Legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray's feature <keyword id="106892" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pather-panchali" source="Orion">Pather Panchali</keyword> has been declared the best Indian film of all time by the <keyword id="2866617" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="international-federation-of-film-critics" source="Orion">International Federation of Film Critics</keyword> (FIPRESCI). The 1955 film has received the number one slot in the top ten films in the history of Indian cinema list, which was declared after a poll conducted by the India chapter of FIPRESCI. As per a press release issued by FIPRESCI-India, the poll was conducted in secret and involved 30 members. Based on Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay's 1929 Bengali novel of the same name, "Pather Panchali" was Ray's directorial debut. It starred Subir Banerjee, Kanu Banerjee, Karuna Banerjee, Uma Dasgupta, Pinaki Sengupta and Chunibala Devi. Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali declared best Indian film of all time by International Federation of Film Critics

He's 80 and going stronger than ever, spooling in celluloid miles' with the roles rolling in and directors still lining up to sign him on. <keyword id="6357912" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amitabh-Bachchan" source="Orion">Amitabh Bachchan</keyword>, they say, was and is still an exciting actor, perhaps the best there ever has been. From Ramesh Sippy who directed him in the 1975 cult film <keyword id="6407374" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sholay" source="Orion">Sholay</keyword> to Ayan Mukerji who helmed his latest Brahmastra 47 years later, <keyword id="6354348" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bachchan" source="Orion">Bachchan</keyword> is the man for all seasons and all kinds of films. "What a wonderful innings it has been and he just keeps getting better. He has played so many varied roles in comedy, drama, romance, dancing and songs. He can do anything and everything perfectly. Has there been anybody bigger or better? I doubt it, Sippy told PTI as the star celebrates his 80th birthday on Tuesday. It's been just five days since his latest release Goodbye . "For me, to have Mr. Bachchan walk in my film is a big deal. He is the father of Indian cinema. He is the most respected person in the film industry, Mukerji added. Making his debut with the relatively low profile Saat Hindustani in 1969, remembered all these years primarily for serving as his launchpad, Bachchan exploded on the silver screen with <keyword id="31017" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="zanjeer" source="Orion">Zanjeer</keyword> in 1973. There was no looking back after that, and storytellers across five decades are still trying to decode the success of the man who keeps on reinventing himself - the angry young man' of Zanjeer , Don and Deewaar , the amiable, fun professor of Chupke Chupke and the conflicted singing star of Abhimaan in the 1970s. Then came the 1980s with films such as Shakti and Silsila . The 1990s saw a slump in Bachchan's career and many of films, including "Mrityudata" and "Lal Baadshah", tanked at the box office. Bachchan was back in the reckoning the following decade as a television host in Kaun Banega Crorepati in 2000. Twenty-two years later, the show is still running. This is also the time Bachchan transitioned into age appropriate characters in films. It started with Mohabbatein and continues with varied roles, be it Pink , Cheeni Kum or Jhund . Sippy recalled the casting for Sholay , which saw Bachchan and Dharmendra as two friends thick as thieves . "I had seen two of his earlier films -- Anand' in which he played a serious role, it was a difficult role and he stood out, and Bombay to Goa', where he played a lighter and a more boisterous role, which had impressed me a lot. We signed him. A few months later "Zanjeer" and "Deewar" released. By the time "Sholay" came, he was the rising star, the veteran filmmaker added. Sippy, who also worked with Bachchan in "Shakti", "Shaan" and "Akayla", said it is exciting to see the megastar recreate magic on screen, both the big and small even after all these years. There have been a lot of fine actors and there is absolute respect for all but he definitely stands above, he said.They may be in awe of him, but all of Bachchan's directors have experimented with the roles they offered him. R Balki, who first worked with Bachchan on an advertisement campaign, gave him "Cheeni Kum", where Bachchan is a 60-something arrogant chef romancing a much younger Tabu, and Paa that sees the star playing a 12-year-old boy afflicted with progeria. "Every filmmaker thinks of Mr Bachchan first, everybody would love to get a chance to work with him. We all came to the cinema being his fans. I was luckier than some people. I write my films for him. I have been searching for my next film for some years now," Balki told PTI. The filmmaker's other ventures -- Ki &amp; Ka , Pad Man and Chup: Revenge of the Artist -- feature the veteran star in a special appearance. There is one word to describe Amit ji and it is Amitabh Bachchan. There are no other words... It has become like a character itself. It has so much meaning, you can say persona, dignity, grace, powerful, voice, performance, everything being put together. There is a character called Amitabh Bachchan. That character is a rare phenomenon, Balki said. For new-age directors -- Ayan Mukerji and Ribhu Dasgupta -- the opportunity to direct Bachchan is nothing short of a dream. While Mukerji cast Bachchan as a guru in his astraverse, sci-fi film, Dasgupta directed Bachchan in the TV series "Yudh" (2014) and 2016 mystery-thriller Te3n . Dasgupta has tried hard to keep his fan boy self out of the picture. I come from Kolkata and we worship him there. There is an Amitabh Bachchan temple in Kolkata. But when I directed him, I had to keep the fan boy out. Also, sir knows everything, where the camera should be, what and where the light should be, etc. He sees what the person in front is doing," Dasgupta said. This year, Bachchan has already had three theatrical releases -- Nagraj Manjule-directed Jhund , Ajay Devgn's Runway 34 and Brahmastra . That’s what happened in this Homi Adajania movie as the ‘party girl’ Veronica (Deepika Padukone) undergoes a sea change after meeting the meek and docile Meera (Diana Penty). While Veronica gave shelter to homeless Meera, the latter filled her life with love that was missing from her life. A nice chick flick for the day as you sing Chadi mujhe yaari teri aise... jaise daaru desi!

