<ul><li>For the financial year ending March 2023, the <keyword id="6359180" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sia" source="Orion">SIA</keyword> Group posted a record net profit of SGD 2,157 million (USD 1,598 million) for the year.</li><li>SIA's revenue rose 133.4 per cent or by SGD 10,160 million (USD 7,526 million) year-on-year to a record SGD 17,775 million (USD 13,167 million). </li></ul>Singapore, May 22 (ANI): Following consecutive quarters of standout financial results, many expected Singapore Airlines (SIA) to turn in a dazzling set of numbers last week when it announced its full-year results. Singapore's national carrier did not disappoint as it reported the highest annual profit in its 76-year history. <br /><br />For the financial year ending March 2023, the SIA Group posted a record net profit of SGD 2,157 million (USD 1,598 million) for the year, versus an SGD 962 million (USD713 million) net loss in the previous year, an earnings gain of SGD 3,119 million (USD 2,310 million).<br /><br />SIA's revenue rose 133.4 per cent or by SGD 10,160 million (USD 7,526 million) year-on-year to a record SGD 17,775 million (USD 13,167 million). Although capacity was ramped up by 94 per cent, it was outpaced by traffic which rose 449.9 per cent. This led passenger flown revenue to expand by SGD 10,560 million (or 376.3 per cent) to SGD 13,366 million. Revenue per available seat-kilometre (RASK) was 10 Singapore cents, the highest yearly RASK in the carrier's history.<br /><br />During the financial year under review, the two airlines in the SIA group, full-service Singapore Airlines and low-cost Scoot, together served a total of 26.5 million passengers, a six-fold increase from a year ago.<br /><br />With capacity at only 79 per cent of pre-COVID levels as of March 2023, there is still room for the airline to do better. It said that its capacity is projected to reach an average of around 83 per cent of pre-COVID levels in the first half of the current financial year.<br /><br />The outstanding results is mostly because of the way SIA responded to the crisis wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic on the airline industry.<br /><br />As borders closed, and airlines stopped flying, SIA with the support of shareholders and its lenders managed to raise over USD16 billion of cash to shore up its balance sheet. This enabled it to retain more than 80 per cent of its staff as well as keep most of its aircraft operational. Many regional competitors had to furlough or let staff go and sell aircraft and as a result, had a slower start once borders reopened again.<br /><br />During COVID, SIA redeployed cabin crew to other sectors including as "care ambassadors" in healthcare facilities and as "transport ambassadors" to help manage safe practices on public transport.<br /><br />The carrier also took the opportunity to upgrade some of its cabins and also merged regional carrier <keyword id="676010" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="silkair" source="Orion">Silkair</keyword> with its main full-carrier Singapore Airlines to save costs. Digital services were also upgraded and a lifestyle rewards app Kris+ was launched.<br /><br />As borders reported, SIA rapidly deployed services to meet the pent-up travel demand charging above-average fares as regional competitors played catch-up.<br /><br />At the moment, SIA is operating at over 80 per cent of its pre-COVID levels whereas the average passenger capacity of international scheduled services of Asia-Pacific airlines is at around 58 per cent.<br /><br />To prepare for the future, SIA is looking into several strategic initiatives including the continued expansion of its network through deeper collaboration with like-minded airlines. One of these initiatives is the proposed merger of <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword> and Vistara to strengthen SIA's presence in the fast-growing Indian aviation market.<br /><br />Through its ownership of Vistara and a further injection of USD 250 million in November last year, Singapore Airlines will be a 25.1 per cent owner of Air <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> once the merger is approved by the Indian authorities. <br /><br />When Tata Sons appointed Singapore Airlines (SIA) veteran <keyword id="5863894" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="campbell-wilson" source="Orion">Campbell Wilson</keyword> as chief executive officer in the middle of last year, it was probably with a view to trying to mirror the success of SIA at the newly acquired Air India.<br /><br />Wilson, a New Zealander, spent 25 years at SIA rotating through various roles including chief executive of Scoot, senior vice president of sales and marketing and worked for the airline in countries like Japan, Canada, and Hong Kong.<br /><br />If investments committed to the new Air India are an indication, Tata is on the right track to turning Air India around to become a more modern airline, with a better on-time record, better in-flight service, better cabin environment and an all-around better customer experience. <br /><br />The new owners have committed USD 70 billion to aircraft, USD 200 million to IT, and USD 400 million to refit the existing fleet. In February this year, it made the largest single order for new aircraft worldwide by buying 470 planes from both Boeing and Airbus.