"At present, we use AI-based cameras to enforce seven violations," said MN Anucheth, Joint Commissioner of Police (Bengaluru City Traffic) in an interview with <em>Moneycontrol</em>. These violations include overspeeding, using mobile phones while driving, not wearing seat belts, riding without helmets, triple riding on two-wheelers, red-light jumping, and stop-line violations. "We will soon expand to cover 13 types of violations," Anucheth added, hinting at an even more stringent road regime.<br /><h2>Eyes in the sky</h2>With a road network stretching over 14,000 km, more than 12 million registered vehicles, and around 40,000 traffic intersections, Bengaluru’s streets can get chaotic. With the expanded AI system, these numbers are expected to soar even higher. AI is playing a crucial role in optimising <keyword id="21296378" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="traffic-signals" source="keywords">traffic signals</keyword> to reduce congestion and manage traffic patterns. With its Automatic Traffic Counting and Classification (ATCC) feature, these <keyword id="21635811" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="AI-cameras" source="keywords">AI cameras</keyword> will help monitor the types of vehicles clogging up different junctions, offering better insights for road management.<br /><br />To that end, Bengaluru has also introduced AI-powered traffic signals, which automatically adjust the timing of traffic lights based on real-time traffic conditions. This system, deployed across many important junctions in the city, monitors vehicle flow and helps reduce bottlenecks by adjusting traffic lights dynamically. In an ideal world, this will mean that there would be no more sitting at a red light when the road ahead is empty.<br /><br />With over 9,000 cameras being installed across the city under the Safe City project and access to 4,600 body-worn cameras, Bengaluru’s traffic police are bringing in a new era of high-tech enforcement. Encrypted messaging platform <keyword id="19936816" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="signal" source="keywords">Signal</keyword> is launching usernames for chats to keep your phone number private.<br /><br />As a new default, the phone number will no longer be visible to everyone in Signal.<br /><br />"People who have your number saved in their phone's contacts will still see your phone number since they already know it," the company said in a statement.<br /><br />You can now create a unique username that you can use instead (you will still need a phone number to sign up for Signal). <br /><br />"A username is not the profile name that's displayed in chats, it's not a permanent handle, and not visible to the people you are chatting with in Signal. But many investors remained sceptical: was this IPO an honest attempt to expand Hyundai’s footprint in India or was it trying to offer a way to cashout for existing investors and promoters? <br /><br /> Or perhaps, is it an attempt by the Korean chaebol — a large family-owned business conglomerate — to break free from the aforementioned “Korean Discount”?<br /><br /> When shares listed on October 22, these concerns seemingly weighed on the minds of most investors and the stock promptly dipped 5% below the issue price on the day. A tepid grey market performance had already foreshadowed this muted debut in the Indian markets. Now, after almost 35 trading sessions on Indian market, the stock remains almost exactly at price it listed on October 22 at Rs 1820—no gain, no loss.<br /><br /> <b><h3>The gamble of hyper-valuation</h3></b>Much of this hesitation stemmed from Hyundai’s valuation. Since entering the Indian market in 1996, the automaker has sold over 8 million vehicles and firmly occupies the second spot in the domestic passenger vehicle market, trailing only Maruti Suzuki. <ul class="summary-list"><li>China's Xi Jinping negotiated a truce with India's leader, Narendra Modi.</li><li>They agreed to a patrolling arrangement on a disputed Himalayan border.</li></ul><p>At the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-hosts-brics-summit-defy-west-us-economy-china-dollar-2024-10">BRICS summit</a> in Russia this week, China's leader Xi Jinping and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi shook hands for the first time in five years.</p><p>The symbolic moment came after a deal was struck to resolve a long-standing feud between the Asian superpowers.</p><p>In the lead-up to the summit, the countries announced they had reached a patrolling agreement that would reduce tensions along a disputed <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-china-buying-new-light-tanks-for-himalayan-mountain-warfare-2023-6">Himalayan border.</a></p><p>The dispute had led to deadly hand-to-hand combat in recent years, taking the lives of 20 Indian troops and at least four Chinese soldiers.</p><p>After their meeting at the summit hosted by Russia's President Vladimir Putin, Xi and Modi said they would continue discussions on resolving the issue.</p><h2 id="997cee52-7fd6-4283-bf77-94e40a12b5cc">A setback for the US</h2><p>Some analysts believe it is a development that's unlikely to be welcomed in Washington, DC.</p><p>The US has sought to recruit India to help it contain China's growing regional aggression alongside other members of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, a security pact that also includes Japan and Australia.