5 Bollywood Movies To Watch This Friendship Day

New Delhi, The quiz-based reality show '<keyword id="17940" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kaun-Banega-Crorepati" source="Orion">Kaun Banega Crorepati</keyword>' season 15, has got its second Crorepati in UP's <keyword id="18850842" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jasnil-Kumar" source="Orion">Jasnil Kumar</keyword>. The first Crorepati was Punjab's Jaskaran Singh. The 36-year-old Jasnil hails from Anwak in Uttar Pradesh, which is a small village in Azamgarh district. He works in a retail garment store. His family consists of mother, father, grandfather, his wife and two kids. He also has four younger brothers and two sisters. In episode 29 of the show, host and megastar <keyword id="6357912" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amitabh-Bachchan" source="Orion">Amitabh Bachchan</keyword> asked Jasnil: "Your current wish is to build a good house. Do you have any other wish?" To this, he replied: "Sir, like I told you, it's not like I don't think about myself. I had dreams as well as desires. When I was studying, I wished I had good clothes. l also wanted to travel." Big B said: "Both the wishes have been fulfilled. You travelled to Mumbai. You also got good clothes (indicating towards his jacket, which the actor gifted Jasnil)." Jasnil said: "We had financial problems at home from the beginning. My father's income was very meagre. I could manage somewhat after I got a job. With the money I earned, I tried to help my family, be it for farming or the education of my younger siblings." The actor wished him luck, saying: "Jasnil, may your desires be fulfilled. You have worked hard not just in your life but also in this game. Your innocence reflects in the way you talk, and depicts your roots. People of your region, your work and life experience have been innocent. And innocence matters in life. I believe so." Jasnil said: "As the elder son, I have to shoulder many responsibilities. Even if I try with this income, then it might take me a lifetime. KBC is a platform that can help me change my family's fortune overnight. Whatever prize money I win, I will use it to turn my house into a permanent structure." Then, the host asked him the question for Rs one Crore. The question read: "The gold left after a yagya performed by whom was used by the Pandavas to refill their treasury and conduct the Ashwamedha yagya?" The options given were - A: Vikarna B: Marutta C: Kubera D: Likhita. Jasnil gave the correct answer, which was Marutta, and won the huge price of Rs one crore. He then cried loudly in excitement, and hugged the 'Sholay' fame actor tightly. Jasnil even lied down on the floor, and touched Amitabh's feet in respect. Amitabh then asked him the last question for Rs seven crore: "Leena Gade, a person of Indian origin, is the first female race engineer to win which of the following races?" The options given were: A: Indianapolis 500 B: 24 Hours of Le Mans C: 12 Hours of Sebring D: Monaco Grand Prix. Jasnil guessed the right answer, which was option B - 24 Hours of Le Mans. However, he was not sure of the answer, and didn't have any lifelines left with him, so he decided to quit the show, and took home Rs one crore. Earlier, the show had its first Crorepati in Jaskaran Singh, who hails from a small village Khalra in Punjab, situated close to the border. However, after winning one crore Rupees, Jaskaran was not able to answer the Rs seven crore question and he decided to quit the game. Big B had lauded his decision to quit the game at the high risk point. The question of Rs seven crore asked to Jaskaran was: According to the Padma Purana, which king had to live as a tiger for a hundred years due to a deer's curse? The options given were Kshemadhurti, Dharmadatta, Mitadhvaja and Prabhanjana. The correct answer was Prabhanjana. 'Kaun Banega Crorepati 15' airs on Sony.