<br /><br />To support the growth, the airline has recruited thousands of staff, including 10 times the number of cabin crew and 10 times the number of pilots that would have been typically recruited each year.<br /><br />Following years of under-investment, and lack of recruitment and training, it has already made good progress in less than a year according to Wilson.<br /><br />Speaking to Australian aviation blogger <keyword id="8281779" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sam-chui" source="Orion">Sam Chui</keyword>, he said, "We've changed all the menus. We've replaced seats, curtains, carpets, and seat cushions. We've repaired a lot of the inflight entertainment systems, particularly in first and business class that weren't previously working. We are making good progress in economy class despite supply chain constraints."<br /><br />Recently, the carrier also attained the number one ranking for domestic punctuality for the first time in eight years and has consistently been amongst the top two or three in India.<br /><br />"The biggest challenge for us at the moment is simply the scale and pace of growth. It is a sizable airline. We carry over 100,000 people a day already," he added.<br /><br />Although the impact of the changes will only be felt over time, Air India's CEO is confident that the changes he has implemented will bear fruit and lead the airline back to being a premium global carrier eventually.<br /><br />CEO Wilson said, "Air India was in the 1960s, one of the best airlines in the world. It's got a long 90-year history. The past few years have been a bit challenging with under-investment. But now under the Tata group, which took ownership in January of 2022, there is a very significant effort to get Air India back to the heights it once was." By Gurdip Singh <p> Singapore, Aug 17 () Three Indians were among six imported coronavirus cases reported in Singapore, which has so far registered 55,838 COVID-19 infections, officials said on Monday. </p><p> The Ministry of Health (MOH) said that three of the six imported cases reported on Sunday were arrivals from India on July 31. </p><p> The three Indians, who came to Singapore on dependant's passes here, and the other three cases, who came from Philippines and Russia, have been placed on 14-day 'stay-home-notice', the ministry said. </p><p> On Monday, Singapore reported 91 new COVID-19 cases, taking the country's coronavirus tally to 55,838, it said. </p><p> Most of the new cases are foreigners on work permits currently in quarantine. </p><p> On Sunday, 432 COVID-19 patients were discharged from hospitals. Now the number of virus-recovered patients stands at 51,938. </p><p> A total of 82 patients remain in hospitals, and 3,685 people are recuperating in community facilities.</p><p> With a steady flow of imported cases from overseas, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) has decided to routinely test pilots and cabin crew working for Singapore carriers for COVID-19. The tests begin on August 20. </p><p> The rule applies to the air crew of Singapore Airlines, SilkAir, Scoot and Jetstar Asia. </p><p> The testing of airline members is part of stepped-up precautions against spread of the virus in the community areas, The Straits Times reported on Monday citing the CAAS statement. </p><p> "Existing protocols have been effective in keeping air crew of Singapore carriers safe as there have been no positive COVID-19 cases among air crew of Singapore carriers for more than three months," said the CAAS. </p><p> "However, there is a need for continued vigilance and COVID-19 testing will provide added assurance for crew, their families and the general public that any imported infection can be quickly detected, and given necessary medical treatment promptly," it added. </p><p> They will be examined using the polymerase chain reaction test, which is the testing standard used globally to diagnose if someone is currently infected with the coronavirus. </p> The CAAS added that air crew of Singapore carriers returning from regions where travellers there are allowed to serve their stay-home notices at their own accommodation will be exempt from COVID-19 testing. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="12018329" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="aviation" source="Orion">Aviation</keyword> ranking firm <keyword id="11921291" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="skytrax" source="Orion">SkyTrax</keyword> has unveiled the best <keyword id="11921290" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airports" source="Orion">airports</keyword> in the world for 2022.</li><li>Asia and Europe dominated the list, with Qatar's <keyword id="14230225" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hamad-international-airport" source="Orion">Hamad International Airport</keyword> maintaining its top title.