<ul><li><keyword id="6357120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm" source="Orion">Paytm</keyword>’s IPO surpasses Coal India’s IPO that was executed in October 2010.</li><li>Paytm’s GMP was at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/paytm-shares-listing-below-ipo-price-but-experts-say-not-to-invest/articleshow/87762352.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink"> ₹20  lower than the issue price of  ₹2,150</a>, on November 17.</li><li>The company listed at a market cap of $17 billion, even though it sought a valuation of $19.9 billion. </li><li>The Vijay Shekhar Shama-led company has raised ₹18,300 crore through this public issue.</li></ul><keyword id="181441" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="One97-communications" source="Orion">One97 Communications</keyword>, the parent of the digital payments giant Paytm, made its debut on the stock exchange on Thursday at ₹1,955 on the Bombay Stock Exchange. This is 9% lower than the issue price of ₹2,150. And, analysts at Macquarie have warned that the stock may go down a lot more before it becomes attractive. <br /><br />Analysts at Macquarie, a global investment bank, have set the target price for Paytm at ₹1,200, that’s 44% below the price at which IPO investors got their shares. Macquarie cited the high price of the IPO and the intense competition from the likes of Amazon, Google and Flipkart for its pessimism around Paytm.<br /><br />“People ask me how do you raise money at such a high price? I say, I don’t raise money on a price but I raise money on a purpose,” said One97 Communications founder and chief executive (CEO) Vijay Shekhar Sharma in his address before the listing ceremony at the BombayStock Exchange.<br /><br />Paytm's shares were trading at ₹1,673 at 12:22 p.m., a discount of nearly 22%. The closing price for November 18 was ₹1564, which is 27% below the issue price.<br /><br /><strong>Paytm is still bigger than Britannia, Bajaj Auto and Zomato<br /></strong><br />The Noida-based Paytm listed at a market cap of ₹1,26,737 crore ($17 billion), which is nearly $3 billion lower than the $19.3 billion-$19.9 billion valuation of the public issue. <br /><br />The fear around the price had set in long before the listing. Paytm’s grey market premium (GMP) — a price at which the share prices are being traded at in the grey market — tumbled down from ₹130 on the first day of bidding on November 8 to a negative ₹30 on Wednesday (November 17). <br /><br />This means that the traders in the grey market are willing to buy the shares at ₹2,130, about ₹20 lower than the issue price.<br /><br />The initial public offering (IPO) by Paytm — owned by Vijay Shekhar Sharma-led One97Communication — is the biggest public issue India has ever witnessed and it surpassed Coal India’s public issue worth ₹15,000 crore executed a decade ago.<br /><br /><div type="twitter" handle="vijayshekhar" handlename="Vijay Shekhar Sharma" image="http://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/813598012173754368/MnHjJnCv_normal.jpg" favoritecount="2066" retweetcount="103" status="Man, I can feel for our cricket team! The remaining ₹10,000 crore was raised as offer for sale (OfS), giving partial exits to Alibaba’s Ant Group, Softbank and others.<br /><strong><br />Experts ask investors to wait it out before investing in Paytm's shares</strong><br /><br />Fresh investors should not invest in Paytm at the moment but wait for another 15 days for the stock to consolidate, Kranthi Bathini, Director - Equity strategy at WealthMills securities, told Business Insider.<br /><br />“Serious investors need to wait for a couple of earning quarters and not jump into stocks like what happened in Nykaa,” he added.<br /><br />Nykaa — which had a stellar debut on the stock market last week — crossed the ₹1 lakh crore market cap on the first day of listing. However, the company’s revenue declined to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/nykaa-will-spend-its-ipo-money-on-setting-up-retail-stores-and-repaying-loans/articleshow/84996894.cms">₹1.2 crore in the July to September quarter,</a> which is significantly lower than ₹27 crore it reported in the same quarter last year.<br /><br />Paytm received bids for 9.11 crore shares versus the 4.83 crore shares up for sale, which means that the issue was oversubscribed by 1.8X. About a third of Paytm’s IPO shares were undersubscribed<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/paytm-ipo-subscription-day-2/articleshow/87608830.cms"> until the second half of the third day of bidding</a>, on November 10. According to a Bloomberg report <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/paytm-may-drop-its-pre-ipo-sale-as-advisors-recommend-lower-valuation/articleshow/87187525.cms">published in October</a>, Paytm was advised to go for a lower valuation than $20 billion in its pre-IPO round but the company decided to skip the round altogether. Even stock brokerage firm Macquarie had given Paytm a with an underperform rating, and projected that the stock may fall to as much as ₹1,200 (compared to an issue price of ₹2,150) any time in the next one year .<br /><br />Interestingly, Paytm was the highest valued Indian startup between 2019 to me this year. The company got a valuation of $19.9 billion in its public issue. It has been just over a year since India's mobile payments and Quick Response (QR) pioneer <keyword id="6357120" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="paytm" source="Orion">Paytm</keyword> made its debut on the stock market and the company has made quite an impression. The initial public offering (IPO), which was the largest in the country's history, drew attention from investors far and wide. Paytm's impressive growth has sparked the interest of savvy investors, both retail and institutional, who are clamouring to add more Paytm stock to their portfolios.<br /><br />As the fintech firm continues to make significant strides towards achieving operating profitability, investors' belief in the Paytm story and the company's long-term potential for success has grown stronger than ever.<br /><br />The company's latest shareholding pattern for the quarter that ended December shows that mutual funds increased their stake by 0.47 per cent to 1.73 per cent. Two new mutual funds entered the stock, taking the total mutual fund shareholders in Paytm from 19 to 21 in the December quarter. Meanwhile, more retail investors have also jumped on board, with their shareholding increasing by 3 per cent to 9.7 per cent. Goldman Sachs has reiterated its 'Buy' rating for Paytm and has upwardly revised its share price target to Rs 1,120. The firm has stated that the current share price continues to offer a compelling entry point into India's largest and one of the fastest-growing fintech platforms.<br /><br />The increase in shareholding by domestic investors is also a positive sign for the Indian economy, as it shows that more and more Indians are investing in the country's rapidly growing fintech sector. An increase in retail shareholding can bring a number of benefits for a company. One of the most significant benefits is increased liquidity, which can help to stabilise the stock price and improve overall market sentiment. Mutual funds increase their stake in Paytm

