With the introduction of affordable e-scooters, the company is expecting to retain not only the existing investors but also onboard institutional players and family offices globally for its proposed USD 100-million fund-raise, Rajkumar told PTI. <br /><br /> The company last month launched its maiden premium e-scooter Simple ONE, at Rs 1.45 lakh and commenced deliveries in a phased manner with Bengaluru to begin with from 7th of this month. <br /><br /> The introduction of an affordable e-scooter is part of the company's plans to have a portfolio of three scooters, one performance bike and possibly a four-wheeler in the next three years, Simple One founder and CEO said. <br /><br /> "Rs one lakh to Rs 1.30 lakh is the affordable price point for a low-end scooter with minimal performance. This is what would matter to the customers. And we are working on those price points and looking to compete with those brands," Rajkumar said, adding that the e-scooters, will be launched in the next quarter. <br /><br /> <keyword id="6360326" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="electric" source="Orion">Electric</keyword> two-wheeler sales in the last fiscal surged over two-and-half fold year-on-year to 8,46,976 units (based on data sourced from OEMs), EV manufactures body SMEV had said in April. <br /><br /> Of this, the industry saw sales of 1.2 lakh low-speed e-scooters with top speed less than 25 km/hour, while the total sales of high-speed E2W (top speed more than 25km/hr) stood at 7,26,976 during the year. <br /><br /> Rajkumar said Simple Energy has shelved plans to develop a vehicle for the last-mile delivery as almost 90 per cent of the market has already been covered by the earlier entrants. <br /><br /> Simple Energy's focus will be to develop the B2C model more going forward, he said, adding that the company is working on the charging infra, which is expected to go live in August, Rajkumar said. <br /><br /> On funding, he said "we have a great pipeline of existing and new investors in our USD 100-million fund-raise plan for production and expansion." <br /><br /> Besides, the company is also tapping in family-offices globally for this round of funding, he said. <br /><br /> Earlier in February this year, Simple Energy had raised USD 20 million in a bridge round from a clutch of investors to ramp up production. <br /><br /> The company has a manufacturing facility in Shoolagiri in Tamil Nadu with an annual capacity of around 5-lakh units.

Simple Energy plans to roll out 2 new affordable e-scooters in next quarter

<keyword id="16392199" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicle-startup-simple-energy" source="Orion">Electric vehicle startup Simple Energy</keyword> on Tuesday announced raising USD 20 million (about ₹165 crore) from a clutch of investors as a part of its ongoing <keyword id="3336625" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bridge-round" source="Orion">Bridge round</keyword>. The funds will be utilised in a phased manner to ramp up production of the company's maiden e-scooter Simple ONE, which has not yet been delivered to a single customer even after 18 months of its launch.<br /><br />The company has been deferring deliveries of the vehicle since December 2021.<br /><br />"We have received a phenomenal pre-booking response, and to cater to the demand, we are raising funds in a timely manner. Simple Energy raises USD 20 mn from investors

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Maureen Hagar was an emotional eater who weighed 355 pounds two years ago.</li><li>She joined a gym, followed a so-called "slow-carb" diet, and once lost 10 pounds in a week.</li></ul><p>First, it was the scooter; second, the walker; and then a cane.</p><p>Maureen Hagar ditched her <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flying-with-wheelchairs-airlines-disability-rights-2021-7">mobility aids </a>after losing 185 pounds through a healthy diet and regular exercise.</p><p>The 73-year-old, who weighed 355 pounds when she began the regime in 2022, is down to 190 pounds — and has a goal of shedding about a dozen more.</p><p>"I'm very proud," Hagar told Business Insider. "It's taken a lot of stamina and commitment."</p><p>She said she'd had issues with her weight throughout her life, sometimes not helped by her mom. She meant well but, after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ina-gartens-favorite-chocolate-cake-2022-6">baking a cake</a>, would tell Hagar she couldn't have a slice.</p><p>"She was thin, and so were my sisters," Hagar said. "She'd bring in the cake and say everyone could have some except me."</p><p>Soon, she hid Hershey's candy bars in her bedroom and ate giant bowls of Rocky Road ice cream.</p><h2 id="aaabadc3-0852-47e1-bd87-55d46b5299ab">Hagar turned to food to deal with her stress</h2><p>Nevertheless, the retired secretary said she was relatively athletic and burned calories while enjoying sports like swimming and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-made-new-friends-playing-tennis-we-talk-everyday-2023-8">tennis</a>.