</p><p>"So definitely, this is a setback for the United States of America's Indo-Pacific outlook, given the kind of rapprochement we are seeing in India-China relations, and particularly India, China and Russia coming together," Jagannath Panda, head of the Stockholm Center for South Asian and Indo-Pacific Affairs, told Business Insider.</p><p>"Putin, Xi, and Modi meeting definitely signals that there is a kind of understanding under the carpet that has happened, which is quite subtle," he said.</p><p>It's an assessment echoed by Zhiqun Zhu, professor of political science and international affairs at Bucknell University.</p><p>"The thaw in India-China relations is a boon to both countries. This is particularly significant for China because India may now be less inclined to confront Beijing as part of Quad," Zhu told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.voanews.com/a/india-china-deal-raises-questions-about-us-indo-pacific-strategy-/7838623.html">Voice of America. </a>"In this sense, the effectiveness of Quad would be diluted with a less enthusiastic India."</p><h2 id="baf534cf-4366-41b8-b9ef-d526ffe91fda">Competition between Asia's rival powers intensifies</h2><p>Tensions have been building between China and India for years.</p><p>As the two biggest economies in Asia, the countries have long jostled for regional power, with the dispute over the Himalayan border a flashpoint that led to clashes in 2020, 2021, and 2022.</p><p>Amid the stand-off, Chinese vessels have reportedly surveilled the Indian Ocean in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/india/another-chinese-research-vessel-spotted-off-india-fuelling-unease-2024-03-11/">what experts told Reuters</a> was a likely intelligence-gathering operation, while India has strengthened its security ties with China's chief global rival, the US.</p><p>In 2017 India played a key role in restarting the Quad, an alliance designed as a bulwark against growing Chinese influence and aggression in the Asia-Pacific region.</p><p>But India has long sought to balance its relationship with rival superpowers the US and China, and does not at this point want to tie itself too closely to either side, say analysts.</p><p>In addition to being a member of the Quad Alliance, it is a founding member of the BRICS, an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-economy-asia-countries-flaunt-russia-putin-diplomacy-relationship-brics-2024-9">association of non-Western economies </a>that China has sought to transform into an alternative global economic power base to the US.</p><div type="image" title="India-China border" height="683" width="1024" msid="114594056" hostid="261" sizebytes="158650"></div><p>"This explains why it remains part of multilateral groupings with contradictory goals," said Praveen Donthi, a South Asia analyst with the Eurasia Group in Washington, DC, pointing to both its membership of the US-aligned Quad and China-dominated BRIC group.</p><p>The truce comes with China on the back foot diplomatically, said Panda, pointing to its damaged relations with Europe and the US after its support f<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-and-china-anti-us-coalition-is-growing-more-threatening-2024-9">or Russia's invasion of Ukraine.</a></p><p>"One could draw a conclusion at this point that probably the Chinese are more interested to rebuild the ties with India than the other way round," said Panda.</p><p>He said there's also the possibility that Xi has reached an agreement with Modi behind the scenes for India to remain silent if China acts on its longstanding ambition to seize back control of Taiwan.</p><p>Such a move would likely draw in the US and its other regional allies, who have pledged to help defend<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-taiwan-drone-swarms-uav-us-playing-catch-up-production-2024-10"> Taiwan's independence.</a></p><p>"I think China's bigger ambition and target is the Taiwan issue, and therefore they would not really like to continue the kind of tensions they were engaged in with India for the last three to four years," he said.</p><p>"Therefore, they would like to rebuild, and they would like to ensure that India does not react to the Taiwan issue so sensitively."</p><p>In any case, its a setback in US attempts to include India in a deeper security alliance, he said.</p><p>"For a long time, the US has tried to develop security and defense ties with India," said Panda.</p><p>For the time being, a truce suits both Russian and Chinese interests, Rahul Bhatia, an analyst at the Eurasia Group, said. But, he added, tensions remain.</p><p>He said that though both parties have opened discussions about the border dispute, the underlying problem remains unresolved, and future flare-ups are likely.</p><p>Donthi said the progress between the leaders could also be derailed if tensions between the US and China increase.</p><p>"This comes as a relief after four years of eyeball-to-eyeball troop deployment in the Himalayas. However, it's only the beginning," he said.</p>

Xi undercut the West by negotiating a truce in China's long feud with India

