But what is unbelievable is the vast margin they managed to achieve, setting them apart in a crowded e-commerce market. Amazon received 344 million hits while Flipkart and Myntra combined got 314 million visits in September. The third highest number of shoppers came to Snapdeal which got 87 million visits in the same month, according to a SimilarWeb report. Amazon and Flipkart individually had over twice the number of visits than that of Snapdeal, Club Factory, Shopclues, Tata Cliq and Paytm Mall combined, showed the data from the report.

 On an interesting note, Snapdeal scripted a comeback story as its numbers grew to current 87 million from 27 million visits in October 2017. “The growing volumes on Snapdeal are built on a sound and granular understanding of the importance of value in Bharat-focused e-commerce. Our ability to build scale along with favorable unit economics gives Snapdeal an immense competitive advantage,” said Kunal Bahl, CEO &amp; Co-founder, Snapdeal in a statement. Meanwhile, Amazon and Flipkart rode on the festive sale discounts that started in September. Flipkart’s Big Billion Day sale too started towards the end of September.

Flipkart attacking Snapdeal, Amazon shows the e-commerce festive war has

<ul><li>A recent directive from the Indian government on the extended lockdown allowed the ecommerce platforms to deliver non-essential items as well, starting April 21.</li><li> However, now the government has issued a new order that excludes ecommerce platforms from selling non-essential items from its revised guidelines that allow relaxation.</li><li> As a result, you will not be able to order electronics, mobile phones and other such items till May 3, when the current lockdown is scheduled to be lifted.</li></ul>If you have been waiting to order a new phone or any other electronic like a TV or a laptop, you will have to wait a little longer. While delivery of non-essential items was expected to resume after April 20, the government has issued a new notification that prohibits the sale of non-essential items on <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>, <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> and other e-commerce platforms till the lockdown is lifted. On April 16, the Ministry of Home Affairs<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/good-news-now-you-order-non-essentials-on-amazon-paytm-mall-snapdeal-and-others/articleshow/75180220.cms"> issued revised guidelines</a> allowing e-commerce platforms to deliver non-essential items from April 21. The revised guidelines asked platforms to ensure strict social distancing. Remarking on this, the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) said yesterday, “More than 40 lakh traders are supplying essential goods across India ever since the lockdown came into effect. Sidelining and ignoring them, the e-commerce companies have been allowed to deliver non-essential goods from April 20 onwards. It is a one-sided and unjust decision and against the larger interest of the traders and will create an imbalance in the country.” “Today, we have written a letter to PM Modi, asking him to intervene in the matter and reconsider the decision," CAIT’s secretary-general Praveen Khandelwal said. Indian e-commerce players Paytm Mall and Snapdeal welcome the move, saying they were already in talks with brands and their e-commerce partners. Amazon, Flipkart cannot deliver non-essential items like mobile phones, TVs during lockdown

Interestingly, Flipkart and Amazon sell same amount of items on their platform, still the former continues to grab most of the market share in India. Besides, there is also an ongoing fight for the third spot between <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword> Mall and <keyword id="6357066" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ShopClues">ShopClues</keyword>, while <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> has come down to fifth place in terms of volumes. In March, Flipkart registered an average of five lakh shipments daily, whereas <keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> reported nearly 4.5 lakh shipments every day. ET quoted sources saying Snapdeal saw its volumes dip significantly to 30,000 a day from a high of 1.5 lakh daily shipments in March 2016. Flipkart's strong gains come from major categories such as fashion and smartphone segment. It saw 57% rise in smartphone category in first quarter of 2017. While Amazon India had a 27% share, according to data from Counterpoint Research. In the whole of 2016, Amazon increased its share to 31% in this category while Flipkart slipped to 44%, the research firm said. "While higher GMV means more sales, higher orders mean more customers or more orders from the same customers, both are desirable for the sizeable growth of the industry," Krishna Choudhury, senior business analyst at RedSeer Consulting, told ET. "Flipkart continues to remain ahead of Amazon India in terms of gross sales," sources in the know how told ET. "We continue to see tremendous momentum despite our scale, growing at about 85% in Q1 this year. We cannot offer comment on any other financial details," a representative for Amazon India told the news daily. Meanwhile, the battle may heat up if talks of Snapdeal buyout to Flipkart become true. "Marketplaces will look to increase the commissions earned from merchants as well as from chargeable services to consumers, reducing operational costs (including manpower), and rationalising marketing expenditure whose efficacy isn't really being monitored," Devangshu Dutta, chief executive at consulting firm Third Eyesight who expects 2017 to be a year of consolidation, told ET.