Jasnil Kumar who works in a garment store becomes KBC 15's second crorepati

Big B’s best movies are back on the big screens - Here are 11 you can watch

It is 15th of August in 1975; Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay has found its way into the theatres. While the country men have switched on the patriotic mode in them, Bollywood was preparing to redefine the arena of Indian commercial cinema like never before. A film that defines patriotism in a newer way, thrills with its suspense even if you watch it for the zillionth time and shows how a friendship in India thrives has come a long way and it’s now a part of every Indian’s growing-up discourse. 
This Independence Day marks the 40th anniversary of Sholay. Anupama Chopra, the renowned film critic has said in her book ‘Sholay- The Making of a classic’ (Penguin India), “Over the years, Sholay, has transcended its hit-movie status. It is not merely a film, it is the ultimate classic; it is myth.” 
 
While, over the last 40 yrs much has been said and written about the film, we at Business Insider list for you 20 amazing facts you still don’t know about Sholay: 
 
 
1. Sholay is a record breaker in many ways. It is also India’s first 70 mm film, which had stereophonic sound. 
 
2. Amjad Khan’s ‘Kitney aadmi the’ dialogue has become a cult. Yet, Khan was almost rejected because the casting director found that his voice was not ‘powerful enough’. 
 
3. Many things about this movie were real even the bullets in the climax scene. It is said that one spare bullet had nearly missed Amitabh. 
 
4. Gabbar’s gang member Sambha was played by Mac Mohan. Though he has become an indispensible part of the movie, he just has one dialogue in Sholay. 
 
5. Amzad Khan wasn’t the first choice for the role of Gabbar. It was Danny Denzongpa who was supposed to play the role. 
 
6. What DDLJ is to Maratha Mandir, Minerva Theatre of Mumbai is for Sholay. This theatre screened Sholay for 5 years continuously in all three shows of the day. And till 1980, it was a major hit. 
 
7. Sholay has proved this long back that awards don’t determine a movie’s credibility. Though a blockbuster, Sholay had won just one Filmfare award, that too for editing. 
 
8. The movie, after the initial part, is all about Gabbar and his notorious activities. However, in a 204 minute film, Gabbar appears in just 9 scenes. 
 
9. While the official release date was 15th August 1975, the movie was launched on 2nd October in 1973. 
 
10. Estimated at Rs 2 crores, Sholay’s budget over ran to an extra one crore. It took almost two and a half years to complete the movie.

12. Getting requisite permissions had prevented Thakur Saab from being an army officer. The character of Thaakur saab was conceived as a retired army officer. Having not got necessary clearances from the army, the role was changed to a police officer. 
 
13. The role of Jai played by Amitabh Bachchan was initially planned for Shatrughan Sinha. 
 
14. Dharmendra was nursing a deep crush on Hema Malini during the shooting of the film. He wanted to play the role of Thakur initially, but settled for playing Veeru when he realized that the character would be paired against Hema Malini. 
 