</li></ul><p>The top 100 airports in the world have once again been unveiled.</p><p>Aviation rating firm SkyTrax has <a href="https://skytraxratings.com/hamad-international-airport-is-named-the-worlds-best-airport">announced</a> its annual World Airports Awards for 2022 on Thursday, and Asia and Europe dominated the list. The organization uses global customer satisfaction surveys taken from 2021 to 2022 to determine the top airports. </p><p>According to SkyTrax, the surveys, which include over 550 airports worldwide, are the "quality benchmark for the world airport industry" and are "independent of any airport control, influence or input." </p><p>The survey covers things like terminal layout, comfort, seating, WiFi availability, restaurant options, retail vendors, and level of staff service, per the firm.</p><p>Doha's Hamad International Airport held onto its crown this year after being named the top airport in the world in 2021. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/skytrax-revealed-top-20-airports-in-the-world-for-2021-8">Last year was the first time in eight years</a> that Singapore's Changi International Airport was dethroned as the number one airport.</p><p>Among the top 20 airports in the world, there were 10 in Asia and 10 in Europe. Australia's Melbourne International Airport came in at number 26, while only two North American airports made the top 30, including Seattle-Tacoma and Vancouver.</p><p>Overall, 12 US airports managed to crack the top 100 list, while Canada only earned three spots. </p><p>Here's a closer look at the top 20 airports in the world, according to SkyTrax.</p><h2>20. Hong Kong International Airport</h2><div type="image" title="Hong Kong International Airport." height="768" width="1024" msid="92303807" hostid="261"></div><p>Hong Kong International Airport fell from number 10 in 2021 to number 20 this year. The airport is the gateway to Hong Kong, once serving as one of the largest cargo and passenger airports in the world. However, the COVID-19 pandemic caused the hub to lose significant traffic, and effectively fall "off the map," <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-04-06/hong-kong-has-fallen-off-map-as-aviation-hub-airline-group-says">Bloomberg reported</a>.</p><p>Despite the low numbers, it still earned the title of best airport with less than two million passengers, according to SkyTrax. The airport serves as a base for Cathay Pacific, Cathay Dragon, Hong Kong <keyword id="11898285" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="airlines" source="Orion">Airlines</keyword>, Hong Kong Express Airways, and cargo carrier Air Hong Kong.</p><h2>19. Vienna International Airport</h2><div type="image" title="Vienna International Airport." height="768" width="1024" msid="92303812" hostid="261"></div><p>Vienna International Airport jumped four spots from number 23 in 2021 to number 19 in 2022. The airport is a gateway to Central Europe, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East, and acts as a hub for Austrian Airlines. Vienna is also a focus city for Eurowings Europe, ultra-low-cost airline Ryanair, Korean Air Cargo, and Hungarian-based Wizz Air.</p><h2>18. Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport</h2><div type="image" title="Terminal 2 at Guangzhou airport" height="3840" width="5119" msid="92303815" hostid="261"></div><p>China's Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport ranked number 18 in 2022, falling four spots from last year. Besides earning a top 20 spot, the airport also earned several other awards, including being the best airport in China, the cleanest airport in China, and the best airport with over 40 million passengers.</p><p>Guangzhou acts as a hub for China Southern Airlines, 9 Air, FedEx Express, Shenzhen Airlines, and Hainan Airlines, and as a focus city for China Eastern Airlines.</p><h2>17. Copenhagen Airport</h2><div type="image" title="Copenhagen Airport." height="768" width="1024" msid="92303817" hostid="261"></div><p>Copenhagen Airport, which serves as a gateway to the Oresund region of Denmark, jumped one spot from number 18 in 2021. The airport also earned an award for the best immigration processing. Copenhagen serves as a hub for Scandinavian Airlines and Norwegian Air Shuttle, and a focus city for Danish carrier DAT. </p><h2>16. The airport is a major gateway to the United Arab Emirates, is one of the largest airports in the Middle East, and is a major cargo hub in the region. Dubai has become a key hub for Emirates, which operates the largest fleet of Airbus A380 jumbo jets. The airport is also home to FedEx Express and Flydubai.</p><h2>13. London Heathrow Airport</h2><div type="image" title="London Heathrow Airport." height="767" width="1022" msid="92303829" hostid="261"></div><p>London Heathrow Airport fell out of the top 10 this year, having ranked number eight in 2021. The airport is one of the busiest in the world and serves as the main international gateway to London. Heathrow is a base for British Airways and a focus city for Virgin Atlantic.