Videos circulating online from the fight appeared to show an exo-atmospheric kill, though details are few.Intercepting a ballistic missile outside the Earth's atmosphere is a challenging task, an expert told Business Insider.Footage of the suspected exo-atmospheric interception of an Iranian missile first appeared online Saturday night, shared by open source information accounts on X. It was unclear what exact weapon was used, although speculation was that it could have been Israel's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-boeing-helped-develop-israels-missile-defense-system-2024-4">Arrow system</a>, a key part of its layered air defense network. Another video posted by a defense correspondent for the Times of Israel seemed to offer a clearer look at an exo-atmospheric interception. It is unclear whether this was the same kill seen in the first video or a separate event.Neither the US Department of Defense nor the Israel Defense Force immediately responded to BI's request for comment on what is thought to be a missile kill beyond the atmosphere. An exo-atmospheric interception, which is when an interceptor strikes a ballistic missile and destroys it before it can re-enter Earth's atmosphere, is "impressive for several reasons," Dr. Sidharth Kaushal, a research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, told Business Insider.First, the complex process requires gathering data about the missile, in this case an Iranian ballistic missile fired towards Israel in an unprecedented attack, in its midcourse phase of its flight, when the speed is the highest."This is both complex in terms of long-range tracking, but also target discrimination," Kaushal said, adding that at that point "the second stage boosters and body of the missile separate from its warhead, which generates a challenge in terms of discriminating the warhead from other radar returns."Another consideration is the speed of the missile during this stage. Because it's going so fast, it "imposes considerable demands in terms of interceptor speed and maneuverability in order to achieve a kill," he added. It also requires precise accuracy.Once a ballistic missile has re-entered the atmosphere, it can be easier to track and target it, but at that point, there is potentially less reaction time for another interceptor, which may be strained by other demands, to respond.<div type="image" title="An anti-missile system operates after Iran launched drones and missiles toward Israel." height="2899" width="4346" msid="109380461" hostid="261" sizebytes="610950"></div>The US military assets in the region and Israel have a few capabilities able to target ballistic missile threats in outer space.For Israel, the Arrow system, which consists of Arrow 2 and 3, is a key air-defense capability. Arrow 3 was deployed in 2017 and achieved its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/israel-used-new-arrow-system-first-time-stop-enemy-missile-2023-11">first confirmed kill</a> back in November 2023 against Houthi ballistic missiles. It was an upgrade from Israel's Arrow 2 system, which was deployed in 2000.Both of Israel's Arrow systems can intercept short- and medium-range ballistic missiles, but while Arrow 2 was built to eliminate threats in the upper atmosphere, Arrow 3 is able to execute missile intercepts in space, according to The Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington DC-based think tank.A senior US military official said that Arrow played a key role in stopping Iranian ballistic missiles, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/press-briefings/2024/04/14/background-press-call-by-senior-administration-officials-on-irans-attacks-against-the-state-of-israel/">explaining</a> that "the majority of those missiles were engaged by the Arrow system — Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 — in Israel."But US warships and fighter aircraft were also involved. On Tuesday, the US Navy confirmed it fired a Standard Missile 3, or SM-3, against Iranian ballistic missiles, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-warships-used-weapon-combat-first-destroy-iranian-missiles-2024-4#">the first time</a> the weapon has been used in combat. The SM-3 is also capable of destroying short- to intermediate-range ballistic missiles during the midcourse phase and can hit targets outside the Earth's atmosphere.SM-3s are unique in that they are the only one of the Navy's Standard Missiles "designed to operate in the vacuum of space," CSIS said in its <a target="_blank" href="https://missilethreat.csis.org/defsys/sm-3/">Missile Defense Project</a>.

