A Reddit user <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/oz0hzy/new_youtube_slide_to_seek_feature/h7xg51u/">magnatronmusic31</a> discovered the feature as confirmed by <a href="https://www.androidpolice.com/2021/08/09/gesture-galore-youtube-adds-a-simpler-way-to-move-between-video-chapters/">Android Police</a>. The chapters are different sections of a YouTube video that lets users preview its name and additional information. The feature is said to be an addition to the newly launched video scrubbing gesture on YouTube. By a simple tap and hold with your finger on the screen and then sliding it left or right you can scrub through the video.The two-finger gesture will only work on videos with chapters embedded in them. This new feature will help users skip to their favourite chapters with ease. Earlier, users could skip 10 seconds by double tapping with one finger. You will not trigger the 10 seconds-skip with the new gesture since it requires you to use two fingers. It is easier to use as the gesture in the landscape mode, while using it in the portrait mode needs some more precision. How does the gesture work Using this gesture, you can move both forward and backward in a video. If you wish to skip to a chapter ahead, you will have to use the two-finger double tap on the right side of the screen. Similarly, if you wish to go backwards, you will need to tap on the left of your screen. The two finger double tap gesture is currently available for Android beta users v16.31.35. It is still unclear if this gesture is related to the scrubbing feature, which is still not seen on many devices having the latest Android beta update. The features are still in the roll-out phase and they will be available on your Android device with the latest update soon. I customized it and shared my customizations on XDA Developers, a mobile software development community. This led to me making and selling icons and wallpapers, which was my first experience <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-ways-to-make-money-as-content-creator">making money online</a>.I used the money from selling these digital products to buy my first computer, a used iMac. Until then, I had to share a family computer. I made enough money to support myself that year — I paid them rent and helped with household bills.I shared my design work on Dribbble, where clients started to notice me. I have no formal training.My themes became popular, and in 2014, I was approved to sell them on Tumblr's official online store, which significantly increased my income.My income had been around $20,000 to $30,000 a year, sometimes even less. Once I started selling on Tumblr, my income grew to six figures.I was still living with my parents when this financial success happened. They were still skeptical. I stayed with them for a few more years, saving as much as possible until I was ready to move out and find my first house.<h2 id="4dc124f9-fd2b-4a8d-af8e-689e69684692">I'm the first person in my family to purchase my own home</h2>I was around 23 when I started to see significant money from Tumblr. Knowing that success wouldn't last forever, I focused on learning new web design and development skills. This strategic move and saving most of my earnings allowed me to buy my first house.Now living on my own, I became a founding designer at a company called Plasso, where I worked for a year. I had always wanted to be part of a startup. Plasso paid well and I was given shares in the company for being an early employee.This venture paid off when Plasso was bought by GoDaddy, resulting in a significant payout for me.<h2 id="6da7b2dd-c139-45ea-96ee-2fdbcfcd74bf">I expanded my income streams after leaving the startup</h2>I started an online store called ULX Store in 2018 to sell my designs and other products.I started a YouTube channel in 2015 to provide insights I wish were available to me at a younger age, demonstrating that success is attainable without a privileged background or formal education.I began taking it seriously around 2020 when I realized its potential for scalable income through sponsorships and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/passive-income-built-website-google-adsense-2023-5">Adsense revenue</a>. My channel grew to around 100,000 subscribers, which attracted sponsorships and enabled me to charge significantly for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-sponsored-on-instagram">sponsored content</a>.Then, also in 2020, I was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ignored-colon-cancer-symptoms-diagnosis-abdominal-pain-bloody-stool-2024-3">diagnosed with cancer</a>. Our desk accessories were in high demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic.That year, the store generated around $1M in revenue, contributing to my most profitable year yet.