Domestic passenger vehicle wholesales declined by about 2 per cent year-on-year in August as companies curtailed dispatches to reduce inventory at dealers amid a drop in demand. According to data issued by the industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (<keyword id="20185536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SIAM" source="keywords">SIAM</keyword>), the total passenger vehicle dispatches in the domestic market stood at 3,52,921 units last month compared to 3,59,228 vehicles in August 2023, a dip of 1.8 per cent. Two-wheeler wholesales rose 9 per cent to 17,11,662 units last month against 15,66,594 units in the year-ago period, it added. Scooter dispatches last month climbed to 6,06,250 units from 5,49,290 units in August 2023, a growth of 10 per cent. Similarly, motorcycle dispatches from companies to dealers increased by 8 per cent to 10,60,866 units last month from 9,80,809 units in August 2023. The total three-wheeler sales grew 8 per cent to 69,962 units last month against 64,944 units a year ago. "Looking ahead, as the country enters the festive season, demand for vehicles is expected to grow, which will also be duly augmented by the recent announcements of PM E-DRIVE and PM-eBus Sewa Schemes of Government of India," SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon said. Passenger vehicle wholesales dip 2% in August as OEMs cut dispatches

Overall passenger vehicle dispatches to dealers rose to 3,59,228 units last month from 3,28,376 units in August 2022. Utility vehicle sales increased 34% year-on-year to 1,81,825 units. Passenger car dispatches on the other hand declined 10% to 1,20,031 units from 1,33,477 units in August 2022. Van wholesales also dipped to 11,859 units from 12,236 units. "Last month saw the highest ever August month sales for passenger vehicles and three-wheelers," Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) President <keyword id="230167" type="General" weightage="40" keywordseo="Vinod-Aggarwal" source="Orion">Vinod Aggarwal</keyword> said in a statement. Three-wheeler sales rose to 64,763 units in August as against 38,369 units in the same month last year. Two-wheeler dispatches increased to 15,66,594 units from 15,57,429 units. "<keyword id="163191" type="General" weightage="60" keywordseo="two-wheeler-sales" source="Orion">Two-wheeler sales</keyword> remained at levels similar to a year ago," Aggarwal said adding that the industry also witnessed a good growth in the commercial vehicle segment in August 2023. "Based on the performance of last month, we are even more optimistic for demand to pick up during the festive season, enabled by positive economic outlook and the revival of monsoon after a deficit in August," Aggarwal said. In the passenger vehicle segment, Maruti Suzuki India saw an increase of 16% in dispatches to dealers at 1,56,114 units from 1,34,166 units in August 2022. Rival Hyundai Motor India dispatched 53,830 units to dealers as against 49,510 units in the same month last year.

August auto sales: Powered by utility vehicles, PV dispatches to dealers increase 9%

According to industry data released on Friday, a total of 2,15,916 passenger vehicles were sold in the domestic market, representing a rise of 14.16 per cent, than the 1,89,129 units off-take during the like period of 2019. August auto sales: Festive season boosts passenger vehicles' sales, shows SIAM data

After nine continuous months of slump, till April 2014, the <keyword id="110874" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-car-industry">Indian car industry</keyword> is finally showing signs of improvement. In the last four months, <keyword id="47168" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Car-sales">car sales</keyword> have shown an upward trend--especially in August when top three car makers scored double digit growth over sales in the same month in last year (2013). If the momentum continues, it will help boost automobile industry and economic growth. Let’s explore key factors fuelling car industry’s growth. 
 
Sales numbers indicate turnaround, a slow one though 
 Car sales in India grew by 15.16% in August, 2014 as compared to sales in the same period last year. As per the data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (<keyword id="108827" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SIAM">SIAM</keyword>), a total of 1, 53, 758 units were sold in the domestic market in August; the number was 1,33,513 units last year. 
 <keyword id="6365618" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki-India">Maruti Suzuki India</keyword>, <keyword id="596" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword> and Honda Motor are the top three car manufacturers in India. All three recorded a double digit growth in August 2014 as against August 2013. Maruti Suzuki had maximum domestic monthly sales i.e. 82, 823 units, which is up by 30% against the sales for same period last year. Car models that contributed the most to Maruti’s growth include Swift, Dzire, Celerio and Ertiga. 
 
The second biggest car manufacturer, Hyundai Motor India, sold 33,593 units in August 2014, registering a growth of 19% over the sales in same month last year. Honda Cars India’s growth rate for August 2014 was 27% as compared to the sales registered in the same period last year. 
 
These numbers surely hint at Indian automobile industry turnaround, albeit at a slower pace. Mr. Vishnu Mathur, SIAM Director General validates the same: “The auto industry is seeing a gradual increase and even the cumulative numbers are seeing improvements month-on-month. We can see a slow turnaround happening." 
 
Economic recovery and consumer sentiment 
 
There are some initial signs of economic recovery and those seem to be driving the growth in the car industry. The economic growth for the April-June 2014 quarter has been 5.7% as compared to 4.6% for the same period, last year. This economic growth rate is the highest in the last two and a half years period. The industry experts and analysts also feel the same; they cite slight improvement in the economy and a new government as the key factors bringing a positive shift in the consumer sentiment and driving car sales. 
 
New models pushed sales 
 
It’s the range of newly launched cars that won consumer’s heart, which includes Hyundai Xcent, Hyundai Elite i20, Hyundai i10 Grand, new Honda City, Honda Amaze, Honda Mobilio, among others. They have been lapped up well by the consumers and have also played an important role in driving the overall car sales. 
 
Heading for an annual surge 
 
The industry body, SIAM, indicates that this positive trend in sales growth is expected to continue in the next couple of months with the onset of the festival season and more new launches lined up. 
 
Experts are saying that riding high on the positive consumer sentiments and increasing sales growth, car sales are expected to be better during the festive season, which is usually the time when Indian consumers make their key purchase s the period is considered auspicious. This may further push up manufacturers’ the annual sales revenues. 
 
Industry research agencies are indicating a possible 12% growth in annual sales in the car segment for the fiscal, only if the growth trend continues. This can be a big leap for India’s automobile industry after two years of slump.

The small to midsize-car owners and makers of cars ranging upto ₹20 Lakh — may still be able to sail past these potential policy updates. But the risk is much higher for luxury car owners and makers like Mercedes, BMW and any other car maker that sells cars at more than ₹20 lakhs a unit. This could even include the high-end cars from Indian auto giants like Tata Motors and Mahindra. If the Tamil Nadu government decides to act on the white paper, it would make at least one in every 10 cars sold in the country more expensive, at a time when car sales have been slow for over three years. Tamil Nadu is the third largest state in terms of vehicle registration , according to data <a href="https://vahan.parivahan.gov.in/vahan4dashboard/">shared</a> by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. As per the data, Tamil Nadu accounts for 10% of vehicles registered between 2017 to August 12 of 2021. schemes been a major point of difference when compared to Karnataka and Kerala. The multiple tax slabs have allowed both Kerala and Karnataka government to charge much higher motor vehicle tax rate to customers buying luxury cars above ₹20 lakh. The other interesting bit here is that while Karnataka taxes motor vehicles more, it still ranks right after Tamil Nadu in terms of the number of vehicles registered in the state. This shows that the tax alone may not be the determining factor. As per the data <a href="https://vahan.parivahan.gov.in/vahan4dashboard/">shared</a> by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Karnataka earned ₹49,782 crore and Tamil Nadu earned ₹44,031 crore in the same period. Kerala, despite not being mentioned as one of the top five states in terms of vehicle registration, was the fifth biggest collector with ₹30,950 crore revenue between the same time frame.
