MPs and MLAs taking bribes to vote or make a speech in the <keyword id="19910021" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="house" source="keywords">House</keyword> are not immune from prosecution, the Supreme Court said on Monday in a landmark, unanimous verdict that overrules its 1998 judgment protecting such lawmakers. Observing that bribery is not protected by parliamentary privileges, a seven-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice D Y <keyword id="19985698" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chandrachud" source="keywords">Chandrachud</keyword> held that a five-judge bench's interpretation in the 1998 verdict in the JMM bribery case was contrary to Articles 105 and 194 of the Constitution. Describing the judgment as "great", Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword> said in a post on X that it would "ensure clean politics and deepen people's faith in the system". Articles 105 and 194 deal with the powers and privileges of MPs and MLAs in the Parliament and the legislative assemblies. "Corruption and bribery by members of the legislatures erode probity in public life," the CJI, who read the operative part of the verdict, said while pronouncing the verdict today. The bench also comprised Justices A S Bopanna, M M Sundresh, P S Narasimha, J B Pardiwala, <keyword id="19931190" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sanjay-kumar" source="keywords">Sanjay Kumar</keyword> and Manoj Misra. In 1998, the five-judge constitution bench held in its majority verdict on the Narasimha Rao versus CBI case that parliamentarians have immunity against criminal prosecution for any speech made and vote cast inside the House under Articles 105(2) and 194(2). The seven-judge bench was reconsidering the 1998 judgement. While pronouncing the verdict, the CJI said Article 105 of the Constitution seeks to sustain an environment to have deliberations by the lawmakers in the House and this atmosphere is vitiated when a member is bribed to deliver a speech. Justice Chandrachud said the privileges claimed must have a nexus to the collective functioning of the House and must have a relationship with the essential functions of a legislator which he or she has to discharge. The seven-judge bench had reserved its judgement in the matter on October 5 last year. During the arguments, the Centre had submitted that bribery can never be a subject matter of immunity and a parliamentary privilege is not meant to place a lawmaker above law. The top court, in the course of the hearing, had said it will examine whether the immunity granted to lawmakers from prosecution for taking bribes to make a speech or vote in Parliament and state legislatures extends to them even if criminality is attached to their actions. On September 20, 2023, the <keyword id="19936355" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="apex-court" source="keywords">apex court</keyword> had agreed to reconsider its 1998 judgement, saying it was an important issue having a significant bearing on "morality of polity". The issue came under the apex court's lens in 2019, when a bench headed by then Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi was hearing an appeal filed by <keyword id="20405400" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sita-soren" source="keywords">Sita Soren</keyword>, JMM MLA from Jama and daughter-in-law of party chief Shibu <keyword id="19968807" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="soren" source="keywords">Soren</keyword>. She was an accused in the JMM bribery scandal. The Gogoi-led bench had referred to a five-judge bench the matter, noting it had "wide ramification" and was of "substantial public importance". Sita Soren was accused of taking bribes to vote for a particular candidate in the Rajya Sabha election in 2012. She contended that the constitutional provision granting lawmakers immunity from prosecution, which saw her father-in-law being let off the hook in the JMM bribery scandal, be applied to her. She moved the apex court against the Jharkhand High Court order of February 17, 2014 refusing to quash the criminal case lodged against her. The three-judge bench had then said it will revisit the apex court verdict in the JMM bribery case involving Shibu Soren, a former Jharkhand chief minister and ex-union minister, and four other party MPs who had accepted bribes to vote against the no-confidence motion threatening the survival of the P V Narasimha Rao government in 1993. The Narasimha Rao government, which was in a minority, survived the no-confidence vote with their support. The CBI registered a case against Soren and four other JMM Lok Sabha MPs but the Supreme Court quashed it citing immunity from prosecution they enjoyed under Article 105(2) of the Constitution. No immunity for MPs, MLAs taking bribe to vote, make speech in House: SC