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have been rapidly exiting Indian markets, and this high-speed exodus does not look like it will stop anytime soon. In October 2024, FIIs withdrew Rs 1,14,445.89 crores from Indian markets. Yesterday, FIIs withdrew $770.67 million from the markets, with equity outflows of $440.86 million and debt outflows standing at $327.44 million across various categories. Per NSDL data, hybrid outflows amounted to $2.31 million.<br /><br /> While this may sound dissuading at first, a recent SBI report underlined that FIIs still hold a massive $ 18.241 billion in Indian markets. So far, FY25 has seen FII inflows worth $ 8.924 billion. <br /><br /> However, the situation may quickly turn alarming as well, given that FII holdings in Indian equities have already come down to a 12-year low. Says Anirudh Garg, Partner and Fund Manager at Invasset PMS, "The current valuation of Indian stocks, trading at around 24 times expected earnings, appears high compared to Chinese stocks, which are at approximately 10 times. Economic concerns, including weak corporate earnings and declining consumer demand, further exacerbate this situation. Additionally, renewed fears of inflation and potential monetary tightening by central banks have led FIIs to withdraw from the Indian market." <br /><br /> In the meantime, DIIs (domestic institutional investors) are stepping in big time. During October 2024, DIIs infused Rs 1,07,254.68 crore in Indian markets. In November so far, DIIs have been keeping the fund momentum going, infusing Rs 12,265.74 crore in India, while FIIs have offloaded Rs 16,445.49 crore this month.<br /><br />But despite this strong uptick, SBI's recent report suggests that consumer confidence in India remains below 100, signaling muted positivity and optimism in the economy. While household consumption is gradually recovering, it grew at 4% last year, much below the 7% levels recorded pre-pandemic. <br /><br /> <h2>FII share in <keyword id="20868945" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE-listed-companies" source="keywords">NSE-listed companies</keyword> takes a dip, DII stake rise<br /></h2>FIIs share in NSE-listed companies stood at 15.98% in October, with assets under their custody in the equity segment coming to Rs 71.08 lakh crore last month. In September, this stood at Rs 77.96 crore. Experts suggest that this is likely to continue for some time to come. <br /><br />Mutual funds, on the other hand, saw their share in NSE-listed companies hit a record high of 9.58%, as opposed to their 9.32% stake in September 2024. <br /><br />FIIs turned net sellers in the debt segment as well in October, dumping $771 million in Indian markets. This comes after 2 consecutive months of healthy inflows in this segment in August and September 2024, where the figures stood at $2,806 million and $2,295 million, respectively. <br />

I tested the Titanium Silver colour variant, which I think is the best among the three options.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="PXL_20240825_105244230" msid="113520433" hostid="261" sizebytes="65724" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra strap&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />The Titanium Silver colour variant comes with a Dark Grey strap. You can easily replace the strap on the Galaxy Watch Ultra thanks to the dynamic lug, allowing you to get different straps. This also means that you cannot use your older straps with the watch.<br /><br />The Galaxy Watch Ultra is the largest among the smartwatches sold by the company at 47mm. Considering the display and the battery size, the watch is on the heavier side at 60.5 grams.<br /><br />Despite being packed with features and offering a durable design, the Galaxy Watch Ultra at 12.1mm is thinner than the Apple Watch Ultra.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="Design" msid="113520482" hostid="261" sizebytes="63856" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra design&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />The Galaxy Watch Ultra has a circular face and is placed in a squarish design with rounded corners. While I was a bit sceptical of the design during the launch, it looks quite good when you actually wear it. It sits well on the hand and makes a separate place for itself in a market filled with circular smartwatches for Android devices.<br /><br />The smartwatch comes with a highly durable case built using Titanium Grade 4 that gives it a premium look and feel. It comes with a matte finish, preventing fingerprint smudges and dust build-up.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="b" msid="113520505" hostid="261" sizebytes="66228" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra design&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br /><br />In line with its rugged characteristics, the smartwatch comes with 10ATM water resistance and an IP68 water and dust rating. The quick action button is quite handy and can be set to perform various actions such as opening the exercise menu, opening the stopwatch, torch and more.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="Speaker" msid="113521024" hostid="261" sizebytes="29576" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Speaker on the left side&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />The watch comes with speakers on the right side and a microphone on the left side between the buttons.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="Display" msid="113520455" hostid="261" sizebytes="50078" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra display&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />The Galaxy Watch Ultra features a 1.5-inch Super AMOLED always-on-display. It comes with Sapphire glass protection and offers a peak brightness of 3000 nits, ensuring excellent outdoor visibility.<br /><br />The watch is durable and I did not notice a single scratch during my usage.<br /><br /><h2>Software and app</h2>The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra runs on WearOS with One UI 6 Watch on top. This is basically WearOS with Samsung’s tweaks on top. The watch can be connected and managed using the Galaxy Wearable app, which is easy to use. To track your health and activities, you need to download the Samsung Health app.