The sales that started on October 1 with Amazon are on throughout the week and gaining traction like never before. 
 Adding to the exclusive privileges and financial benefits being offered by portals like ShopClues, Flipkart, Amazon, and Snapdeal the online marketplaces have also backed the entire sale by offering additional discounts through a partnership with banks like <keyword id="42456" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="ICICI">ICICI</keyword> Bank, Standard Chartered, American Express, <keyword id="45123" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="HDFC">HDFC</keyword> etc.

So who’s winning in the numbers game? Well, there’s no clear winner yet, but each e-commerce player has made some commendable moves. Let’s find out.

The 2016 festive sales- The winner so far

<ul><li>Flipkart Internet, which handles the e-commerce arm of the company, saw a 40% rise in losses adding up to ₹1,624 crore.</li><li>Amazon India’s e-commerce vertical – Amazon Seller Services saw a 9.5% decrease in losses to ₹5,685 crore.</li><li>Amazon Pay saw its losses grow by 24.7%.</li></ul>The e-commerce giants in India – Flipkart and Amazon, have both posted massive losses for the financial year ending March 2019. The report card Flipkart Internet, which handles the e-commerce arm of the company, <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/company-results/flipkart-s-net-loss-rises-86-to-rs-3-837-cr-in-2018-19-11572290528106.html">saw </a>its losses widen by 40% to ₹1,624 crore. However, its operating revenues grew by 51% to ₹4,234 crore. That’s not all, Flipkart’s net loss also expanded by a whopping 86% to ₹3,837 crore. Meanwhile, Amazon India’s e-commerce vertical – Amazon Seller Services saw a dip in its losses which came in lower by 9.5% dip at ₹5,685 crore. Amazon’s revenues also grew by 55% to ₹7,778 crore. Its total losses in India crossed the ₹7,000 crore mark. Another blow to Amazon came with its payment arm – <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/company-results/amazon-india-s-e-commerce-arm-narrows-fy19-loss-to-rs-5-685-cr-11572291190455.html">Amazon Pay</a> which too posted record losses. It posted a to ₹1,160.8 crore loss which was 24.7% more than its previous fiscal’s loss. Continued investment, despite losses Amazon and Flipkart put together hold about 80% of India’s e-commerce share. So, even with the losses mounting, the two companies continue to fight it out in the market with sales and discounts. In the run up to the festive season, Amazon hit 344 million visits, Flipkart and Myntra combined had 314 million visits in September. Flipkart and Amazon are selling more but losing even more