<h2 id="cbea26ec-63ca-417c-b384-245d7c448704">It's essential to diversify income streams and learn new skills</h2>After my diagnosis, I worked to ensure my business could operate without my direct involvement as I took time to care for myself. I was still earning a significant amount in passive income from YouTube Adsense, digital product sales, and sponsorships arranged earlier in the year, which was astonishing to me.Once I recovered, I gradually returned to work in early 2021, focusing more on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/youtube-valuation-mrbeast-how-much-worth-2024-3">YouTube</a> as it had grown significantly. In 2023, I earned around $600,000 a year from all my income streams.My approach to online business emphasizes starting with one main income stream and then using the earnings from that to diversify into other areas. I've always saved a large portion of my income, which has been crucial for building my wealth and investing in new ventures.<h2 id="33a24cee-07df-4f4a-b70b-ab87d13edb32">I have a few long-term goals</h2>Since turning 30 and considering <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/scrapped-big-120-person-wedding-for-intimate-family-affair-empowering-2024-1">future family planning</a>, I'm focused on securing a financial foundation for myself and my potential children. I don't see myself retiring because I enjoy what I do too much and find it fulfilling. San Francisco, May 29 (IANS) YouTube has started rolling out its video chapters features with the aim of helping its users on desktop, mobile or tablets to focus on the portions that matter the most to them. The feature will also allow creators to better organise their content. It is expected to be particularly of great help for long-form videos. With such videos organised by chapters, just like a book, users will be able to skip some portions that they may find irrelevant. "The Video Chapters feature is officially here," the YouTube Twitter handle for creators said on Thursday. "When Chapters are enabled, viewers watch more of the video, and come back more often on average," it added. The video chapters feature was soft launched by YouTube in April, The Verge reported. YouTube users on desktop would know if the video they are watching has chapters when they hover the mouse over the bar that indicates video progress. This bar will have breaks to indicate the end of one chapter and beginning of another. Hovering over these little breaks will also tell you the name of the chapters. The same applies to users of other mobile devices as well. But YouTube's phone app will trigger a haptic buzz the moment a user reaches the next chapter. On other mobile devices, such as tablets, where haptic feedback is not available, when a user lifts his/her finger off the screen, the video progress bar will automatically snap to the beginning of a new chapter, said the report. --IANS gb/na

But that doesn't mean he'll agree to every new idea of how to continue the franchise.Macchio felt the Daniel LaRusso character had run its course after starring in "Karate Kid" parts 2 and 3. But he realized the hunger for the franchise would never go away, as he continued to get pitched offers over the decades. These ranged from a story arch in which the kids of LaRusso and Rocky Balboa would team up (more on that later), to being offered a cameo in the Jackie Chan/Jaden Smith 2010 reboot.Macchio always politely declined the offers, but that changed when Jon Hurwitz, Josh Heald, and Hayden Schlossberg <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cobra-kai-creators-explain-how-they-made-the-karate-kid-show-2018-5">came to him with the idea for a show called "Cobra Kai."</a>Set in the present day, "Cobra Kai" shifts the focus from LaRusso to Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), the bully who LaRusso beat at the karate tournament at the end of the first movie. The first season of the show became an instant hit for YouTube by mixing a dark comedic tone about mid-life anxieties with nostalgic glimpses from the original movie. In it, we follow Lawrence who brings back the Cobra Kai dojo while LaRusso, who is now the owner of a successful car dealership, catches on to what Lawrence is doing and tries to put a stop to it.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Now there's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-comedy-shows-on-netflix-orange-is-the-new-black-after-life-2019-4">high anticipation</a> for the launch of season two (starting Wednesday on YouTube) as a familiar face enters the Cobra Kai dojo, John Kreese (Martin Love), the man who trained Lawrence in the first movie. Meanwhile, LaRusso has decided to start the Miyagi dojo, named after his sensei Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita), to combat what he believes is a negative way of doing karate that the Cobra Kai dojo promotes.Business Insider chatted with Macchio about what finally sold him to come back and play LaRusso, the worst "The Karate Kid" sequel pitch he ever got, who he hung out the most on the before-they-were-stars set of "<a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086066/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Outsiders,</a>" and why everyone who made "The Karate Kid" thought the title was awful.Jason Guerrasio: For years people pitched you how to continue "The Karate Kid" franchise, why did you say yes to "Cobra Kai"?Ralph Macchio: Well, the credit goes to Jon, Josh, and Hayden, the creators. These guys really had a very well thought out pitch by coming in through the eyes of Johnny Lawrence - basically turning the prism view in the universe.And they had such passion. It was an instinct that they wanted to make a show the fans wanted to see. I have said "no" for 30 years. I was definitely the last guy to come to the party. I was the piece, arguably, that they had to get.