<br /><br />Like any WearOS or Samsung watch, the interface on the Galaxy Watch Ultra is smooth and easy to use. You can install applications from the Play Store and use them on the watch.<br /><br />You get a ton of watch faces and customisation options to choose from. If you aren’t happy with these, you also have the option to download more from the Play Store.<br /><br />The Galaxy Watch Ultra comes with its own watch face, offering a red-coloured night mode.<br /><br />Like most gadgets these days, the watch also comes with AI baked in, allowing you to quickly reply to messages and more.<br /><br />One issue that I faced with the watch is that for some important features such as taking an electrocardiogram (ECG) or getting a blood pressure report, you will need to connect to a Samsung smartphone. These features are not available on other Android smartphones.<br /><br /><h2>Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra features and performance</h2>The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra is powered by the Exynos W1000 chipset, equipped with a 5-core CPU, which is claimed to offer nearly four times better performance than its predecessor, along with 30% improved power efficiency. The chipset is paired with 2GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage.<br /><br />The Galaxy Watch Ultra comes with a new Siren feature, allowing you to hold down the Action Button to enable a loud siren, which can come in handy during emergencies.<br /><br />Samsung has packed the device with features and offers a ton of health tracking sensors. It comes with a new Samsung BioActive Sensor, which includes an optical bio-signal sensor, electrical heart signal and bioelectrical impedance analysis sensor.<br /><br />The watch also comes with an optical heart rate sensor, a temperature sensor, a light sensor, a geomagnetic sensor and more.<br /><br />For positioning, the Galaxy Watch Ultra comes with L1+LG dual-frequency GPS, offering improved accuracy.<br /><br />The watch accurately offers activity and fitness tracking, making it a great option for those looking for accurate activity tracking in a smartwatch.<br /><br />The watch was also accurately able to track my sleep patterns, along with blood oxygen during sleep, skin temperature, heart rate and respiratory rate. If you track your sleep regularly for seven days, it starts offering more insights about your sleep patterns and also offers recommendations.<br /><br />Another area where Samsung has deployed AI is to determine your energy score. It uses aspects such as sleep time and activity to help you determine your energy levels for the day. It also offers suggestions if any particular thing needs your attention.<br /><br />One of the key health metrics that the watch offers is ECG and BP tracking.<br /><br />The watch offers alerts for abnormally high or low heart rates and can detect irregular heart rhythms that can indicate atrial fibrillation.<br /><br />The Galaxy Watch Ultra is powered by a 590mAh battery, which is claimed to offer up to 100 hours of battery life with workout detection in power-saving mode.<br /><br />With AOD and regular HR tracking enabled, I managed to squeeze out nearly three days of battery life from the device, which is quite good.<br /><br />Samsung has offered a wireless magnetic charger with the watch and it does not work with regular wireless chargers. It takes nearly 2 hours to charge, so you need to plan accordingly.<br /><br /><h2>Verdict</h2>The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra is a feature-packed watch and is the only such option in the market. While watches from Garmin are packed with health tracking features, they lack the OS that Samsung offers and are not as fun to use.<br /><br />The Galaxy Watch Ultra ticks all the right boxes, including a vibrant display, durable design, excellent health and activity tracking and a decent battery life. India’s diamond industry is grappling with a severe downturn as both imports and exports have significantly declined over the past three years, triggering defaults, <keyword id="23043782" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="factory-closures" source="keywords">factory closures</keyword>, and widespread <keyword id="20013745" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="job-losses" source="keywords">job losses</keyword>, according to a report by the Global Trade Research Initiative (<keyword id="19962754" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GTRI" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="GTRI" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="GTRI">GTRI</keyword>). The think tank highlighted that the sector is struggling with unsold <keyword id="20237406" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rough-diamonds" source="keywords">rough diamonds</keyword> and increasing competition from lab-grown alternatives.<br /><br />Ajay Srivastava, Founder of GTRI, pointed out that the downturn in India’s diamond industry has had devastating effects. "This has led to defaults, factory closures, and widespread job losses. Tragically, more than 60 individuals from Gujarat’s diamond sector have taken their own lives, highlighting the intense financial and emotional stress," Srivastava said. He emphasised the urgent need for intervention to address these issues and ensure the survival of the sector.