</p><p>Then, after getting married and having her son 34 years ago, she found it increasingly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/overeating-physical-signs-according-to-a-dietitian-2022-8">hard not to over-eat</a>.</p><p>"I'd eat things like casseroles and pasta, but instead of just one portion, I'd have at least two," she said. "I would wait until my husband was asleep and go back to the stove or refrigerator."</p><p>Hagar developed a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/emotional-eating">pattern of comfort eating</a>. Her son was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/took-decades-accept-sons-autism-diagnosis-2024-5">diagnosed with special needs</a>, and she turned to food as a means of dealing with the stress. "I bottled up my emotions," she said.</p><div type="image" title="A woman wearing a black, blue and beige patterned shirt." height="2250" width="3000" msid="110804133" hostid="261"></div><p>She <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/conditions-symptoms/signs-of-diabetes">became diabetic </a>in the early 2000s. Doctors warned of the health risks, and she followed several diets and exercise programs — once losing 70 pounds, which she regained during the pandemic.</p><p>The family invested in a mobility scooter so that Hagar could join them on hikes and strolls along the boardwalks in California, their home state.</p><p>Then, in 2023, Hagar's mindset finally shifted. She was 355 pounds — morbidly obese for her 5ft 4in height. A relative encouraged her to join a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.lifetime.life/">Life Time gym</a>, where she began doing low-impact aqua aerobics, including marching in the Olympic-size pool.</p><p>She went from completing just a handful of laps to 25 and then 50, encouraged by her personal trainer, Derek Conway, whom she hired in July 2023.</p><p>Conway, also worked with Hagar, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/woman-mental-physical-health-improved-coming-out-gay-2023-1">who has arthritis</a>, on the gym floor, doing gentle cardio on a seated elliptical machine and exercise bike. They did strength and conditioning exercises — and now spar with boxing equipment.</p><h2 id="f298597d-801c-4663-a37b-f23f267fdde8">The trainer said low-intensity exercise suited Hagar better</h2><p>"One of our goals has been to redevelop her balance and dexterity in her feet," Conway told Business Insider. "She'll step up and over small steps using support and trudge through the water, pushing against it."</p><p>He said the key to Hagar's fitness program was to get as much movement as possible for as long as possible. She goes to the gym in the mornings five days a week and stays for three hours.</p><p>"We don't do anything high-intensity except swimming," the trainer continued. "She'll swim as far as possible, then walk until her energy returns.</p><p>"Instead of sprints, we do steady-rate cardio, exerting moderate effort."</p><div type="image" title="A personal trainer sparring with his client at a gym" height="423" width="564" msid="110804130" hostid="261"></div><p>The 34-year-old helped devise a nutrition plan for Hagar. It is based on the so-called<a target="_blank" href="https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/slow-carb-diet#TOC_TITLE_HDR_2"> "slow carb" diet</a>, which includes high-protein foods such as eggs, fish, and chicken and vegetables, especially legumes, such as lentils and beans.</p><p>"We cut out all bread, processed food, and simple sugars," Conway said. Hagar said the diet was responsible for limiting her glycemic response. She reversed her diabetes and stopped taking medication last November.</p><p>She told BI she was shocked to lose as much as 10 pounds in one week. Her average weight loss was four to five pounds. Hagar's scooter and walker were consigned to the garage. She tossed one of her canes and started to walk without the other.</p><h2 id="67f5d182-1e58-45f9-83cd-d3ded0440de4">Hagar, 73, and Conway, 34, have a special bond</h2><p>Next week, she plans a kayak trip with her husband and friends.</p><p>The septuagenarian also credits Conway with persuading her to discuss her feelings openly. Despite the 39-year age gap, she said their time together was a form of "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-does-therapy-work-and-what-is-it-2019-10">talk therapy</a>."</p><p>"He cared about what I was sharing, and we got all my emotions out," Hagar said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>I traveled to Timor-Leste in May and spent four days exploring its capital city.</li><li>Timor-Leste is one of the least-visited countries in the world.</li></ul><p>I've spent the past two years <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/southeast-asia-travel-mistakes-packing-weather-clothing-traditions-medicine-2024-4">traveling to 20 countries</a>. While most of these countries — from the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/budget-trip-maldives-cheap-hotel-flights-travel-guide-2024-1">Maldives</a> to France — were among the world's most popular, it was the off-the-beaten-path destinations that I enjoyed most.