<br /><br /><ul><li>There is an outbreak of <keyword id="132695" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="forest-fires">forest fires</keyword> in Siberia, and they’re 10 times worse than the year before.</li><li>The warmer temperatures are forcing people out of their homes during the coronavirus pandemic, leaving many a campfire unattended.</li><li>This may only be the beginning of another round of forest fires for the Northern Hemisphere as most regions experience a drier than average winter.</li></ul>Russia is already one of the world’s worst-affected coronavirus hotspots and now it has another — more literal — fire to put out in the far east.<br /><br />  <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="75522052" title="Russia is rapidly becoming one of the world's coronavirus hotspots, and it just reported a record 10,000 new cases in a day" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div><br />Amid warming up for spring, things seem to have gotten a little too hot as in Siberia a large amount of the area has caught on fire. For Russia, this is an annual event. However, as the government is busy dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, the fires have gotten more extreme than they were a year ago. <br /><br />  <div type="javascript" title="Custom" contenttype="Video"><cdata><![CDATA[]]></cdata></div><br />“In total, on April 28 this year, 3,339 outbreaks were recorded. In comparison, only 1,960 were recorded that last year. The area covered by fires since the beginning of the year is 477,000 hectares. Siberia is on fire like never before, leaving Russia to fend off one too many hotspots

On Tuesday, a new fire started every minute in Brazil.</p><p>Since August 15, more than 9,500 fires have sparked in Brazil, most of them in the Amazon basin. The blazes <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-fires-satellite-images-map-of-rainforest-blazes-2019-8">can be seen from space</a>, and the smoke even temporarily <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-fires-eclipse-sun-above-sao-paulo-brazil-2019-8">eclipsed the sun</a> in Sao Paulo on Monday.</p><p>So far this year, Brazil has recorded <a href="http://queimadas.dgi.inpe.br/queimadas/portal/situacao-atual">more than 76,000 fires</a> - an annual record, according to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-rainforest-experiencing-record-number-of-wildfires-this-year-2019-8">Brazil's National Institute for Space Research</a><span>.</span></p><p>The vast majority of these <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-rainforest-fires-breaking-records-2019-8">fires</a> were <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fires-in-the-amazon-rainforest-were-started-by-humans-2019-8">deliberately started by people</a>: F<span>armers and loggers purposefully set fire to the rainforest during the summer months </span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-rainforest-experiencing-record-breaking-deforestation-2019-7">to clear swaths of the Amazon</a><span> for industrial or agricultural use in the coming year.</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.reutersconnect.com/discover/trending">Nacho Doce / Reuters</a></span></p><p class="caption">An aerial view of a tract of Amazon jungle burning as it is being cleared by loggers and farmers near the city of Novo Progresso, Brazil, August 23, 2019.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Here's what's really going on in the Amazon.</p><h2>Why is the Amazon burning?</h2><p>Unlike wildfires in California, or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/arctic-on-fire-satellite-images-from-space-2019-8?r=US&amp;IR=T">the current blazes in Siberia</a>, the Amazon fires aren't natural.</p><p><span>About 99% of Amazon fires start from human actions, "either on purpose or by accident," Alberto Setzer, a senior scientist at Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (INPE), <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/22/americas/amazon-fires-humans-intl-hnk-trnd/index.html">told CNN</a>. </span></p><p><span>As CNN meteorologist Haley Brink explained in the network's report, "[Farmers] wait for the dry season and they start burning and clearing the areas so that their cattle can graze. That's what we're suspecting is going on down there."</span></p><p><span>The Amazon's dry season runs from July to October and peaks in late September, and with it comes this annual burning, called the "queimada." The rest of year, wetter weather minimizes the risk of fires. </span></p><p><span>"The important thing to know about the Amazon is that few fires occur there naturally," Mikaela Weisse, who tracks deforestation and fires for the World Resources Institute, <a href="https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/wjw5bb/the-amazon-wildfires-arent-natural-blame-humans">told Vice</a>. </span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?id=tag%3Areuters.com%2C2019%3Anewsml_RC117D887A10&amp;share=true">Bruno Kelly / Reuters</a></span></p><p class="caption">A tract of Amazon jungle burns as it is being cleared by loggers and farmers in Novo Airao, Amazonas state, Brazil August 21, 2019.