For example, Napoleon and Hitler fumed at the English Channel and Royal Navy that kept their mighty armies from conquering Britain. Conversely, the British needed a continental power with a big army — usually Russia — to fight the French and Germans on land.Today, NATO's naval power is far superior to Russia's. The problem is Russia has always been a continental power whose strength rested on its army. NATO may dominate the oceans, but that may not be much help if Russian tanks invade the Baltic States or Poland.So, how can NATO exploit its naval advantage? Two British experts have an idea: use NATO's navies to wage psychological warfare against Russia. Or more specifically, use naval power to scare Moscow into allocating its scarce resources to defending its huge coastlines rather than invading neighbors."By forcing Russia to commit to its own defenses in the maritime domain, it would divert critical Russian resources to tasks that the Alliance [NATO] deems less threatening," wrote Sidharth Kaushal and Rene Balletta in an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.rusi.org/explore-our-research/publications/occasional-papers/asymmetric-approach-use-maritime-forces-competing-russia">essay</a> for Britain's Royal United Services Institute think tank.For America and Britain, the sea has been a friend: a buffer against invasion, a highway to overseas empire, and a way to ensure that wars are fought on foreign soil. But for Russia, with nearly 24,000 miles of coastline across Europe and Asia, the sea has historically been a source of vulnerability. Though the Russian Navy is one of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wdmmw.org/russian-navy.php">world's largest</a>, it mainly exists to protect the motherland, to support the army, and to provide strategic firepower such as from nuclear missile subs. Many of the cruise missiles that have pummeled Ukrainian cities for the past two years have been launched by the Black Sea Fleet.But control of the seas, in the way that the famous 19th Century American naval theorist <a target="_blank" href="https://thediplomat.com/2014/12/the-geopolitical-vision-of-alfred-thayer-mahan/">Alfred Thayer Mahan</a> defined it, is not the Russian Navy's mission. "Rather than naval combat per se, the purpose of Russian sea power is to ensure that the Russian state can compete and engage in conflict safely and effectively," the essay said.In the Crimean War of 1854, Russia was defeated by a British and French amphibious assault that captured Sevastopol. In 2024, the fear is that NATO ships could launch long-range guided missiles at the Russian heartland.There are several ways that NATO can exploit this fear, according to Kaushal and Balletta. Western nations can conduct exercises, forward deploy nuclear submarines closer to Russia, invest in drones and hypersonic missiles, and even convert shipboard anti-aircraft missiles – such as the US SM-2 and SM-6 — into land attack weapons.As Russia rebuilds its military to replace the enormous losses of the Ukraine war, the Kremlin may feel compelled to divert resources to naval rather than ground forces. "To the extent that the Alliance can expand the area over which Russia must achieve sea denial in order to protect itself against long-range strikes, it can shape the contours of Russian force regeneration," the essay argued. "It can achieve this primarily in two ways: by expanding its long-range land attack capability, and by operating on new vectors that Russia has not historically had to defend."The Kremlin will not find it easy to beef up its maritime defenses. "While Russia can achieve sea denial and a degree of sea control in its coastal seas, contesting freedom of action out to 1,000 kilometers and beyond will be difficult and costly for a country that must also rebuild its forces on land," said the essay. In particular, while Russia has a large arsenal of anti-ship missiles based on sea and land, it lacks the ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) capabilities <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-putin-invincible-zircon-hypersonic-missile-speed-accuracy-limitations-2023-2">to detect distant naval targets</a> and guide missiles toward them.Ships — especially those intended for blue-water rather than coastal operations — are also expensive to build, maintain, and to crews at a time when the Russian Army and Aerospace Forces are in desperate need of skilled personnel. Russian shipyards are already overburdened, and new vessels may need imported components that are blocked by Western sanctions.However, the West also suffers from constraints. As the authors acknowledge, some NATO members on Russia's border — such as Finland and Norway — may become nervous about making Russia nervous. And, of course, there is the fact that Russia has historically feared attack by the West – and it possesses the world's biggest nuclear arsenal. Stoking the Kremlin's fear of waves of cruise missiles streaking in from the sea carries a risk of nuclear escalation.Nonetheless, this approach does leverage NATO's maritime advantage. Given a choice, the Kremlin would probably prefer to spend resources on buying tanks to fight in Ukraine rather than warships to guard the Baltic. NATO navies can exploit a Russian fear and keep Putin from invading more neighbors 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Ukraine claims to have struck two Russian vessels with "Sea Baby" drones this week. </li><li>If confirmed, the damage will ramp up pressure on the Black Sea Fleet's strained repair facilities. </li></ul>Ukraine doubled down on claims on Friday that it had damaged a Russian patrol ship near Sevastopol with "Sea Baby" drones.If confirmed, the strike could add to long-term pressure on Russia's ability to maintain and repair its Black Sea Fleet, experts say.Amid its bombardments on both ships and port facilities, Ukraine faces a "reinforcing cycle and loop of successes and opportunities" in the Black Sea, Basil Germond, a maritime security expert at the UK's Lancaster University, told Insider.Russia is already barred from bringing reinforcements to its Black Sea Fleet. The more damage its ships take on, the more they will clog up its drydocks, bringing on a cumulative effect on Russia's naval powers in those waters, he said."Consequently, the Black Sea Fleet will have to be increasingly prudent with its remaining assets," he added.