</p><h2>12. Istanbul Airport is still being expanded, and, by 2025, is set to become the world's largest airport by passenger traffic with the capability to handle 200 million travelers per year, <a href="https://istanbul-international-airport.com/">according to the airport</a>.</p><p>Istanbul is home to Turkish Airlines and won several other awards, including the best family-friendly airport, best airport shopping, best airport in southern Europe, and best airport with 30-40 million passengers.</p><h2>7. Munich Airport</h2><div type="image" title="Munich Airport." height="768" width="1024" msid="92303847" hostid="261"></div><p>Munich Airport stayed in the top 10 this year, only falling one spot from 2021. The airport earned several other awards, including being named the best airport in central Europe, being the best airport with 10 to 15 million passengers, and having the best airport hotel. Munich is one of the busiest in Germany by passenger traffic and acts as a hub for Lufthansa and Lufthansa CityLine. </p><h2>6. Changi has several amenities, like a swimming pool and movie theater, and is home to Singapore Airlines, Jetstar Asia Airways, Scoot, and SilkAir.</p><h2>2. Tokyo International Airport</h2><div type="image" title="Tokyo International Airport." height="768" width="1024" msid="92303862" hostid="261"></div><p>Tokyo International Airport, commonly known as Haneda Airport, is once again the second-best airport in the world. The airport is the busier of the two airports serving Tokyo, having been restricted to just domestic and regional flying for many years. However, international flights were launched in 2010, and the airport is a convenient option for inbound passengers visiting Tokyo.</p><p>The airport won a handful of other awards this year, including being the world's cleanest airport, the world's best domestic airport, having the best accessible facilities, and being the best airport in Asia. Haneda is home to Air Do, Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Skymark Airlines, and Skynet Asia Airways.</p><h2>1. The aircraft is the shortest variant of fuel efficient MAX family.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>Boeing is preparing to send a warning to all the operators that have taken delivery of its new 737 Max aircraft, according to an anonymous source cited by <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-11-07/boeing-is-said-close-to-issuing-safety-bulletin-on-737-max-jets">Bloomberg.</a></strong></li><li><strong>Exhibiting similar problems, a recently delivered Lion Air Boeing 737 Max 8 passenger plane crashed into the sea off Jakarta, Indonesia almost two weeks ago with 189 people onboard.</strong></li><li><strong>The warning comes as Indonesia's transport ministry has scheduled a briefing to share the latest information on the Lion Air tragedy.</strong></li></ul><p>Boeing is reportedly preparing a bulletin to all operators of the new 737 model warning that erroneous readings from a flight-monitoring system can cause the planes to aggressively dive, Bloomberg quoted a person familiar with the matter.</p><p><span>Boeing will caution its customers of "erroneous readings" from a flight-monitoring system can cause the planes to abruptly dive, Bloomberg quoted an anonymous source as saying.</span></p><p><span>Boeing will also warn pilots to follow an existing procedure to handle the problem.</span></p><p>The bulletin is being prepared based on preliminary findings from the crash of one of the planes off the coast of Indonesia, said the person, who asked not to be named discussing the inquiry.</p><p><span>According to a company statement as of September 30</span><span>, Boeing had 4,783 firm orders from 98 identified customers for the 737 Max.</span></p><p><span>According to Bloomberg there are over 200 737 Max jets already in use in commercial aviation.</span></p><p><span>Aviation expert Geoffrey Thomas told Business Insider that Boeing has around 9,000 737s in the sky at any given time.</span></p><p><span>Representatives of 737 Max operators, Singapore Airlines offshoot SilkAir, Garuda Indonesia and Canada's WestJet, said they had not yet received a bulletin from Boeing, Reuters reports.</span><span><br /></span></p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com.au/lion-air-black-box-problem-airspeed-indicator-2018-11?r=UK&amp;IR=T">Data from the black box</a> of the Lion Air 737 Max that fell into the sea with 189 people onboard has confirmed there was an issue with the plane's airspeed indicator.</p><p>Soerjanto Tjahjono, the head of Indonesia's National <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation">Transportation</keyword> Safety Committee, said on Monday that the flight data recorder from the crashed plane shows that the problem occurred in its last four flights, including the fatal flight on October 29.</p><p>Without an accurate airspeed reading, planes are at serious risk of crashing. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The main theory to explain the crash this week of the Germanwings jet in France has shifted to suicide by the co-pilot.