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><span>In addition to farmers, illegal loggers and miners sometimes light fires as well, in order to destroy evidence of their activities or drive away indigenous people, <a href="https://www.vox.com/2019/8/22/20828219/amazon-rainforest-wildfire-photos-fire-greenland">Vox reported</a>. </span><a href="https://www.survivalinternational.org/about/amazontribes">At least 400 indigenous tribes</a> live in the rainforest, and their cultures and livelihoods are intimately linked with the state of the Amazon. </p><h2>If fires are set every summer, why are this year's a big deal?</h2><p><span>What's unprecedented this summer is how many individual fires were sparked at the same time. In 2019, </span><span>Brazil has recorded more fires than in any other year since researchers began keeping track in 2013 - and there are still four months to go. </span></p><p><span>This surge of fires in Brazil mark an 83% increase from the same time period last year, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-rainforest-experiencing-record-number-of-wildfires-this-year-2019-8">Brazil's National Institute for Space Research reported</a>. All told, Brazil only had about 40,000 fires in 2018, about half of this year's current total of 76,000.</span></p><p><span>These fires also come on the heels of another worrisome milestone for the world's largest rainforest. The month of July set a new record for the most deforestation ever in the Amazon in a single month, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jul/25/amazonian-rainforest-near-unrecoverable-tipping-point">The Guardian reported</a>. The Amazon shrunk by 519 square miles (1,345 square kilometers). That's more than twice the area of Tokyo.</span></p><p>Data<span> </span><a href="http://terrabrasilis.dpi.inpe.br/app/dashboard/alerts/legal/amazon/aggregated/#">from Brazilian satellites</a><span> </span>indicated that about three football fields' worth of Amazonian trees fell every minute last month. He supports development projects like a highway and hydroelectric dam in the Amazon.</span></p><p>His administration has cut down on the seizing of illegally harvested timber. In 2018 (under the previous administration), 883,000 cubic feet of illegal timber was seized. Last year was the fourth warmest, </span><a href="https://www.noaa.gov/news/2018-was-4th-hottest-year-on-record-for-globe">behind 2016 (the warmest), 2015, and 2017</a><span>.</span></p><p><span>Hotter air sucks away the moisture from trees and soil, while decreased rainfall makes for parched forests that are more prone to burning. </span><span>In that sense, climate change and uncontrolled rainforest blazes are interconnected.</span></p><h2>How will this affect the planet?</h2><p>As the world's largest rainforest, the Amazon plays a crucial role in keeping our planet's carbon-dioxide levels in check. Plants and trees take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen back into the air in their process of photosynthesis. This is why the Amazon, which covers 2.1 million square miles, <a href="http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20130226-amazon-lungs-of-the-planet">is often referred to as the "lungs of the planet"</a>: The forest produces between 6% and 20% of the oxygen in our planet's atmosphere.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Ueslei Marcelino/Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">An aerial view of a deforested plot of the Amazon near Porto Velho, Rondonia State, Brazil August 22, 2019.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>But when trees burn, they release carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere, where it contributes to climate change.</p><p>Scientists also fear that over time, <span>the Amazon could suffer so much deforestation that a feedback loop could turn it into an African-savanna-type landscape. </span>If another 20% of the Amazon were to disappear - roughly 20% of the Amazon has already been cut down in Brazil in the past 50 years, <a href="https://theintercept.com/2019/07/06/brazil-amazon-rainforest-indigenous-conservation-agribusiness-ranching/">according to the Intercept</a> - some experts think that could trigger a process called a dieback, in which the rest of the forest dries out and burns.<span></span></p><p>If that happens,<span> </span><a href="https://www.rainforesttrust.org/climate-change-series-part-1-rainforests-absorb-store-large-quantities-carbon-dioxide/">up to 140 billion tons</a><span> </span>of stored carbon could get released into the atmosphere, which would cause a further uptick in already rising global temperatures.</p><p>"The Amazon is incredibly important for our future, for our ability to stave off the worst of climate change," Christian Poirier, the program director of non-profit organization Amazon Watch, <a href="https://m.cnn.com/en/article/h_1bd2ca8566a8df37698b6116e657ddd6">told CNN</a>. "This isn't hyperbole. Summer heat wave tracker: July was the hottest month ever recorded, by a lot