Shopclues which was once valued at $1.1 billion-- is sold in an all stock deal for a reported valuation ranging between $70-$100 million. Here’s a look at how it all went down for the e-commerce startup. 2011 Shopclues was founded in July 2011 by Sanjay Sethi, Sandeep Aggarwal and Radhika Aggarwal. This was two years before Amazon came to India. It raised an angel round of funding. 2012 The startup raised its series A round of funding of $4 million. During this time, Shopclues had 2500 transactions a day and according to <a href="https://www.techcircle.in/2012/09/04/excl-shopclues-raises-4m-in-series-a-round-looking-to-gross-rs-100cr-sales-by-dec-2012">reports</a>, was hoping to turn profitable by 2013. 2013 Gaining momentum, Shopclues closes its series B round for $10 million from investors Nexus Venture Partners and Helion Venture Partners. 2014 Shopclues raised $15 million as a part of its series C round of funding from its existing investors. 2015 In 2015, the startup scooped up its Series D funding for $100 million, also welcoming Tiger Global to its board of investors. “Shopclues has emerged as the leading marketplace of choice for the millions of small and local businesses seeking to reach mass consumers in India’s tier 2 and tier 3 cities,” the then Tiger Global private equity business head Lee Fixel <a href="https://www.vccircle.com/e-com-marketplace-shopclues-raises-100m-series-c-funding-led-tiger-global/">had said.</a> It also registered a GMV of $400 million. 2016 Between late 2015 and early 2016, Shopclues closed its series E round of funding to join the prestigious unicorn club. It also brought back its dreams for profitability while also reportedly hoping for an IPO. 2017 Shopclues was caught in the middle of a very public spat between its founders – husband and wife duo Sandeep Aggarwal and Radhika. Aggarwal put out a post on Facebook accusing his wife of “an illicit affair” as well as ousting him from the company. It was also the year when the company’s <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/money/shopclues-fy-17-revenue-up-5-losses-decline-by-13/articleshow/61539773.cms">revenue began slowing dow</a>n. In FY17, the company’s revenue grew by 5% instead of the usual 50% jump it had been seeing. Its losses stood at ₹332 crores. 2018 It managed to come back in the game with a 46% revenue jump and cutting down its losses to ₹208 crore in FY18. But at this time, Shopclues also <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/shopclues-revenue-up-46-to-rs-273-crore/articleshow/66409043.cms">cut down</a> on operational costs, advertising spends and employee benefits. However, it was facing immense competition from Flipkart, Amazon, Paytm etc who were growing at breakneck speed. Meanwhile, Shopclues was focussing on its wholesale marketplace model. Once again, its plans to go in for an IPO in 2018, failed to see the light of the day. Multiple senior management <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/info-tech/top-level-exits-at-shopcluescom/article23263804.ece">exits</a> too began in the company. It also fired 50 employees across verticals. It also lost a legal fight with L’oreal, which had <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/loral-india-wins-judgement-on-counterfeits-against-shopclues/articleshow/66652453.cms">accused</a> Shopclues of selling counterfeit products on its platform. 2019 Having survived on bridge rounds of investments, troubles started mounting for the company as its struggle to survive became public. The rumours of its probable sell began taking solid turns. Snapdeal (who was itself making a comeback from massive losses) was reported to be in talks with Shopclues for a possible merger, but the talks didn’t go through in the end. There were also rumours about ebay.in looking to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/ebay-in-talks-with-etailers-including-shopclues-for-a-fresh-bid-in-india/articleshow/65157378.cms">acquire</a> Shopclues. Shopclues also laid off about 200 employees to cut costs. Then came the news of its final sale to Singapore-based Qoo10 in an all stock deal, but with a massive fall in valuation. “This partnership presents new strategic opportunities for both companies, as it opens up cross-border opportunities for consumers and sellers across Asia,” the company said in a statement.

Chinese internet behemoth <keyword id="302749" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Alibaba">Alibaba</keyword>, which means to enter the domestic e-commerce market by early next year, has held discussions to acquire online marketplace <keyword id="6357066" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ShopClues">ShopClues</keyword>, which is valued at over $1 billion. Alibaba needs to merge the Paytm, in which it has a stake, with the much bigger adversary ShopClues, as it is prospecting several securing targets to solidify an India entry against opponent Amazon, people acquainted with the matter said. 
 The Gurgaon-based ShopClues numbers <keyword id="6357968" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="GIC">GIC</keyword> of Singapore, <keyword id="526777" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tiger-Global">Tiger Global</keyword>, Nexus Venture Partners and Helion among its investors and has raised about $250 million till date. ShopClues is positioned as an online flea market, selling cheaper and generally unbranded merchandise to value shoppers. The organization, which is one among the top takeover targets in Indian e-commerce, is said to be reporting a revenue run-rate of $750 million based on the gross merchandise value of the products sold. 
 Investment bankers have taken multiple deal propositions to Alibaba in recent months. The Jack Ma-led Chinese goliath is hoping to sew up combination moves to challenge Amazon, which has already emerged as the nation's second-largest online marketplace and is seen threatening <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>'s leadership. This includes getting a significant stake in Flipkart and merging smaller Indian opponents with it, or scaling up investments in <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> in which it is currently a little shareholder. 
 
