Hurricane Milton slams into Florida, the latest blow to homeowners already reeling from Helene's destruction

Don't "charge, drive, or store your EV or E-bike in your home or garage,"the post said. It recommended they "move the EV or E-bike 50 feet away from any other combustible material" and "have the vehicle towed to a dealership for inspection."Florida officials said on Tuesday that they had <a target="_blank" href="https://myfloridacfo.com/news/pressreleases/press-release-details/2024/10/02/fire-safety-alert-cfo---state-fire-marshal-jimmy-patronis--lithium-ion-batteries-are-ticking-time-bombs-in-wake-of-hurricane-helene">since confirmed 16 lithium-ion-battery fires</a> related to Hurricane Helene's storm surge, six of which were in EVs. Ron DeSantis</a> did before Helene arrived) and about what to do if an EV is flooded."It's not too late for these manufacturers to send out notifications and fire safety information directly to their consumers," Patronis said in a statement, adding that his office was coordinating with emergency responders to make residents aware of the risks.The warnings come at a critical time for the EV industry. Consumer demand for EVs has been slower than expected this year, and Republicans including <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jd-vance-elon-musk-tesla-electric-vehicle-tax-credit-oil-2024-7">JD Vance have attacked the industry</a> in the run-up to the presidential election in November. J.D. Power has forecast that EVs will account for 9% of the market this year — a figure the group <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jdpower.com/business/resources/jd-power-revises-ev-retail-share-forecast">revised down from 12% because of slower adoption</a>. Surveys have suggested that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-charging-range-improving-americans-still-dont-want-electric-cars-2024-9">Americans are a lot more concerned about finding chargers</a> than safety, but viral videos of EV fires could fuel skepticism.Brent Gruber, the executive director of J.D. Power's electric-vehicle practice, told Business Insider that because of the recent fires, his team planned to begin tracking consumers' concern about EV fires.Some data from the Transportation Department and Tesla suggests EVs catch fire less often than hybrid or gas-powered cars on the road or in crashes. Saltwater storm surges during Hurricanes Ida, Ian, and now Helene pose a risk to lithium-ion batteries, but it's not clear how often EV fires occur during extreme weather events.A spokesperson for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said its data on vehicle fires was limited to fires after fatal crashes. The agency said that since Hurricane Ian struck Florida in 2022, it has monitored reports of EV fires during coastal storms in the southeastern and northeastern US and in California. It said reports of EV fires resulting from saltwater flooding came only from Florida."More research is underway to better understand the interaction of high-voltage battery systems and saltwater immersion," the spokesperson said. They added that the agency had proposed updating some safety requirements for EV batteries to reduce the risk of these fires.Albert Gore, the executive director of the Zero Emission Transportation Association, which represents EV makers like Tesla and Rivian, told Business Insider that manufacturers had done a lot of outreach over the past decade to local fire departments about EV-battery safety. He emphasized that the fires seemed to be limited to coastal regions where saltwater storm surge is a risk and argued that EVs in general are much less likely to catch fire than gas-powered vehicles."The most important piece of information to communicate is if you live in an area where there's a risk of hurricanes and storm surge, it's really important to move that vehicle to higher ground," Gore said.Several fire departments along Florida's coastline told Business Insider that they'd been <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-vehicle-fires-what-to-know-2023-11">educating their emergency responders</a> and the public about how to prevent and put out EV fires since Hurricane Ian in 2022.Kelsey Grentzer, a spokesperson for the government in Pinellas County, which covers St. Petersburg and Clearwater, said that so far during Hurricane Helene, emergency responders in the county had been called out to at least 93 vehicle fires. Grentzer said they were still analyzing the breakdown of how many were gas cars versus EVs.Heather Mazurkiewicz, a spokesperson for the North Collier Fire Control and Rescue District, which covers Naples, didn't have an exact figure for Helene but said the district had been taking the problem seriously."There's no predictability as to how or when a fire will start from the battery compartment. They're extremely volatile," Mazurkiewicz said.Even after an EV battery fire appears to be extinguished, lingering stored energy can cause what's known as a "thermal runaway," a cycle of overheating and over-pressurizing. Putting out the battery fire can require more than 10,0000 gallons of water, Mazurkiewicz added.The volatility was on display in the Pinellas County officials' viral video. The EV owners <a target="_blank" href="https://www.fox13news.com/news/electric-vehicle-catches-fire-garage-destroys-home-during-hurricane-helene">told a local Fox affiliate</a> that they narrowly escaped their home in Siesta Key as it became engulfed in flames and that they didn't know that a small amount of flooding could ignite the EV.