</p><p>Authorities investigating the crash had already noted that the Airbus A320's relatively slow descent from cruising altitude - it took about 8 minutes - was strange.</p><p>Additional information pointing to an intentional act then emerged.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">On Thursday, a prosecutor in <span>Marseille said that</span> the German co-pilot appears to have crashed the plane deliberately, Reuters reported. He was left in sole control of </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">the aircraft after the captain left the cockpit but refused to re-open the door and pressed a button that sent the jet into its fatal descent, the prosecutor told a news conference carried on live television.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Various outlets have reported that the pilot first tapped gently on the cockpit door, then pounded, then tried to break the door down gain to access to the cockpit as the plane descended.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Passengers place tremendous confidence in airline pilots. In the Germanwings case, the two men in the cockpit were responsible for 150 people, all of whom died instantly when the plane hit a mountainside in the French Alps at over 400 mph. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Pilot suicides in commercial aviation are exceptionally rare. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">However, there have been three incidents in the past 30 years in which suicide was blamed for a crash - and one had eerie similarities to the circumstance that are now being discussed in connection with the Germanwings tragedy.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In 2013, a Mozambique Airlines went down in Namibia, with 27 passengers and crew on board. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2014/03/11/just-how-common-are-pilot-suicides/">According to a Washington Post story</a> on pilot suicides in the aftermath of the the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight 370, the Mozambique co-pilot "left to use the bathroom, and when he returned, he found the door shut."</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>The Post report continued: "Inside, the pilot had switched the plane's altitude reading from 38,000 feet to ground level, </span><a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/%22http://www.ibtimes.com/pilot-suicide-when-its-captain-who-crashes-plane-1519756/%22">IBT reports</a><span>. Recordings show someone pounded on the door to the cockpit as the plane plummeted. Investigators later concluded the plane had crashed because of '</span><a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/%22http://news.aviation-safety.net/2013/12/22/list-of-aircraft-accidents-caused-by-pilot-suicide//%22">intentional actions by the pilot.'"</a></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>In 1997, SilkAir Flight 185, a Boeing 737, went down in Indonesia. All 97 passengers and 7 crew died. <span>Pilot suicide emerged as the dominant theory to explain the incident.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In 1999, EgyptAir flight 990, a Boeing 767 flying from New York to Cairo, crashed in the Atlantic, killing 217 people. Pilot suicides are uncommon, but there have been several in the past 30 years

<p><span class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><span><span data-post-image="" class="image on-image"></span><p></p></span></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">AirAsia is the world's best low-cost airline, according to the aviation ratings agency Skytrax. </span>The a<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">irline's long-haul subsidiary AirAsiaX also finished second on the list. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Now gaining negative attention worldwide after the disappearance of <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">AirAsia flight 8501</span>, AirAsia has in fact topped the Skytrax ratings six years in a row. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">That's quite an achievement for an airline that was on the brink failure little more than a decade ago.&#xa0;</span></p>
<p><span>The man at the heart of the airline's spectacular rise is its charismatic CEO Tony Fernandes.&#xa0;</span></p>
<p>Before AirAsia became a multibillion-dollar aviation juggernaut, it was a small, struggling airline owned by the Malaysian Government.</p>
<p>It consisted of nothing more than two aging Boeing 737 jets, 250 employees, and one route. Not to mention $40 million of debt.&#xa0;</p>
<p>Together with several partners, Fernandes took control of AirAsia from the Malaysian government in December 2001. He paid 29 cents and assumed the airline's massive liabilities.</p>
<p>Fernandes, then a 37-year-old music executive, had absolutely no aviation experience to speak of, but he did understand entrepreneurship and the leisure and entertainment market in Southeast Asia.</p>