Kathmandu, Cinema halls across Kathmandu on Friday stopped the screening of '<keyword id="9776044" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="adipurush" source="Orion">Adipurush</keyword>', a day after Mayor Balen Shah warned that no Indian movie will be allowed in the Nepal capital if the film based on the Hindu epic <keyword id="6363500" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ramayana" source="Orion">Ramayana</keyword> does not correct the "mistake" about the birthplace of Sita. The <keyword id="17720608" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nepal-film-union" source="Orion">Nepal Film Union</keyword> has urged all the cinema halls in Kathmandu to stop showing 'Adipurush' and urged theatres outside the capital to release it only after assessing the security situation. In a tweet on Thursday, the Mayor said that in 'Adipurush', it is mentioned that "Sita is the daughter of India". He added that until this mistake will not be corrected in India and Nepal, no Indian movie will be allowed to be shown within the Kathmandu metropolitan city limit. The film is written and directed by <keyword id="2236748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="om-raut" source="Orion">Om Raut</keyword> and produced by T-Series and Retrophiles. Shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu languages, the film has courted controversy in India as well. In a statement, Nepal's QFX Cinemas said: "Keeping the security of our viewers, QFX is not going to show 'Adipurush'... We are waiting for the government's decision. As soon as this issue is resolved, we will issue another notice and apologise for the inconvenience to our viewers." Nepal's Censor Board also decided to hold back permission to the upcoming Indian epic mythological film, based on the Hindu epic "Ramayana", for the same reason. Sita was born in Nepal's Janakpur and Lord Rama came and married her, as per the Ramayana. Besides Mayor Balen Shah, some sister organisations of various political parties have also protested against the film and warned that they will not allow the screening until the filmmakers correct the mistakes regarding the birthplace of Sita. This is not the first time that Mayor Shah ratcheted up the nationalist planks. Mayor Shah on June 8 placed the map of Greater Nepal in his chamber to counter the Indian "Akhand Bharat" map placed in the new Parliament building. With Ramanand Sagar's popular eighties mythological serial "Ramayan" back on <keyword id="6408304" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="doordarshan">Doordarshan</keyword>, the Indian audience has got a chance to revisit the epic story all over again. The show has set off social media discussion, too. The discussion over the past 24 hours or so has taken a gender-based turn with some viewers calling queen <keyword id="659626" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kaikeyi">Kaikeyi</keyword> a b**ch and hurling abuses at her maid <keyword id="261938" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Manthara">Manthara</keyword>. As the badmouthing continued, these two characters incidentally kept trending on Twitter. There has been a debate centred on the feminism quotient in the show, too. While some users felt "Ramayan" did not mete out fair treatment to its female characters, others felt the storyline champions women's empowerment. Hailing the storyline as an instance of women's empowerment, a viewer tweeted: "We were so progressive even 7000 yrs back, its amazing. <keyword id="6427654" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="sita">Sita</keyword> was very intelligent &amp; warrior woman. However, not everyone feels that the story upholds "women's empowerment", and not everyone shared kind words for the antagonist Kaikeyi. A viewer opined: "Kaikeyi was a class A b**ch, wasn't she? Asking for her son to be crowned king was alright, but sending Ram to exile was evil at a whole new level. "Kaikeyi was the first pseudo feminist. #Ramayan," opined the viewer. "Kaikeyi is a good example that a woman can ruin man's life even without Pseudo feminism. #Ramayana #Ayodhyakaand," said the viewer. A social media user made an interesting observation saying "Ramayan" would have had a different perspective altogether if it was penned from the viewpoint of any of the female characters. The tweet reads: "Have you ever not wondered how the story would have unfolded in its own different indifferent manner if the pen was given to Kaikeyi or Manthara, to Urmila or Kaushalya, to Surpnakha or Mandodari?" It has just been a few days since Doordarshan started airing "Ramayan", and one thing is clear: more than three decades later, the show has lost none of its power to remain a talking point, any which way. Indian social media finds a new Komolika in Kaikeyi as Ramayan fever catches on

Flexible and affordable. These two words will more than any other impact how we deliver connectivity to the air transport industry in the next few years and beyond. 
 
Increasingly, legacy network systems are just not up to the job. Bandwidth-hungry applications running on a growing array of devices are pushing traditional networks to their limits. At peak times, performance and response times over the network can drop off dramatically, leaving end-users frustrated and applications dependent on high-speed algorithms compromised. 
 
What is needed the flexibility to cope with very agile connectivity requirements? Instead of fighting for a share of the fixed amount of bandwidth, what if each application could request only the bandwidth required and when it is required to maintain a pre-defined level of performance? In essence, each application would have bandwidth-on-demand. 
 
URGENCY 
We strongly believe that in future networks services will be defined by performance, not by bandwidth. This is the premise behind a concept called Software Defined Networking, or SDN as it’s better known in technology circles. It’s been talked about for a few years but is now taking on greater urgency as the digital world creates an increasingly large amount of data. 
 
Within data centres, this problem has been solved by virtualizing the server environment, which allows IT resources to be dynamically provisioned when needed. 
 
However, while virtualization has made dynamic storage and processing of big data possible, the transportation of data to and from end-user applications remains constrained by the limitations of the network. 
 
To solve this, SDN seeks to apply the same virtualization approach within the network. Instead of the command functions that control the movement of traffic being hard-coded into the underlying network hardware, they’re separated into a ‘logical software layer’, so that they can be independently managed through an SDN controller. 
 
It means the logical overlay can be configured without impacting the underlying physical network, providing full programmability of the entire network from a single location. 
 
Out goes the time-consuming need to manually change the fixed hardware, such as routers, and appliances every time a reconfiguration or modification of the network is needed. 
 
While the market is still in its embryonic state, businesses need to understand the benefits the radical shift in network technology will bring. SDN is going to have a big impact on network design in the future. It enables network automation, which makes it more dynamic and easier to manage large amounts of data, Capacity-constrained static networks with fixed bandwidth per site will in future no longer be viable in the digital world. SDN provides a simple way to control the network so it can function more like virtualized data centres. 
 