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Retired Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling said in a Washington Post op-ed Putin's draft is a "recipe for slaughter." </li><li>"They will not be prepared for what they will encounter," said Hertling, former commander of the US Army in Europe.</li></ul><p>Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to pursue a partial military mobilization and draft hundreds of thousands of reservists to fight Russia's war in Ukraine is a "recipe for slaughter," retired Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling, former commander of the US Army in Europe, said in <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/09/27/putin-recruits-flee-russia/">a new op-ed</a> for the Washington Post. </p><p>"The call-up is an outrage, but not only for the reasons you might imagine. Sending new recruits, poorly<strong> </strong>trained Russian reservists and untrained civilians into Ukraine is a recipe for slaughter. They will not be prepared for what they will encounter," Hertling wrote.</p><p>Putin said last Wednesday that only people who had previously served "and have specific military occupational specialties and corresponding experience" will be called up, but people with no prior military experience are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kremlin-admits-it-will-correct-errors-selecting-draftees-for-war-2022-9">being forced to enlist</a>, according to <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/poor-rural-buryatia-russias-partial-mobilisation-hits-hard-2022-09-23/">recent reports.</a></p><p>"Putin might continue to send unwilling Russian men to an ill-conceived and illegal invasion for which they are not trained or prepared. But it's not warfare. It's just more murder — this time of its own citizens," Hertling said. </p><p>Hertling said that as commander of the US Army in Europe, he visited Russia several times and observed how the Russian army trained its conscripts. </p><p>The former US general said that Russian drill sergeants were unprofessional and continuously harassed and hazed recruits," while marksmanship training was "geared toward familiarization with a weapon, but not qualification on it."</p><p>"Soldiers were allocated few rounds for practice on firing ranges. First aid training was rudimentary, map reading and land navigation was nonexistent, soldier initiative was lacking, and discipline was lax," Hertling said. "Having watched the Russian army during the first seven months of its campaign in Ukraine, I cannot say I'm surprised by any of their setbacks. The Russians performed as their training would have suggested: poorly. The casualty counts reflect this. It is no wonder so many young Russians are fleeing the country."</p><p>An intelligence update from Britain's Ministry of Defense on Monday offered a similar assessment.</p><p>"The lack of military trainers, and the haste with which Russia has started the mobilization, suggests that many of the drafted troops will deploy to the front line with minimal relevant preparation," the UK update said, adding, "They are likely to suffer a high attrition rate."</p><p>Putin's mobilization decree has prompted protests across Russia and even instances of violence, as thousands of Russian men desperately attempt to exit their country. Recent satellite images showed a traffic jam at the Russia-Georgia border that stretched for almost 10 miles, and a man shot and wounded a recruitment officer in Siberia on Monday, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/09/26/mobilization-putin-russia-war-ukraine/">the Washington Post reported.</a></p><p>The Kremlin on Monday acknowledged that there has been pushback to the mobilization decree.</p><p>"There are cases when the decree has been violated," Peskov told reporters, per the New York Times. "In some regions, governors are actively working to correct the situation."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Life in Diomede, <keyword id="12020240" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="alaska" source="Orion">Alaska</keyword>, is unlike anywhere else in the United States.</li><li>Just 2.4 miles from <keyword id="11894337" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="russia" source="Orion">Russia</keyword>'s <keyword id="13507653" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="big-diomede" source="Orion">Big Diomede</keyword> Island, the city of 83 people can see the border from the shore.</li></ul><p>Geopolitical relations between Russia and the United States are often seen through the lens of geography, with both countries projecting power across multiple time zones on opposite sides of the Earth.</p><p>As the world's two biggest nuclear powers — and as Russia's offensive against <keyword id="11985141" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ukraine" source="Orion">Ukraine</keyword> enters its sixth month, placing US-Russia relations at an all-time low — fears of an armed conflict evoke images of long range missile strikes and proxy wars in far flung regions, or for Baby Booomers, "duck-and-cover" drills at school.</p><p>Yet in the middle of the <keyword id="12554870" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="bering-strait" source="Orion">Bering Strait</keyword>, there are Americans who can literally see Russia from their homes.