<p>Born in Malaysia and educated at the London School of Economics, Fernandes began his career at Richard Branson's Virgin Communications in the mid-1980s. He rose to the position of financial controller before moving to Warner Music International's London operation in 1989. Fernandes was chosen to lead Warner's operation in Malaysia as its managing director before being put in charge of its whole Southeast Asia division.&#xa0;</p>
<p class="center"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><span><span data-post-image="" class="image on-image"></span><p></p></span></span></span></p>
<p class="center"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Taking a cue from Southwest Airlines, Fernandes built his airline on cheap fares, quality service, and quick turnarounds for its planes.</span></p>
<p>The airline quickly <a href="http://www.airasia.com/my/en/about-us/ir-annual-reports.page" target="_blank">reached profitability</a>&#xa0;and remained in the black.&#xa0;</p>
<p>The Kuala Lumpur-based AirAsia - together with its subsidiaries in Indonesia, India, Thailand, and the Philippines - now operates a fleet of more than 160 Airbus A320 and A330 series jets transporting more than 230 million passengers per year.</p>
<p>The airline had fewer than 300 employees in 2001. It now has more than 15,000.</p>
<p>Fernandes didn't stop with AirAsia. The airline is just one piece of his sprawling Tune Group, which includes a line of trendy no-frills hotels in Asia and the UK, along with investments in professional basketball and the Caterham Formula One racing team.&#xa0;</p>
<p>"What does the market want? Nine times out of 10, when you go for what the market wants, it's something that's different," <a href="http://knowledge.insead.edu/leadership-management/strategy/ceo-view-tony-fernandes-of-airasia-2108" target="_blank">Fernandes told INSEAD Business School's Knowledge publication</a>&#xa0;in 2007. "But we weren't the first to invent low-cost travel, we weren't the first to invent a low-cost hotel."</p>
<p>"We've taken it to another level, but we've been a bit Japanese in taking it, and adapting it, and making it better for our part of the world," Fernandes added.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span class="KonaFilter image-container display-table center"><span><span data-post-image="" class="image on-image"></span><p></p></span></span>AirAsia may have adapted an existing business model, but it has revolutionized the way people travel in Southeast Asia. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In a marketplace traditionally dominated by regional powers like Singapore, Thai, and Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia's rise to prominence has left the aviation establishment scrambling to compete in the short-haul business. &#xa0;</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">While all three national airlines have remained highly rated for their service, their financial stability has been shaken by an influx of low-cost upstarts, led by AirAsia. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Singapore has taken a proactive approach by launching budget subsidiaries: SilkAir and Scoot.&#xa0;</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Malaysia Airlines may be AirAsia's biggest victim. Even before the tragic disappearance of MH370 and shooting down of MH17 this year, Malaysia Airlines has been struggling. The airline's regional business has been decimated; the national airline's more traditional business structure hasn't been able to cope with AirAsia's lean, mean strategy.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">With the disappearance of AirAsia flight 8501, the airline and its charismatic leader will face their greatest challenge to date. The probable tragic loss of the flight may be a turning point in the airline's story. But given Fernandes' track record, AirAsia should be up to the task.</span></p>

<p>The first concrete, verified lead as to the possible reason behind the disappearance has fuelled speculation over how and why MH370 might have been commandeered - and its likely fate.</p>
<p>Here are some of the possible scenarios being weighed up by experts.</p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">- THEORY: Terror attack -</span></strong></p>
<p>WHY: As the theory that the plane was deliberately taken over gains traction, questions over the involvement of terrorist organisations have come back to the fore.</p>
<p>The presence of two passengers traveling on stolen passports fuelled early fears of a terror link.</p>
<p>Authorities now believe the two Iranian men were simply illegal migrants, but CIA director John Brennan has said a terror attack has not been ruled out.</p>
<p>The search area covers a massive region -- a northern corridor from the border of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan through northern Thailand and a southern corridor from Indonesia to the southern Indian Ocean -- with no potential target or destination pinpointed so far.</p>
<p>EXPERT VIEW: The extensive inside information and expertise needed to commandeer a plane for hours without detection would need an unprecedented level of pre-planning, says Gerry Soejatman, a Jakarta-based independent aviation analyst.</p>