 
15. The light boys were bribed by Dharmendra to spoil his scenes with Hema Malini. This led to numerous retakes and Dharmendra’s chance of getting closer to Hema intensified. 
 
16. The original ending of Sholay has Gabbar being killed by Thakur. 
 
 
17. The Censor Board didn’t approve of too much violence in the end. Sholay was made to re-shoot several scenes to get rid of extreme violence.

A powerful emotion, it is a perennial marketing tool. </li><li>Harjiv Singh, Founder and CEO, Gutenberg traces how different kinds of brands have used ‘nostalgia’ over the years and writes how it would be interesting to see what becomes of this trend in the decade ahead as technology matures and a generation of digital natives approaches its prime spending years.</li></ul>‘Kitne aadmi the?’ Few who grew up to Hindi cinema in the 1970s could ever forget Gabbar Singh’s iconic dialogue in Sholay. In 2016, the creators of a popular advertisement for Google India counted on just that. The six-minute ad, released on YouTube and titled <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYqEpuifLI8">‘The Hero – A Bollywood Story’</a>, centres around an ageing cinema hall manager who almost bagged a role in the hit film as a young man before being forced to give up on his promising dream of becoming a Bollywood ‘Hero’. Four decades later, his son takes him to the place where the memorable line was shot and the two engage in a poignant re-enactment of the scene. What follows is a nostalgic homage to other films of the last five decades, including more recent ones like Dil Chahta Hai and Rang De Basanti. The ad’s popularity was inevitable. Since its release, it has garnered almost seven million views on YouTube. But Google has not been alone in riding the nostalgia wave over the past decade. What makes nostalgia tick? In his 2010 book Thinking, Fast and Slow, Nobel-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman observes how as human beings, we consciously define ourselves through stories, shaping them around significant events in our lives. This explains why familiar senses can inspire a longing for a past that almost always appears simpler and fonder with time. Nostalgia was long thought to be a mental defect. But <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/09/science/what-is-nostalgia-good-for-quite-a-bit-research-shows.html?auth=login-google&amp;login=google">a growing body of research</a> has shown that it can actually counter negative emotions like boredom, loneliness, and anxiety while enriching our lives with meaning. This is precisely what makes nostalgia such an effective marketing tool. A 2014 study published by the <a href="https://academic.oup.com/jcr/article-abstract/41/3/713/2907535?redirectedFrom=fulltext">Journal of Consumer Research</a> showed that it even encouraged consumers to spend more. A keen understanding of the target audience and the cultural milieu of the past is fundamental to nostalgia marketing. Nostalgia, by definition, is contingent on maturity. Advertisers need a sizeable window of collective experience to tap into for their marketing to be effective. It makes little sense to use nostalgia to sell products or services to a 14-year-old. On the other hand, consumers in their prime spending years of 40 to 60 and older millennials (who acquired purchasing power more recently) provide a range of experiences for marketers. Much of recent nostalgia marketing has evidently attempted to appeal to both older and younger consumers. A part of the strategy behind Google’s 2016 ad was that it contained references to films from two Indias – an older socialist India and a modern post-liberalisation India, thus appealing to cohorts that grew up in both. Onida offers another telling example. In the 1980s, when television was establishing a nascent presence in Indian middle-class homes, the brand launched its iconic <a href="http://theprint.in/features/brandma/devils-in-the-detail-how-onida-tv-became-a-household-name-in-the-80s/203262/">Devil mascot</a>. The Devil remained Onida’s mascot for two decades before the company wrapped it up. When it was resurrected in 2018, it was clearly meant to evoke the memories of those who knew the brand three decades earlier. We have also seen marketing specifically targeted at older millennials, who also came of age at a relatively simpler and more stable time. In 2013, Microsoft released <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkM6RJf15cg">an advertisement</a> targeted at American millennials for Internet Explorer that drew heavily on the shared childhood experiences of the average American who grew up in the 1990s. Manufacturing nostalgia <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/06/the-end-of-forgetting/524523/">In 1888</a>, Kodak released its first commercially successful camera, marking the beginning of mass-scale technologically aided nostalgia. Today, social media and smartphone technology provide the means to create and distribute content, and with it the ability to effectively manufacture nostalgia. It only takes a smartphone equipped with a good camera, the right editing app, and internet access to create and drive powerful content. Social media is replete with listicles curated to trigger nostalgia by evoking past pop culture fads. But consider how any content that sparked such a trend on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram first began as a single post on one profile before going viral. Recent marketing has effectively capitalised on the nostalgia enabled by such platforms. <a href="https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/examples-nostalgia-marketing-ads">In 2016</a>, the much-adored painter Bob Ross, best known for the 1980s US television series The Joy of Painting, experienced a resurgent popularity, two decades following his death, after the classic show was picked up by Netflix. He soon became a trending topic on Instagram and drew the attention of Adobe, which released a series of tutorial videos to promote their Adobe Photoshop Sketch that paid homage to the late artist.  Facebook’s More Together Facebook’s ‘More Together’ showcases how people across the country can do more by coming together, harnessing the power of their connections on the platform. The campaign marks many firsts for the company. India is the first country in the Asia Pacific region where such a campaign is being rolled out. Livpure aims to put an end to this wasteful aspect of one of the most loved festivals of India.  Max Fashion’s #MaxWaliApnoHoli Max Fashion’s campaign spins around how colours of Max bring people together during Holi, irrespective of whether they like playing with colours or not. Capturing the affectionate moments between siblings, the campaign revolves around a family of five rejoicing in the celebrations of Holi. The film focuses on the youngest member of the family who is running away from his sisters with a fear of getting coloured by them. A colourful twist is further added to their playful bond when the sisters gift their brother trendy outfits instead of soaking him in multi-colours. Through this film, Max celebrates the true spirit of Holi by celebrating togetherness and spreading happiness with their stance – #HoliApnoWali. Brands celebrate different hues of India this Holi