</p><p>"We're the back door of the country — or the front door, rather," Edward Soolook, a 55-year-old lifelong resident of Diomede, told Insider in a phone interview.</p><p>Russian troops stationed on Big Diomede Island, situated 2.4 miles away, will yell in English at any boats venturing too close to their shoreline. They've even been known to fire off the occasional warning shot, Soolook said — adding he's never personally heard a warning shot.</p><p>"We're safe, as long as we sleep good at night," Soolook told Insider, noting that Soolook told Insider that life on the island hasn't changed dramatically since Russia invaded Ukraine. "We keep the eyes and ears."</p><p>The city of Diomede, Alaska, on <keyword id="13507652" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="little-diomede" source="Orion">Little Diomede</keyword> Island, has a population of 83 people, according to the 2020 census.</p><p>Big Diomede Island features a similarly barren landscape to Little Diomede Island but also a small Russian military base and a crashed Soviet Lisunov Li-2 aircraft from 1972.</p><p>Big Diomede is in a timezone 21 hours ahead of Little Diomede, but both islands have clear views of each other, and the Alaskan city faces directly across toward the cliffs of the bigger island.</p><h2>Frontier of the frontier</h2><p>Little Diomede remains unknown to most Americans. But that's changed a bit in the past several weeks.</p><p>In the burgeoning subgenre of Google Maps-themed TikTok videos, for example, a post by map_nerd about the islands already has more than 1.6 million likes on the social media app.</p> <p>Virtual travel to Little Diomede remains the best route there. Unless you charter or commandeer a boat when the ocean isn't frozen, there's only one way to get to Diomede — helicopter.</p><p>Pathfinder Aviation offers helicopter trips to and from Diomede from Nome, on Alaska's western coast. These include emergency flights, which the company says are available 24-hours-a-day. A representative for Pathfinder declined to comment for this story.</p><p>Bering Air, which also declined to comment for this story, ceased flights to Diomede after a storm broke up the frozen landing strip in 2018. "We hope to resume service in the future!" the company says on its <a href="https://www.beringair.com/about/our-destinations/little-diomede/">website</a>. </p><p>The 2018 is rather unprecedented in the history of the islands and has remained ever since, according to <a href="https://alaskamagazine.com/authentic-alaska/wildlife-nature/alarm-bells-for-little-diomede-island/">Alaska Magazine</a>. </p><p>"Climate change is real, and it is demanding that we the people must learn to live around new seasons, weather, ice conditions, and even the loss of our culture," Opik Okinga, Diomede's environmental coordinator, told the magazine. "Soon, we won't see the manners we practice, the practices that our ancestors gave us to survive." </p><p>For more than 3,000 years, the Ingalikmiut people have navigated the islands and surrounding ice sheets, conquering the conditions and rocky surfaces to live off of the fish and other natural resources in the Bering Strait.</p>

If that happens, catastrophic sea-level rise would <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-cities-disappear-sea-level-rise-2100-2019-3">swallow coastal cities</a> across the globe. However, the scale of ice loss in Greenland this year was extraordinary. From July 30 to August 3, melting occurred across <a href="http://nsidc.org/greenland-today/2019/08/europes-warm-air-spikes-greenland-melting-to-record-levels/">90%</a> of the continent's surface, dumping 55 billion tons of water over 5 days. That's enough to cover Florida in <a href="https://twitter.com/MartinStendel/status/1157166403490705413?s=20">almost 5 inches of water</a>.</p><p>The melting mirrored the record-breaking ice loss <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/antarctica-and-greenland-are-melting-2012-11">seen in 2012</a>, when almost all of Greenland's ice sheet was exposed to melting for the first time in documented history. This year, the ice started to melt even earlier than in 2012 and three weeks earlier than average, <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2019/06/14/us/greenland-sudden-ice-melt-wxc/index.html">CNN</a> reported.</p><p>This extreme melting came during the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/july-hottest-month-in-history-world-meteorological-organization-2019-8">hottest month ever recorded</a>, as an intense heat wave <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uk-records-hottest-temperature-in-history-europe-heatwave-2019-7">washed over Europe</a> then wafted over to Greenland. Alaska also saw record <a href="https://twitter.com/AlaskaWx/status/1158046475227521026">sea-ice melt</a> in July. </p><p> All that melting exposes more <a href="https://insideclimatenews.org/news/07082019/alaska-record-hottest-month-sea-ice-melt-climate-change-permafrost-species-die-off?utm_source=InsideClimate+News&amp;utm_campaign=5c32700bc0-&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_29c928ffb5-5c32700bc0-327941861">permafrost</a>: frozen soil that releases powerful greenhouse gases when it thaws. That's <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/2019/08/arctic-permafrost-is-thawing-it-could-speed-up-climate-change-feature/">happening faster than scientists predicted</a>. The release of those gases leads the planet to warm even more, which accelerates more ice melt.