<br /><h2>Declining imports and exports</h2>Data from GTRI paints a grim picture of the industry. Imports of rough diamonds have dropped by 24.5%, from USD 18.5 billion in 2021-22 to USD 14 billion in 2023-24, reflecting weakened global demand and fewer orders for diamond processing. After accounting for re-exported rough diamonds, net imports saw a 25.3% decrease, signalling reduced interest in processing diamonds in India.<br /><br />The situation is even worse on the export front. Exports of cut and polished diamonds fell by 34.6%, from USD 24.4 billion in FY 2022 to USD 13.1 billion in FY 2024. Net exports experienced an even sharper decline, dropping by 45.3% from USD 15.9 billion to USD 8.7 billion, indicating a weak global market and rising inventories of unsold diamonds.<br /><h2>Rising inventories and market competition</h2>The report also highlighted that the percentage of unsold diamonds returned to India increased from 35% to 45.6% during this period. Additionally, the gap between net rough diamond imports and net exports of cut and polished diamonds widened from USD 1.6 billion in FY 2022 to USD 4.4 billion in FY 2024, signifying a growing stockpile of unsold inventory and insufficient export demand.<br /><br />Several factors contribute to this crisis. Global economic uncertainty, inflation, and geopolitical tensions — particularly in key markets like the US, China, and Europe — have led to decreased spending on luxury items such as diamonds. Fluctuating global diamond prices have added to this uncertainty, causing buyers to hesitate in purchasing rough diamonds.<br /><div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113445065" title="&amp;#39;The pressure became too much for her&amp;#39;: Mother blames &amp;#39;work stress&amp;#39; for 26-year-old EY employee&amp;#39;s death" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>Moreover, the Russia-Ukraine conflict has disrupted the global diamond supply chain, with sanctions on Russia, a major producer of rough diamonds, further complicating trade. This slowdown has impacted the global market, stalling the flow of diamonds and affecting India’s processing sector.<br /><br />Another challenge facing the industry is the shift in consumer preferences toward <keyword id="20662742" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lab-grown-diamonds" source="keywords">lab-grown diamonds</keyword>, which are seen as more affordable, ethical, and sustainable. This shift is particularly evident in markets where customers are becoming more conscious of the environmental and ethical implications of their purchases.<br /><h2>Internal regulatory and operational hurdles</h2>Internally, the Indian diamond sector is facing a host of challenges. Many polishing units are burdened with unsold inventories of polished diamonds, discouraging them from importing new rough diamonds. Rising operational costs, including labour, energy, and materials, have also made it difficult for many polishing units to remain profitable. These factors have led to the closure of many shops and significant layoffs, particularly in Surat, the world’s largest hub for diamond cutting and polishing.<br /><br />The sector's heavy reliance on financing has also become a problem. Tighter credit conditions and reduced lending from banks have made it increasingly difficult for businesses to purchase rough diamonds, further stalling production. Additionally, a significant number of cut and polished diamonds exported from India are being returned due to quality issues, overstocking, and price fluctuations, creating costly delays and adding to the strain on exporters.<br /><h2>Dubai's rising influence</h2>An interesting development highlighted by GTRI is the increasing share of rough diamond imports from Dubai, which does not produce diamonds itself. Instead, Dubai imports diamonds from countries like Botswana, Angola, South Africa, and Russia and re-exports them to India. Dubai’s share in India’s rough diamond imports surged from 36.3% in FY 2020 to 60.8% in FY 2024, further rising to 64.5% in April-June 2024. In contrast, Belgium’s share of these imports fell from 37.9% in FY 2020 to 17.6% in FY 2024.<br />One major reason for Dubai's increasing role is India’s high corporate tax regime, which pushes foreign suppliers of rough diamonds to re-export their diamonds to Dubai before sending them to India. This has rendered India’s Special Notified Zones (SNZs) in Mumbai and Surat largely ineffective.<br /><h2>Revitalising the sector</h2>To help revitalise the struggling sector, GTRI has proposed several measures. These include extending export credit terms, exempting foreign rough diamond sellers from corporate taxes in India, regulating the lab-grown diamond industry, and reconsidering the zero-tariff import of cut and polished diamonds from Dubai under the India-UAE trade agreement.<br /><br />The think tank also suggested that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) extend the export credit period for cut and polished diamond exporters from six months to 12 months, as buyers are increasingly demanding longer credit terms. India’s strong foreign exchange reserves make this feasible.<br /><div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113449316" title="Small businesses generated 35 million job applications till Aug 2024, 14 million were from women: Report" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>The Indian diamond industry, which consists of over 7,000 companies — many of them small or medium enterprises — provides direct employment to about 1.3 million workers, with Surat alone employing nearly 8,00,000 people.