“Everyone has an untold story hidden behind the closed doors, try to understand that people are not always as they first seem,” and perhaps this quote has helped <keyword id="2962919" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kunj-Karia">Kunj Karia</keyword>, a professional blogger, awaken the-long-sleeping rockstar in this <keyword id="2962917" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mumbai-Autowallah">Mumbai autowallah</keyword>. 
 It was an extreme co-incidence when Kunj Karia discovered that he was being driven home from his second guitar lesson by this autowallah, who was once a <keyword id="2962918" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="professional-guitarist">professional guitarist</keyword>. The moment that <keyword id="62385" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Auto-driver">auto driver</keyword> saw Kunj holding the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=guitar">guitar</a>, he put across a few questions. And this was enough for Kunj to know that the autowallah has a deep understanding of this musical instrument. Kunj writes in his blog, "Five minutes in the conversation, I understood he knows a lot about guitar." 
 
The auto driver told Kunj, "I used to play with a group of friends, at small <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=restaurant">restaurants</a> and bars. We used to perform on streets also.” Stating the reason for him to stop playing, the auto rider said, “<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/yourmoney">Money</a> wasn’t good for musicians back then. Also, there was no assurance of a gig on a daily basis. I was married and I needed something which assured my family food, at least twice a day.” 
 
When Kunj enquired about his friends with whom he played guitar and sought other details, the autowallah said, “We started playing when we were around your age. They used to go to college, I couldn’t since I was working at a factory during day time. Every evening we used to meet, play our favorite songs and perform at some bars if we could get in. Good times, those.” 
 
Riding down memory lane, the autowallah, who once again wanted to cherish the memories of those golden days, couldn’t resist asking Kunj, "You mind if I play something on your guitar? It's been long since I played one?" Kunj immediately said, “Sure! I’d love to listen to you.” 
 
And then he started playing the background score from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=sholay">Sholay</a>, one of the best <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/thewire">Bollywood</a> films. Suprisingly, the autowallah hadn’t forgotten even a single string, despite the long years away from it! Besides, he also told Kunj that “My son learns and plays on his friends’ instrument.” 
 
This ride ended with words of affirmation from the autowallah, who said, “Don’t give up on the guitar for a year and the guitar won’t give up on you ever.”
