The company connects local businesses, influencers and customers. “We started simsim with the mission of helping users across India shop online with ease, enabled through small sellers and brands showcasing and selling their products using the power of content by trusted influencers. "I would say almost 70% of my friends take spironolactone and had really good results from it," Sims, 29, told Insider. Some "don't necessarily struggle with acne but just want that glow that spironolactone gives them," she said.It's not just Sims' friends: As the rate of<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/wellness/2022/06/21/why-adult-acne-is-rise-what-do-about-it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> adult acne continues to rise</a>, certain medications and treatments have gained cult followings. Spironolactone (known on TikTok as "spiro") is chief among them — even though it wasn't developed to clear up skin. Spironolactone's main function is to manage conditions like high blood pressure and heart failure by regulating a hormone called aldosterone, which balances sodium and water levels in the kidneys. Social media is flooded with<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@rebeccaclairem/video/6976294323247664390?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> before-and-after time-lapses</a> and<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@lainsssss/video/7091341237273251118?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> reviews</a> that claim it was the only effective treatment after a lifetime of dealing with cystic acne.In fact, it is something of<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@dermguru/video/7094267706375163182?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> an open secret among dermatologists</a>, according to <a href="https://med.umn.edu/bio/ronda-farah" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dr. Ronda Farah</a>, an associate professor of dermatology at the University of Minnesota Medical School. While "spiro" is not FDA-approved to treat acne, it is an appealing medication because of the "multiple positive things" it can do, Farah said — from clearing skin to regrowing hair on the scalp. But there are some side effects. We spoke to three people, including Sims, about their experiences on the drug, and the unexpected symptoms they believe others should know about.<h2>On spironolactone, you may need to pee — a lot</h2>Spironolactone is a diuretic, so one of the most common side effects Farah's seen in patients is <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/conditions-symptoms/nocturia">needing to pee more often</a>. In her experience, none of her patients stopped the medication because of that.For some, it's too much. "Not only did it not clear my skin, it caused frequent urination and anxiety," said Maria Marlowe, 36, who quit the medication after three months. "I felt like I was getting up from my desk once an hour to go."<h2>Other reported side effects include dizziness, anxiety, and fatigue</h2>Jen Darnell, 40, who was prescribed spironolactone to treat oily skin, said the medication did make her skin less oily — but she started developing "huge, painful cystic acne" on her jawline and neck. But "the worst was the anxiety and fatigue," said Darnell, who took spironolactone at night because of the tiredness she'd feel — only to "wake up in the middle of the night with anxiety and a rapid heartbeat." Her heart "felt like it was coming out of her chest," an experience she hadn't had before taking the medication.Sims, who initially noticed clearer skin once she upped her medication dosage, said she also experienced multiple side effects, including fatigue, dehydration, trouble sleeping, dizziness, and even fainting."I got up to go to the bathroom and right as I stood up I just knew something was very off," said Sims."I'm pretty sure I blacked out — I just fell backward, hit the floor, woke up, and my mom came over screaming 'Oh my God, are you okay?'"<h2>Lowering your dose or going off spironolactone can also bring your acne back</h2>Unlike Accutane, spironolactone is meant to be taken long-term. That's why lowering your dose or stopping entirely can cause your acne to return, Farah explained.In Sims's case, she tried lowering her dosage first, but she says the acne came back "so much worse" than before, which led her to quit the medication altogether.It's now been two months since she "cold-quit" and she reported her skin is "completely cleared and back to normal." She believes it's because spironolactone made her already dryness-prone skin feel even drier. <h2>Some side effects can be temporary, but more serious ones mean you should talk to your doctor</h2>"I typically tell my patients it's going to take three months to see an initial response," said Farah, who also encourages patients to reach out to their dermatologists if they experience an acne flare-up or other side effects on the medication so they can adjust the dosage.For some, the benefits of spironolactone don't outweigh the side effects. While Darnell's skin became less oily after starting on spironolactone, in the end, she went off it: "I'd rather have a slick forehead and huge pores."

