It will be hiring across tech, product and marketing teams. “The ongoing hiring is a part of our company's expansion plan, in India and abroad, as we look to substantially invest in our workforce by the end of 2022," said Krishna Kumar, founder and CEO of Simplilearn. It claims that 20% of its hiring or 160 employees would be freshers and college graduates. In the coming months, it will also be recruiting a CXO, vice president, and a senior vice president both for India and the US. In the US, it aims to appoint various C-suite level executives who will assist in strengthening and structuring the team present in the country. Kumar believes that the demand for upskilling and reskilling will prevail in the industry. “Over the past couple of years, the shift to online training and education led to a growth spurt in the number of providers in the industry. The industry is currently witnessing a transition phase with hybrid models of work and study,” he added. Founded in 2010, the company claims to conduct more than 3,000 live classes, with an average of 70,000 learners who collectively spend more than 500,000 hours each month on the platform. Its peers like Unacademy, Vedantu are laying off its workforce due to lower funding. Overall, the edtech industry has reportedly laid off 8,000 people due to economic slowdown. Edtech startup Simplilearn bucks the trend — to hire 800 people this year

And with the sector cluttered and many players spending big bucks on advertising, it is important for different players to come up with differentiated communications, to be able to capture its consumer’s mindspace. Simplilearn, which calls itself the world’s No 1 online Bootcamp for digital economy skills has just launched a campaign titled #CannotBeLockedDown and is investing big to take its message to its targeted consumers. We speak to Mark Moran, Chief Marketing Officer, Simplilearn who shares the platform’s journey so far, its plans around the new campaign and its strategies to capture a bigger market share. The campaign Simplilearn’s has come up with a high decibel campaign after quite a few years, but it plans to go all out with this new campaign. However, in the midst of everything, we have been fortunate enough to be supporting a community that's really out there, leaning into their careers and trying to make the best of the moment, learning skills while being stuck at home and doing their day jobs. We wanted to celebrate that spirit through this campaign while also talk about why we are good and why they should take a course from us. It just felt like a good time to spread some positivity and reset the conversation.” While it is a digital-first campaign, it will also be launched across print and TV. OTT will also be an important part of the mix. “We are putting aside Rs 100 crore for the campaign. It's a fully integrated campaign where you'll be seeing a lot happening on social, some contests to try and get some user-generated content in the same vein as what we are saying in the ads. On the video side, what we already have should last us the year but if we do need some refreshing, we will do that as and when needed,” explained Moran. Simplilearn’s journey so far Founded in 2010, Simplilearn is based in San Francisco, California, and Bangalore, India. It offers access to world-class work-ready training to individuals and businesses around the world. Currently, it is present in around 160 countries. Close to 60% of its revenue comes from outside India and now, the platform is working towards increasing its share in the country. “Around 40% of our revenues come from India currently, almost the same percentage comes from the US and the rest comes from APAC, the Middle East, Europe, and Latin America. We’re not present in China currently because we are an English-only platform for the time being. So we are quite global. We primarily address individual learners who are taking hold of their career, but about a quarter of our business is enterprise-oriented and B2B where companies are going through digital transformation or retraining large teams. A big part of our enterprise business actually comes from individual learners who have a great experience and recommend us to others,” he added. Currently, the platform has been focusing more on technology-based learners, its core offering is digital skills. It has also added <keyword id="6360839" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mba" source="Orion">MBA</keyword> to its list of offerings. On who their core audiences are, Moran said, “That would be people who are several years, around 4-5 years into their careers and we go all the way to people into their 40s and 50s who may have already started down the path of being a data scientist or digital marketer but they want to go deeper. And that's why they come to our bootcamps which are all designed around specific job roles that are needed in the market today.” The platform has partnerships with several universities and colleges including <keyword id="83617" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="purdue-university" source="Orion">Purdue University</keyword>, IIT Kanpur, Caltech and <keyword id="401516" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="university-of-massachusetts" source="Orion">University of Massachusetts</keyword>. Simplilearn had also launched SkillUp, its free learning platform to offer learners short-term skilling programs in November last year. The platform aims to onboard five million learners on its SkillUp platform in the next two years. But how is it working on making its platform more engaging, so that people do not miss out on the classroom experience? “We've spent the last 6 years building our online bootcamp. Our real differentiation is that we have, by far, the most interactive curriculum and pedagogy around our courses. Almost 60-70% of our curriculum is interactive in real-time. Our whole focus has been around super high engagement and we are sitting at the right place in the market. Research shows that people learn more efficiently by being engaged and active, it's hard to be a passive learner for most people. Most researchers expect that when this finally does go away, a massive amount of market share will remain online and they'll be consuming courses like ours that are super high engagement, highly personalized designed for a specific career that you're looking for,” said Moran. The future Currently Simplilearn is completely focused on offering upskilling programs. However, is there a chance of it offering courses to a younger audience? “We are now launching fully accredited degree programs. So you'll continue to see lots of additional partnerships announced with universities, both in India and around the world. The K-12 segment is not on our roadmap but the young adult right to people at the end of their career are more our addressable market,” he explained. On what their key areas of focus will be in the future, he said, “The nature of work these days is such that if you're not formally trying to up-skill what you're doing every couple of years, you really risk becoming obsolete in a couple of years because things are moving so quickly. We've all read statistics that suggest that there could be around 15 million people displaced around the globe in the next 8-10 years. There will be millions of new jobs created but they're all going to be in these digital categories, which is exactly what we focus on. We've always been around digital, we will expand into related business categories, like MBAs and other technically-oriented skills, but its probably going to be a long time before we teach Spanish or cooking or playing the guitar. Other people are doing it, and doing it really well, but we're be fundamentally focused on helping you have a successful career and a successful life.”