<h3>Reports of 'Sea Baby' strikes</h3>Ukraine claimed on Wednesday that it struck the Russian patrol ship Pavel Derzhavin with "Sea Baby" USVs, Ukraine's experimental maritime drone, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ukrinform.net/rubric-ato/3773499-russias-buyan-corvette-pavel-derzhavin-ship-attacked-by-ukrainian-experimental-drones-sources.html">Ukrinform reported</a>, citing an unnamed source from Ukraine's security service.Further, on Thursday, it struck the Buyan missile ship, the source said. Neither report has been independently confirmed.Crimean Telegram group <a target="_blank" href="https://t.me/Crimeanwind/45103">Crimean Wind reported</a> that locals had heard an explosion at around 10 a.m. local time on Wednesday.<a target="_blank" href="https://t.me/kchf_ru/2358">But a prominent Russian Telegram group,</a> devoted to following the movements of the Black Sea Fleet, shared an image that same day purporting to show the vessel, undamaged, in port.Russia's Ministry of Defense has not commented directly on the claims. On Friday, the fleet released a statement saying that the Pavel Derzhavin was involved in an exercise to remove sea mines in the area, with no mention of an attack, <a target="_blank" href="https://tass.ru/armiya-i-opk/19000993">state-controlled news outlet TASS reported</a>.This was rapidly followed by <a target="_blank" href="https://t.me/rybar/53185 ">a post from pro-Russian military blog Rybar</a> saying that the Pavel Derzhavin's rudder was damaged that morning. The outlet suggested that the damage came from Ukrainian sea drones.Images of the same class of ship, trailing black smoke, circulated online on Friday, <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/CovertShores/status/1712755300644655198">which open-source naval researcher HI Sutton said</a> were as-yet inconclusive.Should the reports of either attack — on Wednesday or Friday — prove true, the ship will soon be seeking to squeeze in on an increasingly tight repair schedule.<h2>Russia's bind</h2>In September alone, Ukraine devastated <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russias-black-sea-fleet-headquarters-hit-another-blow-forces-crimea-2023-9?r=US&amp;IR=T">the Black Sea Fleet's headquarters</a> and did significant damage to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-strike-on-crimea-blasted-submarine-and-landing-vessel-images-2023-9?r=US&amp;IR=T">a KILO-class submarine and a landing craft </a>in one of its drydocks.Independent naval researcher and former Norwegian Navy officer Thord Are Iverson told Insider that, as of last week, Sevastopol's dry dock space was at full capacity. He earlier <a target="_blank" href="https://www.rferl.org/a/russia-navy-dry-dock-problem-ukraine-/32595547.html">told Radio Free Europe</a> that damage to the drydock itself from Ukraine's attacks is likely to have been minimal.To repair the Pavel Derzhavin space "could probably be freed for more urgent requirements," he said.Nonetheless, "the impact of reduced dock capacity on maintenance and ship availability is something that will accumulate over time," he said.<a target="_blank" href="https://theconversation.com/what-the-montreux-convention-is-and-what-it-means-for-the-ukraine-war-178136">The Montreux Convention</a>, a treaty that controls military ships entering the Black Sea, bars Russia from bringing in reinforcements.Trapped there, its fleet faces both wear and tear and increasingly confident Ukrainian attacks — notably at Sevastopol.Russia has moved at least a dozen vessels from that port to safer shores on the Russian coast following the September attacks.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-moved-navy-from-crimea-protect-ukraine-drone-attacks-isw-2023-10?r=US&amp;IR=T">Satellite images dated to early October showed</a> that at least a dozen ships were seen heading toward the port of Novorossiysk, more than 300 km away. The move, though not unprecedented and potentially temporary, has led experts to see it as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-lost-control-over-black-sea-ships-move-ports-expert--2023-10?r=US&amp;IR=T">a sign of Russia's waning control over the Black Sea</a>."Novorossiysk has much less developed naval infrastructure than Sevastopol," Sidharth Kaushal, a sea power expert at the UK's Royal United Services Institute, told Insider.According to Radio Free Europe, the port can't do specialized servicing to submarines, for example. And the other ports Russian ships have moved to, such as Feodosia, on the eastern side of Crimea, also can't take on complex repairs, the outlet reported."Retrofitting another yard to take over from Sevastopol will take time — time a Black Sea Fleet at war does not have," Iversen told Radio Free Europe.This squeeze on the Black Sea Fleet ultimately hampers some of its ability to project power over those waters, Germond said.