The company plans to hire 400 people in leadership and engineering positions in the next 12 months. The company also plans to introduce newer categories on its platform and expand existing ones, along with building a stronger supply chain and tech stack. It is also looking to expand its geographical presence to 60 towns in the next 12-15 months, the company’s cofounder Angad Kikla told Business Insider. Overall, the company plans to enter 100 towns in the next 18 months. These towns will be shortlisted based on the digital literacy in the region, per capita income and penetration of other ecommerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart. The three-year-old startup’s latest Series C round is led by Norwest Venture Partners. General Catalyst, Citius, Jungle Ventures, Arena Ventures, Elevation, Accel and Waterbridge also participated in the round. Though the company has not disclosed its valuation, Kikla confirmed that it is above $300 million. Overall, the company has raised over $110 million. CityMall enables micro-entrepreneurs — known as community leaders on the platform — to set up their virtual stores on WhatsApp and sell products to their close networks using ecommerce tools and customer analytics. The company currently claims to have a network of 30,000 community leaders across 25 towns and cities, including Sonipat, Panipat, Rewari, Faizabad and others. The company — founded in 2019 by Kikla and Naisheel Vardhan — deals in grocery, fresh and packaged fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) products, electronics and fashion products in the small towns and villages. “80% of our customers do not use any other ecommerce apps,” Kikla said. CityMall currently competes with DealShare, Glowroad and Simsim. Meesho too was in the segment, but the company changed its business model to a full-fledged ecommerce platform. Accel is the largest shareholder in the company, with nearly 19% stake, according to business intelligence platform Tracxn. The five-year-old startup raised its last round in November 2020, when it raised $7 million. GlowRoad is a social commerce network, which enables suppliers to sell their products to end customers through resellers across more than 20,000 pincodes in 2,000 cities. The company focuses on Tier II and III markets through resellers, who are typically housewives, temporary workers or students. According to the company’s website, a reseller can make up to ₹20,000 per month if they sell close to 100 products a month. It claims to have over 6 million resellers on the platform. The company competes with DealShare, CityMall and YouTube-owned SimSim. Meesho too was in the segment, but the company changed its business model to a full-fledged ecommerce platform. Viewers can browse and shop products in real-time while watching videos. YouTube said it would expand this feature later this year, and it will now be available on live streams as well. YouTube creators are known to showcase their products and promote collaborations as well. This feature can help in making it easier for creators to sell products through their videos. At present, creators have to manually add links for products that viewers can purchase in the video’s description box. YouTube also lets creators sell their merchandise like t-shirts, hats, phone cases to subscribers. YouTube introduced this feature back in 2018 along with features such as channel memberships and premieres. <ul><li><keyword id="10879" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="YouTube">YouTube</keyword> has added a fourth option to help creators earn more money. </li><li>The new feature, called Super Thanks, has been under testing for the past one year. </li><li>It is now rolling out to thousands of YouTubers across 68 countries. </li></ul>YouTube today announced the rollout of a new feature called Super Thanks that lets viewers tip their favourite creators, making it the fourth such option to help creators earn money. "We have recently been experimenting with an applause feature that allows fans to show support for their favorite YouTube channels," the company said in a <a href="https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/introducing-newest-member-supers-family-super-thanks/">blog post</a>. YouTube has been testing the Super Thanks feature for a year now, but under a different name called ‘Viewer Applause’. It is currently rolling out to thousands of creators across 68 countries, and is available on the desktop, Android, and iOS. Other ways in which creators can earn money on YouTube, outside of advertisements, is via channel memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers. The new Super Thanks feature offers payment options ranging from $2 to $50 (approx. ₹150 to ₹3,700), or the equivalent local currency. Once you make the payment, you will see an animated GIF of balloons thanking you for the tip. To encourage tips, YouTube will also highlight your contribution as a comment. According to the company’s blog post, the new Super Thanks feature contributes to 15% of YouTuber <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCio_A3reqrvISsXBmX0M6cA">Nicholas Ashbaugh</a>’s total revenue, which is a significant addition. “Having a built-in feature like Super Thanks ensures that my viewers can show their love and support while watching a video -- without interrupting their viewing,” Ashbaugh added. While Super Thanks might seem similar to Super Chat and Stickers, you are not restricted to just live streams. This new feature lets you tip the creators across all the videos in which it has been enabled by the creator. It is worth noting that YouTube will take a 30% cut of all donations. In addition to the aforementioned four options to earn money, creators can also continue to earn from advertisements. However, these other options can help those creators whose videos have been demonetized, either by the creator voluntarily, or by YouTube. YouTube introduces Super Thanks – another feature to help creators earn more money