&#xa0;Guerrasio: Don't be humble.&#xa0;Macchio: [Laughs.] But it was a combination of their passion, the belief that they wanted to pay respects and homage to the franchise, and they never wanted to trivialize it. They listened to the importance of the Miyagi element of the show and LaRusso's life and how that needed to be there for me to even begin to have a conversation about it.Also the timing. Only now do we have these platforms where you can take a five-hour movie and cut it up into half-hour parts. Because that's what we did. We're making these five-hour movies, that's how we approach it. I don't think "The Karate Kid" would have been made as a movie today, I think it would have been a series on one of these platforms.&#xa0;&#xa0;Guerrasio: So out of all the pitches you've gotten over the years, which was the worst one?Macchio: It's my favorite. Everyone would come up with the pitch of, "You have a kid and you become the Miyagi to your kid." Everyone thought that was the brilliant continuation. But an executive once came up to me and John Avildsen, the director of "Karate Kid," and took it a step further. It was very off the cuff but he said, "Hey, what if Rocky Balboa and LaRusso had kids and they are related in some way?" Because Avildsen directed "Rocky," so that's the connection. This guy wanted to combine "Rocky" and "Karate Kid" in some way. Taking these two major hits this guy thought it would be a huge movie. So the concept was to go back to the Balboa and LaRusso lineage in Italy and find that we were somehow related and that our kids would now team up in some way.&#xa0;Guerrasio: Oh my god.Macchio: It was never pitched fully, but just the concept of someone coming up with that, it was crazy.&#xa0;Guerrasio: Did you even entertain the idea?Macchio: No. Me and Avildsen just looked at each other and went to the guy, "Well, you get back to us." But inside you're like, "How is this even possible?"&#xa0;Guerrasio: You've lived in the fandom of "The Karate Kid" almost your whole life, but was it even a shock for you when YouTube told you that over 50 million people had seen the first episode of season one?Macchio: Um, I'll say this much, it wasn't out of the realm of possibility. Did it exceed expectations? Absolutely. Listen, I've walked in these shoes for 35 years, everywhere I go there's a great love for that movie and the franchise. Daniel LaRusso was that kind of character that represented the everykid. He had no business winning anything so we all felt we could be him. So I knew there was love for the movie and then the pop culture element of it elevated it - "Sweep the leg." "Put him in a body bag." But the question was would they come to the party? Would they come to the well and drink the water? And they didn't just drink the water, they came back with buckets and buckets. That's what was beyond expectations.&#xa0;<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Guerrasio: What's been interesting to watch with the LaRusso character, and it's delved more in the second season, is the motives for Daniel. Does he want to be the Miyagi to a younger generation or is this just a guy going through a midlife crisis? Have layers like that been fun to explore?Macchio: That's part of what we discussed going into season 2 and hopefully many seasons to come. We want to keep this ball in the air and have the characters evolve as opposed to a quick one-off. It was important to have LaRusso be a little off balance and have to fill that void in his life. But in doing that you tap into what was important to him in his adolescence. He doesn't have his father, and his father figure is dead, so what seems simple is not so easy. He has the knowledge, but can he teach it? At some point years ago, you had to have pushed LaRusso aside and been ready to move on. Is it wild that it's back in your life?Macchio: It's insane. [Laughs.] If you asked me 10 years ago, I would say "no way." And it's not that I buried the character, I live with him all the time. But the concept of going back, I was always "no, no, no." Why touch that again? It has such a blessed light on it. Everything happened right. Pat Morita's performance is treasured. Why would you go back and do that when everyone is trying to do that? And for the most part failing. Like when they remade the movie, I told them, "Go make your movie, I'm not going to be involved." I let that be its own thing.Guerrasio: So you were asked to be in the 2010 Jackie Chan/Jaden Smith version of "The Karate Kid"?Macchio: They wanted me to do a cameo or something in it and I passed on that.Guerrasio: But then you get work like HBO's "The Deuce," where you are a scene stealer and nothing like Daniel LaRusso. With something like that you must have felt, "Okay, I've moved on to the next chapter in my career." Because I would suspect for years you probably didn't get cast in stuff because directors could only see LaRusso when you walked in the door.