</p><p>Last month, I traveled to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/shortest-people-in-world-by-country-2019-6#1-timor-leste-15547cm-5-feet-128-inches-25">Timor-Leste</a>, a country located in the South Pacific. The country comprises the eastern part of Timor Island and two smaller islands. At 5,800 square miles, it's comparable in size to the Bahamas.</p><p>It's also the 14th least-visited country in the world and the least-visited in Asia, according to a January report from <a target="_blank" href="https://ceoworld.biz/2024/01/15/revealed-here-are-the-least-visited-countries-in-the-world-2024/">CEOWorld magazine</a>. Some 81,000 tourists visited Timor-Leste in 2023 — putting it just ahead of Chad and Sierra Leone, per the report.</p><p>The lack of tourists is not a direct result of the pandemic either. Back in 2019, only around 80,000 tourists had visited, <a target="_blank" href="https://tradingeconomics.com/east-timor/tourist-arrivals">per the National Statistics Directorate Timor</a>. While researching my trip, I struggled to find information online for tourists — save for a handful of short vlogs on YouTube. I ended up having to learn along the way.</p><p>Here are seven things that surprised me about Timor-Leste.</p><h2 id="f76c0f10-8601-4a33-94c8-02ee81848890">1. It's difficult to fly there — and even harder to get around.</h2><div type="image" title="Woman on a scooter by the sea" height="3024" width="4032" msid="111501748" hostid="261" sizebytes="853296"></div><p id="f76c0f10-8601-4a33-94c8-02ee81848890">Only a handful of airlines fly to Dili, the capital, where the only international airport in Timor-Leste is located. Tourists can only fly to Dili from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bali-digital-nomad-cost-jobs-career-guide-lifestyle-2023-3">Bali</a>, Indonesia, and Darwin, Australia. I was in Bali for three weeks, so I decided to fly with the Indonesian budget airline Citilink. Dili's airport is tiny — there's only one departure gate and one runway.</p><p>There are no <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-robotaxi-ride-hailing-app-video-2024-6">ride-hailing</a> services in Timor-Leste. While there are some taxis to help tourists get around, I only spotted them around the airport and in the city center. I ended up meeting Fernando, a local, who took me around the city on a scooter. I found that traveling via scooter was the best way to sightsee from the coasts to the surrounding mountains.</p><h2 id="66c78e68-2826-4826-801d-28dac26d0599">2. There aren't many options when it comes to accommodation.</h2><div type="image" title="A hotel room in Timor-Leste" height="2160" width="2880" msid="111501749" hostid="261" sizebytes="126402"></div><p>While <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=d8a8d663cf225f9f1af6c2c8b57fcbf5a32c449e75ec22631b46dca219696226&amp;postID=6683bb467d643e2830029b46&amp;postSlug=travel-timor-leste-south-pacific-asia-tips-beach-coast-2024-7&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hilton.com%2Fen%2Fhotels%2Fdiltshi-hilton-dili-palm-springs%2F">Hilton</a> plans to open a hotel in Dili's business district later this year, when I visited, there were no luxury resorts or international hotel chains in Timor-Leste. With only around 70 hotels and guesthouses in the country listed on Google Hotels, lodging choices online were limited. I booked three nights at Timor Plaza Hotel &amp; Apartments, a three-star hotel located next to a small mall in the city center.</p><p>After chatting with other travelers, I found many were staying in local <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hostel-singapore-backpacking-best-rated-tripadvisor-google-review-photos-price-2022-4">guesthouses</a> by the beach. They're usually a simple set-up, comprising a small room with a bed, mosquito net, and a fan. You can spot signs at the side of the road showing if there are rooms available for the night. Since there are very few tourists in the country, chances are you can negotiate a rate and book your stay on the spot.</p><h2 id="61c44bd0-2e2d-4e8a-a3fe-467bf94258a9">3. Locals use US dollars — which means it's more expensive than other nearby countries.</h2><div type="image" title="A plate of nasi goreng and a cup of iced tea" height="2267" width="3022" msid="111501752" hostid="261" sizebytes="398272"></div><p>The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dedollarization-rich-countries-advanced-economies-buy-gold-dollar-share-reserves-2024-6">US dollar</a> is the official currency. While used interchangeably, The East Timor Centavo is only minted in coins and pegged to the US dollar at $1 to 100 centavos. This makes Timor-Leste more expensive than many other countries in Asia.