from Indian or overseas territory can be carried out only with authorisation from Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Center (IN-SPACe), an independent body constituted by the Government of India, under the Department of Space (DOS). The launch could be from own or leased launch site and also from mobile platforms (land, sea or air) as per the Draft National Space Transportation Policy-2020 brought out by the Department of Space. "Now that we also have to plan the entire engine building facility in-house, we are confident that we can control engine making end-to-end in India, thereby not only enabling 'make in India' but also 'design in India'," Ravichandran told IANS. He said that anyone who wants to do a space tech startup should do it today. "Right now is the best time to do a spacetech startup in India. The government has been very forthcoming in terms of the help provided to enable private missions and now would be a good time to get started to get things done," Ravichandran noted. <ul><li><keyword id="7537495" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Skyroot-Aerospace">Skyroot Aerospace</keyword> is the first private company in India to successfully test launch a homegrown rocket engine. </li><li>The company’s co-founder <keyword id="7537908" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pawan-Kumar-Chandana">Pawan Kumar Chandana</keyword> told Business Insider that Skyroot Aerospace is on track to test-launch its first full rocket by December 2021.</li><li>Two more rocket stages will be tested within the next six months.</li></ul>"We will be one of India’s first private launch vehicle makers,” Skyroot Aerospace co-founder Naga Bharath Daka said in <a href="https://m.timesofindia.com/companies/hyderabad-startup-set-to-test-launch-vikram-series-of-rockets/amp_articleshow/69041671.cms">April 2019</a>. One year down the line, the Indian startup is the first private company in India to have successfully launched a homegrown rocket engine. It is not an entire rocket yet, but the company plans to have that off the ground as well by December next year, CEO and co-founder of Skyroot Aerospace Pawan Kumar Chandana told Business Insider. Chandana and Daka are both former Indian Space Research Organisation (<keyword id="6358064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword>) scientists. In another six months, the company aims to test two more rocket stages. The fourth and final stage will take another year to test. In December 2021, the first rocket will be tested. If it passes the test, Skyroot Aerospace has plans to build an entire family of Vikram rockets to send satellites into space. Successful test of the upper stage rocket engine “It [the rocket] is a three-stage rocket with a small liquid module, which is called the orbit adjustment model. The engines tested today belong to the orbit adjustment model,” Chandana told Business Insider. The upper stage rocket engine powers the final thrusts of a spacecraft as it positions satellites into the Earth’s orbit. Skyroot Aerospace’s upper stage rocket engine is India’s first entirely 3-D printed one. The engine will run on high-performance cryogenic propellants — fuels that require extremely low temperatures to stay liquid — like liquid natural gas (LNG) and liquid oxygen. The reason rockets need cryogenic propellants is that temperatures drop drastically in outer space. Outside the Earth’s atmosphere, there is also a lack of oxygen, so the element’s liquified form helps the fuel combust or burn. One launch, multiple orbits The test of the upper rocket stage demonstrated the capabilities of the orbit adjustment model, also called the 3D-printed bi-propellant liquid rocket engine ejector. It reduced the overall mass of the upper stage by 50%, reduced the total number of components required, and cut down on lead time by 80%. The bigger factor is that it is capable of multiple restarts. This means it can insert different satellites across varied orbits in a single mission. Skyroot Aerospace’s investors include Myntra and CureFit founder Mukesh Bansal, Vendashu Investments, and others. It has raised ₹ 31.5 crore so far and is in the process of bringing in another ₹ 90 crore this year.

