Amid massive surge in the prices of various vegetables and fruits in <keyword id="6580" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="lahore" source="Orion">Lahore</keyword> and other parts of <keyword id="6354953" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="punjab" source="Orion">Punjab</keyword> province due to devastating floods, the Pakistan government may import tomato and onion from <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, according to the market dealers here. "On Sunday, per kilogram of tomato and onion were available in Lahore's markets at around Rs500 and Rs400 respectively. However, in Sunday markets both commodities were available at Rs 100 per kg less than that of those available in regular markets," Jawaad Rizvi, a wholesale dealer of Lahore market, told PTI. He said that in the coming days the prices of commodities will increase further as the supply of vegetables from <keyword id="45793" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="balochistan" source="Orion">Balochistan</keyword>, <keyword id="12961" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sindh" source="Orion">Sindh</keyword> and south Punjab has badly been affected because of floods. "In the coming days, onion and tomato per kg prices may cross Rs700. Similarly, potato price has increased from Rs40 per kg to Rs120kg," Rizvi said. In the markets, the short supply of vegetables is because of destruction of the crops on thousands of acres by the floods in Balochistan and Sindh. It is learnt the federal government is considering the option to import onion and tomato from India through Wagah border. Currently, Lahore and other cities of Punjab are getting the supply of tomato and onion from Afghanistan via the Torkham border. "One hundred containers of tomato and around 30 of onion are being received at Torkham border daily, out of which two containers of tomato and one of onion is being brought to Lahore city on a daily basis and the number of containers is absolutely too short to meet the demand in the provincial capital of Punjab, according to <keyword id="14835633" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="lahore-market-committee" source="Orion">Lahore Market Committee</keyword> Secretary Shehzad Cheema. He said vegetables like capsicum or bell pepper are also short in the market due to the floods. Cheema said the government would eventually import onion and tomato from India. He said import of vegetables from Iran via Taftan border (Balochistan) was not viable as the Iranian government had increased taxes on its imports and exports. He said the prices of date palm and banana would also go up in the coming days as most of the orchards in Sindh had been destroyed by the floods. Apple supply from Balochistan or other areas had also been stopped due to flooding. According to officials, floods have claimed over 1,030 lives so far, with 74 deaths reported in Sindh, 31 in Khyber Pakhtaunkhawa, six in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), four in Balochistan and one in Punjab. Pak may import tomato and onion from India amid huge surge in vegetable prices due to floods

In a statement issued by WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the global health watchdog said water supply was disrupted in flood-hit areas of Pakistan, forcing people to drink unsafe water which could cause cholera and other diseases. The WHO has cautioned people across flood-hit areas of Pakistan, precisely the worst affected <keyword id="12961" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sindh" source="Orion">Sindh</keyword> province to be extra careful. Tedros on Saturday highlighted that stagnant water serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes and spreads vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue and urged donors to continue to respond generously to save lives and prevent more suffering . Separately, the WHO Director general tweeted that he was deeply concerned about the potential for a 2nd disaster in Pakistan, spreading disease and threatening lives following the flooding and asked for quick support to tackle the issue. Situation in Pakistan continues to be grim as the devastating floods have caused havoc in the country, precisely Balochistan and Sindh provinces. At least 1,545 people have been killed due to the floods across Pakistan and an estimated 16 million children impacted. The WHO has immediately released USD 10 million from the WHO Contingency Fund for Emergencies which enabled the global health body to deliver essential medicines and other supplies to the country. The Fund last month restored a stalled economic assistance package and also provided USD 1.1 billion to the country. The IMF's resident representative in the country, Esther Perez Ruiz, said in a statement that the IMF was deeply saddened by the devastating impact of the recent floods in Pakistan and extended its sympathies to the millions of flood victims. We will work with others in the international community to support, under the current programme, the authorities' relief and reconstruction efforts, and especially their ongoing endeavour to assist those affected by the floods while ensuring sustainable policies and macroeconomic stability, the statement said. However, it is not clear how IMF would provide support under the existing Extended Fund Facility (EFF) arrangement, which was signed in July 2019 to provide USD 6 billion to Pakistan during