People who adhered to the lifestyle's emphasis on rest, exercise, and socializing with friends in particular had a lower risk of dying from <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.insider.com/mediterranean-diet-lower-heart-disease-risk-women-study-2023-3">cardiovascular disease</a>.The team looked at the results of questionnaires filled out by 110,799 people aged between 40 and 75 from a population-based study called the UK Biobank. The participants were scored according to whether they followed a Mediterranean-style diet; how they ate, such as limiting salt or drinking healthy beverages; as well as their social habits and how much they exercised and rested.Nine years later, 4,247 of the participants had died, 2,401 from cancer and 731 from cardiovascular disease.The researchers found that those who'd followed the Mediterranean lifestyle most closely, and particularly the third category, had the lowest risk of death.Lead researcher Dr. Mercedes Sotos-Prieto, a nutrition epidemiologist at the Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain, and adjunct professor at Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, told Insider that the Mediterranean lifestyle is "a traditional and cultural healthy way of living."Sotos-Prieto said people should try to follow the Mediterranean lifestyle in a way that aligns with their own cultures."This study suggests that it's possible for non-Mediterranean populations to adopt the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.insider.com/greek-nutritionist-shares-favorite-mediterranean-diet-recipes-2023-7">Mediterranean diet</a> using locally available products and to adopt the overall Mediterranean lifestyle within their own cultural contexts," he said.<h2>How you eat could be as important as what you eat</h2>While the Mediterranean diet is made up mostly of particular foods and cooking habits — seasoning meals with spices rather than excess salt, for example — the study suggests that how the food is consumed is as important as what it is.Meals are enjoyed with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-be-a-better-friend-according-to-scientific-study-2023-1">family and friends</a>, and the conviviality and social aspect are a key feature of the lifestyle, Sotos-Prieto said.Keeping active is also seen through the lens of community, often being something people do together, such as a walk with friends, he said.Resting also appears to be key, with many Mediterranean countries favoring a short mid-afternoon nap or "siesta" as well as prioritizing sleeping six to eight hours a night."All those items have been shown to be related to cardiovascular disease; however, this study assesses the association of all of them in an all-inclusive Mediterranean Lifestyle index, as a better way to evaluate the synergy among all of them and a way of living," Sotos-Prieto said.

It officially seems like the time to campaign for that trip to Hawaii, as it nabbed seven of the top ten spots. Florida and South Carolina were the only other two states that made the top ten. 
The winning beaches were determined based on the quality and quantity of traveler reviews on TripAdvisor over a 12-month period.