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Macchio: Here's how I feel about that: yes, there is that part of it. And I'm sure there are people in the industry that see "Cobra Kai" and go, "Okay, he's doing that part that he does." But I would say it's the same character but a different person. You see him failing in lessons he should have learned by now. He's struggling as an adult. This is really the fan's show. There's so much joy and positive response from the world with this that to hold back and say, "I will only do other things, don't think of me as that anymore," that wouldn't have been right. It's become bigger than all of us. And with "The Deuce," I'm happy because my character gets to grow a little in season 3.Guerrasio: The crazy thing about your career is before "The Karate Kid" you already had a memorable role, playing Johnny in "The Outsiders."Macchio: I love that movie.Guerrasio: The movie didn't just launch your career but is directed by Francis Ford Coppola with a cast that includes Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Tom Cruise, C. Thomas Howell, Rob Lowe, and Diane Lane before they all got hugely famous. It's one of the best young casts ever. What was that like to experience?Macchio: That was the dream-come-true role. I read that book when I was 12 and it was the first book I finished all by myself. It wasn't my parents forcing me to read it. This one was just a page turner. And with the Johnny character, I could relate. I was the runt of the litter, I played sports but I was never the guy you picked first, so I connected with him. So I went in, I wanted that role more than anything and I had to go through a few rounds to get it. But it's still one of my treasured roles. It's the one I will never forget. I still have 13- and 14-year-old kids coming up to me and asking me to sign the book.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Guerrasio: Who did you connect with the most on set out of that cast?Macchio: Early on I did a lot of stuff with C. Thomas Howell. Emilio. Me and Matt Dillon really connected because we are two New Yorkers. We all stayed in contact. Rob Lowe, I did his roast a year ago and had fun ripping him apart. But everyone wanted to be close to Diane Lane because she was amazing.&#xa0;Guerrasio: Did you audition for "Karate Kid" while filming "The Outsiders" or was it after?Macchio: Yeah, "The Outsiders" was in theaters and "The Karate Kid" audition came right after that.&#xa0;Guerrasio: So you must have felt really good.Macchio: Yeah, I mean, I didn't know what "The Karate Kid" would be.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Guerrasio: But just being the lead in a movie.&#xa0;Macchio: Yeah, that's true. And my first reading with John Avildsen, I read it cold for the first time and he turns off the camera and said, "I can't guarantee anything but I would start taking some karate lessons." And I was like, "Wow." I'm skipping down the streets of New York. But I just kept thinking the title is so lame and if it worked I would have to carry it for the rest of my life. [Laughs.]&#xa0;Guerrasio: Crazy how things work out, huh?Macchio: Yeah. And it wasn't just me, a lot of people on set didn't think the title was good. 'The Karate Kid' star Ralph Macchio explains why he agreed to reprise his iconic role in the YouTube hit 'Cobra Kai' after 30 years of saying 'no' to reboots and sequels

"But it was just really surprising to me that — what was supposed to be a kind of freebie in terms of assignments — even that they felt compelled to generate with an LLM."When Fritts, an assistant professor of philosophy at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, took her concern to X, formerly Twitter, in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/freganmitts/status/1828796730634330593">a tweet</a> that has now garnered 3.5 million views, some replies argued that students would obviously combat "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/BonaventureTurd/status/1828810310532415626">busywork</a>" assignments with similarly low-effort AI-generated answers.However, Fritts said that the assignment was not only to help students get acquainted with using the online <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/what-is-blackboard">Blackboard</a> discussion board feature, but she was also "genuinely curious" about the introductory question."A lot of students who take philosophy classes, especially if they're not majors, don't really know what philosophy is," she said. "So I like to get an idea of what their expectations are so I can know how to respond to them."The AI-written responses, however, did not reflect what the students, as individuals, were expecting from the course but rather a regurgitated description of what a technology ethics class is, which clued Fritts in that they were generated by ChatGPT or a similar chatbot."When you're a professor, and you've read dozens and dozens of AI essays, you can just tell," she said.