It's natural for startups to feel skeptical when entering a space which has not taken off yet or has a poor track record, but that is also where some of the biggest opportunities lie. For <a href="http://www.simplilearn.com/">Simplilearn</a> - an education startup which kicked off six years ago along with a few other online players, it was a risky affair to dive into the Ed-Tech space considering the general mood of investors was negative owing to the failure of several other education portals. 
 For some reason, nobody seemed to have been getting their model right until <keyword id="1309724" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Simplilearn">Simplilearn</keyword> emerged. It slowly raced ahead of everybody else and that too in no time. It was able to win the confidence of some of the biggest investors. That meant there was money in its pocket and the startup had wings to fly.

In a candid chat with <keyword id="687315" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kashyap-Dalal">Kashyap Dalal</keyword>, the Chief Business Officer at Simplilearn, we learnt some of the reasons why this Ed-Tech portal proved to be the best in the crowd: 
 
The idea with which this Startup was launched 
"The entire business started off more with the realization that there are sectors which are developing and growing so fast that normal academia does not have the ability to adapt to its pace. Typically, the cycle of curriculum updation at schools and colleges is 3 to 5 years. However, if you have to look at emerging fields like big data, cloud computing etc, every six months there's something new which is very critical for people to know. This is the reason we are clearly focused on extending education in some of these fast emerging technology areas," says Kashyap. 
 
The Market they decided to cater to and why

“The goal is to give them competency in emerging fields so that they can go ahead in their career. Right from the beginning, we have been focused on building our courses in such a way that people who use Simplilearn get hands-on skills, and not just theoretical knowledge. We build courses thinking – if I wanted a person in my Big Data Team, what should he know. Apart from the professionals, the other market that we cater to is enterprises who want to train an entire team. This is again a very large line of business for us," says Kashyap.

They wanted people who are “on top of their game”. 
 
Kashyap says – “It is just incidental that most of the experts we have are based in the US. We just want people who are really on the cutting edge of the field and who can predict the future, as opposed to someone who is stuck in legacy systems. Their experience and knowledge helps us be on the cutting edge as well.” 
 This forms one of the major reasons for Simplilearn’s success. We asked him how they were able to rope in thought leaders like <keyword id="3565625" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="joseph-steinberg">Joseph Steinberg</keyword>. What Kashyap said makes for one more crucial success mantra and that is..... 
 
This Ed-Tech portal didn’t go the typical way 
“Simplilearn started off on a global level. It is different compared to companies which start in India and then test the waters globally. Because the online footprint of Simplilearn is not that of an Indian startup, things have not been as difficult for us. More importantly, when you tell someone about your company, they don’t see where it is based; they see the online footprint and what people are talking about you. If it looks great to them, there is no reason why they would feel skeptical about joining us and I think that is what happened with us too,” says Kashyap. 
 
Experts here are just not consultants, they are Advisory Board members 
He adds – “Also, we give our experts the opportunity to become our business partners. They are not with us for part time assignments or on a consulting basis; they are our Advisory Board members. Therefore, we make it really very meaning for them to associate with us. It’s simple; you need to have technology and a very large set up to be able to run a business. We tell them we have it, you give us the expertise and knowledge and we will drive the business.” 
 
The Way Simplilearn Courses were built 
Their courses are highest on engagement. There are reasons behind this, Kashyap explains – “When a person starts a Simplilearn course, he decides his study plan, whether he wants to devote 3 or 6 hours a week to the course depending on his personal comfort. The system immediately starts building his course according to the inputs provided. On not adhering to the plan, reminder emails would go to him. More importantly, the courses are designed in a way that the first 15-20 minutes can get a user excited about pursuing it. It would talk about the industry, the high end education that the course will cover in the module and builds that entire context as to why it makes sense to do the course. So, before even starting out, the person has a bird’s eye view on the path he is going to take and that makes it very easy for them to adopt the course and stay on, otherwise often when suddenly online courses dive into hard core learning aspects, user loses interest because he fails to understand what is being taught.” 
 
With nearly 40% revenues coming from both the US and the Indian market, even as this online education portal has become the market leader in India and is striving to sustain its place, in the US, Kashyap says, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done considering the dynamics there are different and the US market definitely has more competition in the Ed-tech space.