a 39-month period. But the IMF board had approved an extension of the program until end-June 2023 and also enhanced it to about USD 6.5 billion. The Sindh health department, meanwhile, said a total of 2.5 million patients had been treated at different medical camps across the province from July 1 to date, the Dawn newspaper reported. As many as 594,241 patients were treated for skin-related diseases, followed by diarrhea (534,800), malaria (10,702), dengue (1,401), and other diseases (120,745,1), stated a report by the Sindh Directorate General Health Services. The report also showed that 90,398 patients were treated during the last 24 hours, of which 17,919 had diarrhea, 19,746 had skin-related diseases, 695 had malaria and 388 had dengue. Around 92,797 people were treated in the province on September 15, the paper reported. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the health department said that its officials are already struggling to stem the spread of dengue hemorrhagic fever in flood-hit districts of the province, The Express Tribune newspaper reported. Sindh health officials have said that 97 people have been confirmed dead, while two survived the crash on Friday that took place in the densely populated Model Colony near the Jinnah International Airport, reports Dawn news. According to PIA spokesperson Abdullah Hafeez, the A320 Airbus was carrying 91 passengers and eight crew members from Lahore to Karachi. Eyewitnesses said the flight PK 8303 appeared to attempt to land two or three times before crashing. Meeran Yousuf, the media coordinator for the Sindh Health Minister, told Dawn news that two passengers had survived and were brought to hospitals. She identified the survivors as Zubair and Zafar Masood, who is the President of Bank of Punjab. "Zubair has 35 per cent burns and is being treated at the (Dr Ruth Pfau) Civil Hospital Karachi, while Masood has four fractures and is being treated at the Darul Sehat Hospital," said Yousuf, adding that both were in stable condition. Moreover, she said that 19 victims had been identified so far. A third person, who had earlier been identified as a survivor from the plane, was later confirmed to be a resident of the area where the plane crashed. She was among the 11 persons who were injured on the ground. Meanwhile, PIA's Chief Executive Officer Air Marshal Arshad Malik has ruled any possibility that the plane had any technical or any other issue. "All standard operating procedures were followed before the plane's takeoff," The Express Tribune quoted him as saying in a news conference on Friday night. He said the inquiry will be held to ascertain the cause of crash. But <keyword id="3001" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword> Airlines Pilots' Association spokesperson Tariq Yahya, while speaking on Geo News, said that the plane seemed to be gliding at the end. "Communications show that the plane did not have power at the end and was gliding and couldn't make it to the runway," said Yahya, adding that it didn't have power when it was asked to climb to 3,000 feet. The crash came just days after Pakistan allowed the domestic flights to resume operations after being grounded for days due to the coronavirus pandemic. Prime Minister Imran Khan has offered condolences to the families of the departed and has ensured an immediate inquiry is instituted. Federal Minister for Aviation, Ghulam Sarwar Khan, expressed his grief and sorrow over the tragedy and has instructed the Aircraft Accident Investigation Board to come up with a prompt inquiry report for the incident. In Pakistan's most recent deadly crash, a PIA plane in 2016 burst into flames after one of its two turboprop engines failed while flying from the remote north to Islamabad, killing more than 40 people. "They (terrorists) made their way from our parking area and opened fire on everyone." Speaking to Geo TV, the Inspector-General Karachi said that the situation was under control and all militants had been killed in the attack. He said that Rangers and police officials had entered the building and were conducting a search operation. Sindh Governor Imran Ismail condemned the incident, saying: "Strongly condemn the attack on PSX aimed at tarnishing our relentless war on terror. Have instructed the IG &amp; security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are caught alive &amp; their handlers are accorded exemplary punishments." Famous clients and infamous cases In the first few years Jethmalani earned the dubious reputation of being a ‘smuggler’s advocate’ after he represented mafia leader Haji Mastan in a case. He was only the first of the many underdogs that Jethmalani both successfully and unsuccessfully, represented. He picked cases that no one else would and select clients that no one would dare to — including stock market scamster Harshad Mehta, the man who killed former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, V Sriharan, and Afzal Guru who was convicted for an attack on the parliament. But, Jethmalani wasn’t always on the right side of things in the governments and public opinion. He defended religious guru Asaram Bapu in a rape case against a minor. He was also the lawyer of Manu Sharma who was accused of shooting Jesssica Lal — a case which turned into a public outrage. Yet, Jethmalani was unfazed through it all — even when public criticized him and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) expelled him in 2013.