<h2 id="e0b552b0-5f55-4bcf-938f-9995306aaa90">The calculator argument — why ChatGPT is not just another problem-solving tool</h2>While a common defense permeating Fritts' replies likened ChatGPT for writing to a calculator for math problems, she said that viewing LLMs as just another problem-solving tool is a "mistaken" comparison, especially in the context of humanities.Calculators reduce the time needed to solve mechanical operations that students are already taught to produce a singular correct solution. But Fritts said that the aim of humanities education is not to create a product but to "shape people" by "giving them the ability to think about things that they wouldn't naturally be prompted to think about.""The goal is to create liberated minds — liberated people — and offloading the thinking onto a machine, by definition, doesn't achieve that," she said.<h2 id="81ba0d50-1afb-4f61-914a-96c48c6a1f92">Lasting impacts on students</h2>Beyond cheating on papers, Fritts said that students have, in general, become compromised in their thinking ability — and they've noticed."They're like, 'When I was young, I used to love to read, and now I can't. I can't even get through the chapter of a book,'" she said. "'My attention span is so bad, and I know it's from looking at my phone, always having YouTube or TikTok on.' And they're sad about it."Fritts said that technology addiction has affected students' general agency when interacting with information. So I experimented and found a few strategies that worked well for me, and it was something that other people commented that they were interested in when I talked about it on my YouTube channel, so I wrote a book about it.In terms of planning your e-book, this doesn't need to be overly complicated, either. Honestly, e-books are just like glorified blog posts.Come up with a working title, then the outline for your book as though it were a blog post. Then, for each main point in your outline, break that section down and make subheadings for it. If you want, you caan even make subheadings for your subheadings. When you're done, you'll have an outline of your book, with each main heading being a chapter and the subheadings being the content for each chapter.<h2 id="6d01">Step 2: Draft your book</h2>This is the part that tends to intimidate people, and I get it. If you struggle with writing long-form content, I highly recommend investing in a Jasper AI Teams account to help you out. Jasper is an AI writer that can help you make short work of your writing projects by helping you write the first draft.It's a powerful tool, but learning how to use it correctly is important because it's a bit more complicated than slapping the "compose" button and letting Jasper do the rest. However, you can find a free "Jasper Jumpstart" training on their website that will show you how to use the tool.Whether you use Jasper or not, the goal is to just plow through that first draft and get all your thoughts and ideas onto the page.Don't worry if it's messy or doesn't flow well; the goal right now is to finish a rough draft.<h2 id="138f">Step 3: Edit your e-book</h2>When I edit my content, I have three phases:1. The hard editHere, I go through one line at a time and rephrase things, fix grammatical mistakes, and change things that don't flow well. I'll add sections and move things around.This is a crucial step, especially if you used Jasper to write your rough draft. Because Jasper can get a little creative with his "facts," you need to ensure everything he's written is correct. You'll also want to rewrite passages to sound the way you would say them.2. Grammarly ProYes, Grammarly has a free extension which is better than nothing, but I can't tell you how much of a difference it makes when you use the Pro version.Not only does it help you catch spelling and grammar mistakes, but it also helps you make your writing more concise and clear, which is crucial for informational content like this.However, I don't take all of its suggestions. For example, I don't care if I write in passive voice, and its suggestions to change words for more variety don't always make sense. But I consider each suggestion and decide for myself if I should change it.This is also the phase when I run it through the plagiarism checker. And this is an important step regardless of whether you used Jasper or wrote it yourself because there's so much content online that you want to make sure you didn't accidentally copy anything.Grammarly Pro has a great plagiarism checker, but it's a bit sensitive in that it flags sentence fragments and commonly used phrases as plagiarism.Again, use your judgment here; if it's full sentences that are getting flagged, then you'll definitely want to change them. But three or four words taken entirely out of context don't really count as plagiarism.3. Final read-throughI wouldn't do the read-through on the same day as your big edit. Take a day and return with a fresh mind, making you more likely to catch errors.For this step, you can either read it out loud to yourself or can use a tool like Speechify to read it back to you. I prefer Speechify because it catches things that I miss. For example, it will pronounce something funny if it's spelled wrong.Speechify has a paid version where the voices sound human and natural, but the free version does the trick too.