SDN has the potential to make significant improvements to service request response times, security, and reliability. It could also reduce costs by automating many processes that are currently done manually. The future network is about flexibility.

As the connected world of travel becomes a reality 91% of <keyword id="44023" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="airlines">airlines</keyword> plan to invest in <keyword id="137092" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="cyber-security">cyber security</keyword> programs over the next three years, according to the <a href="https://www.sita.aero/resources/type/surveys-reports/airline-it-trends-survey-2016" target="_blank">SITA Airline IT Trends 2016 Survey</a>.

	The level of commitment to cyber security reflects the consensus that a lot is being done in this area but there is always more to do.
 <keyword id="6427654" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sita">SITA</keyword>, the travel technology provider to the air transport industry, carried out its survey among the world’s top 200 airlines, and discovered that cyber security at airlines is progressing. Three years ago less than half of airlines (47%) said they were making advanced preparations to manage cyber risks – today this has doubled to 91%.
 The focus on cyber security also reflects the move to the ‘Internet of Things’ (<keyword id="1967280" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IoT">IoT</keyword>) in which a vast number of physical objects will become connected to the internet. This enables tracking, data collection, analysis and control, which necessitates more security. An overwhelming majority of airlines (68%) are investing in IoT programs in the next three years, up from 57% this time last year.

	A key area of IoT investment is in connected aircraft which 46% of airlines believe will give a better passenger experience. Today 37% of airlines operate connected aircraft and this will jump to two thirds by 2019. Currently ‘internet via passenger devices’ is the service offered by most (33%). Over the next three years big increases in services are expected with more than half of airlines planning to provide destination services and duty-free shopping apps, while 70% plan to provide multi-media file streaming on passenger devices.

	“Airlines are investing in areas which will promote a connected world of travel for the benefit of passengers and the workforce. We see new priorities attracting more investment, with cyber security and electronic flight bag solutions coming to the fore in this year’s research. The initiatives to realize the ‘Internet of Things’ include smart bag tagging to enable continuous tracking, which is planned by 61% of airlines by 2019. Nearly half (47%) of airlines are also planning IT programs for single token travel for passenger identification,” said Nigel Pickford, Director Market Insight, SITA.

	Providing passenger services via smartphones continues to be a key area of investment for airlines; 79% are planning major investment over the next three years while a further 17% are planning a pilot program or R&amp;D in this area. Services to passengers on tablets will also see significant investment with 71% of airlines planning major programs for these devices (up from 63% in 2015). Airlines are using social media activity and physical location to tailor personalized offers to passengers; in fact three quarters plan to do this by 2019.

91% airlines investing in cyber security

Technology has certainly made lives easier, and while this fact holds true for almost all facets of life, travel and especially air travel is a sector that has benefitted a lot from the use of technology, helping both users and providers. 
 
A survey in fact says more and more air passengers in India are now choosing technology over human interaction, so that they have more choice and control in how they manage their trip. 
 
The survey, conducted by SITA, the communications and IT solution provider, also revealed that such online bookings, using a mobile or with an agent, resulted in 93% passengers having a positive experience. 
 
Here are the reports’ findings in a nutshell: 
 
· 92% Passengers said that they would like to book their flight using self-service technology instead of relying on agents. 
 
· 57% of the passengers use self-service technology, like mobiles, to check-in; out of these, 92% find it easier as compared to manual check-ins. 
 
· More than half of the passengers also said that using technology for payment feels more secure. 
 
· 54% of the passengers who have had a negative experience will try a different self-service technology the next time. 
 · While on the airport, 40% of the passengers pass their time by <keyword id="3415544" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="online-airport-shopping">online airport shopping</keyword>. 
 
· Passengers also said that they want more mobile services and baggage notifications to be treated as top priorities, the latter being recommended by 76% passengers. 
 
· 65% Passengers said that they access entertainment services from their own devices, and 46% said that they watch movies on their devices while travelling. 
 
· 56% Passengers who use self-service baggage bag-drop plan said that they would like to use it again. 
 
· Also, 88% of the passengers said that a waiting time of 10 minutes or less while collecting their baggage would make them happier.

The main entrance to the Mandir is situated on the eastern side, which can be approached by ascending 32 stairs through the Singh Dwar. There are a total of five Mandaps (Halls) in the Mandir - Nritya Mandap, Rang Mandap, Sabha Mandap, Prathana Mandap and Kirtan Mandap. Near the Mandir is a historic Well (Sita koop), dating back to the ancient era. In the southwestern part of the Mandir complex, at Kuber Tila, the ancient Mandir of Bhagwan Shiv has been restored, along with the installation of a statue of Jatayu. The foundation of the Mandir has been constructed with a 14-meter- thick layer of roller-compacted concrete (RCC), giving it the appearance of artificial rock. No iron is used anywhere in the Mandir. For protection against ground moisture, a 21-foot-high plinth has been constructed using granite. The Mandir complex has a sewage treatment plant, water treatment plant, water supply for fire safety and an independent power station. The Mandir has been constructed employing the country's traditional and indigenous technology.