</p><p>Last month was an anomaly for Greenland, but it could be the new normal by 2070 if humans don't curb greenhouse-gas emissions, according to climate models simulated by <a href="https://twitter.com/xavierfettweis/status/1156487868950482945">Xavier Fettweis</a>, a climate researcher at the University of Liège in Belgium.</p><p>"By mid to end of the century is when we should be seeing these melt levels - not right now," Ruth Mottram, a climate scientist at the Danish Meteorological Institute, told <a href="https://insideclimatenews.org/news/01082019/greenland-climate-change-ice-sheet-melt-heat-wave-sea-level-rise-fish-global-warming">Inside Climate News</a>. "[The models] are clearly not able to capture some of these important processes."</p><h2>Melting ice in Greenland raises sea levels</h2><p>Greenland's ice melt has already raised sea levels more than 0.5 inches since 1972. Half of that occurred just in the last eight years, according to a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/greenland-approaching-threshold-of-irreversible-melting-2019-1">study</a> published in April. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.reutersconnect.com/detail?id=tag%3Areuters.com%2C2019%3Anewsml_RC1375EA5A80%3A1497670168">tk</a></span></p><p class="caption">Ice melt forms gushing white water in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland on August 1, 2019.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>At this rate, <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2019/study-predicts-more-long-term-sea-level-rise-from-greenland-ice">the entire Greenland ice sheet could melt</a> within 1,000 years, causing up to 23 feet of sea level rise.</p><p>But Mottram isn't so sure about that projected timeline.</p><p>"Somewhere between 1.5 and 2 degrees, there's a tipping point after which it will no longer be possible to maintain the Greenland Ice Sheet," she told <a href="https://insideclimatenews.org/news/01082019/greenland-climate-change-ice-sheet-melt-heat-wave-sea-level-rise-fish-global-warming">Inside Climate News</a>. "What we don't have a handle on is how quickly the Greenland Ice Sheet will be lost."</p><p>Greenland's ice is already approaching that tipping point, according to a <a href="https://www.pnas.org/content/116/19/9239">study</a> published in May. Whereas melting during warm cycles used to get balanced out by new ice forming during cool cycles, warm periods now cause significant meltdown and cool periods simply pause it. </p><p>That makes it difficult for the ice sheet to regenerate what it's losing.</p><h2>Unprecedented fires have also burned across the Arctic</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/145302/another-fire-in-greenland">Joshua Stevens/NASA Earth Observatory</a></span></p><p class="caption">Satellites detected the infrared signal of a wildfire near Sisimiut, Greenland on July 10, 2019.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The warm, dry weather that caused the ice to melt also set the stage for wildfires in Greenland.</p><p>Satellites first detected a wildfire near Sisimiut area on July 10. Temperatures in the region at the time <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/145302/another-fire-in-greenland">approached 68 degrees Fahrenheit</a> (20 degrees Celsius); the normal daily high is 50 degrees (10 degrees Celsius).</p><p>The fires may have been <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/145302/another-fire-in-greenland">started by a hiker</a> using <a href="https://www.arctictoday.com/hikers-warned-as-greenland-wildfire-burns-out-of-control/">an outdoor oven</a>.</p><p>This was the first fire of its size since another large one in the same area surprised scientists <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/90709/fire-and-ice-in-greenland">in August 2017</a>. That's the equivalent of Sweden's annual emissions, and more carbon than Arctic fires released during every month of July from 2010 to 2018 combined, <a href="https://atmosphere.copernicus.eu/cams-monitors-unprecedented-wildfires-arctic">according to the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS)</a>.</p><p>CAMS tracked over 100 "intense and long-lived" wildfires in the Arctic Circle over six weeks in June and July. Those fires spread farther, burned more intensely, and lasted longer than normal.</p><p>Fires in Alaska and Siberia also <a href="https://nationalpost.com/news/world/as-wildfires-scorch-greenland-its-ice-sheet-is-on-track-for-a-record-melt-season">deposited soot</a> on Greenland's ice sheet, which darkened the surface and caused it to absorb more heat, which leads to faster melting.</p><p>"It is unusual to see fires of this scale and duration at such high latitudes in June," Mark Parrington, a CAMS wildfire expert, said in a <a href="https://atmosphere.copernicus.eu/cams-monitors-unprecedented-wildfires-arctic">release</a>. The continent has lost 252 billion tons of ice per year in the last decade.