The media has speculated about Alibaba's interest in Flipkart, however these parleys have stalled over differences in valuations. Incidentally, Flipkart has likewise been rumored as a potential suitor for ShopClues since Tiger Global is a large regular investor in both.

Gowrappan, who joined Alibaba in November a year ago, is spending more time in India to finalize Alibaba's entry strategy. Sources said he was in regards to join the leading body of One 97 Communications, the parent of Paytm, and is working from the latter's offices in Noida. 
 
Sources cautioned that the discussions with ShopClues may not lead to an exchange. Alibaba could value ShopClues at around $1 billion however the organization's management is negotiating for a higher valuation. One of the fears on Wall Street is that both companies Amazon and Walmart, which bought the Indian e-tail major Flipkart in 2018, will lose business in one of the world's largest consumer markets, India. The Narendra Modi government changed the rules in <a href="https://in.reuters.com/article/india-ecommerce/india-tightens-e-commerce-rules-likely-to-hit-amazon-flipkart-idINKCN1OQ09D" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">December 2018 </a>for foreign players in India's online marketplace, curbing them from offering consumers ‘deep discounts’ or sell their own brands through their respective platforms. In the three months ending December 2018, the growth in Amazon's revenue from markets outside the US nearly halved to 15% compared to the same time last year. The new rules in India could further eat into Amazon's profit. India changed its policy after complaints from India's small traders who fear that the American giants could squeeze out the small corner shops and dominate Indian retail. India's home-grown retailers accused Amazon and Walmart of unfair bias towards affiliate vendors and predatory pricing. However, as Business Insider <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/amazon-walmart-owned-flipkart-set-back-by-new-e-commerce-rules-that-help-mukesh-ambanis-reliance-retail/articleshow/67751026.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">explained</a> recently, the biggest beneficiary of the new policy may not be a broke Snapdeal or the now-jaded Shopclues. It is likely to be India’s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/e-commerce-wars-amazons-jeff-bezos-vs-mukesh-ambani-in-india/articleshow/67620116.cms">largest retail chain operator</a> Reliance Retail, owned by Mukesh Ambani — the richest man, not only in India, but in Asia. It is to be seen how Donald Tump's White House reacts to the change in policy in India that hurts two America's marquee companies. In a world where are shopping less almost everyday, a market like India with a population of over a billion is an attractive spot. But in a move that may keep hope alive, the Indian government is trying to ease the function of e-commerce in the country. It has formed formed a standing Group of Secretaries under Ramesh Abhishek, the secretary for Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). This committee will ensure inter-ministerial/inter-departmental coordination on resolving issues, cutting across Ministries and departments, regarding e-commerce in India, according to an official release. After the draft e-commerce policy had been announced, Indian industry had voiced their concerns regarding the same. While foreign players not being allowed to take on multi-brand retail, domestic players do not have to comply to such regulations. Indian players like <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> had also mentioned that the policy ignores inventory-based e-commerce players. Founders of Snapdeal, Shopclues were even reported to have come together to set up a lobby for Indian e-commerce which would give the government its inputs on the policy. However, it is not clear whether this panel of bureaucrats will address the exact issues raised by the industry. Meanwhile, Indian e-commerce players have until June 27 to submit their concerns on the draft e-commerce policy. The Indian e-commerce market targeting consumers is estimated to reach $200 billion by 2026, whereas the enterprise e-commerce is expected to hit a whopping $300 billion. As of now, the country’s e-commerce industry is a mere 3% of the global market in size.