<h2 id="e033">Step 4: Create your e-book cover</h2>They say to never judge a book by its cover, but sadly, people do. So you'll want your cover to be professional and stand out.You can hire an illustrator if you really want, but it's unnecessary. If you have a creative side, you can make it yourself using a tool like Canva.Canva has a ton of free book cover templates that you can use as a springboard for your own design. It's an intuitive tool and is as easy as dragging and dropping elements and text where you want them to go on the page.If you want to go a step further and create something totally original, you can use Jasper Art to create graphics for your book. (Jasper Art is included with every Jasper subscription.)For example, I generated an image of a woman sitting at a laptop wearing sunglasses in "pop art" style. Then I uploaded my Jasper image to Canva and incorporated it into my book cover.If you don't have an eye for graphic design or the thought of making your own cover makes you want to scrap the whole project, don't worry. You can skip this part altogether and go with a really simple cover, either by minimally tweaking one of Canva's templates or using a default cover in the next step.<h2 id="fe52">Step 5: Create a visually appealing e-book</h2>Technically, you can paste your document into Google Docs and just save it as a PDF.But that isn't very visually appealing or professional-looking. To create your e-book, I would recommend one of two options:<ol><li>Canva: The first option is to create your e-book within Canva. They have a document editor, which makes it a lot easier to create e-books than in the past. However, there is still a lot of work you'll need to do to get the e-book ready. For instance, you'll need to manually add in your table of contents, page numbers, and any other visual elements. You also have limited ways to export your e-book. You can export it as a PDF, which is fine for selling the e-book on your site, but there are no options for Kindle format or flipbooks.</li><li id="c7c5">Designrr: My preferred tool for creating e-books is Designrr, which allows you to import your article from Google Docs and formats it for you automatically. You can choose from a wide selection of free design templates, which include professional-looking book covers. Once you import your e-book, you can further customize the e-book to match your brand colors or add additional graphics. You'll likely still need to do a little additional formatting, but it's much faster than Canva. The pro account also allows you to export your story in Kindle format, should you ever wish you publish your e-book on Amazon. For now, once you're happy with your e-book, click on publish, select pdf, and you've got your finished product!</li></ol><h2 id="ce9b">Step 6: Sell your book using PayHip</h2>There are lots of ways to sell your e-book, but one of the fastest, simplest, and cheapest ways to do so is to set up a shop on PayHip.PayHip is a platform that allows you to sell digital products, courses, online coaching, and memberships. It's really easy to use, and you don't pay anything until you make a sale.One of the reasons I like PayHip over other platforms is that they handle the value-added tax, or VAT, which is a European sales tax that you need to remit when you sell your products to people who live in the countries that collect that tax.It can be a real pain in the butt to manage on your own, but it's one less thing to worry about if you host your products through PayHIp.All you need to do is connect it to your PayPal or Stripe account and then upload your products via the products page.You can price your book for however much you want, keeping in mind that PayHip takes a small cut of each sale.You can also upload a mockup of your e-book (which you can easily create with Canva) and add a brief product description.Once you add the product, you'll get a link to your product page to share with your audience.  <div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AC979Ja4R5A">YouTube</a></div></div>After founding a multi-billion dollar apparel brand with hoards of devoted fans, <keyword id="1639331" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Lululemon">Lululemon</keyword> founder Chip Wilson has taken a step back, first leaving his post as CEO in 2005 and then stepping down as chief innovation and branding officer in 2012. 