</p><p>In Bali, a plate of <a target="_blank" href="https://thebalisun.com/worlds-most-decadent-and-expensive-nasi-goreng-on-bali-beach-club-menu/#:~:text=In%20popular%20tourist%20hotspots%2C%20the,priced%20between%20IDR%20120%2D180%2C000.">nasi goreng</a> — an Indonesian fried rice with satay — costs an average of between $3 to $4.50. In Dili, I paid between $10 and $15 for a similar dish. In Bali, renting a scooter for a day can cost as little as $3. In Dili, it <a target="_blank" href="https://www.timorleste.tl/plan-your-trip/transport/">costs</a> over five times more, between $25 and $35.</p><h2 id="65e24fa0-c946-4582-8ca7-33fc8e4b0ddf">4. Not everyone speaks the same language.</h2><div type="image" title="A woman working in a fabric shop in Timor-Leste" height="2424" width="3232" msid="111501753" hostid="261" sizebytes="578414"></div><p id="65e24fa0-c946-4582-8ca7-33fc8e4b0ddf">While Portuguese and Tetum are the official languages of Timor-Leste, English and Indonesian are the working languages. However, only 13.5% of locals speak Portuguese, <a target="_blank" href="https://2009-2017.state.gov/outofdate/bgn/timorleste/101181.htm#:~:text=As%20a%20result%20of%20the,according%20to%20the%202004%20census.">according to the US Department of State</a>.</p><p id="65e24fa0-c946-4582-8ca7-33fc8e4b0ddf">The majority of locals I met in Dili spoke Tetum and Indonesian. Due to the high number of ethnic groups in Timor-Leste, there are at least <a target="_blank" href="https://minorityrights.org/country/timor-leste/">16 additional languages</a> between them.</p><p>As I grew up in Singapore and can speak some <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solo-woman-female-traveler-backpacking-safety-asia-indonesia-jakarta-guide-2023-10">Indonesian</a>, when locals didn't speak English, that was my fallback language. Although Fernando, my guide, told me tourists needed to be careful when conversing in Indonesian. He noted that some locals may get offended, considering the complicated history between these countries. I found that it was best to ask what language they prefer to speak when in doubt.</p><h2 id="69939375-afec-423a-9147-692be9d7cb72">5. Very few American chains operate in the country.</h2><div type="image" title="A café overlooking Dili in Timor-Leste" height="2267" width="3022" msid="111501760" hostid="261" sizebytes="657492"></div><p id="69939375-afec-423a-9147-692be9d7cb72">Only a handful of American food chains exist in Timor-Leste, mostly in Dili's city center. I spotted a Burger King and a Gloria Jean's Coffee outlet next to each other right outside the hotel where I was staying — McDonald's doesn't operate in Timor-Leste. As an adventurous eater, I had all my meals at locally-run eateries and cafés, where I had Indonesian and Timorese fare.</p><p>A few stores sell American brands like Head and Shoulders and Maybelline when it comes to toiletries and makeup. But no-name brands are more common and are sold for much cheaper.</p><h2 id="71b61b0f-aec7-4ade-af7a-19c88c2aa686">6. The landscapes are some of the most pristine in the region.</h2><div type="image" title="The view of a beach in northern Dili" height="1816" width="2422" msid="111501750" hostid="261" sizebytes="670366"></div><p id="71b61b0f-aec7-4ade-af7a-19c88c2aa686">I found that Timor-Leste offered some of the most <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sri-lanka-train-coast-colombo-ticket-price-route-photos-2024-3">scenic views</a> in Asia.</p><p>I spent most of my time at Cristo Rei Beach — which is overlooked by an 88-foot-long statue of Jesus Christ — at the northern tip of Dili. It's a natural white-sand beach with the clearest waters I have ever seen — even clearer than <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/expensive-vs-budget-overwater-villa-in-maldives-comparison-save-money-2024-5">the Maldives</a>. I could see the outline of the mountainous Atauro Island from the coast, famed for its rich, colorful reefs.</p><p>After traveling the region extensively, I found Dili the most scenic capital city I've seen. Its gorgeous coastline is flanked by towering mountains.</p><h2 id="47c7cd9d-59ae-4743-b42e-1964cbe406b9">7. You won't find the local nightlife listed online — but you'll find it in the streets.</h2><div type="image" title="A national day celebration with fireworks in the background" height="768" width="1024" msid="111501756" hostid="261" sizebytes="48380"></div><p>On Google Maps, there are only a few local <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nightclubs-singapore-red-light-district-closing-sex-workers-orchard-towers-2023-6">nightlife</a> establishments listed — and most have no photos, reviews, or information. But my guide, Fernando, shared that locals love drinking the local palm wine and dancing to Kizomba, a dance genre originating from Angola, in the late evenings.</p><p>I was fortunate to be in Timor-Leste on May 20, during National Day. It marks when the country gained <a target="_blank" href="https://www.timorleste.tl/east-timor/about/history/">independence from Indonesia</a>. I found thousands of people partying by the beach and hundreds of motorcycles revving down the coast to celebrate the day. The energy was unexpected — and a memorable surprise that I'll never forget.</p>