<p>"If that was deliberate, we may be dealing with something beyond the mission planning for 9/11," he said.</p>
<p>While the southern corridor is less monitored, the northern zone would be bristling with radar. Dropping altitude to fly as low as possible would be one way to avoid detection, he said.</p>
<p>But the Malaysia Airlines scenario had too many loose ends for a terror attack, said Adam Dolnik, professor of terrorism studies at the University of Wollongong in Australia.</p>
<p>"Nothing from what I have seen points to that conclusion," he told AFP.</p>
<p>"For something this big, you would have somebody claiming it."</p>
<p><strong>- THEORY: Pilot involvement -</strong></p>
<p>WHY: With Malaysia confirming that communications were likely switched off manually, pilot involvement -- whether intentional or under duress -- is a possibility, some experts say.</p>
<p>EXPERT VIEW: "For me there's only a few scenarios," says Paul Yap, aviation lecturer at Temasek Polytechnic in Singapore.</p>
<p>"First, the people involved in the deliberate actions...are the pilots, one of them or both of them in cahoots.</p>
<p>"Then we have a scenario where terrorists make the pilots change course and switch off the transponders under duress, maybe threatening to kill of the passengers.</p>
<p>"Or, we could have a scenario where the security protocol surrounding the cockpit is compromised."</p>
<p>Passengers have been prohibited from entering the cockpit during a flight after the 9/11 attacks on the United States.</p>
<p>"It's certainly someone who knew what they were doing," said Chris De Lavigne, a vice president at business consultancy Frost &amp; Sullivan.</p>
<p>"It could be the pilot, the crew, it could be passengers."</p>
<p>Malaysia Airlines has said it was "shocked" over a TV report that MH370 co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid had, along with another pilot, allowed two women into the cockpit on a flight in 2011.</p>
<p><strong>- THEORY: Pilot suicide -</strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">WHY: While rare, there have been cases of pilots crashing planes to take their own lives. In December 1997, a SilkAir Boeing 737 from Jakarta to Singapore plunged into a river in Indonesia with the loss of 104 passengers and crew. US investigators blamed pilot suicide.</span></p>
<p>EXPERT VIEW: A suicide bid "is possible and if that's the case there might not be a lot of debris because the plane would have come down in relative structural integrity", said Terence Fan, aviation expert at Singapore Management University.</p>
<p>"The airplane is not meant to float and if the airplane sinks in the water, water will go inside because the door seals are not meant to seal water."</p>
<p>Nothing has emerged to suggest any serious psychological problems with either of the pilots who were flying MH370.</p>
<p><strong>- THEORY: The plane landed and is hidden -</strong></p>
<p>WHY: The lack of debris and apparent absence of any data indicating impact have led to speculation that the plane may have landed safely and be hidden in a remote location.</p>
<p>EXPERT VIEW: The size of the Boeing 777 and the amount of space needed for it to land make it unlikely that this was the flight's fate, says Greg Waldron, Asia managing editor at industry publication Flightglobal.</p>
<p>"The triple seven is a very large aircraft that requires a long airport-size runway to land... it's possible, but I think not probable."</p>
<p>But Yap believes that if those controlling the flight were skilled enough to evade military radar, "that person should most likely be able to land it safely as well".</p>
<p>"Evidence of deliberate action does open several new leads - including the possibility that the aircraft is not lost at sea," said London-based David Kaminski-Morrow, air transport editor for Flight International.</p>
<p>Soejatman added that most flights have enough fuel to cover an additional two hours in the air so, given the latest data, MH370 would have been close to running out.</p>
<p><strong>- THEORY: Cover up -</strong></p>
<p>WHY: The apparent slowness to reveal key radar data has led to speculation that countries may know more about the plane's likely whereabouts, but are unwilling to share due to a perceived security risk.</p>
<p>EXPERT VIEW: The latest information on the plane's route poses more questions than it answers over how it remained undetected, says Soejatman.</p>
<p>"If it went through the northern corridor, it would have passed through so many countries. But why hasn't anybody detected it and said anything?</p>
<p>"It's extremely different to comprehend that so many countries might have seen it and kept it under wraps."</p>
<p>A path through the remoter southern corridor would explain a lack of radar coverage, but would bring the motive into doubt, he said.</p>
<p>"It is amazing that an airplane -- and not a little airplane -- could fly so far, over multiple overlapping jurisdictions, without being detected," Ajai Sahni, executive director of India's Institute for Conflict Management, a Delhi-based think-tank, told AFP.</p>
<p>"It makes one wonder, 'How much are we in control?'"</p>