Though he remains the company's chairman, he's also moved on to new things, like <a href="http://whil.com/how-to-whil/">whil, the meditation startup</a> he launched with his wife Shannon, Lululemon's former chief designer.
In a recent interview with Business Insider, Wilson shared the best advice he ever got.
"It took me a long time to understand it, but [the advice was] to ask for help and that I don't know it all," said Wilson. "People love to help. I don't have to be insecure and know it all."
The tendency to never admit fault and trying to do everything has deep roots.
"When I was around 12, my parents were in the middle of a divorce and money was tight. I mean, really tight. At one point there was literally no food in the house," <a href="http://40000days.whil.com/chapter-six/">Wilson writes</a> in his ongoing autobiography, "<a href="http://40000days.whil.com/">40,000 Days and Then You're Dead,"</a> which he is releasing in chapters online. "I decided to forge my mom's signature on one of her checks, take myself to the store, and buy some food to make lunch. In that moment I said to myself: 'If I'm going to survive, I have to do it myself and can't rely on anyone else, especially my parents.' "
Wilson was insulated from others even earlier, he writes, when he skipped a grade early in his education, was the youngest kid around, and was constantly ostracized. 
That independent mindset became his "winning formula" and later manifested in his first business, Westbeach.
"I was reticent to rely on anyone else around me and balked at the thought of asking for help, counsel, or assistance," <a href="http://40000days.whil.com/chapter-six/">Wilson writes</a>. "When you're in a business partnership with two other guys, this modus operandi is going to create serious problems. In fact, my inability to cede control over certain aspects of the business was one of the factors putting Westbeach's very existence in jeopardy."
He finally identified the issue at Landmark Forum, a weekend workshop that Wilson learned about through one of his partners in 1991. The concepts weren't new, but they were driven home in a way that made him finally change. 
It had a "monumental" impact on the way he ran his business and life. The core lesson was that our lives are defined by our past, by behaviors that we learned early, which makes it difficult to change and be in the present. 
"Human beings constantly construct stories in an effort to make sense of our world. We interpret other people's actions and behaviors through stories but are incapable of recognizing that these stories are inherently fictional," Wilson writes. "What are only our best guesses about our surroundings become, in our minds, facts. We base the course of our lives on these guesses, all the while believing that they are the truth. Over the years, as these stories accumulate, they constrain us more and more."
Confronting that issue through the forum helped Wilson realize that he could be different, and he could pick another, more productive worldview.
Without the forum, Lululemon might not have existed. Wilson had already sold Westbeach to others and left, but the struggling company wanted to hire him back at a generous salary. That money was essential in keeping Lululemon afloat in its early days.
"One testament to how far I'd come was leaving Shannon, Jackie, and Dave in charge of the company I created when I went off to work for Westbeach," Wilson writes. "Though it was still a challenge, I'd never have been able to do that if I hadn't taken the Landmark course. Consequently the fledgling Lululemon would have barely made it into the 21st century before going belly-up."
It's incredibly difficult for business owners, used to having to do everything themselves, to cede control and learn to ask for help from friends and mentors. But that very lesson underscored Wilson's extreme success.