Swiggy intends to use this funding to double down on its core business, make acquisitions and invest in its grocery delivery business Instamart. Commenting on the latest fundraise, Swiggy’s chief executive and co-founder Sriharsha Majety said, “The scope of food delivery in India is massive and over the next few years, we will continue to invest aggressively into growing this category. Our biggest investments will be in our non-food businesses that have witnessed tremendous consumer love and growth in a short span, especially in the past 15 months of the pandemic.” A part of this funding will also be utilised to enhance Swiggy’s capabilities in technology and artificial intelligence (AI). Trell had raised $11.4 million in Series A funding, in August 2020, as a aftermath of the growth momentum it had gained post the TikTok ban in India. The discovery platform had also launched a <keyword id="623994" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="social-commerce">social commerce</keyword> section on its app around the same time to enable users to watch personalised product recommendations across beauty, personal care and wellness categories. Trell, founded in August 2017 by a team of Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay alumni Pulkit Agrawal, Prashant Sachan, Arun Lodhi and NITIE alumnus Bimal Kartheek Rebba, has raised $62 million to date. It will use the latest fundraise to expand its social commerce operations by entering the apparel, home care, mom and baby-care categories in the months to come. The startup claims to have over 100 million downloads on its platform and over 50 million monthly active users (MAU). Its content library features videos in 8 regional languages garnering over 20 billion monthly views, Trell said in a press note. The company is now looking to launch in additional six languages and expand its footprint in over 2000 cities and towns of India. Over the last few months, Trell has on boarded over 500 personal care and beauty brands, including Maybelline, L'Oréal and Garnier. “Trell has become the launchpad for many up-and-coming D2C [direct-to-consumer] brands and advertisers, who are leveraging our community of regional content creators to advertise their products and services on the platform… Our aim is to enable over 2000 brands to penetrate the deeper pockets of the country and communicate with their potential customers through regional content creators by 2022,” the company’s chief operating officer and co-founder Rebba, said. Meanwhile, the company’s chief technology officer and co-founder Lodhi added that they have been leveraging on their artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technology and neural networks to create users’ psychographic profile of customers’ behavioural patterns on the platform. This allows the platform to provide personalised content and product recommendation for the customers. These developments have also led Trell to record 10-15 times year-on-year growth and 30% month-on-month growth since inception, the company said. Social commerce is still at a nascent stage in India, but the players in this segment have been growing at an exponential rate. expanding its current workforce of 700 by hiring 150 employees, enhancing technology and building its logistics network that will include warehouses and hubs. Commenting on the latest fundraise, CityMall’s founder Kikla said, “We are building CityMall with a vision to transform their [users] experience with the internet -- by providing them with access to earning opportunities as well as affordable products and services.” Meanwhile, Verdhan added that the company aims to build a decentralised ecommerce ecosystem for the next 200-300 million internet users living in India’s small towns and villages. Notably, the company’s target audience are users from Tier II, Tier III and Tier IV regions of the country. Earlier, it focused on providing affordable everyday products like groceries and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) more to its customers. However, it recently expanded horizontally to offer electronics, electrical appliances, cosmetics and apparels. According to the previous press notes shared by the company, it has built a network of 20,000 community leaders who are catering to the needs of 2 lakh customers across communities. The company claims that its model, while offering traditional ecommerce services, helps avoid major customer acquisition as well as logistics cost.