"We had a strategic blueprint that was really built around, how do we create surround sound over a long period of time, so that when we do launch the show on linear, we're successful."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div><h2>Selling nostalgia</h2>When MTV premiered "The Hills: New Beginnings" in June, for example, Parkes and her marketing team started planting seeds about the franchise's return in audiences minds about 10 months out, when members of the original cast reunited at the <a href="https://www.eonline.com/news/961680/the-hills-cast-reunites-at-the-2018-mtv-video-music-awards">MTV Video Music Awards to announce the revival</a>.Parkes had identified three key audiences for the revival of "The Hills," a reality-TV series about a group of affluent young adults living in California, which originally aired from 2006 to 2010. She targeted fans of "The Hills" who still watched MTV, fans who were no longer watching the network, and people who may have been too young or old to see the original series but enjoy similar programming."We call them social Sophies," Parkes said of this last group. "They like to be a part of the social conversation. They like fashion, dating, reality TV ... We sized up each one of those targets, and then we strategically identified how we could connect with them."The announcement at the MTV Video Music Awards spoke to fans who were still watching MTV. The network cultivated them further by airing marathons of the show leading up to the June 24 premiere, and launching a pop-up channel on Viacom's free, streaming-TV service Pluto TV, which played episodes of "The Hills" and its predecessor series "Laguna Beach" around the clock.&#xa0;Parkes pursued through social media and other platforms fans of "The Hills" who had ceased watching MTV. The show's stars promoted the series on their social accounts. In one example, MTV partnered with Amazon's Alexa voice assistant to have "The Hills" star Audrina Patridge answer questions from users about what they should wear in the morning.<h2>Reaching the 'social Sophies'</h2>On social media, MTV highlighted quintessential moments from the original series, and looked for emotional pulls that might resonate with people, even if they hadn't seen the show.&#xa0;"We tapped into emotional truisms that enabled us to connect with people on a much deeper level," Parkes said.For those "social Sophies," who weren't familiar with "The Hills," Parkes had to get more creative. Her team worked with the social music app, Smule, and artist Natasha Bedingfield to perform the show's theme song, "Unwritten," on the platform, where people could sing along.During the week ahead of the premiere, a group of young men who were almost certainly too young to have watched "The Hills" when it first aired, got in on the challenge. Their video went viral on Twitter with more than 26,000 likes and 90,000 retweets.&#xa0;&#xa0;When "The Hills: New Beginnings" premiered on June 24, it became 2019's <a href="https://www.thewrap.com/the-hills-revival-marks-second-highest-rated-cable-premiere-of-2019-among-young-adults/">second highest live-and-same-day cable TV debut</a> among MTV's core 18- to 34-year-old demographic. It followed another MTV revival, a dating spinoff of "Jersey Shore," called "Double Shot at Love with DJ Pauly D and Vinny."The first metric Parkes looks at for any show on TV is the percentage of the audience that watched who had never seen the show before. A healthy benchmark is 10% to 12%, she said. For the premiere of "The Hills," it was 24% - close to the 25% the "Jersey Shore: Family Vacation" spinoff had.&#xa0;Ratings of "The Hills: New Beginnings" have slipped since launch, but the show still routinely ranks among the <a href="https://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/daily-ratings/monday-cable-ratings-july-22-2019/">top 25 most watched cable shows</a> among 18- to 49-year-olds on Monday nights.Parkes is now applying "The Hills" formula to the upcoming reboot of "Making the Band," which originally aired on MTV from 2002 to 2004. Star Sean "Diddy" Combs kicked off promotions by <a href="https://www.instagram.com/tv/Bz8f24-nHv4/?utm_source=ig_embed">announcing the return on his Instagram account</a> on July 15. And MTV is holding <a href="https://www.smule.com/listen/%23mtbcasting-highlights!/481">casting auditions</a> for the series on Smule.<h2>Digging into the data</h2>Parkes, who joined MTV in the spring of 2016, shortly before McCarthy took over as president of the network in the fall, said that a lot of the audience targeting the marketing team is doing stems from the data-oriented mindset McCarthy introduced."He gets the art and science like no one I've ever seen in entertainment," Parkes said, crediting McCarthy's Wharton business school background for that talent. "We do a lot of data and analytics on every element of what we do."Parkes works closely with Viacom's research arm, run by Colleen Fahey Rush, to identify the target audiences for each show and where best to reach them. "We do micro-market media buying," Parkes said.&#xa0;The marketing team may notice, for instance, that "Jersey Shore" is popular with viewers in New Haven, Connecticut, and then work with the research team to pinpoint 10 look-alike markets around the country to buy media for the show in. Of course, the habits have proved to take individuals to unprecedented heights of success, if you follow them rigorously to the core. And prosperous millennials have shown their penchant to stick to the 7 habits closely.