<ul><li><keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword>’s subsidiary <keyword id="6135170" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paytm-Money">Paytm Money</keyword> has received the approval from market regulator <keyword id="35210" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sebi">SEBI</keyword> to start <keyword id="400838" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-broking">stock broking</keyword>. </li><li>The company has also partnered with BSE and NSE. </li><li>Paytm’s parent company is reportedly in talks to raise funding which will take its valuation to $18 billion. </li></ul>Indian fintech unicorn Paytm’s subsidiary – Paytm Money has received approval from Securities &amp; Exchange Board of India (SEBI) the market regulator to start stock broking. With this, one can soon start buying shares through Paytm Money. <br /><br />Additionally, Paytm Money has also signed a partnership with the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange. In an official blog, the company wrote, “We will be introducing new capabilities &amp; offerings on our platform, such as trading in equities &amp; cash segments, derivatives, ETFs and exchange traded products.” <br /><br />Paytm Money currently offers its users mutual fund investments and had <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/corporate/mutual-funds-paytm-money-vijay-shekhar-sharma-share-trading/story/282818.html">reportedly</a> applied for license for stock broking in October 2018. The company, which has 300 million registered users, will then be able to offer shares and trading to a large number of people, through their phone. <br /><br />While the feature is not live yet, the company is building a reliable platform and is also working on “integrations with both exchanges and depository”.<br /><br />Paytm’s parent company One97 communications has been growing its business through multiple verticals. Alibaba-backed Paytm gets greenlight from India's market regulator to launch stock broking services

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (<keyword id="35210" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="sebi">Sebi</keyword>) should encourage startups as they have raised over Rs 50,900 crore in venture funding since 2012, while mature companies have raised only Rs 13,462 crore through initial public offerings (IPOs) in the same period, reported the Economic Times. <br /><br /> Indian stock markets are not the first destination for most of these startups when they want to list. Most of them prefer to list abroad — London's Alternative Investment Market (AIM), New York's <keyword id="6357328" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="NASDAQ">Nasdaq</keyword>, and Singapore's SSX, which attract new age internet companies like magnets. <br /><br />

	Recently, Sebi chairman UK Sinha spent several weeks meeting entrepreneurs before the regulator came up with a new set of relaxed norms for startups to list on a proposed Institutional Trading Platform (ITP). This, Sebi hopes, will help India compete better with global markets.
<br /><br /> But startup founders and investors have different opinion about it. "ITP is a good step," Vijay Shekhar Sharma, founder, <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword>, told ET. <br /><br />

	Paytm is a mobile wallet-cum-commerce startup.

	"But the Indian environment (read investors) chases only profitable growth. Internet companies are in the early growth phase. Their businesses are disruptive — like changing user buying and selling behaviour. They need to be looked at with different mindsets," he said.
<br /><br /> According to Indian Software Product Industry Roundtable (iSPIRIT), India has 3,100 startups. iSPIRIT is a group of software product companies, which interacted with the <keyword id="6378893" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="market-regulator">market regulator</keyword> to push for the new platform. This is set to multiply to more than 11,000 in just the next five years. <br /><br /> <keyword id="6361649" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Goldman-Sachs">Goldman Sachs</keyword> sees eCommerce accounting for 2.5% of the country's Gross Domestic Product by 2030, growing 15 times to touch $300 billion, from $20 billion at present. Yet the current listing norms are unattractive for startups to list in India. <br /><br /> Global investors as diverse as New York based investment firm Tiger Global, China's Ant Financials, an arm of <keyword id="163405" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Alibaba-Group">Alibaba Group</keyword> and Japan's <keyword id="280185" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Softbank-Corp">Softbank Corp</keyword> have been bank rolling startups here. This is great for the entrepreneurial ecosystem. But the cycle is complete only when startups list locally offering wealth creation opportunities to Indian investors. <br />