Case study: How Netflix India created buzz around Kota Factory’s season 2 launch by leveraging Jeetu Bhaiya’s fanbase

<ul><li>While the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">Coronavirus</keyword> outbreak has led to productions of films and daily soaps being stopped across the country, TV viewership is going up due to people staying at home.</li><li>However, the GECs re now faced with the challenge of coming up with fresh content for its viewers.</li><li>In such a scenario, how are these channels planning to tackle the situation?</li></ul>It’s been close to 2 weeks since India’s film and television bodies decided to suspend shootings from to avoid the spread of the novel Coronavirus. The Indian Film &amp; Television Directors' Association (IFTDA), Producers Guild of India and Federation of Western Indian Cine Employees (FWICE) had decided on March 17 to put production and shooting on hold till March 31. As the PM announced his 21-day complete lockdown, production will not start before April 14. The biggest impact of this will be on GEC channels that usually work with a content bank of about two weeks. However, with the lockdown, these channels will soon run out of fresh content to air. Considering most people are stuck at home, OTT and TV viewership saw a spike, according to Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India data. The total TV consumption saw a spike of 8% across India in the week ended March 20 (<keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">Covid-19</keyword> Week 1), while the total time spent per user on smartphones went increased by 6.2% to 25 hours a week. Moreover, the consumption growth in the Hindi speaking markets (HSM) was at around 10% in comparison to the South region that grew by 5%. The HSM region saw an increase in terms of both reach and time spent. While this opens up possibilities for advertisers to catch more eyeballs, GECs are now faced with the problem of running out of content. In such a scenario, what is the strategy they are employing to ensure that they do not lose their audience who can only stay engaged if they are offered something new to watch? Ensuring all-round entertainment for consumers While production has come to a complete halt, all the channels believe that the show mustn’t stop and are strategizing at how to make the best use of the content at their disposal currently. And a lot of the channels are listening to what the audience wants. Zee is bringing back some of its old, popular shows from its library across its channels, like ‘Kasamh Se’ on Zee TV and ‘Sambhaji’ on Zee Marathi and ‘Goyenda Ginni’ on Zee Bangla amongst others. Similarly, Viacom18 will be bringing back its show Dil Se Dil Tak and Bigg Boss 13. In the past, shows like Bandini, Chandragupt Maurya, Bhagwaan Shree Krishna have done exceptionally well. Ramayana, too has a very strong connect with viewers across India beyond the Hindi speaking markets. Mythological and historical shows along with some well-produced thrillers and family dramas make it an interesting package for viewers. We are in tune with this, considering Dangal TV too has been airing Ramayana as well as similar mythological shows like Devi Adi Parashakti, Mahima Shani Dev Ki for a while now. Devi Adi Parashakti and Mahima Shani Dev Ki are among the top 2 shows across Hindi GEC, HSM(U+R) as per latest data by BARC India for Week 11. We are aware that such content always has an audience and therefore we will continue to keep our viewers engaged with such shows.” Covid-19’s business impact While many sectors like events and out-of-home have been badly hit due to the lockdown, broadcasters are hopeful that they will be impacted less. Considering viewership is on the rise too, it presents an opportunity for both broadcasters and advertisers to make something out of an adverse situation. Dangal TV has seen a spike in its viewership, like most other GECs and is not focusing on new ideas. “Despite the COVID-19 challenge, Dangal TV is experiencing a spike in the average time spent.We are witnessing the early signs of a consumption uptick with an increase in the viewership. At Enterr10 Television Network, we are strongly connected and engaged with our viewers. Our numbers have been ahead of us. We are readily willing at focusing on exploring new ideas, IPs, etc. We haven’t stepped back in terms of exploring what more is possible, even during this period. Even in this unprecedented situation, we will continue to invest in good library, innovative programming and in distribution that will further aid in consolidating our position in both rural and urban markets. While there is huge competition amongst TV channels, our first priority is to consolidate, maintain and further strengthen our leadership position on television.” Pointing towards the fact that a lot of advertising on TV comes from FMCG that have been relatively less impacted, Sharma shared her optimism about the future. “The lockdown has hit the manufacturing, supply chain and consumption of all brands and that will invariably have an effect on ad spends. However, TV and digital will have a marginal impact as compared to other mediums like print, outdoors and radio as TV viewership is expected to see an upswing due to the forced lockdown. Secondly, a large amount of advertising revenue for a GEC comes from FMCG brands that are relatively less impacted in the current situation. Also, since it is an industry phenomenon, all GEC channels will witness a drop in ad spends,” explained Sharma. Added Agarwal, “Over the next 3 weeks, we expect content consumption on TV to go up as people look to keep themselves entertained. Given the temporary nature of the lockdown, it would be imprudent to quote any implication as of now, but we are sure that TV has become an essential service providing the much needed companionship to families in the current times.”