Founded by two former scientists of the <keyword id="116095" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> (<keyword id="6358064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword>) — Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka — the company behind the rocket, Skyroot Aerospace, has successfully test-fired its first solid rocket propulsion stage demonstrator called Kalam-5. <div type="javascript" title="Custom" contenttype="Video"><cdata><![CDATA[]]></cdata></div> Kalam-5 uses the exact same propellant, materials, and interface as the three solid propulsion stages of the Vikram-1 launch vehicle, according to Chandana. It is the first of the five Kalam engines that Skyroot plans to test. "The 'Vikram-1' rocket has three solid fuel-powered stages each with a burn time ranging between 80 and 100 seconds. The full scale solid fuel stage will be tested at the ISRO facility soon. The burn time will be 100 seconds," he said. Propulsion systems are where the actual magic happens to get rockets off the planet and into space. If anything goes wrong, infamous results can range from pre-launch explosions to the rocket simply falling out of the sky. Making sure that the propulsion system not only works properly but also provides an adequate thrust to beat gravity is crucial to the success of any rocket. <div type="image" title="2_edited" msid="79989119" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Kalam-5 test fired at private facility on December 22 in Nagpur&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Kalam-5 is a solid motor. These are high thrust, low-cost rocket engines with propellant in solid form. In addition to being cost-effective, they are also highly reliable with fewer moving parts. Right now, Kalam-5 gives a peak sea-level thrust of 5.3kN, can handle the pressure of 66 atmospheres and temperatures of up to 30,000 degrees Celsius. It is only one-fourth the size of the solid motor in Vikram 1’s third stage. “Kalam-5 uses 15 different advanced materials, nine different manufacturing processes and has zero moving parts,” Chandana explained. Skyroot is backed by investors like Solar Industries, Vedanshu Investments, and Myntra founder Mukesh Bansal. It has raised $4.3 million till now and is in the process of raising another $15 million in 2021. Of the influenza A viruses detected and subtyped this season, 78 per cent have been influenza A (H3N2) and 22 per cent have been influenza A (H1N1), according to the CDC. The CDC said an annual flu vaccine is the best way to protect against the flu. Vaccination helps prevent infection and can also prevent serious outcomes. The CDC recommends that everyone ages 6 months and older get a flu vaccine annually. For a half-century, scientists have been trying to develop a vaccine that would protect against the most dangerous flu viruses. According to New York Post, French scientists have sparked fears of yet another pandemic after reviving the "<keyword id="14706038" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zombie-virus" source="Orion">zombie virus</keyword>". New York Post is a daily tabloid newspaper published in New York City. New York Post has quoted a viral study which is yet to be peer-reviewed. "The situation would be much more disastrous in the case of plant, animal, or human diseases caused by the revival of an ancient unknown virus," reads the "viral" study. According to the preliminary report, global warming is irrevocably thawing enormous swathes of permafrost -- permanently frozen ground that covers one-quarter of the Northern Hemisphere. This has had the unsettling effect of "releasing organic materials frozen for up to a million years" - possibly deadly germs included. "Part of this organic matter also consists of revived cellular microbes (prokaryotes, unicellular eukaryotes) as well as viruses that remained dormant since prehistorical times," the researchers write. According to the New York Post, scientists have, perhaps strangely, revived some of these so-called "zombie viruses" from the Siberian permafrost in order to investigate the awakening critters. The oldest, Pandoravirus yedoma, was 48,500 years old, a record age for a frozen virus returning to a form where it may infect other creatures. This breaks the previous record of a 30,000-year-old virus identified in Siberia by the same scientists in 2013. The new strain is one of 13 viruses described in the study, each with its own genome, according to Science Alert. While the Pandoravirus was discovered at the bottom of a lake in Yukechi Alas, Yakutia, Russia, others have been discovered everywhere from mammoth fur to Siberian wolf intestines. Scientists discovered that all of the "zombie viruses" have the potential to be infectious and hence pose a "health danger" after researching the live cultures. They believe that COVID-19-style pandemics will become more common in the future as melting permafrost releases long-dormant viruses like a microbial Captain America, as per New York Post. "It is therefore legitimate to ponder the risk of ancient viral particles remaining infectious and getting back into circulation by the thawing of ancient permafrost layers," they write. Unfortunately, it's a vicious cycle as organic matter released by the thawing ice decomposes into carbon dioxide and methane, further enhancing the greenhouse effect and accelerating the melt. New York Post reports that the newly thawed virus might only be the tip of the epidemiological iceberg as there are likely more hibernating viruses yet to be discovered. More research is needed to assess the level of infectiousness of these unknown viruses when exposed to light, heat, oxygen, and other outside environmental variables.
